Star Wars Battlefront Playable First on Xbox One, Exec Claims
DICE-developed shooter likely available via EA Access; Reveal trailer set to air on Friday.

- Star Wars Battlefront, EA's first-person shooter due for release in late 2015, will be playable first on Xbox One, according to a Microsoft executive. Aaron Greenberg, who leads Microsoft's games marketing division, told a fan on Twitter that the game would be accessible on Xbox One before it ships on PlayStation 4 and PC.

Quite how the Star Wars title will come first to Xbox One was not explained by Greenberg, though the most likely outcome is that the project will be available a few days early for EA Access members.

- A build of the game is also expected to be showcased at a Star Wars Celebration event this week in California. Those who attend "will have a chance to see gameplay behind closed doors during the show at our official booth along with a few other activities starting that Friday," according to EA.

From what I've read, the first original Battlefront (haven't played it in years and years) didn't have an actual campaign either, but rather focused on the large battles. An actual campaign (and battles in space) didn't actually arrive until Battlefront II.

From the sounds of it, from the developers themselves, they're trying to keep this game in the spirit of the first Battlefront (hence nothing from the prequel trilogy).

If they make a Battlefront II in a couple years, they'll probably bring in the events from the prequel trilogy and include space battles after they know what works and what doesn't work and what they have to change from this first game.

I played both the original Battlefront and Battlefront II games, so I am very much looking forward to this game.

That said, this game has got me missing those first two games so bad, I'm looking to pick them up online again, either the old original Xbox games that I can use on 360, or get PS2 versions and just hook my PS2 back up.

It sounds like Battlefront will not copy some common features from the Battlefield franchise:

Looks like there are going to be a few surprises in Star War Battlefront if you're expecting a re-skinned Battlefield. There are no classes or squads - two things you sort of take as a given in most DICE shooters. Well, any multiplayer shooter full stop.

The info's mentioned in the latest issue of OXM where design director Niklas Fegraeus says players are able to “freely” pick their weapons and gear, rather than select pre-made classes. You can instead unlock and use whatever you want using XP, so it sounds like you won't be tied to set archetypes.

Even more interesting is the move away from squads, Battlefield's familiar five man groupings. Instead of that there's a new 'Partners' feature that links two players together so that they can see each other on their HUDS and spawn on each other to save time getting around. They'll also be able to share whatever they've unlocked, so if you're teamed with a higher level partner, or someone who's bought a different loadout with their XP, then you can have access to a different set of toys.

That video was very cool. A HUGE benefit for me is that is has both first and third person views and allows split screen coop so my kids could play that together. Plus playing on both sides, ships, etc looks great.

Having played both the original Battlefront and Battlefront II games on the original Xbox, fuck me I can't wait for this game. The multiplayer only may turn some people off, and even I enjoy a good single player campaign in a game, but when you get massive battles going on with up to 40 players, plus possibly added bots (not sure if bots will be included in the online PVP battles) like the old games, and it will be nonstop action.

And while there won't be a dedicated campaign, you can still play offline alone using coop with bots.

Either way, this is THE game that I am eagerly anticipating this fall. I have been hunting like hell to try and find my old Xbox copy of Battlefront. I'd buy Battlefront II, but the prices have been nuts lately on eBay.

Enjoyed watching. I was on there for about an hour. Game looks fun and as good as advertised. I'm still cautiously optimistic but I don't see any real reason to not buy it, at this point.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty damn good game. Walker Assault needs a little work. Empire almost always wins guaranteed. The Rebels just don't have good enough weapons to bring down the AT-ATs consistently. It also sometimes feels like the Rebels weapons are a bit underpowered. It doesn't take too much for those playing on the side of the Empire to start pretty much taking control of the entire match.

Regardless, it's a lot of fun! Definitely on my day one purchase list of games.

A great mix of everything. Fighting on the ground as both rebel and empire, flying TIE Fighters, TIE Interceptors, A-Wings and X-Wings, driving AT-STs, and even periodically able to go around massacring as Luke Skywalker or force choking people as Darth Vader.

Yeah, the heroes seem to be random pickups on the map similar to the vehicles and other power ups. Just look for a pickup with a lightsaber sticking up through the middle. I was able to snag Vader a couple times and was Luke at least once. Really fun just destroying people with them! The force choke is especially pleasing to use. :)

It seems like the blocking is auto. There seems to be essentially a timer. When you first enter as the hero, you can see the life bar on the bottom depleting by 1 seemingly every second, maybe two. If you get into a crowded area where you're being shot by multiple people (or having grenades chucked at you), that bar drains that much faster.

Pretty much similar to when running around on the map as a regular rebel or stormtrooper, you don't want to go running into a mass of enemies because it'll just get you killed quicker. Find the quieter route or a flank and try and get them in a groups of 1-3 and decimate them that way.

