I wasn't really impressed personally. Killzone looks amazing, but what else was there? Diablo 3? Played it on PC. Destiny will be absolutely amazing, but it'll be available on other systems. The little I saw of the interface looked nice, so that's a plus. It just seemed really bare bones to me.

BUT, I don't think Microsoft fans should be bashing anyone. I love my 360, but if the past 3 or 4 years is any indication, the next Xbox reveal will be centered around the casuals. I'm only buying one launch console, so unless Microsoft absolutely shocks me, Sony's going to get the initial nod it appears.

Oh yeah, that looks amazing as well, but I'm positive it'll be available on the next Xbox as well. I expected more exclusive games. I'll admit I'm a little butt hurt they didn't show a SOCOM title, but oh well. I thought they should have focused more on titles that will ONLY be available on their system.

But like I said, I don't think there's any way Microsoft tops it. I had to laugh at Major Nelson's comment on Twitter about them not revealing a price or showing the hardware. Microsoft is so invested with the casual market that they've become delusional.

Video game insights and research firm Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) has weighed in on this morning's PlayStation 4 reveal.

EEDAR's vice president of insights Jesse Divnich said the industry has been starved of new technology and new properties for so long that Sony's timing in announcing its next-gen console was "perfect".

"We're excited and anxious," Divnich said.

"Judging by today’s presentation, Sony is putting a strong focus on game content and connectivity, which is the lifeblood of any platform, and we are ecstatic that an entirely new generation of content is right around the corner. Today's announcement is a silver lining in what has been a somber year in the news for console gaming."

Divnich also weighed in on Sony's decision to announce their next-gen console ahead of competitor Microsoft, saying that while there are pros and cons to being first on the market, the current climate shows there was a definite need for innovation. With console sales stagnating and consumer interest in high-definition gaming waning, Divnich said Sony made the right decision to announce the PS4 now.

"Sony's best chance at changing momentum is being first to market. We can't stress enough to our third-party publishers [that] if you take a wait-and-see approach to the next-generation of HD platforms you will be left behind."

On the new DualShock 4 controller, Divnich expressed some concern that it could become a gimmick. However, he stated that if developers could find a way to use the controller to give players an edge in certain games (quicker grenade tosses, camera angle movements, inventory access, etc.), the controller could become a deciding factor in consumers purchasing a PS4 version of a game over another platform.

However, Divnich praised the PS4's pause/resume feature, saying it will become one of the most "heavily utilized features" on the new platform.

Finally, Divnich said he was not surprised that Sony did not announce pricing for the PS4 just yet.

"For competitive reasons, I am not surprised that pricing was not discussed," he said. "I think Sony learned a valuable lesson with the launch of the PlayStation 3 and I wouldn't expect the same mistakes to be made next generation. We wouldn't expect pricing announcements until closer to launch."

I don't see the controller as a gimmick, but more of a ease of use similar to the Vita when you toss a grenade in Call of Duty (for example).

I didn't watch the conference because the streaming was shitty as hell and lagging constantly. But sounds interesting from reading the last 9 pages. I'll have to go watch the videos of the conference later on, get the full details. Still no way in hell I'm buying a new console before 2015, but when I do jump to next gen, depending on how things actually are with the PS4 after it is released, I might have to give some serious consideration for a change to actually buying a PS4 along with a 720. Then it'd just be deciding what system would get what game purchases, because no way in fuck am I pissing away hundreds (and thousands) of dollars for two copies of the same damn game.

IGN:

Sony spent a lot of time at its Future of Playstation conference explaining in detail how Playstation Vita owners will be able to utilize their handheld as another option for experiencing Playstation 4 games.

On stage, other platforms like Apple's iPhone and iPad and Android handsets were only mentioned in passing. But in Sony Computer Entertainment's official press release more details were provided on what iOS and Android users have in store for them:

"A new application from SCE called 'PlayStation App' will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android- based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

The news sounds very similar to Microsoft's SmartGlass initiative, announced at E3 2012.

