Look, I'm all for freedom of religion. I truly am. That said, I would love to see all religion go away (thankfully, it's headed that way in America) but I won't live long enough.

The thing you incorrectly assume about me is that I want your religion outlawed. I don't. What I do want is the day to come when, through logic and reason, religion dies off. When all of the fallacies, contradictions and untruths written in the ancient holy texts are cast aside and no longer believed.

Whatever makes you sleep at night.

The part that offends me the most through all of this is you calling my religion a bunch of fairy tales and fallacies. That's not cool.

Like you said earlier, religion is a touchy subject. You can't expect to have a reasonable discussion on the subject. Really best just to let it.

We try to let conversations go here, but can we drop the religion discussion/debate? It's an intense issue that no one is going to see change the opinions of others. All that's going to happen is that friends/acquaintances are going to get mad at each other for no good reason and it doesn't look good for the site.

Thank you.

Another thing, is stop giving these cunts publicity. The sheriff there in Oregon said it best at their news conference earlier today.

"I will not name the shooter. I will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act."

That's exactly how it should be. Their name should never be said or reported. Their pictures should never be shown. They should either die on site, in a jail cell or in an execution chamber as nothing more than a completely anonymous cocksucking fuck to the world so that they never receive any notoriety or credit for the crime, especially for those these who do this shit because "it'll make them famous".

Let them die alone as an anonymous nobody that not a single person in the world gives a fuck about.

2) I'm sure weed won't be this guys problem. We'll hear of his mental history in a few days.

Not sure if it was real or a hoax, but last night I read that on one of his social media account he had been taking lots of pills. IIRC, the quote was something along the lines of 'needed my sleeping pill, but didn't know which one it was of my medicines, so I just took five pills.'

Maybe it's conspiracy theory or fodder, but there's a belief by some that all of these young male shooters are hopped up on anti-depressants and other over-prescribed meds. That rarely, if ever, gets discussed by all of the expert talking heads following one of these events.

Between the news channels, personal outrage machines social media, and politicians jumping over this to get their share of the limelight, these killers get more attention than they could ever imagine. We won't hear nearly as much about the victims or those who stopped the attack, which is a travesty.

Can't help to pay particular attention to one part of your post CDJ. "Other over prescribed medicines"

We have medicines that are given for things that the side effects are worse than what it's usually being given to treat. So quick to give out medication that may give you suicidal thoughts, this, this, this, etc.

Shame this keeps happening like it's GTA or something. Condolences to the families who suffered loss

Watching commercials for medications makes me never want to take any medicines, especially once they start giving the side effects disclaimer. Yikes.

I know that there are some 'medical professionals' more than willing to diagnose a young person with ADHD, ADD, depression, etc. - and there are also some parents willing for that to happen, for a variety of reasons. These aspects probably need a much closer look than what they are being given. There are definitely people who benefit from modern medicine, but I wonder/worry that some are suffering from just too many meds being given/prescribed.

I would be a case study. While I take plenty of other medications for my heart and Wegener's granulomatosis, we will just stick to the brain.

Without prescription medication: Severe Panic Attacks and Anxiety. Some severe enough to think I was having a Heart Attack and numerous ER visits.
With: The occasional panic attack, never severe.
Side Effects: Tired but that has the variable of my limited lung capacity. Occasional malaise. Can socialize with people, yet still prefer not to.

Without prescription medication: OCD so crazy it had overtaken my life. Hours wasted doing routines.
With: Hours have been cut to just a few routines that take up no more than 30 minutes.
Side Effects: People stay on my friends lists just a bit longer. ;)

I take pretty heavy dosages and the side effects exist but the results far outweigh the negatives. This is also after years of "alternative therapy" and "Eastern Medicine" in my early 30's. One of my doctors was from the Philippines and he eventually had to turn me onto the prescriptions because the alternative method was not working. Everyone is different and there are always misdiagnosed patients. I have had all these symptoms, since as long as I remember. It had an impact on my relationships since I was a young pup. So on the flip side, these issues were not as frequently diagnosed and/or medicated back in the 20th century. Pretty confident that my childhood would have been much different had I been diagnosed and without question in my mind, for the better.

Only have suicidal thoughts when Oklahoma is on TV.

