I'm trying to decide if the graphics look good, or if they look too arcadey. I don't think they look bad necessarily, but do they look real? Cut scenes look good, but live gameplay...something just looks off. Is it just me?

Yeah, got it. Some HUGE holes to run through in those few plays. Will have to see how it plays out but it really seems like running the ball will be the way to go again.

Here are my notes. Obviously things can change between now & July.
First play shows bad Safety Alignment... Strong Safety (short side of the field) is halfway between the sideline and the hash. Free Safety (wide side), is near the center of the field. To my understanding, both should be closer to their respective hashes.
New OL animation has them all take a side-step at the snap... not sure if just on Read Option or what. Not certain whether realistic or exaggerated for the game.
First play, I assume short side slot CB recognizes the play early... otherwise he just left his WR uncovered. Everyone else appears to play man.
On the second play, I like that CB #20 doesn't instantly recognize the run... he doesn't see it until he turns back around.
3rd play, 2nd & goal from the 7, why does the defense come out in Quarters? Should be in a Nickel or at worst a Dime Normal IMO.
3rd play, 0:32 of the video, HB gets stood up with several defenders around. One defender right on top of him tries to make a clean-up tackle but never engages... instead falls on his face (#39 I believe)
4th play, in no huddle, defense goes from a Quarters defense to a Dime? but the CB/SS moves to the DT. Theoretically DE should move inside, MLB move to DE, and SS move to LB. That said, defense shouldn't be able to make that formation change since it's different personnel.
4th play, you hear the defensive chatter calls out the screen, but doesn't seem that anyone reacts to it.
4th play, RG peels off to block for the screen but heads up field and lays out a defender... so long as they call ineligible receiver downfield for throwing it past the LOS, then I like that the OL will get up field.
OL run blocking assignments look improved overall especially as it relates to downfield blocking.
Foot planting is still not as prevalent as it should be... several small examples with small cuts but the worst is on the replay of the touchdown. At 1:05, he catches and turns up field but does so without actually putting any kind of weight on his plant foot... just kind of turns & glides.

I like the blocking animations, thats all inside zone steps - not 100% correct but much better. Looks as though the blocking assignments have been tweaked but they still aren't correct.
Defensive read and react seems much like NCAA 13, and in a lot of cases defenders are out of position before the play even starts.

That's good. I couldn't see any defensive pressure in that video. It was nothing but the offense driving the defense back 10+ yards. While I love that the offensive line will now actually block defenders, they shouldn't be driving them 10+ yards down field every play. So hopefully that was just from the video being on a lower difficulty without any sliders set.

I do not like the suction blocking on the CB on play 1. He reads the play but then gets sucked into the block and turned away from the play.
Why wouldn't E3 have a final retail copy ready? The game releases in a month and is basically done. Madden may still have some rough edges but the NCAA game shown at E3 should be very close to final if not final.
That video did concern me with regards to player momentum. The last few years I have felt Madden has had a little more realistic movement than NCAA. The NCAA guys prefer super tight and twitchy controls. The Madden guys have promised better foot planting and the elimination of zig zag running. I expect to read similar impressions at E3 and that will certainly impact my decision if I want to give NCAA another chance. CPU AI is a biggy for me as well.

Yeah this is the final game at this point (or damn close to it). I suppose EA could have released a really old version but why a month until release would they do that.
I just don't see anything really "revolutionary" this year. You either lacked the past few additions of NCAA or you didn't. Nothing this year is going to change your opinion one way or the other.

I wasn't impressed with the TD Cut scenes. as soon as he ran into the endzone it cut the HB dropping the ball on the turf with no one celebrating, then to a wipe with the running back's name...., then cuts back to the player celebrating with teammates dropping the ball to the turf again.... then the TD wipe to the replay (with the same bad replay angles from last year). All in all i think it is to choppy of a process. I remember one demo, I think they had the players celebrating as soon as they crossed the pylons but it was taken out due to NCAA not liking it or something. I wish there was a smoother more "realistic" way for this all to happen. I have a feeling that when I want to skip the pointless wipe of the player who scored the TD it is going to skip the replay of my Touchdown, which would be bad because I like watching good replays.