Yeah I get what you're saying. The H1Z1's and the DAYZ style of gameplay is here to stay. My personal preference is always story first though I understand that I am no longer the target audience for video games (pref. offline single player). As they say, "it is what it is."

I agree Jaymo. I gave it a whirl this weekend a bit and I just couldn't get into it. Solid graphics and online play was fine but with no communication between the teams what is the point. I just felt like I was running around aimlessly trying to get the high score (of course I never came close) and there is no real sense of team like there should be in a Rebels v. Empire gun fight.

I probably won't even rent this one as I'm just not into online only shooters with no story and very little actual teamwork involved in the online play.

I never got to play as Luke or Vadar because I died so much . I didn't like the weapons we or the sights, but star wars isn't about sights or attachments hopefully they don't add those in.

Been playing more on the EA Access, man this game is a fun shooter.

EA has revealed the earliest details for the Star Wars Battlefront season pass. The $50 bundle includes a cross-section of content, including maps, modes, heroes, and gear.

The listing that appears on EA's Star Wars website indicates that players will get access to four more heroes, four additional modes, twenty new pieces of gear (including Star Cards), and sixteen new maps.

That last bullet point caught our eye. The core Star Wars Battlefront game ships with four locations (planets) and 13 maps spread across them. These are largely dependent on mode, and there is only one large map per planet.

This is the full list of Battlefront maps that come with the retail and digital release.

The list seems normal for a multiplayer game, until you look at which maps support which modes. If you prefer to play large scale battles, you actually are only playing on four maps, not the full thirteen.

At first blush you might think that the $50 season pass adding 125 percent more maps is an anomaly. However, that's actually significantly fewer than DICE's last game, Battlefield 4. That $50 season pass tripled the number of maps bringing the total from 10 to 30. That title also featured a full campaign.

I like the hell outta BF4, I've played it a lot here lately, hours and hours at night.

The game doesn't have a squad per say but they instead have a spawn partner for which you can spawn on. You can get placed on a crappy team and not really have a way to improve the situation but that even happens in BF4 & Hardline as well.

Now that I went through a long run I'm looking forward to trying things out in more depth. My kids played this afternoon, I'm not sure what my son thought but he was looking forward to it and he has never watched a star wars movie :D

The biggest complaint I've seen so far is it's mainly an online game only, you buy the game and then EA/Dice will want you to purchase all the DLC. Sounds a lot like BF3,4, & H. I don't mind paying for the premium content on BF4, I really enjoy the hell outta that game. I haven't purchased it for BFH yet. I also didn't pay full price for BF4 so I can kinda see where these people are coming from if they dropped $60 on Battlefront and it's only the bare bones game. I paid $19 for BF4 on XB1 + $49 for premium and $22+$49 on PS4.

Maybe I'll get lucky and one of those upset customers will trade Battlefront in and I can pick it up used with my Gamestop rewards member discount price card.

From what I've seen of the youtube videos, the game looks very good. Sounds probably are the coolest part, it reminds me of the movies we watched as a kid. I think though, I prefer the military genre of BF4 better. I prefer it over BFH as well.

I actually played some fighter squadron this morning. Man I sucked! The first 3 games I didn't get a single kill! I probably crashed myself to death 2-3 times. The next two games I got 1-3 kills although they were all boughts. Still looking for my first human kill. I really like the flying boards. I will try the Heroes and Villains later. I just wish you could play online with co-op. That would be so awesome.

Yep! I'm most familiar with the game on PS4 since that's what I did all my playing and broadcasting on while playing the beta. Twitch on Xbox One wouldn't let me stream the beta while it was still closed and invite only, so I spent all my time on PS4 since Twitch would let me broadcast on it.

I'm also probably gonna be buying more games on PS4 (after buying more on Xbox One than PS4 this year) as one of my friends is gonna finally make the jump to next gen.

Even though he's got a 360, he's planning on getting a PS4 sometime anywhere from next month to within the next year, mainly because he's also a really big baseball fan and really wants to play MLB The Show since MLB 2K died years ago.

So with him eventually jumping to PS4, I'll be more inclined to buy more games on PS4 that we will mutually want to play and likely play either together or against each other, stuff like GTA Online, Call of Duty, and sports games. Even though he's not a major soccer fan outside of the US Men's team/World Cup, I'm gonna work on talking his ass into buying FIFA and joining the glorious world of FIFA video game soccer. :)

I'm game! I was actually debating on buying it yesterday afternoon, just couldn't decide if I wanted to get Battlefront, Black Ops 3, or spend my money preordering Just Cause 3 or R6: Siege.

I've also got to figure out what Edition I'm gonna get. I may go Deluxe Edition and just pick up the season pass later down the road. $120 on a single game is a bit overkill on my wallet. I'd rather spend that $120-$130 and get two games out of it.

