So they say the first key is to admit you have a problem....

I like putters, I collect putters. I've always had a soft spot for Ping putters as the first putter I every received was from my Grandfather, he bought me a Ping Anser BeCu when I was in H/S. I still have it and use it from time to time.

Since then I've had many Ping's and other brands but I really enjoy the BeCu feel of the older Ping putters.

Today I picked up an older used Ping Anser 4. I plan on using it and not selling it or worrying about the "collector's stigma" so I wanted to clean it up.

Here are the starting shots, I didn't get one of the old cracked ping-man grip or some of the rust spots on the shaft.

It's the middle putter shown in both images, he was selling all 3 but I was interested in the Anser 4.

I put a new blacked out ping-man grip on her and used some scotch guard pads on the shaft to remove the rust spots, then I've had the putter in Pepsi for about 2 hours, I've taken it out washed/wiped on it some, but it still needs to soak some more, it's coming out pretty clean and shiny. I understand the dark color will return in time but I'm glad to have removed the green spotting, if the green spotting was more uniform I wouldn't mind it but it was mainly directly above/around the white sight line.

Once it's done soaking and cleaned up I'll post the finished images......

I don't have a grinder or a buffing machine and I don't mind waiting for the soda to take effect, it's pretty cool to lift it out and see how clean it's getting.

Ok, here is the progress so far after 3 hours of soaking, I'm pretty happy so far, it looks pretty clean for a "old putter".

The other cool thing is, being that I'm an Aggie, Proud Member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1999.

I have this nice A&M putter headcover but it had this hard plastic clip sewn inside to clip around the hosel/shaft of the putter. It was a poor design as the fabric sewn in to hold the hard plastic clip in place would rub on the putter each time you took the cover on and off, ultimately wearing a hole in the fabric and then the plastic clip would stick out, twist and turn and make it a pain to put the headcover back on.

My Mom is very talented with needles and threads, a very accomplished hand quilter, and basically can do pretty much anything with a needle and thread. I put the headcover in the mail and asked her to work her magic.

She removed the plastic clip and was able to sewn up the hole. Then she sewed on some velcro strips just like you see on the Scotty Cameron headcovers. THANKS MOM!

Now all that's left is to take the "new-old" anser 4 out to the course and give her a test drive.
