Yeah the whole album is just amazing. Rocket Skates is one of the best Deftones songs ever I think. I like Royal and Prince too. Diamond Eyes is my 2nd favorite on the album, kinda reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins on the chorus.

I get together every now and again with a few friends for what we call 'music night'. Basically we sit around and drink lots of beer and listen to vinyl. Without fail we end up having a discussion about which year in music is our favorite. The answer always ends up being 1994. So, today I was bored at work and did some research on all the music that came out in 94. I was amazed at the number of albums I consider great. The ones I bolded are in my top 20 albums of all time.

Green Day - Dookie
Soundgarden - Superunknown
NIN - The Downward Spiral
Weezer - Blue Album
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Korn - 1st Album
Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies
Meat Puppets - Too High to Die
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Cake - Motorcade of Generosity
Beck - Mellow Gold
Luna - Bewitched
Failure - Magnified
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
Hole - Live Through This
Rollins Band - Weight
Live - Throwing Copper
Blur - Parklife
Sonic Youth - Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
STP - Purple ('Still Remains' off this album is my favorite song of all time)
Rancid - Lets Go
L7 - Hungry for Stink
311 - Grassroots
Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Stoned and Dethroned
Dinosaur Jr - Without a Sound
Toadies - Rubberneck
Liz Phair - Whip SMart
Veruca Salt - American Thighs (...don't judge me :D)
Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming
REM - Monster
The Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot
Page and Plant - No Quarter
Portishead - Dummy
The Melvins - Stoner Witch
The Black Crowes - Amorica
Nirvana - Unplugged

The Ocean, yes (VERY cool ambient band) but never heard of the other.

After some listening, not really my kind of stuff (I know, it's weird but I'm crazy picky about this stuff...).

Also, going on top albums of all time:

NIN - The Downward Spiral (though I REALLY love The Fragile and Year Zero as well)
Opeth - Deliverance
Fiona Apple - The Tidal
The Gathering - If_Then_Else
Gojira - The Link
Daylight Dies - Lost To The Living

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Tool - Undertow
Zao - Liberate Te Ex Inferis

Hey Deuce, was reading the STP page on Wiki today...more to see the sales figures for the new album, but read that Scott wanted to axe Peacoat from the album, but the DeLeo's talked him out of it because of how money he was vocally on the song. DUDE that would have sucked to never hear Peacoat.

Duece,

Alright Man I pretty much listen to anything, its something about vinyl that makes me appreciate the music more, I can spend HOURS in the record store flipping through vinyl and before I know it I have spent $100 on $2.00 records.

I think my favorite vinyls that I own are Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, and Electric Ladyland and anything I have by Santana, I am starting to truly appreicate though some PInk Floyd albums , I have a Ray Charles Live Album that I play alot.

Bingo! I try to explain that to other people but they just don't get it. Its hard to explain. There's a 'warmth' that comes with vinyl that you just don't get with digital. Sitting around, drinking cold beers, and listening to vinyl is one of my favorite activities. :D

We have several "Half Priced Books" stores here in the DFW area and they sell older used vinyl. You can really find tons of gems in these stores. A lot of stuff you mention. I was never a Dire Straits fan but after listening to them on vinyl I was a changed man. If you don't have any Dire you should check them out. Their albums are made for vinyl. Another thing thats pretty cool about vinyl these days is that most bands put a coupon for a free download of the album in each record. So I can buy the record and still be able to put it on my Ipod.

...and not to mention a lot of vinyl goes up in value!

oweb26

Drinking cold beers doing anything other than work makes it my favorite activity at least at the moment it does.

I went to the used record shop today and bought about 6 new (old) Lp's mostly 70's soul albums a couple of Live albums, my wife got an ABBA album and I picked up about my 6th Bob Marley album...lol, spent a total of 10.00 god I love shopping for records, will probably do the same tomorrow going to a better store thats just farther away from my house and I didn't really feel like driving to it

LOL, I think I paid around 100.0 or really close to it for my turntable, but the pricing on a turntable is relative, if you are ONLY going to play those couple of albums your mom has then a cheap one might do you justice but if you are going to actually listen to alot of music then a higher price one might be in order. Me personally I wouldnt pay more than 150.0 for one, I have mine hooked up to my home theater surround sound (of course changing the audio type) and it sounds awesome.

No. I have listened to vinyl. Lots of it (my mom had a HUGE collection of them).

They are substandard because they sound absolutely no different than a CD or any other music ripped at 320kbps but are EXTREMELY fragile. The slightest scratch causes an entire song not play right and god forbid you get a vertical scratch.

I know Mors has been losing sleep over this but here is the science behind why vinyl sounds better than cd.

Why does it sound better?

Some people have a bit of an obsession with vinyl. Maybe it's just because they think it is vintage and therefore cool. Maybe they are just old school and not want to move on. Maybe they are complete audiophiles and love their music that much.

Most people understand that vinyl sounds better then CD's and other modern digital equivalents such as DVD, mp3 and other software based recordings. However, the actual reasons why it sounds better are not so widely known. At first glance it might seem a bit complicated but it is in fact quite simple.

It basically comes down to the difference between analog and digital signals. Analog, by definition, is a continuously variable signal. This means that changes in frequency are represented by a smooth wave. Basically, this means that a change in frequency between two values will occur by moving through the complete range in between them. The result accurately sounds out every tiny change.

