PS4 & XB1 Preview from Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/ea-says-need-for-speed-rivalss-open-world-chases-are-n-509493300):

New video game hardware is coming down the pike and those machines are going to need showpieces, games that show off why the PS4 and Xbox One are a significant step ahead of their predecessors. The guys making Need For Speed Rivals—the next installment of the long-running racing series–believe that they’re making one of those showpiece games. It’s coming out on November 19th for current-gen consoles (except Wii U) and PC, with PS4 and Xbox One versions to follow later this year.

You play as either cops or illegal racers in Need for Speed Rivals, which is an open-world title set in fictional Redview County. Racers’ rewards are tied to dodging cops, driving as crazily as possible and capturing those stunts on video. Cops, of course, are trying to stop all of that.

Rivals is being made by Ghost Games, a new studio in Sweden staffed by former developers from DICE. Ghost Games executive producer Marcus Nilsson worked on the Shift franchise and built Shift 2: Unleashed with co-workers. Criterion director Craig Sullivan is part of that team now and Nilsson calls Rivals a co-operative effort between Ghost and Criterion.

Yes, they’re aiming to make the next Need for Speed an eye-popping visual feast that takes advantage of DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine. But, Marcus Nilsson says that it’s connectivity—and not graphics—that’s pushing the evolution of NFS.

The game’s AllDrive feature is supposed to smash the line between single-player and multiplayer, said Nilsson. “Imagine you’re playing Need for Speed Rivals as a cop in a pursuit,” Nilsson said, starting in on an explanation of the new mode. “You’re going through the levels of the game and collecting points. I’m your friend, so when I join the game, I’m being put in your world. The world is pretty big, right? I can be on a different side of the map and I’m doing my thing in my play progression, being a racer, being chased by cops and collecting Speedpoints.”

“Then, our experiences can merge so we happen to be on the same street, which means that you can start going after me. Or if we’re both cops, we can go after the racer that we were chasing together,” Nilsson continued. “Really, we’re going seamlessly through player action from playing alone to playing in co-op. The game will then adjust to this and give you objectives which are based on playing together with a friend and change the score to make it obvious to you that you’re playing together with someone.”

I won't be impressed with any future need for speed games until they bring back underground series or something similar. Forza is close as it gets.

Sources are now claiming that the PS4 version of “Need For Speed: Rivals” is being delayed on PS4. Launch titles Watch Dogs and first-party exclusive DriveClub were previously delayed due to rumored issues with the PS4′s network connectivity.

Amazon now lists the release date for both the PS4 and Xbox One versions as December 30th, which most likely is a placeholder. This could point to all versions of the game being delayed, most likely until Spring 2014.

Developing.

Driveclub getting delayed is only going to help this title. Hopefully it's good.

The Need for Speed franchise is moving to the EA SPORTS label (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-11-05-need-for-speed-shifts-to-ea-sports-leadership).

EA Sports FIFA general manager Matt Bilbey will be overseeing the future work of Ghost Games, the new EA studio that controls the Need for Speed franchise.

"Matt will run FIFA, he runs UFC, but he also runs NHL (or has people that report up to him)," Soderlund told Polygon. "We're also putting Need for Speed and our driving business under Matt. We think that could benefit from from fresh eyes, could benefit from some different thinking, and we think that Matt is the right guy to do that."

"I think that we can learn a lot from the sports games and what they've done," Soderlund said. "When you play a sports game, the controller in your hand will dictate how good the game is. It's all about player control and input and how it feels. It's a feeling, right? I think that focus on pure gameplay, is something that can benefit the Need for Speed brand in a very positive way."

Soderlund said he found it "highly unlikely" that moving Need for Speed under EA Sports would signal a series shift towards simulation-style racing.

"It's a way for us to push innovation and push a different creative brain or mindset onto Need for Speed," he added.

That sounds more like a cost-cutting measure by EA than anything else. One man "runs" (whatever that means) 4 games now.

I guess this has flown under my radar. This could be a launch title for me, since Drive Club got pushed back.

I'm not sure if I've ever owned a NFS game. Without watching that video above, just looking at the image of the cop car with a spoiler and lightning :D and all that, I'm guessing these games are pretty arcady, yes?

I wouldn't call it arcadey, but maybe that is the right word. They play up the crashes, but each car is relatively realistic and has strengths/weaknesses.

The cheese comes in when (in the last NFS, for example) you crash a boss off the road - only for them to go into warp speed and catch & pass you. :fp: They are especially fun IMO if you have some friends to compete and play with online. That's been the best part of the franchise for me.

Maybe I haven't paid enough attention, but I still don't fully know what AllDrive is or does. A better video (or two) of that might sway me to pick this one up. Until then, I'm waiting to hear reviews first.

Did you ever play Burnout Paradise (PS3/360)? That's the EA racing game I think a lot of people want to see a sequel for, but for some reason it hasn't happened yet - despite being a Greatest Hits title. Instead they seem set on pumping out NFS titles every year or two.

The idea of boss levels in a racer is an instant turn off.

A next gen Burnout Paradise would definitely get my motor running. Pun intended.