Just a thought but he could be blitzing... if that's the case, I don't like that the WR doesn't even try to get there to block him before going up field.
Consider me underwhelmed... I will get the game & play it a ton I'm sure but a lot of the same things are going to piss me off I'm sure. I think that next-gen will provide the jump necessary for them to get past some of these legacy issues. Not saying that all of them are ok to still be there but, it is what it is at this point.

If he is blitzing then the read DE should not have crashed the way he did. I was thinking the same thing but not sure what the play call was.
Compared to last year and the year b4 that, this years graphics look pasty, the field looks artificial, the players are smaller. The demo (or E3) will tell the real story.

I'm definitely feeling the same way and am glad I'm not the only one. The grass seems almost too green and flat. The colors look brighter but still look off in a way. I'm not sure what it is but it might possibly be that the change is so drastic so quickly that we just aren't used to it?
I also would have thought we would see some better tackling, the 3rd play I think is one that really irks me because it looks just like an NCAA game in that one man makes contact with the runner and then no other defender does despite having opportunities to affect the play. Granted, I will play the demo and have more thoughts on this but as of right now I am leaning on passing over this game for the first time since '09.

They need to release a video with Slow game speed. EA's football games animations look smoother when you slow them down. Normal or above makes things look unrealistic and herky jerky imo.

I remember when I first saw gameplay of Madden NFL 13 and in comparison to the 2012 edition it was hard to see a difference. But when I played the game I could tell a huge difference! You can't judge the new engine until you've played it. I personally could see the differences. Not just in the new engine, but the blocking, cutting, and total fluidity of the game. I am concerned that, IMO, the player movement looks WAY too similar to last year. Hopefully it is just because of the plays called or the skill level, but I am worried that the pass rush will be an issue still as well. Looking forward to the demo so I can actually get a feel for how the IE 2.0 is working.

I have a question for a gamechanger. On the screen pass, after the catch the HB's fatigue bar steadily draining even though he doesn't make any moves. Is that the rate it depletes by simply running or do you think he was using the speed burst?

Did you see the same footage... better yet, have you seen ALL of the gameplay clips? You can't promise that. I guarantee you there are at least 50 ppl here who know as much as you and have spent more time reading about, talking about, giving suggestions for and analyzing this game and comparing it to previous versions than you. GUARANTEE. Plus, 3 more that have actually played early versions of 14. I'm not saying you're totally wrong, but we have a whole bunch of guys that have analyzed everything about the game for the past 5 years or more, year round.
The analysis off of that gameplay clip is pretty stellar from what I see. There are things that are better, but there are things that still aren't fixed and that's a fact based on what we see in the clip. Hopefully it's kinda old and some things have been tweaked, but things like alignment and contact can be judged by this footage. The new "force impact" engine along with the 2.0 should come into play when the RB is stood up at the goal line and it simply DOES NOT! It's the same animation based tackle of the last decade!
CLW's right. You either like it or you don't at this point in this gen. If you don't, then you're not going to love 14. I happen to love it, but there's a LOT of work to be done. We all know it will never be real but good grief

That clip did absolutely nothing in terms of getting me excited for the game. I understand it was Varsity or whatnot, but still the offense seems way too overpowered. The defense just appears to be out there to be out there. No sense of getting the ballcarrier, or making a play.
Hopefully next week we'll see a ton more videos and ones that are played on higher difficulties to see how the defense plays/reacts/lines up.

I'm in the same boat. I was starting to let my expectations rise for NCAA 14 thinking they could possibly win me back but the player movement just seemed weak for me. I know last year the Madden guys said you had to play it to feel it (it was true to a degree) but in one of Tommy's answers about foot planting in the Q & A thread he didn't seem to be able to say how much better it was. It should have been night and day better if they had true physics since player movement has always been bad in the past imo. This video confirmed that.
I'd say with the foot-planting that it will be better but how much better I can't really say...
The NCAA team from the get-go has always sacrificed true player momentum for more player control. It's the way they like it.
As for difficulty, the demo better have those options again instead of just Varsity like last year. I'm hoping for sliders too.

I have a question for a gamechanger. On the screen pass, after the catch the HB's fatigue bar steadily draining even though he doesn't make any moves. Is that the rate it depletes by simply running or do you think he was using the speed burst?
It's hard to be certain. They didn't have the stamina bars that well defined in March but if I had to venture a guess, the user is probably mashing down the speed burst.

