View Full Version : Removal of Annoying Popups?

Well apparently I got some sort of virus/adaware/malware from watching the Rumble stream the other day b/c now I'm getting annoying popup ads when I surf the net. Any recommendations? I've already tried AVG; Avast and Adaware. They have found a few things but no matter what I do the popups remain. :smh:

 seriously i don't have much that couldn't easily be downloaded again so i am considering wiping the whole damn cpu clean to the bones and then re-download the few things i actually use.

I have done that a couple of times myself. I've found it to just be easier.

Download this (http://www.spybotupdates.biz/files/spybotsd162.exe) and install and update it. Run the protection thing (or whatever it calls it - don't remember right off hand) and then run the main program. It'll get rid of any spyware/malware that's left on your PC.

After that, install the AdBlock extension in Chrome and stop using any other web browser. There is literally no reason to use any other web browser and it's the fastest and safest to use (with AdBlock installed).

I'll give it a try but oddly I messed around with Firefox a bit and no popups. I though hmmmm tried to uninstall Chrome (so i could donwload/install it again) and it will not let me saying i need to close all windows but none of them are open.

Definitely run Spybot first. It'll get rid of all that bullshit. After you run it and it's done, restart your computer. From there, you should be fine to install the AdBlock extension and be good to go from there on.

If you still have issues, it's a virus and not just normal stuff. From there, you'll need to get the free AVG stuff (not the free trial shit) and see if it can get rid of it.

Of course, most likely, it's not a virus, but just some stupid adware.

You can also try Malware Bytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/)... though most viruses prevent you from installing the really good protection programs.

So far.... so good... Spybot appears to have resolved the issue. Knocks on wood and crosses fingers. Thanks!

lol no. I'm 99% sure I got it from watching the Royal Rumble stream (I think I accidentally clicked on something that started a download on my cpu) . I also think it was somehow "connected" itself to Chrome b/c it wouldn't let me uninstall Chrome and it only happened with Chrome. I figured out a way to "manually" uninstall Chrome by modifying my Windows registry. I re-downloaded Chrome so we will see how it goes.

Nope. It's the same 2 damn ads for some BS computer games too. :smh: well my task manager shows 14 chrome.exe files running on the process tab even though i don't have chrome open.

Kill all the chrome processes (then double check they're killed), then, with another browser, download the malware bytes program I linked earlier. Run it on full scan and see what it gives you.

Also, make sure you don't have anything in the control panel programs list that you don't recognize... I notice all the time my mom will have all kinds of adware programs just simply installed and easily uninstalled.

Ctrl-alt-del, task manager, processes tab. Right click and end task on all chrome processes.

So... I've downloaded a TON of these programs and other than tracking cookies nothing is showing up but the pop up ads remain in Chrome and Chrome only. I installed the ad blocker extension Mors suggested and ABP extension as it was getting good reviews. It has since popped up once and I used ABP to supposedly block it so hopefully I'm good now if not I guess I'll either remove everything and start from ground zero or just use Firefox.

Going to imagine you've already tried this ... but just in-case, try uninstalling Chrome, and then running CCleaner (http://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/3000-18512_4-10315544.html)to make sure there's nothing Chrome related remaining.

Tried it same thing. It's not nearly as bad as it was but its still there and still annoying. If I could find the makers of that stupid game I'd go all Saw on them...

The #1 option is to use MalwareBytes. That fixed my last big problem.

I just removed a bunch of stuff most of which looked legit but I never used (i.e. bloat software). The only thing "fishy" is I uninstalled AVG yet it still shows AVG in the programs and this thing called Yantoo Layers Runtime. I tried uninstalling it but I get a "Setup initialization error"

I removed Chrome but I didn't see any weird extensions. I am going to redownload MalwareBytes and Avast and try again.

O.K. so Chrome asked me if I wanted to basically sync my Chrome account when Avast reinstalled chrome and I chose No. Running the scans now but I haven't had any pop ups and I have no extensions other than Avast and Google Docs. In the past I had a weather extension a GMail checker a print button and some popup blockers.

Not sure if this has been said yet, but the key thing is once you remove something with MalwareBytes, restart the computer and run again. Keep doing that til the computer is completely clean.

ran scans on malwarebytes; spybot and avast and 0 results. no popus also so something must have been in my extensions on my old chrome (or in my settings somehow) or i got it with my removal of old programs i never used. now time to start a thread about what chrome extensions i should get.

not your fault and i'm not even sure that was what it is but the only thing i could think of about my cpu usage that was "out of the ordinary". i think i accidently hit the mouse buttons right when the cpu was going to a screen saver when it was over a link at that site and i noticed it caused something to pop up but i didn't really think much of it until the problems with chrome (which was the browser i was using at the time). next time watch the wresting stream from ie.

Best thing to do is get a torrent from a site while you have all your malwarebytes and antivirus protection on. Then put the video file on a flash drive, watch it on your TV through your PS3

Malwarebytes, spybot, cccleaner are all good but right now the best protection you can get is to install Microsoft Security Essentials.

It is free and it catches things that Malwarebytes does not. You also get real time protection for free, unlike others that you have to pay for.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download

As good as I find it to be I still have a similar problem when any version of Internet Explorer is installed. I have 4-5 iexplorer.exe running at all times and I am not running it, so I just had to disable it. No problems with Firefox which is why it is been my browser since Firefox came out.

Almost makes you want to see a duel of his characters. John Luther travels to Baltimore to take down Stringer Bell. I prefer the Luther character myself, much more depth to his character. Can't wait for season 3.

Stringer Bell has some serious depth as well, but yeah, Luther is amazing. I make a point to watch anything with Idris Elba in it (can't wait for Pacific Rim!). I can't wait for more Luther because of Ruth Wilson's character Alice and the insane relationship Alice and Luther have. It's amazing stuff.

It is amazing stuff but nobody knows if we will get to see her in Season 3. Even the video promoting season 3 questions states "Only Alice knows." They did have to write her out of season two due to her schedule. It also stinks that there will be just 4 episodes again. Interesting note, the creator is considering an Alice spinoff with her in the US with a possible appearance by Luther down the road. I think they are setting things up for something in the last episode, season 4 or the spinoff since season three is heavily promoting Luther's new love interest.
