In 2013, QB Joey Jones threw for 3595 yards with a +16 TD:Int ratio… not bad stats for a QB in a new system but not quite good enough to earn the starting job for a second year. Florida coaches signed QB Ben Lewis who has more skills at the QB position and will fit in perfectly in the new pass-heavy offense of Florida. If Lewis struggles, Jones will still be ready to play but don't expect anymore than mop-up duty.

HB Randall Williams will once again lead the charge out of the backfield for the Gators after amassing 666 yards on the ground behind a depleted offensive line. This year not only will Williams have an improved Offensive Line but as well he'll have a Lightning to his Thunder. Complimenting Williams will be Freshman Dwight Butler who brings some much needed speed that the Gators didn't have last year. Look for the two to split carries depending on the situation.

WR Travis Anderson returns after an incredible season where he caught 110 passes for over 1500 yards with 14 touchdowns. Anderson will again be the go-to target regardless of what the defense throws at them but Florida returns all WRs from last year and added a handful to improve the overall core. Opposite Anderson at the Z will be Mark Chambers who has the next best hands behind Anderson. Added into the mix will be Tyler Pittman at the Y slot. Pittman's speed will mostly be used as a hybrid HB/WR allowing him to catch screens, run sweeps, and maybe some wildcat. With as many 4 & 5 receiver formations the Florida coaches plan to run, expect Travis Clifford to get his fair share of catches as well from the other slot position.

A season ago, perhaps Florida's worst position was the Tight End, at least on paper. Josh Johnson was the starter a season ago catching 26 passes for 250 yards; however, TE Avery Smiley enters the picture and not only has great hands but also has the best blocking ability of the trio. Look for Smiley to surpass Johnson's stats from a season ago and be more of a threat over the middle of the field.

Florida coaches knew that in 2014 they'd have to rebuild their entire offensive line so they set out to sign 5 fresh faces to start along the OL. With a mix of various talent, the Gators think they have a line they can build around in the coming years. While most of the new faces are more familiar with Run Blocking, LT Brandon Marquardt comes in ready to shore-up the blindside. Opposite him at RT will be the anchor for the OL, Anthony Mills.

Florida returns all 4 players at DE and added Freshman Eric Kerr. Kerr is by far the best of the bunch with good strength and decent ability to get off blocks to make the tackle; he'll get the start at the LE position. Opposite him will likely be Nick Martin who while doesn't quite have the strength that Kerr does, he does very good ability to get off blocks. The DEs won't be the highlight of the Florida defense but should be competent enough to get some pressure on the QB.

Dixon is perhaps one of the most important signings of the 2014 signing class, particularly among Freshman. The Gators were awful up the middle in run defense and Dixon is the perfect compliment to fellow DT Justin Johnson. Both possess very good strength for the middle of the line and both have a good ability to get off a block and make a tackle. Both will have quite a bit of playing time, even in some odd-front defenses that the Gators plan to run.

Florida returns it's strong Linebacker core with MLB Demetrius Stewart leading the way again in 2014. With a shift to a 4-2-5 base defense, look for Stewart and ROLB Scott Robinson to get most of the snaps, but Florida will occasionally put 4 LBs on the field with speedster LOLB Ronald Cox and Freshman ROLB Jason Mitchell contributing a fair amount. Behind those 4 is shallow but Freshman LOLB Trey Martinez will be next-man-up if the situation arises.

Florida coaches knew they had to immediately improve their Cornerbacks if they wanted to slow down opposing offense who shredded the Gators secondary. To get immediate relief, JUCO transfer Jonathan White steps in to the starting role and opposite him will be incoming Freshman Casey Jenkins. Both posess good coverage skills out of the gate but neither is the stud the coaches were hoping for. If White's coverage abilities can keep him from getting burned, that will be a big step but Jenkins will have to rely on his speed and agility to help him keep up. At the Nickel position will likely be Brian Jones but in this pass happy day & age, all 5 will likely get playing time over the course of the year.

Last year John Bell split time at both Free Safety and Corner but shined at the FS position. This year, Bell makes the permanent move to the Safety position to utilize his speed and deep zone coverage ability. After Bell, the depth gets very shaky with neither backup being very fast nor very good at coverage. Marcus Kane will likely ge tthe nod but fans will have to hope it doesn't come to that.

Safety Tye Gray comes in as the best overall signing of the 2014 recruiting class. With great speed, agility, jumping and zone coverage skills to compliment his good tacking, he'll be the man when it comes to shutting down the deep ball. To compliment Gray, Florida coaches plan to use newly signed Oliver Willis as a hybrid LB/SS role. Look for Willis to use his excellent speed and tackling ability to come off the edge in blitzes... just don't expect him to have to cover any opposing WRs.

Kicker Marcus Fields was solid in 2013 connecting on all 13 of his kicks, though his longest was from 46 yards out. Fields will once again bring his consistent leg to the kicking duties. Punter Richard Hooper will once again get the nod at punting but it's only because the entire Florida rugby team was expelled from school and coaches couldn't find anyone better down at the local YMCA.
