Road To Glory question. Playing as a halfback.

I started the road to glory mode playing as a halfback. Some of the plays call for passing. My guy will be open 9 times out of 10 but i cant get the qb to throw me the ball. It says hit x when ready for the ball. The x lights up but when i try to throw it to him by clicking the x, he still throws it elsewhere. Thats the best i can describe it.