Digital Encoding

In order to encode a similar signal onto digital media such as a CD or DVD, a conversion from analog to digital is required. No matter how good the conversion is, there will always be losses which occur through the transition. Technology may get better and better, reducing these losses but it is effectively impossible (at least in modern times), to reproduce an analog signal exactly with digital data. Imagine if you were told to sing from as low as you can up to as high you can using only three different tones. You would sing low, a medium note and then high. This is a very extreme example, but shows what we mean by discrete steps. Improved technology would allow you to change frequencies more often in the same period, say 5 times. Now you have a closer reproduction of the original smooth variant, but it still isn't great.

Given that the human ear works at a higher resolution than our current technology, a trained ear can easily hear the difference between an analog and even a high resolution digital signal. This is exactly the reason why so many people prefer vinyl records to their digital equivalents.. We haven't even got to the point of software level encoding. MP3's and other files incur yet another layer of losses which further reduces the quality in audio. Try listening to a vinyl record after an equivalent mp3 and if you can't tell the difference, there might be something wrong with you! Just kidding, but there is a very clear difference. There are certain audio formats such as FLAC, which are higher resolution digital encodings, but this is when compared with a CD track. In other words, it is still digital, and still does not replicate the sound in the same way as a live performance or a vinyl record.

Now you know why a vinyl record is that much better then any digital equivalent from a scientific front. I didn't even mention their inherited greatness just for being a vintage item!

Yes, but you forgot to mention that anything past 20,000 hertz is beyond the human ability to notice ANY difference at all in sound quality. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_range)

This statment is complete bullshit:
Given that the human ear works at a higher resolution than our current technology, a trained ear can easily hear the difference between an analog and even a high resolution digital signal.

You may THINK there is a difference, but it is simply your mind playing tricks on you. The only difference in the mastering of the medium. There are shitty sounding masters of vinyls just like there are shitty sounding masters of CDs. The output of CDs and vinyls both go beyond the 20khz of human hearing so unless you are superhuman, you probably can't even hear anything above 17 or 18 khz.

Sure, it's great that you have the nostalgia interest in them and all, but beyond that, it's really no different than getting the 320 kbps mp3 or even the FLAC format (which is ridiculous in and of itself) of a well mastered CD.

You crack me up...you'll argue with a rock. Its simple science. Any digital recording comes from an analog source. Therefore analog is better than digital. Its a fact. This isn't preference.

I don't care about you admitting that you are wrong or not. I started by simply stating that in my opinion, vinyl is a substandard medium to listen to music on. Then you had to get all high and mighty about proving me wrong (showing something that has no scientific merit as there is no source quoted for your above information) which you still haven't done because you refuse to acknowledge the fact that the human ear drum cannot process any form of sound beyond 20mhz thus making your argument moot. The 22.5 mhz (digital) and 24 mhz (analog) produced by the various mediums cannot possibly be determined in a wide enough breath of tests that there is not any scientific study showing in favor in one way or another that it's even possible to tell the difference between the two formats, much less enough to know that one is better than the other.

There's no freakin' way I'd pay $150 to play substandard forms of music. Jesus christ...

And then you call me high and mighty b/c you say vinyl is substandard and I prove you wrong? Dude, if you can't take someone proving you wrong maybe you should mind your own business.

Actually, I wasn't butting into any conversation. The jesus christ was about paying $150 for a record player, which is nuts btw, when you can get a perfectly good old one at most any garage sale/yard sale or find a fairly decent one on ebay for $20 or 30 dollars (plus retarded high shipping of course).

But I agree. Carry on. Neither of us shall be swayed (just like most all internet debates ;) ).

I will say, I'd love to hear some old jazz/blues music on a good record player. That would most definitely fit the style of music and would probably be quite an experience.

This is something we do agree on...that's the only way I like the blues/jazz. One of the first albums I bought was Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain". Gorgeous.

Yeah man was doing some digging and found that they released recordings last fall on the 5th anniversary of his death. But they sold out of physical copies....did some digging and found that on Amazon. I already had his first solo EP...some of the stuff on How Humans isn't produced the best, mainly because they were unreleased recordings.

Production is kinda crappy on How Humans R(x), but I doubt they did much producing on these unreleased tracks. For the most part it is right on par with his first solo album Inside, which was also great.

Now, after a computer analysis of three decades of hit songs, Dr. DeWall and other psychologists report finding what they were looking for: a statistically significant trend toward narcissism and hostility in popular music. As they hypothesized, the words “I” and “me” appear more frequently along with anger-related words, while there’s been a corresponding decline in “we” and “us” and the expression of positive emotions.

“Late adolescents and college students love themselves more today than ever before,” Dr. DeWall, a psychologist at the University of Kentucky, says. His study covered song lyrics from 1980 to 2007 and controlled for genre to prevent the results from being skewed by the growing popularity of, say, rap and hip-hop.

Pretty obvious if you ask me.Except that it hasn't been true for that long. There have been a lot of studies that have shown the current generation of college students (and the entry level generation in the work force) are the most self-centered we've ever been. This is just another angle at it. Normally, I'd agree with you about wasting money on fruitless studies, but I thought that was pretty interesting.

And there are much, much more meaningless studies out there.