Specific examples and availability details are not yet available. Sony will presumably have more to say about the second screen functionality in key PS4 titles as the console approaches its late 2013 launch.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be powered by a custom 8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and "next-generation" AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84 teraflops. As detailed at the event, it will come paired with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused PCs on the market. As expected, the system will ship with a Blu-ray drive, built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI, Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague "AUX" port. Each system will ship a "Mono Headset" for cross-game chat and other social features.

What's more, we've gained new insight into the DualShock 4. As we know, the controller sports an integrated touch pad, headset jack, share button, and LED player identifier, but we've now learned that the touch pad features a mechanical button and supports "capacitive type." In addition to the obvious size and ergonomic changes, the DualShock 4 is expectedly gaining a bit of weight, going from 6.77 ounces on the DualShock 3 to 7.4 ounces on the DualShock 4. In addition to helping track a player for motion-based controls, the built-in LED can also be used to represent in-game elements, like a player's overall health.

Details were remarkably scant at the event regarding the PlayStation 4 Eye, which has been revealed as having a 1280x800 pixel sensor capable of capturing video at 60 frames-per-second — a significant gain over the Kinect's 640x480 30fps sensor. It can also be used to automatically detect players, though Sony hasn't detailed the exact application of the feature.

From the IGN article:

Well what is to stop a gaming company (EA) from suing in Sony in court for allowing others access to its games w/o purchasing it 1st? Now the MPAA might very well do that but I don't see it as any different (legally) from people using a technology such as Skype/video conferencing to do the same thing. Now will Sony market it as such? No but it would be interesting to see and why would Sony stop people from doing that to its OWN pictures.

Well what is to stop a gaming company (EA) from suing in Sony in court for allowing others access to its games w/o purchasing it 1st?I'm expecting that the feature is going to be an opt-in and not every game will be required to support it. Also, I imagine the answer to that question is along the same lines as "what's to stop a gaming company from suing Hauppauge for allowing others to share footage from its games w/o purchasing it?"

I'd also contend, personally, that sharing the video from a game is not the same as experiencing or playing a game. Sharing audio or video from a MP3 or video is the entirety of the experience.

Now the MPAA might very well do that but I don't see it as any different (legally) from people using a technology such as Skype/video conferencing to do the same thing.I'm pretty sure the MPAA would argue that's illegal. It's just not widespread enough to warrant going after.

Now will Sony market it as such? No but it would be interesting to see and why would Sony stop people from doing that to its OWN pictures. And there's the rub. If it's marketed, it would be tied up in court. Maybe not if it slips past.

Sony Pictures is also not SCE. I would imagine even those two would struggle to see eye to eye on that.

Interesting that Epic Games isn't on that list. I kind of thought something was up once a bunch of high profile developers started leaving Epic Games, but I wonder if Microsoft is in the process of buying them out. It would be smart, a lot of PS3 games are made using the Unreal Engine, and that would solidify Gears as a permanent 360 exclusive. Interesting.

More on the new camera (http://kotaku.com/5985804/first-look-at-the-playstation-4s-new-camera-[updated]?tag=playstation):

To go with the new PS4 controller, Sony also made brief mention tonight of a new camera that will also be released with the system. A revamped and improved version of Sony's camera tech, it'll serve as both a regular camera (for video purposes) while also tracking the movement of the new PS4 pad via its "light bar".

The big feature is the new "Share" button, which, Sony says, will allow gamers to capture and broadcast their gameplay in real-time to their friends through services such as uStream. "Share" also will allow gamers to upload their video performances to Facebook.

The PlayStation Eye camera also is getting an upgrade with the PS4. The "PlayStation 4 Eye" "incorporates two high-sensitive cameras that have wide-angle lenses with 85-degree diagonal angle views," according to a Sony news release. The augmented camera "enables PlayStation 4 Eye to cut out the image of player from background, or to grasp players position in front and behind,' says Sony. "In addition, users will be able to login to their PS4 with face recognition and are capable of using their own body movements or voices to enjoy games more intuitively."

The New PlayStation Eye will be able to detect the color on the DualShock 4 Light Bar "to judge the positions of multiple players, and set characters in the same positions or let a character talk to a particular player, enabling players to enjoy games in new way."

Additionally, the "DualShock 4" will feature a built-in speaker and headphone jack, offering stereo sound alongside multiplayer chat.