IMO, the game looks a lot smoother from last year's game. The running motions seems less jerky than last years game. It also looks a little slower than last year's normal speed. But you can tell this is on Freshman/Varsity (as these clips USUALLY are). The colors do pop more, though I'm wondering if it's a bit overdone, especially on the field.
On the first play, I liked how the lineman took a sidestep to sell the RB taking the handoff. It looks a BIT exaggerated, but the same thing is done in real-life (and this WASN'T done in NCAA 13). Even though LSU probably would NEVER get driven off the ball like that, I do like the fact that lineman and receivers actually look to block downfield when no one is in front of them, instead of turning around to block a guy out of the play (look at #23 and #64). Also, the post-play cutscene had relevant players interact with the QB (that is, guys who were near him at the end of the play).
On the second play, one thing I noticed is that the slot DB played the pass until the WR he was covering went to block the safety, THEN he turned around, instead of magically knowing it was a run. The cuts seemed a bit too quick though, it made the end of the play look a little weird. And it looked like another cutscene was going so I like that we'll see different interaction after a big play instead of the same dry ones.
I wonder why the defense came out in a quarter (?) look when there were only 4 WRs. It then looked like they switched to a Dime Man/Zone combo on the 4th, but it made the DB go to the D-Line in a prowl look, which I thought wasn't supposed to be possible. I also wish the TD celebrations were connected to the end of the play, instead of playing out in a cutscene.

The point was it looked pretty janky during actual gameplay. It was their first attempt at 3D grass and it was not pretty.

You might also remember they canned the 3d grass in 2008 because people hated the style.
This year the field looks clean and colorful, not blotchy and dull like the past couple years during actual gameplay.

Because it's essentially our first true look at game play. While it may be on either Freshman or Varsity, there are still things that can be seen that show what they did or didn't fix. It also helps to give us areas of potential concern to look at when the full gameplay videos come out. We're not throwing the game in the trash, we're just identifying potential issues that may show up in the final product.
For me alone, looking at blocking, no way in hell would the LSU defensive line get just completely obliterated and driven into the secondary like that. So now I know to be looking very closely at the line interaction/blocking when the full gameplay videos and demo come out. Others have mentioned CBs, safeties, the secondary, man/zone, reads, etc. It simply gives us something to look for in the weeks ahead to see if there are going to be any glaring problems in the final game itself.
Since we pay $60 for this game, we have a right to analyze video clips and various media, even if they are only one minute long. As I stated before, I have purchased every single NCAA dating back to NCAA Football 2001 and Gamebreaker in the late 90s. I have spent a load of money on this series, by my count, somewhere over $700 over the years, and have invested thousands of cumulative hours, well into the hundreds on each edition with my various dynasties. The amount of money and time that I have invested over the last 15 or so years in this series, I've earned the right to criticize something in this game or point out issues, even if it's only in a one minute video clip.
And while some may be doing so (usually the same people bitching about anything and everything every year looking for any reason to hate the game), others of us are not throwing the game in the trash. We're just pointing out potential issues. I have been almost always positive about the game year after year. Even when there have been actual issues in the final product some years, I try to stay positive about the game and point out the good things about the game on here and elsewhere. I'm still very positive about this game, and eagerly awaiting its release and have had it preordered on Amazon for months now, since at least February.
So me pointing out potentially suspect blocking is not me throwing it in the trash. It's me identifying a potential issue for myself and others to more closely analyze next week during E3 and after the demo comes out and to give a much more watchful eye at in the final product. Same with the others pointing out issues. Many of us have bought the game every single year and have logged hundreds of hours into each edition of the game. To claim that we're throwing the game in the trash just because we pointed out potential issues in a one minute clip is asinine and ignorant.

Yeah, my game purchases have dropped off significantly. I only buy certain games without question each year (only 4 or 5 are in that elite group) and the rest I watch some real gameplay vids by players on Youtube in the weeks/months after release. Then if a game catches my fancy, I buy it weeks/months down the road when the price has dropped $20 or $30+.