Mass killings have been around long before ADHD was first uttered. The story is terrible but as mentioned already, everyone wants to jump to the conclusion that suits their agenda(s). The media glorifies it and then wonders why it is happening, failing to see they are a part of the problem. What was once fifteen minutes of "fame/infamy" is now two weeks of beating the viewer over the head with why "x" is the reason "y" happened and substitute "x" for "z" depending on what media you are viewing/watching. Glorify anything and others will follow.

My wife is also on medication for anxiety and panic attacks.

Her mother had her put on the medication since she was a little girl...and after having been on it for 10+ years never thought anything of it...because hey she's taking her medicine it makes it all go away.

Not thinking that hey thus medicine is making her depressed all the time...gain over 50 pounds in weight as a teenager after Mom had Dr put her on Paxil. She wasn't eating any more than she was before on that particular medicine. Changed Dr's at my advice and he immediately took her off that saying that was a prime side effect. Of course weight gain made her more depressed...meanwhile not getting to the root of the issue. It was always just medicate medicate...take more medication, take a Xanax and it will all go away.

She is now just at the age of 28 just at the point where she is tired of being on it and wanting to get away from medications on medications.

Buspar is a great substitute for Xanax. My additive nature and Xanax was not a good mix. Of course it varies from person to person. Yes, it does take someone already screwed up in the head, but all these pills and medications are not helping. For you, they help and work. For others, especially those already with numerous screws loose, the pill cocktails can only make it worse.

And it's not just the pills themselves, but how they interact with each other. There really is a problem with doctors over prescribing medication. These days you can go in for a simple running nose and you'll walk out with a bag of pills. Know why? The pharmaceutical companies.

They are constantly bombarding doctors with people who do literally nothing but go from doctor to doctor sales pitching drug after drug after drug. Show up with a hot lunch or some other food and meet with the doctor during his lunch hours or another time to push your drugs. If the doctor agrees, they get sales and the doctor may get some easy money by being a public speaker for the company or drugs. Some of these companies are spending tens of millions of dollars buying free food and other stuff to bring with them to sales pitch doctors.

And then these doctors, if they agree to use the drug, start getting hounded by the companies if those companies don't feel like the doctors are prescribing it enough. So the doctors may feel the need to over prescribe and give these drugs out to patients unnecessarily. It's a never ending cycle.

That is true. My current doctor is a female and her primary care is OB/GYN. So I am pretty she is worn out by vaginas by the time a rep comes calling. ;)

Smooth.

I am sure it happens in very rare cases but in my time dealing with numerous doctors have never seen it (putting a repped drug ahead of their patient care). Seen it in movies and on Law and Order but they like to dramatize things. Doctors take that oath, invest ten or so years to become a doctor and generally are fairly smart individuals. Pretty girl and the free meals are a nice perk but not something they are going to risk their profession over. I think you are not giving them enough credit. Had my share of free lunches, golf rounds and trips, just to add their product line to our catalog. Part of doing business and in most cases nothing more.

We are still talking about minuscule of occurrences (mass muders) compared to number of people on these medications and that is assuming all of the killers were even on them. Far more confederate flags flying around, which are obviously more dangerous and therefore the call to eliminate them. Gotta have something to blame. Video games, metal music, devil worshiping, working for the postal service have all been used in the past.

A major scandal is erupting in the multibillion dollar industry of fantasy sports, the online and unregulated business in which players assemble their fantasy teams with real athletes. On Monday, the two major fantasy companies were forced to release statements defending their businesses’ integrity after what amounted to allegations of insider trading, that employees were placing bets on information not available to the public.

Last week, a DraftKings employee admitted to inadvertently releasing data before the start of the third week of N.F.L. games, a move akin to insider trading in the stock market. The employee – a midlevel content manager — won $350,000 at rival site FanDuel that same week.

The incident has raised questions about who at daily fantasy companies has access to valuable data, how it is protected and whether the industry can — or wants — to police itself.

What information did they have? A secret injury report?

In this case, the data that was leaked by the DraftKings employee, Ethan Haskell, showed what particular players were most used in all lineups submiited to the site’s Millionaire Maker contests. Usually, that data is not released until the lineups for all games are finalized. Getting it early, however, is of great advantage to make tactical decisions, especially when your opponents do not have the information at all.

I don't play daily fantasy, so I am unsure on the exact advantages this provides.