I also really gotta get a PS4 headset and mic. All I still have is that cheap little single earpiece/mic thing that came with the console.

Yep, we would have a serious upper hand over a team of randoms, being able to coordinate as an entire team during each game.

I'm loving it. I loved the beta so I knew I'd enjoy the full game.

One of the biggest complaints before release was that it wasn't going to have many modes, but what it does have is damn good enough so far. Droid Run, Cargo, Drop Zone, etc are all really fun! They keep you moving with objectives to complete, so it keeps the game flowing and from turning into just a TDM melee.

Fighter Squadon also is really fun. That might be one of my favorite modes just because I love flying, fighter jet and dogfighting type games. So it feels exactly like I'm playing those again.

Walker Assault will always been massive map fun and even my limited time playing Hero Hunt and Heroes vs. Villains was a blast. So you have, what is it? 9-10 modes that are all equally fun to play and you can just keep rotating to keep from playing one too much.

That's what we did Saturday night. We kept jumping from mode to mode and ended up playing until something like 3:30am EST.

Yeah, I do miss not having a campaign. I played the original Battlefront and Battlefront II back on the first Xbox. Those campaigns were so much fun, with dozens of AI flying and fighting all around you, fighting on the different planets in truly wide open battlefields with a plethora of vehicles. Fighting in space, being able to land in a landing bay of a ship and quickly get out and start fighting on foot. Get back in a ship and go dogfight in space.

God those games were great. I have a copy of the first Battlefront somewhere around here, and I've been looking at picking up a copy of Battlefront II on eBay for nostalgia purposes. So I'm one who would definitely be critical of the new game. However, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. It's a perfect pick up and play game and one I have no doubt I'll still be playing regularly months from now, especially as the DLC adds new maps and weapons.

And I saw EA is in this for the long run with another two games planned after this that will cover the prequels and elsewhere.

I have a friend who could possibly join us as well. He doesn't have the game and probably won't buy it but I have 2 systems and he has one so it wouldn't be a big deal to allow him to play on my Primary PS4 or make his PS4 my Primary one temporarily.

If you're unaware, when you have multiple systems you have to set one as your Primary system (it's easy to switch if needed). On your Primary system anyone can play any of the games you own and you can play any of your games on either system.

All pretty much released on consecutive months, $60 for the base game, anywhere from $89.99 to $119.99 for the Deluxe/Limited/Collectors Editions.

COD is about the only one guarantee to have sales out the ass. The others are fighting for the same money.

Between the holiday sales and eventually in the coming months as the bank account shock wears off, plus any potential sales, people will start looking at and picking up games like Syndicate and Battlefront more and more.

And they won't be disappointed. Despite all the bashing by dumbasses online who don't own the game and who have had no experience other than a beta and what they read online, this game is fun, the game modes are fun, while the lack of a campaign is a negative, the rest of the game more than makes up for it. And there is enough variety in maps in the game modes than only have "four maps", aka PLANETS, is not the least bit detracting.

I pre-ordered through Amazon and was e-mailed a code for the Jakku (Off) DLC. I entered it in today and I think it was just a disc unlock as nothing downloaded. (Assuming that once servers activate map it will show up in-game.)

I tried looking to see if the Ultimate Edition included it, but it's not clear. It only mentions the Season Pass being included. An article on the DLC on the official site says it's available 12/1 only for those who pre-ordered.

Turning Point is a vast Star Wars Battlefront game mode for 40 players, included in The Battle of Jakku. This mode portrays the efforts of the Rebel Alliance to defeat the Empire following the Battle of Endor. Lead Level Designer Dennis Brännvall explains:

The clock is ticking, but if the Rebel team succeeds with a capture additional time will be added and new control points will be available for capture. What kinds of vehicles will be featured in Turning Point?

Since the starfighters are occupied in the battle above or simply destroyed, we wanted to highlight airspeeders and AT-STs in this mode. In contrast to its role in Walker Assault or Supremacy, the AT-ST is a slightly more defensive vehicle in this mode. Piloting it, you will need to move between areas a lot to meet the Rebel assault. If you’re in an airspeeder on the other hand, you’ll be on the offence, giving supportive fire to your Rebel team mates.

Try going into the game, go to MULTILAYER and go all the way to the bottom of the screen where you choose the game type (Blast, Cargo, etc.). There is a placeholder for Jakku there and, if you click on it, it will take you to the PlayStation Store.

Maybe you can try your code there?

I'm assuming you bought a disc.

I would contact whoever you bought the disc from and see if they can get you another code. If that fails, I'd attempt to contact EA for one.

Played the new map and game mode tonight for a couple of rounds and I dig it. It's almost kind of like Rush from the old Battlefield 3 days but with Domination or Conquest attributes to each point.
