Mark Sanchez tried to throw his remote at the TV after Geno Smith was drafted, but the remote hit the ground before it could make it to the TV.

So, who do the Jets get rid of? They have Buttfumble, Tebow, Greg McElroy from 2011 and now Geno Smith. Someone's getting shoved out the door, either via trade or cut.

Pretty sure Tebow was already out the door before the draft.

That would be my guess. Denver definitely came out ahead in the end in that trade. :D

SmoothPancakes

Oh fuck! :fp: Unless it's a straight trade and the Jets don't just cut Tebow, that means now we're going to have to listen to ESPN masturbate themselves nonstop about where Tebow will end up all over again. Well, actually we'll have that even if it is a trade. Goddamn you Tebow. :fp:

Kinda hoping Da Bears get Eddie Lacy or Monte Ball. I'm not 100% sure on Michael Bush's contract status.

SmoothPancakes
04-26-2013, 06:42 PM
Thinking about it, I actually wouldn't mind Denver drafting a QB in the next few rounds. After Peyton, all we have is Brock Osweiler. That literally is all we have, just those two. So they'll be looking for a backup or a player to compete with Osweiler after Peyton retires.

LeeSO
04-26-2013, 06:52 PM
And the Jets take Geno Smith. So long to your NFL career Tebow. And better start learning how to hold a clipboard Buttfumble.

The Jets taking Smith pisses me off. I'm a fan of Tebow. He may not be the sexiest QB or have the best arm, but damn if he doesn't carry himself extremely well and win ballgames. I hate the Jets trading for him last year and not giving him a fucking chance. I really just want him to have a legitimate fucking chance. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but that's just how I feel. (end rant)

I love how ESPN keeps showing Mathieu at his home or wherever he is. Looking all sad that he isn't drafted yet. Well when you can't count how many drug tests you've failed, and you no show interviews cuz you're "sick"....you might be lucky to get drafted at all.

I think Nassib is going to be the most consistent QB of this group. Tampa Bay probably saw more of Glennon to be more comfortable in taking a 3rd rounder on him. No one, including Tampa in the 3rd round doesn't NEED a QB.

I wouldn't mind Denver taking a QB this round. We have Manning and Osweiler. That's it. There are no other QBs on the roster. So unless they plan on finding some middle-ground career backup QB in free agency, they're gonna have to take someone in the draft. I'd rather they take Nassib and let him and Osweiler battle it out after Manning retires.

To me, I think he's the best QB in the class. He's the most consistent. Just looking at 2012 alone, no more than 2 INTs in one game. He's just steady.

matt barkley has been a starting qb for 8 consecutive years. he's been the only 3 time captain in USC history.

the o-line was shit piss-poor last season for USC. give barkley a good LT like the 2011 season and matt kalil, and look at what barkley can do.

I think Nassib is one of those "draft guys". People you never hear anything about all season then once the draft comes up, one person talks about him then everybody else does because they don't want to seem like the guy that missed out. I think if your own head coach passed on you to draft a QB no one expected to go first that should say something...

Shannon was a horrible recruiter. He left us with 4 commits when he was fired that November. He had 1 good class in 08(in which it was all from 1 school MNW). Left us with no depth at multiple positions including QB, WR, DL LB, CB, and safety. It has been a complete rebuild since he left because of the shape he left the program.

Yeah I think everyone is in agreement that there were simply no really good prospects at the QB position this season so guys "slid" from where QBs are normally taken. Interesting the Eagles picked up Barkley they have like 4 QBs on the roster now.

