Activision has announced a new game based on The Walking Dead. Not to be confused with Telltale’s episodic The Walking Dead adventure game, Activision’s version is a first-person action game based on AMC’s The Walking Dead TV show.

Developed by Terminal Reality, The Walking Dead will revolve around Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle on a “haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta.” Players will control Daryl as they attempt to avoid detection from zombies that hunt using sight, sound and smell and will choose between fighting them or using stealth to avoid detection. According to Activision, “No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside in this new, post-apocalyptic world.”

Supplies will be scarce and players will need to carefully manage food, ammunition and supplies as they make their way through the game. Daryl will encounter “a slew of other characters” along the way that can help or hurt him. Whether or not these characters accompany Daryl is completely up to the player and “represents just some of the major decisions that will constantly be made while fighting to survive.”

The Walking Dead will hit stores in 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Few other details are available, but check out the game’s official site for more info in the future. Until then, keep an eye out for all the latest announcements about The Walking Dead TV show before it returns to AMC for season three later this year.

The gameplay trailer for The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts published yesterday was in fact made by a fan and is not a genuine asset from Activision or developer Terminal Reality, though it does use actual in-game footage.

Activision community manager Dan Amrich explained on his blog that the video was created by a fan using footage from an IGN video preview of the game.

Amrich apologized for posting the video in the first place and for "being part of the misinformation and the constant problem of unreliable information found on the Internet."

The video, originally posted to a YouTube account that has since been deleted, caused a stir upon its release yesterday, with many gamers bemoaning its quality.

Survival Instincts was announced in July 2012 and is based on AMC's The Walking Dead TV series. It will be set in rural Georgia and focus on brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon. Players will be able to choose whether to confront the undead head-on or attempt to avoid detection.

Survival Instincts is currently in development at Terminal Reality. That studio's previous credits include Atari's Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as well as Majesco's BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2. The company's most recent release was Kinect Star Wars.

Survival Instincts is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

You aren't a fan of Max Headroom hair?

I never got the feeling - even from the dev interview - that the story will be very strong or deep, though that could change. I can understand some 'avoidance,' but there also has to be plenty of areas where you have no choice but to fight (or find ways to distract & fight) to feel like the show.

You have to think that the success of the Telltale's game is directly going to lead to the non-success that is most likely going to be this game. There are a million action zombie games out already (Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, DayZ, COD:BO2 Zombie bullshit, etc), why would I want to play this instead of one of those? This looks no different than any of those (and, as I said before, close to DayZ's graphic style). I most definitely won't be playing this game unless it gets mega hyped up by consumers after the fact.

Don't forget that we get State of Decay coming to XBLA and eventually PC. This game looks like a cash grab by Activision. I might get it because I love the show but I am looking forward to SOD and Dead Island Riptide for my Zombie action.

Amazon has dropped the price of the 360 version to $37.49; while the PS3 version stays at retail ($49.99). You can't find any sort of gameplay trailers or anything on YouTube. I just have a feeling this is going to be a turd. Half tempted to get it for $37.49, play it quick, because I'm sure the single player is shorter than the Telltale game :D, then sell it since it'll be a hot commodity while the season winds down.

Yeah the release is only a week away. Well according to Amazon. On IGN, it says the 26th.

I'm pretty sure it's the 19th. I was in GS a few weeks ago and one of the employees was laughing at them having the same release date as Gears.

The sad thing is that even if it does suck, it'll still sell simply because of the name on the cover. We might have another Terminator Salvation on our hands.

I picked this game up this morning as soon as game stop was open. So that means i have spent about 2.5 hours with it. I will say that i was a little surprised. To to a tv tie in it was much better then i thought. All the cries about the graphics are not wrong, but maybe thats why they knocked 10buck off its price. All the cries about the game play however are wrong, I find it very good.

Gun play is tight, and movement is on par with any other FPS with a little peeking around walls to make the sneaking a little better. Now the melee is not half bad you have a quick kill from behind a grapple if you get grabbed and a light/heavy attack. Different weapons will swing faster/slower but also push zombies back different distances. I would put the melee a cut about games like skyrim and fallout because of the grapple and quick kills.

Voice acting is nice also, but the NPC fall a little flat when compared to the voice of Daryle and his brother. Over all i would give it an 8 but this is from a huge walking dead fan, so if i step back and act like its just another game that might drop to a 7

Well we all saw it coming! Acitvision took a hot commodity and are just going off of pure fan love to make money off of this one. I'm a huge fan of the series but this game is fun but just not what we were really hoping for. They rushed this one and it does show in many ways. It's unfortunate because I want to really love it but it's so hard to truly love it.

The gameplay and sound are very forgettable to say the least. It is something new to pass my time until the fresh crop of great games hits up so I'm playing it in the meantime. I mean it is a zombie shoot em up so I'm going to play it and I'm going to force myself to enjoy it for the time being. If you can get it on sale now it's fun but you may just want to rent this one because the fun won't last too long.

It's no COD and its not supposed to be so don't even compare it. It's not a horrendous title but still fun and sure it could be better but it's really starting to grow on me. It's going to get negative reviews because its far from a masterpiece but take it or what it is and it's a lot of old school fun