Yep there is NOTHING preventing an employee on the take from telling your opponent your lineup in head to head matchups and/or giving out this type of information to people who slip them some extra money. Bottom line, you are a FOOL if you think DraftKings and/or Fan Duel are on the up and up.

Basically, you want to pick players noone (or fewer people have) = > chance to rise up the rankings.

Employees of DK can use this inside info to their advantage at FD (presumably there are rules against employees gambling on their own site but apparently not at others) and vice versa.

- I understand that, but don't some fantasy football sites tell you % ownage of a player? Isn't that the same thing? The user would still not know how each athlete will perform that week, which is the top factor. Don't get me wrong, I think this was shady and shouldn't happen - but I'm not sure it's on the level of insider trading as some articles are claiming.

- They probably shouldn't allow employees to wager on either site, but that seems like a tough one to enforce.

I don't anything about the sites show - i presumed they didn't b/c otherwise the tweet giving you the data is no big deal

yes they don't know how they will perform but if you are looking to maximize your chances of winning (in the big pools) you need to pick the best players that aren't heavily used hoping to make the right combo of those players to pay off the most

it's not a direct correlation from insider trading but its about as close of a comparrison that I can think of

on the rules enforcement issue - stock analysts at various companies are PROHIBITED from buying/selling/owning stocks that they cover. seems to me that if these companies can monitor their employees stock ownings the fantasy gambling sites could do the same at other daily fantasy sites (i don't think there are that many out there)

Unless I am misreading something, it doesn't sound like they are necessarily wanting regulations (as Rovell stated), but just establishing some guidelines to keep that from happening and avoid (more) bad press.

Though, if they are looking to be regulated that means they must be the industry leader by a mile. The only companies that look for regulations are those who know they can withstand them (if not formulate & shape them) and it will keep the competition (DraftKings) down and/or out.

I still think within a couple years one company will end up buying the other out.

Unless they can prove it was an intentional act they won't get a conviction for Capital Murder/Murder 1 charges.

I'm not sure of this in Oklahoma but allot of states only permit the state to bring a Murder 2 charges (life) IF (and only if) it is the defendant's 2 (or more) DUI.

Assuming Oklahoma has "normal" DUI laws - the most that could be charged is Voluntary Manslaughter (or some states have a "special" crime for death by dui) IF it is her 1st DUI charge.

EDIT: note it appears OK has somewhat "Normal" DUI laws as I was able to find a Murder 2 charge for a 2nd DUI defendant. Judge sentenced her to 25 years (max sentence for Murder 2 is life).

This guy... likes to have a gun around the house.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article41313024.html

Saturday, his deputies arrested 51-year-old Brent Nicholson of Pageland after they found thousands – their best estimate is 7,000 to 10,000 – of handguns and rifles stacked at his house and in a nearby storage building. They found hundreds more at a liquor store Nicholson runs with his father and at his parents’ home, Brooks said.

Deputies also found hunting crossbows; ammunition; taxidermed deer, elk and alligator heads; hunting mounts; tools; air compressors and more than 500 chainsaws

The 500 chainsaws may be more disturbing. Someone needs to pull out one of those radars that can find buried corpses.

That's a shame. It's time this country starts getting serious about DUI when there's injuries or deaths involved. Especially in this case. If her blood test shows her with a blood alcohol level of something like double the legal limit, she absolutely deserves murder charges for every person she killed.

I don't disagree - I was just explaining what the law usually is in this area.

We talked about this a bit in lawschool and the most you could probably constitutionally charge someone with for a death by DUI is murder 2 (life) b/c absent the specific intent of the defendant to specifically cause death/serious bodily harm to the victim(s) you just cannot get to Murder 1.

Fair enough. You would certainly be more knowledgeable in regards to the legality of the various levels of murder charges in regards to this case.

As for this case, something like manslaughter just doesn't seem enough. Sure, it'd be 4 different manslaughter charges and probably attempted manslaughter or something for those injured, so either way she'd be sitting in a jail cell for a long ass time. But when it comes to something like this with DUI, which is an intentional act on its own, manslaughter just doesn't seem enough.

I think you are asking about 2 different things:

#1 Someone who has been sentenced to death

As mentioned above the appellate process is LENGTHY (state court of appeals, state supreme court, us supreme court). Moreover, its not just 1 appeal many death row inmates are on their multiple appeal attempts so you have to rinse/repeat the entire process.