He was the head coach. It all falls on his shoulders, lol. With thinking like that you could be president of the NCAA. He burned bridges at most of the high schools in South Florida that are still being rebuilt.

i'm bouncing back between points, but you're still missing both of them. even though shannon was the HC, his opinion never mattered to brennan carroll, who always controlled who the other coaches went after. carroll chose to go after the 4/5* national players, instead of building a fence around south florida. carroll ended up missing more than he hit.

shannon is a good recruiter. USC was interested in him for a longtime to be their DC this upcoming season, and a big factor of that were his ties to the florida high schools.

ryby6969
04-27-2013, 01:57 PM
I am not missing the point at all. Being the HEAD COACH, he is in charge of all operations. Carroll has not had a problem recruiting players since Golden has got there. Just like after Shannon left, no player could bench 225lbs more than 30 times. Now with the same S&C coach, we have guys doing it 40 times. He was in way over his head, and I would feel sorry for you if you guys got him as D-coord. There is a reason he has not received more than just a job a LB coach. You are entitled to your own opinion, but as a lifetime Canes fan I can tell you that the 10 years of having him and Coker as head coach were as bad as almost any penalty the NCAA could hand down. He left this program as a shell of itself.

Missed most of the draft after being asleep all afternoon. That 2-10am work shift on Saturday mornings really ruins the rest of the day.

Like the Tavarres Kings pick. Denver has been good with picking WRs in the draft, so hopefully he'll become yet another weapon in a list full of dangerous WRs. The DE and OT picks, eh, I'll have to see how/if they pan out.

Overall a good draft by Denver. Took care of their needs at DT, CB and RB with good pickups. With a full house of running backs, Montee Ball won't be required to put up huge numbers immediately, but he can be worked in on the field in various situations this first year and become a bigger workhorse over the next year or two. Sylvester Williams will also help out big time at DT. Denver's getting the job done on solidifying that front line on the defense.

Sweet! Denver takes Zac Dysert, QB from Miami OH with their last draft pick. Dysert hails from Ada, Ohio, just on the other side of Lima, who my old high school has played multiple times in the HS playoffs over the year, including against Dysert himself. Definitely a player I hope is able to stick in the pros and stay with Denver. I'd enjoy watching him on Sundays.

Two Arkansas State players have already signed FA contacts... QB Ryan Aplin (CLE) and WR Taylor Stockemer (MIA). That plus safety Don Jones was picked by Miami in the 7th round.

What can you tell me about Don Jones?

Dolphins hit for some needs with their mid and late picks. They really needed a blocking TE and there were only two good ones so they took Dion Sims in round 4. He'll never be a great pass catcher but fills that need. Same with taking a kicker at the bottom of round 5. Dan Carpenter has been ordinary and makes $3 million! Job and cap savings on the line.

One thing I will never understand is NFL teams paying punters $3 million a year. I know NFL coaches like field position but most stats reports state teams should be going for it more and not punting. If I was an owner I would limit my GM to paying no more than $1 million for a punter, use the extra money elsewhere and tell the coach to show some balls and go for it more often.

Overall I'm happy with Miami's draft. I was stunned when they moved up (ripped the Raiders off with that sweet deal) and took Dion Jordan instead of Lane Johnson. We desperately needed another pass rusher so I was happy. We drafted a couple good CBs as we needed to get younger and cheaper there. Filled some depth concerns at LB, blocking TE and kicker. But we didn't do much for the OL. Took a LG in round 3 but the Dolphins tackle situation is scary unless Jonathon Martin improves a LOT this year. They should sign FA Winston at RT. That would make me feel a whole lot better. We didn't grab a young WR but the Dolphins look good everywhere on paper - except on the OL. Of course if Tannehill doesn't keep improving it means nothing.

He's a safety/nickel hybrid... Not spectacular at coverage but he's very fast and loves to hit hard. Overall he's a great athlete and will probably able to contribute however they want to use him.

Looking forward to seeing how he develops.

Browns undrafted free agency signings

QB Ryan Aplin - Arkansas State - 6-1, 202 lbs. (Source) Sobo says, "Interesting aspect of Aplin signing with Cleveland as UDFA to compete for 3rd QB spot...he ran a lot of zone read in college. Dual-threat quarterback."
FB Garrett Hoskins - Eastern Michigan - 6-2, 254 lbs. (Source) Listed as a tight end in college, it looks like he could translate to a fullback in the NFL. He must have some ability to catch, though, because he caught 38 passes for 537 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2012.
RB Jamaine Cooke - Youngstown State - 5-9, 205 lbs. (Source) When the Browns held a workout with 14 local players on April 12, Cooke was one of the players who participated. He grew up in Midpark, so he is a local kid.
WR Perez Ashford - Northern Illinois - 5-10, 188 lbs. (Source) Ashford grew up in Shaker Heights and is one of the 14 local players who the team tried out. Football Outsides did a nice write-up on him being a guy who would go under-the-radar in the draft:

