Another FCS game of the week

Northern Iowa at North Dakota State

Two top 5 undefeated teams battling it out. If this one was in Iowa I might take Northern Iowa as they gave a whipping last week to a pretty good McNeese St team. Since it is not, nod goes to NDSU.

Some interesting games this week. I'll check out both games Thursday night. I'll probably miss all of BYU-Utah State (unfortunately) thanks to work, but may catch the second half of Nevada-San Diego State.

Saturday, Air Force-Navy is going to be the top focus in the morning, if it's not cancelled because of the fucking idiots in Washington. If it does get played, I'll check out Illinois-Nebraska and Lehigh-Fordham during commercials and halftime. If it doesn't get played, I'll jump back and forth between the two games. 3:30, Rice-Tulsa will be the top game for me. I'll check in on the other three during halftime and commercials.

Night games, I'll probably focus on Ohio State-Northwestern, checking out Arizona State-Notre Dame and West Virginia-Baylor during breaks. And to cap the night, Washington-Stanford.

FIU just gave up 70 @ Louisville and So Miss 60 @ Boise. FIU lost by 21 to a descent at best FCS team at home. The game is at So Miss. So Miss wins 28-17.

Also some really sad for Sooner fans and Mack Brown.

United Airlines offers to fly Air Force to Navy game for free (http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/10/united-airlines-offers-to-fly-air-force-to-navy-game-for-free/)

The Navy-Air Force game is in jeopardy of being postponed because the Department of Defense suspended all intercollegiate athletics contests at Air Force, Army and Navy in light of the federal government shutdown.

One possibility being explored, according to the person who spoke to USA TODAY Sports, is whether Air Force could use private funds to make the trip and keep the game on schedule.

Well, United Airlines is offering to come to the rescue, tweeting Wednesday afternoon a solvable option to negate Air Force’s travel expenses to Saturday’s sold-out football game in Annapolis, Md.: An apparent free flight.

I still say fuck you to all of Washington, D.C. Especially since these games were pretty much still able to be played without problem from everything I've read, but were pretty much being hung out to dry at a fucking PR move and playing politics by the Department of Defense.

And there is the other end of the spectrum.............why is service academy football an "essential" expenditure of government?

I haven't seen much of :Florida: yet, but if y'all can stop the run then you can probably beat :Arkansas: by 2 TDs. I've heard that Florida sometimes has trouble scoring, but the Hogs' defense has a way of making the opposing offense look great. Hopefully this will be a fun game.

SmoothPancakes

And there is the other end of the spectrum.............why is service academy football an "essential" expenditure of government?

It's not an expenditure of government. Navy's football program (and entire athletic department if I'm remembering right) is completely self-sufficient and has no appropriated congressional funds and uses no appropriated funds.

Air Force and Army, their athletic departments are partially funded by and run with appropriated funds, but they have non-appropriated funds that they can use for football travel and games. All three academies submitted paperwork to the Pentagon detailed as such, and the Secretary of Defense approved this weekend's games to go ahead as planned. And home games are still fine for all three academies. It's the away games that are the issue due to travel, partly because upper-class Cadets at the Air Force Academy (not sure how it's handled at Army and Navy) are considered full military personal, so they may be subject to travel restrictions under the shutdown.

So, again, it's nothing but a bunch of PR bullshit. Because it potentially wouldn't look good with hundreds of thousands of government and defense civilian employees and contractors left hanging on furlough, while the academies (government run institutions) still play football and all of their other sports, so the Department of Defense went through all this bullshit to put on a pointless dog and pony show. And we'll keep going through this bullshit week after week as long as the shutdown lasts. They'll say the games are suspended that week, then Wednesday or Thursday, the Secretary of Defense will approve them to be played, rinse, wash and repeat.

Edit - Straight from the horse's mouth.

The football teams will be allowed to play because the games are paid for with non-appropriated funds, and have been long planned. Non-appropriated funds generally come from outside sources and are not approved through Congress.

Earlier in the day, Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk said he was optimistic the Pentagon would allow the games to be played.