You might ask how can they appeal the same trial multiple times? Well they simply claim that new evidence has come to light. Of course, the problem they run into legally is the legal standard is new evidence has come to light and it was not discoverable at the time of trial. (Think DNA evidence for convicts convicted before DNA technology became available).

Recently, states are having problems obtaining the necessary mix of drugs for lethal injections. Your firing squad idea would likely be ruled "cruel and unusual punishment" in violation of the Constitution. Now why that would be considered "cruel and unusual" when we hung people at the time the Constitution was written and adopted is laughable to anyone that uses logic/reasoning. But the left reads into the Constitution what it sees fit and ignores what it doesn't like. (see e.g., 2nd Amendment)

Anti-death penalty advocates have been pretty successful in recent years going after the companies that make the drugs that are used in lethal injections by picketing their company locations, etc... This has caused somewhat of a shortage of the drug "cocktail" that is used for lethal injection.

#2 Someone with a sentence so.... long they will never leave prison alive.

The answer of why we don't execute them is simple they were not sentenced by a jury of their peers (or judge if they waived their right to a jury trial) to die. That would unquestionably be Unconstitutional to execute someone who has not been sentenced to execution.

Of course, you do have a point of why do some people get sentenced to several hundred year sentences instead of just a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Usually that is because of the way that statutes are written in the states that for whatever reason will permit a 1000 year sentence for multiple counts of X crime but would not permit a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

Yep, it is a shame in regards to execution methods. A bullet would be so much cheaper and likely faster if properly aimed. Thankfully Utah has started bringing back the firing squad. And a rope is reusable, so huge money saver!

And that's actually something that has always bothered me. Someone can sit there torturing and murder a bunch of people, or rape, torture and murder women or children and make their deaths long, slow and agonizing, yet the fuckers get a nice painless "humane" death like someone taking their pet animal and having them put to sleep at the vet.

With some of the crimes those on death row have committed, the pain and suffering they put their victims through before allowing them to die and be at peace, fuck them getting a painless death by needle. I hope it fucking hurts like hell so they can experience a fraction of what their victims felt in their final moments at the hands of these assholes.

I read something different yesterday that the prosecution now believes the woman drove intentionally into the crowd. If correct, its odd she wasn't charged with 4 counts of murder 1:

. A person commits murder in the first degree when that person unlawfully and with malice aforethought causes the death of another human being. Malice is that deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a human being, which is manifested by external circumstances capable of proof.

A person commits murder in the first degree when the death of a child results from the willful or malicious injuring, torturing, maiming or using of unreasonable force by said person or who shall willfully cause, procure or permit any of said acts to be done upon the child pursuant to Section 7115 of Title 10 of the Oklahoma Statutes. It is sufficient for the crime of murder in the first degree that the person either willfully tortured or used unreasonable force upon the child or maliciously injured or maimed the child.

The difference between Murder 1 and Murder 2 is the severity of punishment (death v. life is the max respectively). Seems to me that if they really have evidence of intentionally driving into the crowd Murder 1 is the proper charge. Of course, alcohol/drugs negate intent so perhaps they have some evidence of intent but currently only murder 2 charge b/c they also have some evidence of alcohol/drugs.

SmoothPancakes
10-27-2015, 09:35 AM
Well, from what I've seen online, it sounds like they are at least pursuing murder 2 charges. That much I'm happy about. No deals, no pleas, no lesser charge bullshit, she absolutely deserves murder 2 for every death and attempted murder for every injured person.

how were you surprised? its been obvious Obama was going to reject the pipeline for years and he just "delayed" his decision until he got a decent jobs report to minimize any political blowback from union members (who actually agree with the GOP on this issue).

Assuming you Canadians don't just move on and ship the oil to China (or some other country) - Yes 100% guarantee a GOP President would absolutely approve the pipeline and almost assuredly be done within his/her first 100 days after taking office.

Canadian government is kind of stuck because the proposal to move the oil to China is being blocked on the West Coast by Environmentalists, the BC government and First Nations groups. There is some talk of running a pipeline to Hudson's Bay and shipping to Europe and Africa but the cost benefit analysis just isn't adding up. Keystone investors are apparently not abandoning the project as they believe the Republicans will win the next election...