"I doubt he’s drafted, but his skills are more promising than half the receivers who will get picked. This highlight tape demonstrates a lot about Ashford’s game: Good footwork off the line, fast breaks on his routes, works back to the ball while maintaining route depth, and ability to give that little extra to say inside the boundary and gain extra yards."
WR Dominique Croom - Central Arkansas - 6-1, 189 lbs. (Source) Gil Brandt of NFL.com had this assessment of Croom back at his Pro Day: "Croom ran the 40 in 4.55 and 4.52 seconds. He had a 38 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-3 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.28 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.87 seconds. He also performed nine lifts on the bench press. Croom has big, size-10 hands."
WR Cordell Roberson - Stephen F. Austin - 6-4, 204 lbs. (Source) At the end of March, NFL.com's Gil Brandt said that Browns wide receivers coach Scott Turner attended Roberson's Pro Day. Brandt said, "Roberson — who is Stephen F. Austin’s all-time leading receiver — had a very good workout, and he’s a likely rookie free-agent pickup."
WR Michael Edwards - UTEP - 5-11, 200 lbs. (Source) Edwards had 51 catches for 820 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2012.
WR Keenan Davis - Iowa - 6-2, 218 lbs. (Source) Davis had 47 catches for 571 yards and 1 touchdown in 2012. NFL.com says he "presents an NFL build with good height and overall strength" but "possesses only average straight-line speed and hands."
OT Aaron Adams - Eastern Kentucky - 6-5, 305 lbs. (Source) Draft Insider said he was a two-year starter at right tackle. Their analysis says, "Adams was a consistent college lineman who showed big improvement the past two seasons. He plays smart football and offers potential as an inexpensive backup for several offensive line positions."
OT Chris Faulk - LSU - 6-6, 331 lbs. (Source) Sobo says, "If he was fully healthy this year, he is probably a mid-round pick. Entered draft a year early." (Inside gag: mooncamping had him ranked No. 17 overall on his big board, so maybe he's on to something after all!)
OT Martin Wallace - Temple - 6-6, 306 lbs. (Source) Wallace started 11 games at right tackle in 2012. Here is an article that talks about Wallace's background and personality.
OG Caylin Hauptmann - FIU - 6-3, 298 lbs. (Source) NFL.com's scouting profile of him says, "Hauptmann isn’t as tall as most scouts prefer in an offensive tackle prospect, but the strength and agility he’s shown as a blind-side starter for the Panthers gives him a chance to make it at the next level."
C Braxston Cave - Notre Dame - 6-3, 303 lbs. (Source) Bang. Cave was projected by CBS Sports to be a 5th- or 6th-round pick, and was deemed as the 5th-best center in the draft. He projects as a backup, though, per the review: "[Cave is] tough and strong at the POA, but not as effective in space and isn’t the most graceful mover, ending up on the ground too much…solid in just about every area, but leaves you wanting more, especially with his demeanor…has position versatility at OC or OG, but will struggle to ever win a starting NFL job."
TE Travis Tannahill - Kansas State - 6-3, 245 lbs. (Source) Playing with QB Collin Klein, Tannahill caught 23 passes for 284 yards and 1 touchdown in 2012. This article gives Tannahill very high praise, saying that he was asked to block in sophisticated schemes at Kansas State, but is capable of catching the ball very well.

Per the article, "That’s where Tannahill becomes a complete player, known more for his blocking skills than his pass-catching ability. Put the two together and you have the 2012 All-Big 12 tight end."
DT David Kruger - Utah - 6-5, 300 lbs. (Source) Let the brothers unite! David is the brother of outside linebacker Paul Kruger, who was the Browns' big free agent signing this offseason. David had 30 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and 1 fumble recovery in 2012. Another brother, Joe Kruger, was taken by the Eagles in the seventh round.