Why no PS4 at the PS4 reveal? (http://kotaku.com/5985824/why-didnt-we-see-the-actual-playstation-4-tonight-sonys-boss-explains?tag=playstation)

Well, that was weird. We got a console reveal without Sony actually revealing the console. It's left a lot of people confused, maybe even concerned, so given the chance we had to ask: where was the PS4?

"Why do you care?" jokes Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios.

Pressed as to what we should be reading into when we get a console reveal without the reveal of the console itself, Yoshida tells Kotaku "It was almost the other way around. When we planned for this event, obviously we discussed what we should show and talk about."

"As far as the DualShock 4 is concerned we wanted to do the live demo. And we were like, yeah, we have to show the controller, because it's awkward not to show the controller when someone is doing a demo. And also the feature that the DualShock 4 has, the share button, is a very key idea behind the design of the PS4... We really wanted to explain what we've done with the DualShock 4, but as far as the system itself we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you'd get bored."

I would guess the final design is not set in stone. Some speculate Sony may be hiding the fact there is no optical drive, but I doubt that is the case.

Amazon PS4 pre-order for Watch Dogs current price = $99.99

I'm guessing for now that's just a placement price for the time being and it'll be updated later, but that does raise the question, will we see an increase in prices for new games with the next-gen consoles? We saw games go up to $60 with the current gen, an increase in prices with the PS4/720 certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that PlayStation 4 will not block the use of second-hand games, contrary to various reports, speculation and even a Sony patent unearthed last month.

I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.

"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.

No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.

Do you agree, I asked?

"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation."

So if someone buys a PlayStation 4 game, I asked, you're not going to stop them reselling it?

"Aaaah," was Yoshida's initial answer, but seemingly only because he'd forgotten his line. "So what was our official answer to our internal question?" he asked his Japanese PR advisor. The advisor stepped in but didn't seem to answer clearly, at least to my ears. Yoshida then took control again firmly:

"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

I said I thought that was fine.

Interestingly, I also spoke to a Sony source elsewhere at the event this evening who told me that the anti used-game patent discovered last month was actually nothing to do with PlayStation 4 at all.

The patent suggested that discs would come branded with a contactless tag that could be recognised and read by your console, which would then bind it to you and prevent you from selling it on.

But whatever reason Sony did have for patenting it, it sounds like it wasn't for its next-generation console. Hopefully Microsoft will also avoid this ludicrous technology with its next-generation Xbox as well.

Better news - though I didn't watch any if this shit, I don't have to worry about buying this thing until FIFA 15 releases in September of 2014.

Either way, I'm a PlayStation guy and I'll buy the motherfucker at some point. PS4, here we go.

Following up on IOUs post, here is the full Eurogamer interview with Yoshida. (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-21-the-big-interview-sonys-shuhei-yoshida-on-ps4)

- Being 'always connected online' is not required, but recommended.
- Goal is to have firmware download in background so users do not have to wait to play. (Similar to PS+ autodownloads.)

More 'highlights' below:

Eurogamer: Does the console always need to be connected to the internet?

Shuhei Yoshida: You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected. The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita.

Eurogamer: Are all of those things optional? For people who have broadband data limits, for example? They can customise everything?

Shuhei Yoshida: Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.

Eurogamer: Which things will definitely be there day-one and which things might take a little longer?

Shuhei Yoshida: Some of the things Dave [Perry] talked about, like cloud gaming, he talked more about visions like "Everything Everywhere", which is the ultimate goal, but we have to start from somewhere.

Eurogamer: So the Gaikai trials on the store and background downloading based on algorithms that compute what you want and what you're doing - those things will definitely be there from day one?

Shuhei Yoshida: Well, we are still in development so we need to wait for the final system to be able to talk about it.

Eurogamer: When will you know the answer? Will you know it at E3?

Shuhei Yoshida I hope so! I hope by E3 most of the things are already in final form.

Eurogamer: Will you have to announce the date, price and launch games at E3?

Shuhei Yoshida Yep, that's possible. We don't decide these things until much closer, so we have no plan or no date set for announcing these things.