Well, since apparently sharing an opinion that isn't 100% the same as the PC and/or Christmas Nazis at OS is apparently a no no, I guess I'll make my post here. Those offended at OS can choke on my big fat dick.

In regards to the outrage at Starbucks about only having red cups with a green logo and heaven forbid they don't have Christmas stuff plastered all over their overpriced cups of shitty coffee...

"The whole thing is stupid as hell. If you care about Christmas that much, go donate to a charity, go help feed the homeless, help out the hungry and poor. Go donate to Christmas campaigns to help make sure underprivileged kids get toys and presents for their Christmas mornings. No, let's bitch because Starbuck's doesn't have a bunch of Christmas stuff on their overpriced coffee cups. Nothing but a bunch of fake asses looking for something to act offended by and bitch about in social media. It's people like those I intentionally say Seasons Greetings or some other PC saying literally just to piss them off for my pleasure. Works every time with them.

That's all I got to say on the topic."

bdoughty

Did someone get banned at OS? Oh the fond memories of waving the ban stick.

I would think the green and red color are enough to be considered Christmas-y. People like to bitch and moan about anything and everything. The "War on Christmas whiners" are just as annoying as the "Freedom From Religion jackasses" who sit in Wisconsin, trying to save the world, one nasty letter at a time.

No, not that I know of. I made that above quoted comment in reply to the discussion at the time of the Starbucks outrage, only to get some butthurt fucktard posting about "always gotta be that one guy" and "this is why threads get closed", on a general Off-Topic thread with thousands of replies. (think our Anything thread)

So I said fine, if sharing different opinions is apparently a problem, I'll delete my post. I couldn't delete it, so just edited it to a brief sentence or two about not wanting to offend the PC and/or Christmas police.

Heaven forbid someone share a different opinion. Now I remember why I never visited OS for years until going back for the MLB The Show forums last year when I bought my PS4. Full of never ending whiny bitches who get offended at anything and everything.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/11/14/why-the-paris-isis-terrorists-used-ps4-to-plan-attacks/

Saw an article late this afternoon that Forbes was incorrect (http://kotaku.com/reporting-error-leads-to-speculation-that-terrorists-us-1742791584).

Last Friday, Islamic State terrorists attacked several locations in Paris, France, killing more than 120 people and injuring hundreds more. Over the weekend, as more information emerged, reporters and analysts began to speculate that the terrorists used an unlikely tool for coordination: the PlayStation 4. As it turns out, that was all based on a reporting mistake.

The article, which has over 475,000 pageviews and theorizes that a terrorist could also “spell out an attack plan in Super Mario Maker’s coins and share it privately with a friend,” reports that a Belgian official drew links between the PlayStation and the Paris attacks.

What Forbes missed was that Jambon actually made those comments on November 10, three days before the Paris attack. Jambon was speaking in the broader context of Belgium’s security weaknesses, not drawing a connection between the PS4 and last week’s terrorism.

And as for the PlayStation 4 that Forbes says was found in the raids? Turns out that was an error, which they’ve since edited out.

Capt. Robert Falldorf of the Grand Island Police Department said a staff member spotted the box in the band room, but could not recall seeing it there before. The staff member did not think the box looked like it held any kind of band instrument.

Falldorf said the Grand Island Public Schools safety officer was contacted, with that person agreeing that Walnut Middle School should be evacuated as a precaution. All students and staff walked to Grand Island Senior High, which is just a few blocks north of Walnut.

Falldorf said the call to the Grand Island Police Department came in at about 1:50 p.m. The Nebraska State Patrol was then contacted, with the Grand Island Fire Department also responding to the scene.

He said the State Patrol brought a canine unit, although he did not know whether the dog was used to help determine that the package was harmless. The State Patrol bomb unit determined that they could open the latches on the box, and that is when the accordion was discovered inside.

Is that better or worse than kids drinking a fuel/Mountain Dew combo?

A second Greenbrier teen has died and two more received medial treatment after officials said they drank a mixture of Mountain Dew and racing fuel (http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/robertson/2016/01/26/second-teen-dies-after-drinking-racing-fuel-mixed-soda/79344968/) last week.

On Thursday, Jan. 21, authorities were called to the Franklin Farms home of 16-year-old Logan Stephenson, who was found dead in his bed.

