The NCAA Football Cover Vote has reached the round of eight. Potential cover athletes from the final eight schools will be unveiled from January 23rd through February 3rd. Cover athlete-specific voting will begin on Monday, February 4th.

As expected, the final eight features traditional powers from the college football world. The final eight features: Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas A&M.

Continue on to read the full press release from EA SPORTS:

Today, EA SPORTS announced the eight finalists for the NCAA Football Cover Vote. Alabama carried over its momentum from last round, once again securing the most support and leading the way with more than 60,000 votes. Michigan and Texas A&M have closed the gap however, as voting went down to the final minutes to determine who would take the top spot. With more than 1.7 million votes cast so far across both the primary poll as well as the smaller secondary polls, college football fans have shown tremendous devotion to their favorite teams and that passion will only intensify as the stakes get higher with the final goal in sight.

Voting for the next round begins today on the NCAA Football Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/easportsncaafootball), in an effort to trim the eight schools to four. Vote totals have been reset, so fans can’t rest now as their teams edge closer to taking it all.

Below are the schools advancing into the round of eight:

Alabama
Texas A&M
Michigan
Ohio State
Oregon
Notre Dame
Georgia
Florida State

In the coming week EA SPORTS will begin announcing the athletes which will be representing their respective schools on Facebook. Fans should check back daily as the biggest names in college football are unveiled, all in the hopes of securing the cover for their alma mater. Athlete-specific voting will begin on Monday, February 4th and continue until Monday, February 18th, at which point the field will be cut to four.

Interesting that this year there aren't many (if any) superstars from the "traditional" EA cover athlete positions (QB, HB, WR). Using Kiper and McShay's 1.0 Mock Drafts the following are potential cover candidates (assuming EA doesn't do something different by putting a Coach/Coaches for a school on the cover)

:Alabama: - CB Dee Milliner; G Chance Warmack; T D.J. Fluker
:Texas_A&M: - DE Damontre Moore; T Luke Joeckel; T Jake Matthews
:Michigan: - T Eric Fisher; T Taylor Lewman
:Ohio_State: - DT Jonathan Hankins
:Oregon: - DE Dion Jordan
:Notre_Dame: - TE Tyler Eifert; MLB Manti Te'o
:Georgia: - LB Javaris Jones; LB Alec Ogletree; DT John Jenkins
:Florida_State: - DE Bjoern Werner; T Menelik Watson; CB Xavier Rhodes

That's a REALLY tough sell to the casual crowd. The only names that really stick out to me as being potentially marketing friendly are Javaris Jones and Damontre Moore.

Out of those eight, only Alabama and Texas A&M would be the only two I wouldn't have a problem winning the cover vote. Anybody but Georgia of course. I would hate to see the bullpups on the cover.

If Michigan or Oregon win, I can pretty much guarantee you that Denard Robinson or Kenjon Barner will be on the cover. They don't usually rely on high draft stock players to put on the cover. Not many of the cover athletes have actually been highly successful in the NFL. They'll put whoever the best offensive or most widely known player is on the cover.

"Successful" might be true but "generally" to get on the cover you either need (1) Heisman and/or (2) be a high draft pick at one of the "skill" positions. In fact there are only THREE exceptions to this "general" rule and Tommy Frazier won a national championship the other 2 were from non BCS schools. Otherwise you either won a Heisman and/or were drafted in the 1st round of the NFL draft.

97 - Tommy Frazier - :Nebraska: - National Champion QB - Undrafted
98 - Danny Wuerffel - :Florida: - Heisman - 4th Round
99 - Charles Woodson - :Michigan: - Heisman - 4th Overall Pick
00 - Ricky Williams - :Texas: - Heisman - 5th Overall Pick
01 - Shaun Alexander - :Alabama: - 16th Overall Pick
02 - Chris Weinke - :Florida_State: - Heisman - 4th Round Pick
03 - Joey Harrington - :Oregon: - 3rd Overall Pick
04 - Carson Palmer - :USC: - Heisman - #1 Pick
05 - Larry Fitzgerald - :Pitt: - 3rd Overall Pick
06 - Desmond Howard - :Michigan: - Heisman - 4th Overall Pick
07 - Reggie Bush - :USC: - Heisman - 2nd Overall Pick
08 - Jared Zabransky - :Boise_State: - Undrafted

09 - Matt Ryan - :BC: - 3rd Overall Pick
09 - Darren McFadden - :Arkansas: - 4th Overall Pick
10 - Brian Johnson - :Utah: - Undrafted
10 - Michael Crabtree - :Texas_Tech: - 10th Overall Pick
11 - Tim Tebow - :Florida: - Heisman - 25th Overall Pick
12 - Mark Ingram - :Alabama: - Heisman - 28th Overall Pick
13 - RGIII - :Baylor: - Heisman - 2nd Overall Pick
13 - Barry Sanders - :Oklahoma_State: - Heisman - 3rd Overall Pick

If Alabama wins the cover, and they don't make any major improvements to the game this, I'd be very tempted to not buy NCAA this year, just as my own personal way of giving the middle finger to Alabama.