So you're saying that there shouldn't be any opinions, positive or negative, since its a one minute clip? Or we shouldn't point out concerns or negative opinions we have on the clip?
Yes and no to a sense. I mean it's like they are breaking down each play and each motion over on OS. It's a little silly. To me you can't really judge that much on a one min clip until you play a demo well at least I can't any how. I enjoyed the one minute clip. It was great to see the game in motion . Yes it had some flaws etc. But I don't need to break down to every second like they are doing. It is like everyone is disappointed over there and some are saying they are not going to buy it now because of a one minute clip :fp: get real people. But again each there on what they analyze and hate on the one minute clip. It's just a little over board is all I'm saying. Just wait until you play the demo before you go and say the game is gonna be crap. For my self I can't wait!

This thread is hilarious lmao.
In regards to the gameplay video, it wasn't too groundbreaking, but there's not too many sports games in which gameplay videos really are. I tend to look for things, and see how it applies to the demo, and then retail. The infinity engine was more noticeable when Madden 13 videos surfaced, and even more prevalent once the demo was released. I think because I've been playing Madden 13 for awhile, the engine in this video isn't eye-popping like it would be to exclusive NCAA players. Instantly, I realized that alignment issues are still in the game, which makes the personnel based audibles even worse. The main reason I would come out in dime, then audible down to 4-3 is to have corners properly align on TE's. With this new audible system, that is impossible, which makes the alignment issues all the more worse. It's hard to tell how effective read option will be, as well as how the defense will play because we're watching it on Varsity. Clearly, these videos are to show off certain elements of the game, so I have no problem with it being on Varsity, or Freshman.
I just need to get my hands on the game, that's the only way I'll be able to get a true feel on how the second year of the engine will play. With that in mind, there's no reason to overreact to the video in any way with the exception of alignment issues. That issue will be there regardless of the difficulty level.

First play, focus on WR #23. What in the world is he doing?
Second play, I really like the overall response of the secondary. Everyone is playing pass, CBs have their heads turned and the safeties react once the handoff is made. My only problem here is with the play call defensively (in 3-2-6 with no real help in the box).
Fourth play, I don't like that in order to set up the screen the QB is dropping back 10 yards. The play takes 3 seconds from snap to the pass being thrown, I think screens should develop more quickly than that. Also problematic is the immediate defensive shift. Not only on moving a DB into the DT slot, but just that the defense in that situation with no shift from the offense is making wholesale adjustments. This leads me to believe the constant defensive shifting to audibles will also continue and that at higher difficulty levels the CPU will be choosing correctly more often.

As to those that keep suggesting "wait until retail" to judge the game.......many are judging the info we get up to retail release to determine if we will actually purchase the game.

the truth is the game would be visually annoying if all players had the same or the wrong facemask.
Its a video game so of course the visuals make up a large part of its entertainment value no matter how much you mock it.
All the fanatics who try to downplay that visuals aren't important and they buy the game for strategy bla bla. That point of view became invalid after visuals became more 3 dimensional looking and rounded as the ps1 was becoming the ps2.
half the appeal and success of this and any sports game or any other game for that matter are the visuals and the color etc.
if visuals weren't important, team-builder wouldn't even be an idea that was thought of and came to pass.
it is a video game. Not Strat-o-matic baseball.

Hey I really want high end grass. I was not kidding. I have no problem with the other stuff if there is time to add it but we need improved sidelines, crowds and a chain crew before socks and jocks. Won't be seeing any of these things until next gen anyway. Pretty sure the art department is hard at work on the next gen Madden right now and you really can't expect too much change in the final editions of the 360/PS3 versions.

last year was the first time I downloaded a demo. seems silly playing against AI in a cheap version that had very little to do with the final product. I get just as much fun playing this years till I get the new one.
I must like it, Ive played it twice as much as Madden LOL. I don't bother paying attention to the over analyzing of what the demo does or doesn't do anyway. Just a bunch of pointless talkity-talk till the game comes out.

It was just announced a bit earlier at E3, they won't be releasing a demo this year, working on the game trying to finish it up too late into the cycle to release one. Instead you'll have to wait until Season Ticket to play the game, if you have bought Season Ticket. If you haven't bought it yet, Season Ticket has been increased to $35 a year, but it only includes three games. If you want to get the full EA lineup that they offer for Season Ticket, you'll have to pay $50 a year.

Not big on the Season Ticket deal. That's raw. But I actually don't mind that they're working on it for the full cycle! I'll take no demo IF it means they legitimately improved pressing issues. Not sure if we'll ever know if that's the case but...