Per Desert News, "Kruger played as a defensive tackle, and his younger brother Joe played as a defensive end. Among his most memorable games in 2012 was the rivalry game vs. BYU. In that game, Kruger tallied five tackles and assisted on a sack, his only of the year.
DE Paipai Falemalu - Hawaii - (Source) Falemalu had 56 tackles, 5 sacks, and 2 fumble recoveries in 2012. He was born in Honolulu, so I wonder if our Mike Krupka can give us anything on him?
DE Justin Staples - Illinois - 6-3, 242 lbs. (Source) Staples is another local product, having grown up in Lakewood, OH and went to St. Edward. He had 20 tackles and 0.5 sack in 2012.
ILB Mike Niam - Wofford - 6-2, 230 lbs. (Source) Although he didn't attend the Browns' local workout of 14 players, he is a local player, having grown up in Hudson. Niam was one of the players to do a regional combine, which is where he may have gotten recognized. He finished with 49 tackles and one sack in 2012 "despite facing double- and triple-teams." Here is another interview with him.
CB Josh Aubrey - Stephan F Austin - 5-11, 199 lbs. (Source) I have never heard of Stephan F Austin, but the Browns picked up two players from there. NFL Draft Zone calls Aubrey a "very aggressive and physical corner," and when asked to compare himself to an NFL player, Aubrey responded, "Darrelle Revis, because he is a physical corner who plays a lot of man coverage." Well, he's certainly ambitious. He also said if he could meet one person, dead or alive, it would be Ray Lewis.
SS Ricky Tunstall - Deleware - 5-11, 196 lbs. (Source) He had 60 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions (2 of which were returned for touchdowns) in 2012. I couldn't really find much else on him.
SS Ryan McWethy - Wisconsin-Platteville - 6-2, 226 lbs. (Source) McWethy registered 84 tackles and 2 interceptions in 2012. He isn't a very well-known player, but reportedly had a good workout at his Pro Day: "The former UW-Platteville defensive back turned in an impressive performance amid a host of Badgers. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds and graded out strong in other areas." He also had 31 bench press reps of 225 lbs, which would have placed first among safeties at the NFL Combine, per a report.
SS Kenronte Walker - Missouri - 6-0, 208 lbs. (Source) Walker had 68 tackles and 1 interception in 2012.

Geno Smith has fired his agent. Most "experts" speculate that it was because of Smith's "poor draft experience".

I usually like Dilfer but he made himself sound stupid with this analysis.

I was watching him live on ESPN when he went on this rant. He sounded kind of maniacal. I mean, would you not, as an OC or player, want to put up big numbers? His tirade was kind of pointless. :dunno:

I was reading that quite a bit of players fire agents after the draft. It's not something we hear about but this doesn't necessarily make Geno a bad guy. But since he pouted after not getting drafted in round one it does make him look bad.

The other truth is NFL teams sour on guys who pass on the Senior Bowl. They seem them as scared of competition and it bothers them, just like it bothers them when guys won't perform at the combine. Sometimes you are good enough to get away with it (ie guaranteed Top 5 pick) but when you are in a tight race for QB #1 you need to sell yourself and he took the day off. EJ Manuel went to the Senior Bowl and won over teams with his personality and play.

Exactly why I said what I said in the offseason thread. It's never your fault now, it's never going to be your fault on the field either....

No doubt Smith fired his agent. But damn he fell so far in the draft . It's sad he got landed on the Jets, that sorry ass of a team. Poor Sanchez is gonna lose his job so quick if Smith throw good and accurate then watch out.

While the Jets are a sorry ass team, it's not so sad that he landed on the Jets, if it means he might get the chance to put in time in games and possibly start sooner. He ends up on a team with an already established QB, where he'd be either a full-time backup or groomed to take over years down the road, he'd just be riding the bench of god knows how long. At least on the Jets they have some good players, they just need a good QB most of all, and it's only a matter of time before Buttfumble ends up getting yanked.

That's the thing with Geno though. He needs to sit a couple years like Rodgers to truly succeed. He's not ready now.