Yeah oddly, the "best" schools have the "worst" talent at the "skill" positions (at least EA cover eligible wise) thus the likely "shitty" cover this year.

By looking at that I am guessing it is
FSU- EJ Manuel(looks like a throwing motion)
ORE- Dion Jordan. I am not sure I want to say Kenjon Barner
T AM-Luke Joeckel. It is either him or Moore(DE)
ND- Eifert. Looks like someone catching a ball.

I would like to see D-Rob get it. Not a Bama hater, but I dont want to see them get the cover again(so soon). Out of the candidates they have, D-Rob is the most known out of the rest of the guys. He has the career rushing record for QBs and is a playmaker.

Outside of D-Rob and Lacey, none of the other candidates are really cover-worthy. They could have done better, but there really isnt that many cover-worthy players in this year's draft like in other years. At least with D-Rob, he has a recognizable name in the college world

Who gives a damn about the cover guy being a first round pick? Besides you.

EA should b/c the crap like that matters to the casual consumer. It's a much easier PR/sell to have a "star" on the cover over some BUM who wasn't even a decent college QB and has ZERO shot of being one in the future. I don't care who is on the cover (so long as my $ isn't going to EA so they can pay a Dog Killer, Rapist, Pedophile etc...). but if there is a vote on the cover athlete (there is) and we are discussing it here on a message board dedicated to this series (we are) I just thought it was interesting that the likely candidates wouldn't be 1st round picks. I noted previously there are only 3 current exceptions to either (1) you won the Heisman and/or (2) you were a 1st round pick in the draft with 20 different cover athletes on the "main" games since 97.

Take it for what its worth but IMHO its a DUMB move on EA's part b/c Denard isn't nearly as marketable as: Moore or Jones.

Escobar
01-31-2013, 01:45 AM
How much money do you want to bet that more casual college football fans (in turn people who are more likely to play NCAA) know who Denard Robinson is than know who Jarvis Jones or DaMontre Moore are. I wouldn't immediately know who Moore was if I didn't play with A&M in the Powerhouse OD, and I am an A&M fan. Von Miller was more widely known than Moore. Robinson would've had a better and more notable senior season if he didn't get hurt and forced to just run the ball the final few games. Robinson would be the perfect pick for EA as a cover athlete. He's someone that is a game changer and millions of people probably tried playing w/ Michigan just because he was the fastest qb in the game.

Back to the point about winning the Heisman, many Heisman winners were not successful in the NFL, and Tebow wouldn't have been drafted in the 1st round if it wasn't for Josh McDaniels smoking crack.

Kentucky is tough but IMHO they could have gone with Bear Bryant and pumped some sort of changes to the Coaching Carousel. Army/Navy actually have a pretty rich tradition in college football. Most the kids may not realize it but the academies were pretty big "powers" in college football early-mid last century. Army has 3 titles I believe and Navy has 1 as well. If Navy/Army won they could have sold "rivalry" with a joint cover with Army/Navy and perhaps some PR with a portion of the sales during the first week going to wounded warriors or some other military charity.

wow what is EA's philosophy this time avoid ALL of the 1st round talent from each team at all costs? 5 of the top 6 players in this draft (according to Kiper's big board) are from the schools above and only ONE of them is a potential cover athlete. Well if I had a facebook account my vote would be for Jones but I don't and seeing as Jones has virtually zero shot of moving on to the next round I don't think I'll sign up for one to participate.

Besides Swope, I got the last 3/4 right.

Like someone said, the only surefire 1st rd pick is Jarvis Jones. If I were to ask a casual fan about any of the players by only their name, the recognizable names might be Eddie Lacy and maybe Denard Robinson.

It seems like this is going to be the way how covers will be pick. If anything, they should allow fans to pick which players will be candidate.

I'd personally rather see Denard in. He's been more dynamic for longer.

With Lacy, you had Richardson before, Ingram before that, Yeldon after that, etc. etc. etc.

A&M will get their cover with Johnny Football in a couple years.

Wouldn't mind Barner, my top pick of the 8 would have been Jarvis Jones, but he's not going to get in.

Indeed but it's comments like that which are going to lead to: (1) the end of the series; OR (2) the NCAA starting to allow paying students $ and thus ending their amateur status.
