Bowling Ball Isaac Gordon returns to the starting role in 2018 after missing most or all of three games in 2017. Despite missing those games, he still managed to put together an 1100 yard rushing season with 22 touchdowns. Behind him is change-of-pace HB Dwight Butler who amassed over 1000 total yards from scrimmage himself in 2017. If Gordon happens to go down again this season, look for either Leo Lyles or even true freshman Derek Wheeler to get a lot more carries, otherwise, expect Wheeler to redshirt.

The receiver position is the most firm from 2017 with no players lost from a season ago. With X-Receiver Donald Boone deciding to come back for his senior season, coaches see great potential for improvement from 2017. With Boone's sure-hands, Z-Receiver Trey Strickland an outside threat, and Y-Receiver Dustin Burch the underneath jitterbug threat, the Gators look to be even stronger in the passing game this upcoming season. Perhaps the surprise of the team is big-bodied WR Walter Long who worked on his hands all last season and is ready for more this season. With this being the strongest group on the team, and add-in very strong QB depth, look for the possibility of more receivers on the field at any given time this season than last year.

While three defensive lineman graduate from the 2017 team, only DT Scott Dixon's loss will be felt. Dixon was a force in the middle of the line amassing a team-leading 9 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. That said, DT Brendan Owen is ready to be a force of his own taking over for Dixon. Beside him will be Eric Kerr who sat out last season to better learn the differences from playing inside versus outside after originally starting out as a DE. Outside, DE Anthony Newton also had a big year matching Dixon's stats from the albeit easier position at LE. Opposite him will be run-stuffer Shelton Howard who didn't necessarily shine but was solid in 2017 from the more difficult RE position. Behind them are mostly unproven players but the two to watch in spring training will be DEs Drew Gilliam and Scott Blount, both true freshman but likely only one will get to play in 2018.

The Linebacker position will have perhaps the greatest loss going into next season as they lose starters at both MLB and ROLB; the bigger of the two will be MLB Jason Mitchell. Mitchell had a nose for the football and so long as the coaches didn't get in his way, he would be on top of the football just about every play. Replacing them will be MLB Damon Baker and ROLB David Douglas. The duo are both very capable with good strength and excellent speed, though lacking the nose for the ball that Mitchell had.

In the Secondary, the biggest shuffle came from the Cornerback position. With both starters graduating, that left a big opening that the Florida coaches weren't able to fill during recruiting. As a result, former FS Jermaine Grant moves down to play the CB position; he is more than capable and will likely shine given his height and speed. Opposite him will be last year's Nickel, Jesse Wilcox who will also be up for the challenge of a starting role. Replacing Grant at FS will be Jonathan Jones who coaches have no question he can play the position after his limited role in 2017. At SS, Roderick Mixon returns as the starter after a phenomenal Freshman year leading the team in tackles. After the starters, the depth is a bit of a concern at DB... they all have some talent, but none are anywhere close to ready for every-down action with the exception of backup SS Justin Carter who may play many roles this upcoming season.

To make up for that, he worked on his leg strength in the offseason and now is ready to boot 60 yard field goals if called upon to do so. At Punter, walk-on Justin Johnson shined in 2017 winning the Ray Guy award as a true freshman. He's back and even better than a season ago. Can he put together four Guy awards over his career?

In the return game, WR Calvin Butler had a very successful year and likely would have won an award or two had he been able to find the endzone at all in kick returns. He did manage to give the offense short field countless times, but the award selection committees like more flash. As a result, Florida coaches may call upon the speedier Keith Grant to be the primary return man in 2018 hopefully giving that burst that Butler didn't quite have.

After the starters, the depth is a bit of a concern at DB... they all have some talent, but none are anywhere close to ready for every-down action with the exception of backup SS Justin Carter who may play many roles this upcoming season.

Kicker Ben Andrews returns after a moderately successfully 2017. He missed three field goals that hurt his season. To make up for that, he worked on his leg strength in the offseason and now is ready to boot 60 yard field goals if called upon to do so. At Punter, walk-on Justin Johnson shined in 2017 winning the Ray Guy award as a true freshman. He's back and even better than a season ago. Can he put together four Guy awards over his career?

In the return game, WR Calvin Butler had a very successful year and likely would have won an award or two had he been able to find the endzone at all in kick returns. He did manage to give the offense short field countless times, but the award selection committees like more flash. As a result, Florida coaches may call upon the speedier Keith Grant to be the primary return man in 2018 hopefully giving that burst that Butler didn't quite have.
