NCAA Cover Vote: Round One Update

While there have been some minor updates via Twitter, the first major update for the NCAA Football Cover Vote has been announced with the current standings for the Top 32. Round one voting will continue until January 7 with the final round one results to be announced at halftime of the BCS National Championship Game.

Other tweets on the EA SPORTS NCAA Football account disclosed for the first time that each school should have two Facebook polls (https://twitter.com/EANCAAFootball/status/285163250201542657) on the NCAA Facebook page in which fans can vote to increase their vote total. (It appears that the two polls are the main vote (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151284617067280&set=a.329807947279.149909.90440037279&type=1) and one additional poll, typically asking for who you prefer in a rivalry match-up or among several conferences foes.)

During TGT's analysis of poll results, we did not see the secondary poll questions for three schools: Ball State, Northern Illinois, and Southern Miss. We have asked EA for information regarding the status of the missing schools. We will update this article should we hear back from the company.

The vote total for each school appears to be the main poll (schools A-M, N-Z) plus one small poll. It is not nearly as complicated as EA has made it sound in early info/blogs.

So, because the Ohio State vs Michigan question has ~22,000 votes for Ohio State ... that 22,000 gets added to their 2,000 from the main poll, and they get 24,000? Whereas since Kentucky (who I didn't see a poll question for, but I'm sure it's there) probably has a lot less votes in their poll question, that's why their 11,000 main poll votes puts them wayyyyy behind OSU?

Honestly, that's crap.

That's exactly right. Here is the secondary UK Question - currently 2600 votes for the Wildcats (https://www.facebook.com/questions/10151293499407280/).

As noted in the main article, we cannot find secondary polls for Ball State, Northern Illinois, and Southern Miss so those schools (already with a very slim chance of cracking the Top 32) have no chance of advancing. We are hoping we are overlooking the question, but I'm afraid that's not the case.

Notre Dame wins first round of NCAA Football Cover Vote

Irish Finish with the Most Votes; Alabama, Oregon, Michigan and More Also Advance

Round 1 of the NCAA Football Cover Vote is now officially complete with 32 schools emerging from the chaos to move on to Round 2. With more than 600,000 total votes cast, Notre Dame took the opening round by storm, claiming the most votes overall and landing themselves a spot in the next round alongside BCS National Championship opponent Alabama.

Among the 32 qualifying schools, college football powerhouses such as Stanford, Oregon, LSU, and Texas A&M jumped out to large leads alongside Notre Dame. Schools such as Kentucky, Penn State, and West Virginia, which saw considerable support from their fan base, will also continue on to the next round. USC made a late charge over the weekend, jumping into the top 32.

Polls will open on Wednesday, January 9th for round two, and fans are encouraged to visit the NCAA Football Facebook page to vote for their favorite team.

Go figure, look at that. Notre Dame, TCU, Navy and BYU the ONLY teams that are not from a major conference to make it to the round of 32, Navy just barely skirting into the round of 32 in 30th place, which means they'll be eliminated in this next round of voting. Yep, I pretty much no longer give a shit about this voting crap.

Before the last couple years, if I would have heard that statement, I would have laughed. Not anymore though.

As for the cover, I just wish those of us who root for small schools could get a bone thrown to us. I just looked back at all the past covers, this is the breakdown:

97 - Nebraska
98 - Florida
99 - Michigan
00 - Texas
01 - Alabama
02 - Florida State
03 - Oregon
04 - USC
05 - Pittsburgh
06 - Michigan
07 - USC
08 - Boise State
09 - PS2 - California/PS3 - Boston College/PSP - West Virginia/Wii - Michigan State/360 - Arkansas
10 - PS2 - Texas/PS3 - Utah/PSP - USC/360 - Texas Tech
11 - Florida
12 - Alabama
13 - Baylor/Oklahoma State

Boise State is the only non-BCS conference school that has been allowed to grace the cover, and that was only (in my opinion) because they had just knocked off Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl that January, otherwise it probably would have been Florida again or something. Year after year, it's all the big schools. Alabama, Florida and Michigan have all been on it twice since 1998. Is it too much to ask for a small, non-BCS school to get a bone thrown to them and be given the cover for a year?

Yes. Because the cover isn't for the hardcore football fans that can actually name all 120+ mascots. Even when Boise beat Oklahoma, plenty of people, even on NCAA forums, had no clue who Jared Z was.