Within minutes, they were called to a second home, on Cemetery Road, because the boy’s best friend had begun having seizures, Greenbrier Police Chief K.D. Smith said in an earlier interview with The Times.

I dropped my phone in the water when one of my dogs decided to jump off the high ground I set him on into the water so my phone isn't holding a charge right now (plus there's currently no cell service in the area). Glad to hear you and your family are ok, Bill. I had a similar situation in 2008 (though I had enough warning to leave because it was a hurricane). Nonetheless, my house was on the water so I got 5 feet too.

One thing that I learned from all of that was that personal belongings, memorabilia and even irreplaceable sentimental items don't mean anything. Whatever you've lost is gone and you just move on.

We've had alot of flooding in Houston as well this year and fortunately I'm not in a trouble spot so I've easily avoided all of it. The mess that caused the flooding in Louisiana is supposed to be here for the next several days (it started yesterday). Hopefully it's not as devastating as it has been there (I'm sure I'll be fine).

Appreciate it fellas! They weren't talking ANYTHING like that at noon. They were just talking maybe some heavy rain, a couple storms here and there, maybe a few of them severe. Instead we ended up with a widespread tornado outbreak like you'd see on the plains in Oklahoma. I went and did some research this morning. Our county, the entire county, has only seen 6 tornadoes since 1950, four of them being F0s. The closest tornado to my city before last night had been an F2 that dropped 3 or 4 miles south of town and tracked southeast for 3 miles back in 1986.

I'm anxiously awaiting the results of the Northern Indiana NWS damage surveys that they'll be doing this morning. I want to see the map with the tracks of the tornadoes plotted out. Also to find out officially how many tornadoes there actually were, since a good portion of those 41 reported tornadoes were probably duplicates of the same tornado.

And the fun ain't over. We're under threat again today. We're looking at almost the exact same atmospheric conditions this afternoon. Already humid as hell, gonna be 86 today, heat index in the mid 90s, got a cold front come through sometime later today that is expected to kick off more storms.

I also have another picture I found this morning, taken from our neighboring city about 12 miles to our northeast. It's the same tornado that just skirted the north side of town here, but it's a hell of a picture, taken of the tornado out in the country, with the press box of the local high school's football stadium in front of it. I'll try to get it posted here in a bit when I get a chance.

SmoothPancakes
08-25-2016, 08:36 AM
Here's the picture I was talking about, with the football stadium in the foreground and the tornado passing behind it. This exact football stadium is where we're gonna be broadcasting a football game from tonight. It's the first game of the season between our city and this city, hated rivals in sports. Playing a football game in the same location just 24 hours after a sight like that, what a crazy time it's been.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160825/aeec02c840c6f48de510a382857d861a.jpg

And like I said, it's not over yet as they're talking more storms this afternoon and evening. Except this time they're actually saying there's a risk of severe storms and tornadoes, unlike yesterday when there was just talk of storms and heavy rains.

I'm planning on it! This really blew up out of nowhere, dozens of meteorologists, both people with the National Weather Service, to local guys on TV were completely caught by surprise by this. Just 12 hours before it started, there had been nothing in regards to expectations or possibilities of tornadoes in our area.

Also came across a video of the tornado, when it was still 20-30 miles southwest of us, before it got to my city. This thing was already massive at times long before it got near us.

Preliminary survey results came in tonight. Between NE Indiana and NW Ohio, we had (so far) 14 confirmed tornadoes. Of those confirmed, 8 were rated EF-0, 3 rated EF-1, two rated EF-2 and one EF-3.

The EF-3 was just across the state line near Woodburn, Indiana, caused a bunch of damage there. Our tornado, that passed just north of town, is currently rated an EF-2, along with the tornado that touched down between here and Woodburn.

So it was a hell of a storm that night. That single storm put down 6 tornadoes on its own. An EF-0 northeast of Fort Wayne, an EF-3 near Woodburn, an EF-2 15 minutes later near Antwerp, Ohio, 20 minutes later the EF-2 just north of me, 15 minutes later an EF-1 west of Napoleon, Ohio and then a very brief EF-0 in a field southeast of Liberty Center.

That alone is a crap ton of tornadoes. Then you include the OTHER storm further south of us that put down 8 tornadoes across 6 different counties in Indiana and Ohio.