He said the athletic department had provided information to Pentagon officials to assure them that no government funds will be spent on any aspect of the game. Gladchuk said a Navy home game brings in about $4 million from tickets, sponsorship, television and radio rights fees and other revenues such as parking and concessions. The game essentially pays for itself, he said.

Football revenue also funds Navy's 32 other sports teams.

"It would be devastating to our budget," Gladchuk said about having a home game canceled.

If you've played Air Force, Weber State, and San Jose State in 3 of your first 5 games, you should have great stats. (With that schedule, you should also be in the SEC).

They did lose their QB tonight, otherwise it would have been a closer game. They only lost two games last year and have been to a bowl the past two years. For Utah State, that is pretty damn good. I do not recall this much success at Utah St since the Merlin Olsen years. So yeah, they have been somewhat relevant lately.

If you've played Air Force, Weber State, and San Jose State in 3 of your first 5 games, you should have great stats. (With that schedule, you should also be in the SEC).

Still butthurt? Got to let the negativity go :D

Oh, you're talking about the MNC. Nah.

To be honest, of the sports and teams that I follow, college football is 4th on the list. Just not that important. Besides, in my lifetime I've seen every one of my teams win a championship other than the Astros (baseball is 5th on my list) and they will probably never win one. When your teams have success it makes the bad easier to take. I was over the MNC by halftime, just like I realized the Steelers were in for a LONG season this year during the 3rd quarter of the opener. When you get old, it's just not THAT important anymore. Certainly not worth carrying any butthurt. :)

In case you're wondering, my list looks like this:

1) Steelers
2a) Penguins
2b) Chelsea
4) Irish Football

distant 5) Astros (baseball is a great sport, but MLB ruins it)
extremely distant 6) Rockets (haven't given a shit about the NBA in 16 years, but I'm a Rockets fan if a gun is put to my head)

Navy with the big win today over Air Force!

Midshipmen started off slow, not able to get much going on offense in the first half. Thus, Air Force took a 10-7 lead into halftime. But it was all Navy in the second half, as the offense scores 21 points, getting the run game and the pass game rolling, and the defense shuts out Air Force for the entire second half and forces two turnovers, recovering a fumble with 8 minutes left, and then intercepting a pass with around 2 or 3 minutes left.

Most importantly, Navy is in the driver's seat for their second consecutive Commander-in-Chief's Trophy! A win over Army on December 14th, and the C-I-C remains in safe hands in Annapolis. :)

I was about to rip FIU's suck ass kicker a new one. And their suck ass defense, giving up penalties for 5 and 15 yards to left Southern Miss get in field goal position at the end. :fp:

Well, look at the positive. You're only halfway to Northwestern's FBS record 34 game losing streak from 1979-1982.

And if you really wanted to suck, you guys have one hell of a long way to go, trying to match Prairie View A&M's ridiculous 80 game losing streak from 1989-1998.

stat line of the week

Might want to peep the Baylor stats from last night. Baylor almost put up as many rushing yards as New Mexico and for grins were just 4 yards shy of 400 more in the air. They could have easily put up 1,000 yards of offense of their starters played the whole game. I dread seeing OU head to Waco later this year and it is a Thursday game too. Of course that is weeks from now, next week is pure unadulterated hate.

I'm more impressed with the 541 yards rushing and only 67 yards passing rather than New Mexico rushing 56 times and passing only 8. The rushing yards are the bigger "stat line of the week" for me.

that's why I put it up. I just thought the whole thing was unusual and therefore funny too. Didnt expect to see something so imbalanced and yet successful at the same time for a game of 2 not good teams. I actually wanted to see if ESPN had a replay of the whole game but they didn't like they do so many others each week

because it was unusual for so many people to get carries as opposed to passes caught. And logically I figure youll look at the yards anyway.

for all I know, maybe its common to platoon that many runners in some sort of option offense ? but since I don't know that, the stat line was unusual to me of so many different carriers

For run heavy teams or option teams, yes. The Air Force-Navy game, Air Force had 9 different rushers, Navy had 8. Plus, with New Mexico, that game was a fucking blowout. So you had first stringers and backups, then second stringers coming in (plus probably some freshmen in there as well in the fourth quarter). So you're going to have a ton of runners at the end of a game when your team is running the ball so much, and also winning in a complete blowout.