Eurogamer: Yes, I imagine he's very busy at this point... Are you going to change the way that you do PSN so there's a subscription multiplayer service like Xbox Live? Because that's the rumour today.

Shuhei Yoshida: We are still working on service plans or features so we are not ready to talk about that yet.

Eurogamer: On that note, you didn't compete that much for third-party exclusive games last time, but Microsoft definitely went after third-party exclusive DLC. Will you pursue that more aggressively this time?

Shuhei Yoshida: I'm not directly managing third-party relations, but it's my understanding that it was too expensive already in PS3 days to ask for exclusive titles, so what we could ask for reasonably from third-party publishers is to create either something [in] content or some features that are exclusive to our platform, and if our system had something very unique it's easier to ask for, but if it's not much different then it's harder to ask for.

Eurogamer: But it does seem like Microsoft really is asking, regardless of whether they're doing anything different. They're still going to Rockstar and Call of Duty and saying, help us out, give us 30 days of exclusivity or a year, and it seems perceptually - maybe not at a business level, I don't know - but perceptually as though it's given them an edge.

Shuhei Yoshida: So I don't know how the third-party relations guys are talking internally, but how I look at it is that I know these guys are really hard-working to visit developers and ask what it is they want us to do for them. I think we are a very much developer-focused company now compared to past efforts, and I hope it can have a lasting effect in developers, especially the independent and small developers. These people are less business-driven. They want to make games they want to make and sometimes they choose partners based on how they feel and the chemistry, so I think our guys are very focused to reach out and talk to these people.

Eurogamer: [At this point I'm hassled to wrap things up, so I asked for one more question.] Recently a lot of small or medium sized developers have moved away from home consoles to Steam or iOS or Android. What are you doing to bring them back? Is the self-publishing thing an example of that?

Shuhei Yoshida: Yes, that's a big part - a digital platform. There are many things we can do better to make it much more developer-friendly, instead of publishing on PlayStation Network, so it's more our focus - how we can make it easier for small developers to work with us to bring the content to PlayStation 4.

Eurogamer: Have you defined how the self-publishing process will work? Do you need a developer kit to develop for PS4 if it's based on PC architecture?

Shuhei Yoshida: So we are doing something like that with PlayStation Mobile and it's purely software development.

Eurogamer: So it will be possible to develop for PS4 even if you don't have a developer kit as well?

Shuhei Yoshida: Aaah, so we have to see... It depends on how we define the layer. The way we are approaching PS4 now is allowing developers to go really deep onto the metal, so Richard [Leadbetter of Digital Foundry] will know how that availability to the deeper hardware makes the console games way better than some PC or mobile approach. But if we do that, it will definitely require hardware to develop games.

Just got bits and pieces of it this morning

At this point from the information I know now take the money now!!! I want it

Think I'm going the Amazon route as well, no way I can see camping outside or waiting in line. Based on last release of the PS3, fights, robberies and assaults would ensue.

Watched the press conference yesterday, and I came away super impressed actually. I went from playing PS2 pretty much exclusively, to playing the Xbox 360 almost exclusively with these generation of consoles, so I was interested in what I was going to see. Quite honestly, Microsoft was its' work cut out for it. Sony definitely has learned from its' last gen mistakes, so no doubt in my mind that party chats will be in for the PS4. It looks easy to develop for, the 8 GB of unified memory is great, and I love the Nintendo DS "Sleep" function being integrated into the PS4. Instead of game developers integrating in-game saves, PS4 will do that for us. Also, I love the streaming capability as well. I have to believe that there will be a way to make it private, and password/invite only so you can control who sees your stream when you play. It's great for Madden, NCAA, FIFA etc. because now I don't have to necessarily buy a elgato, even though they will still be in demand. I like that DualShock4 will be a heavier controller with better triggers, it was my only gripe with the controller versus the 360 version. I'll be especially glued to E3 this year, that's when the system should be revealed along with prices and other special features.

Small roundtable this morning with Yoshida. Courtesy GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/features/playstation-meeting-2013-ps4-announcement-6403818/?tag=Topslot;Playstation4AnnouncementRecap;Playsta tion4Announcemen):

- Will PS4 allow used games, a reporter asks? Yoshida says that when you purchase a disc-based games on PS4, that "should work" on any hardware.