Then another handful of tornadoes, at least 6 more, maybe as many as 10 in north-central Indiana, down near Indianapolis and over northwest of Dayton.

And all this on a day where we were just at risk for some simple storms and rain. As of noon that day, there was zero mentions of any risk of tornadoes around here, both from the NWS and on the local news channels in Toledo.

For anyone who might be interested, here's the link to the page the Northern Indiana office created and has been updating the last two days with information on the storms. Hopefully they'll have some new stuff up later today with more info from the surveys. They have a table, though currently blank, that they plan to list the counties and issuance time for tornado warnings and the lead times for when the storms/tornadoes actually hit. I am really looking forward to see that completed table, see just how much warning and lead times they were able to give people on these storms. Current national average lead time is 13 minutes, so I'm very curious to see how the numbers compare from Wednesday night.

Thanks man. It was a bit of a tense evening. All three news stations broke in live on air around 5 or 5:30 and stayed on air the entire time until after 9pm giving constant live updates and analysis and showing the radar scans to warn people. It was a bit funny because in addition to killing off most of the primetime TV schedule that night, they completely killed their 6pm newscasts, so it was 11pm before any of the stations had their first newscast since noon.

But it helped, because they were able to get a good look at the storms on radar and relatively pinpoint where the most threatened areas were in regards to the tornadoes. Some of the scans, you could see a pretty defined hook start to form, making it easy for even those at home to know exactly where the tornado was on the map.

We definitely lucked out though. That thing probably would have majorly fucked up this town if it had come into town instead of just brushing to the north. The damage that it did do out north, it would have done so major carnage in town.

Hopefully all of us here can get a break from the weather, lol. I know I'm all weathered out. I'm fine with sun the rest of the year, lol.

I was cool the entire time it was happening. I didn't care too much about losing stuff. I only cared about my wife's emotional state and keeping my dogs above the water. My wife had 2 brief moments of emotional distress but she held it together much better than I anticipated. What I think helped her was that once we made it to a friend's house after rescue (thanks again #CajunNavy), she realized that she could redo the house HGTV-style. She was pretty excited about that.

Cleanup's coming along. The good thing about so much farmland around here is very few buildings actually got hit. I think the total in the tornado we had here was one business, 5 houses and a couple barns were damaged or destroyed. The majority of it was crop damage.

I don't know if this thread is really right for it, but :dunno:. A lot of you guys are among the closest friends I have, so I wanted you to at least know what's going on. Any help for my family would be fantastic.

My high school just had a school shooting this morning. My father works at the school and my nephew is a freshman there. Thankfully, both are o.k.

Holy crap. I saw news of a school shooting in Kentucky I believe it was, but to have it be your high school with family working or attending there still, I can't even imagine the feelings you must have had upon seeing that news. I'm glad to hear your dad and nephew are OK CLW.

Small world. I’m glad to hear your family is ok. My condolences go out to those who aren’t so lucky. I teach in a school and this is something we unfortunately prepare for.

Thanks guys! Yeah My mom taught in the school system there (elementary) until she retired last year and they had the state police go through the entire school system pre-school - high school to teach the faculty how to handle the situation (a neighboring high school 30 mins away had a school shooting when i was in high school 20 years ago) and sounds like all the proper protocols were followed.

The local media is reporting that the shooter dropped his gun (presumably after all his shots were fired) and attempted to mingle back into the fleeing student population but was caught by students/faculty and then taken into police custody.

Seriously, every school in the nation should go through training to handle situations like this. It may be expensive, but we have reached a point in this country that it literally can happen at any school. Even here in NW Ohio, there was word going around about a school shooting threat being made towards one of the nearby schools. When the lives of hundreds of kids are concerned, thinking "it'll never happen here" is a foolish and idiotic thought.

Glad to hear your family all made it out safe CLW, and that the number of fatalities and wounded wasn't worse. Also glad to hear they got the jackass alive. The shooter can face deserved justice, and the police, school and families can get a reasoning and motive behind why the kid did it.

Update: sounds like everyone else is "expected" to recover physically. One of the more seriously wounded is a pretty good friend of my nephew (baseball teammates) who was air evacuated out to Vandy (2 hour drive away) had a successful initial surgery after suffering apparently multiple gun shot wounds to the chest/abdomen