- Why was the hardware not on show last night? Yoshida says he is sorry for not showing the hardware last night and notes that the final hardware is not finalized.

- Asked about pricing, Yoshida says Sony is eyeing an "affordable price" for the system.

- Asked about PS3 investment continuing in the wake of PS4 announcement. He says Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls are two big titles, but no further titles for PS3 have been announced.

- Yoshida shoots down speculation that Beyond: Two Souls is coming to PS4. "It's not," he says.

- Talking about simultaneous development for PS3 and PS4, Yoshida says Sony has not done this outside of sports titles.

- Will Gaikai support be available at launch? Yoshida says every PS4 title will be available to play through Remote Play on PS Vita. At least that's the ambition. "I would be heart-broken" if all PS4 games don't play on PS Vita at launch.

- Regarding activation codes for used games, Yoshida said "we are not talking about that."

- Will PSN remain free? Yoshida says it's not already free, pointing to PS Plus. He says Sony wants to provide more services, functionality, and content through PSN, but won't say if this will cost an extra fee. "We are not ready to talk about that yet."

- Is this the last of the PS4 we see before E3? Yoshida says "I hope not," looking at PR person.

- Will PS Vita get a price cut in the West? Yoshida says the price cut is not coming to other regions.

- Is region-locking going to be a feature of PS4? Yoshida says he knows the answer, but will not talk about it just yet.

- PS4 does not support DualShock 3, he says. But your Move controllers will still work.

- What about that new PlayStation Eye camera we saw last night? Yoshida says "we are not yet ready to talk about what's in the box."

- The name of the new Eye device is PlayStation 4 Eye. It has two cameras, which can be used in different ways. One of which is triangulation. Face-tracking will be much more robust, he says. The other use of the PS4 Eye's two-camera approach will help with augmented reality games, like Wonderbook.

- Is Last of Us going to see a release on PS4? Yoshida says Sony is interested in releasing the game on two platforms, but no decisions have been made. In general, this is not Sony's focus, Yoshida explains

- Does PlayStation 4 support 4K? The PS4 supports 4K output, Yoshida says, but games do not.

- Asked about the strategy of having Gran Turismo and Drive Club in a time when racing games may be fading, Yoshida says both games can exist. Yoshida name-checks Gran Turismo 6. Asked about the similarities between Gran Turismo and Drive Club, Yoshida says Sony is not ready to talk specifics about the two games.

- What's going on with 3D? Will it be emphasized on the PS4? Yoshida says it is not a focus for the PS4, though it still will support the technology.

- Now talking about the PS4 hard drive, Yoshida said it is Sony's "dream" that gamers will fill up their hard drives, though he won't comment on whether or not interchangeable storage will be available.

- Talking now about technological advancements for the PS4, Yoshida explains graphical fidelity is important, but other experiences--like social--are as well. Yoshida says the PS4 will embrace free-to-play, social, and other new types of games.

My take on game prices. First off, I can't believe people were making stories out of Amazon's placeholders :fp:, second, the development costs and ease of developing is going to be easier. Graphically, it's not a gigantic leap, it just can process a hell of a lot more; hence, I think games are going to stay at $60, maybe even more releases levitating back to $50.

Let's remember brand new NES games back in the day were $50 and $60. I honestly think that price point is going to stick throughout time.

This view of the controller makes me think I won't have to purchase trigger add-ons, or at least it will be better than it was on the DS3. If the same company makes trigger add-ons for the DS4, I'll still buy them because of how happy I was with them.

The DualShock 4's new light bar contains three color LEDs and corresponds with the PlayStation Move motion capture interface. The LED array can change colors to match the color of a character in a video game, or alert a player to an important situation -- for example, a flashing pattern when you near death.

This will be cool for RPG's where it'll change color or flash when an enemy engages you.

Or say the playclock is running down in a football game.

When you're low on ammo.

Yeah lots of possibilities but the ? is will developers (EA) take advantage of them or screw the pooch. I already mentioned EA using PS4's tablet/smart phone PSN app to allow for a live box score for all sports games while you are playing.
