Battlefield 4 will be set in modern times, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed at GDC Europe today. The game, which was announced with no pomp last month, will have a beta sometime next year, but little else has been revealed. However, with a lag time of six years between Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3, why did the studio go with Battlefield 4 so quickly instead of heading back to Bad Company?

"There's a lot of things inspiring us as to how the franchise will move on. Everything from fans' feedback, to market research and, of course, what we want to build ourselves. It's not just one single thing," said Troedsson, continuing with a hint of sarcasm. "And, yes, I know Battlefield 4 is probably the most creative name we ever could come up with. I can't comment any more on that games because it's all secret."

However, he did go on to say, "We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is. We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."

Hinting, in conclusion, "That doesn't mean there might not be a Bad Company game again in the future."

I'm not really interested in the SP in this. I thought the campaign in Battlefield 3 was terrible. Same with Bad Company 2, even though I really enjoyed the campaign in the original Bad Company. However, since I'll be in the beta, whether or not I buy this is dependent upon the quality of the beta. I realize it's kind of dumb to judge a game based on a beta, but with EA, it's definitely fair. The beta for Battlefield 3 was a buggy, unbalanced mess, and that's exactly what the final game was for several weeks after release until they finally got around to patching it all. People falling through the map, overpowered flashlights, shotguns were ridiculous, lag out the ass, and then they introduce the stupid ass "rent a server" system where if you start doing well, you're going to get booted by the admin. Hopefully they use their brains this time.

I doubt it. Frostbite engine is way different. They're not using anything different here, except it's Frostbite 3; where Battlefield 3 used Frostbite 2.

I'm surprised it took them this long.

I figured that was standard business practice, especially after Infinity Ward and Treyarch snatched up a boat load of names for Call of Duty. Better safe than sorry. Like the article said, they have Battlefield 1 through 9, but 10, 11 and 12 were already taken by others (11 supposedly bringing up warnings of a phishing site on Chrome), so they went even further and snatched up 13 through 20. Even if they never get used, it's a very small price to have the domain under your control in the remote event that there comes a time to use it in the future.

EA and DICE have announced that you'll be able to port any stats, unlocks, and rank you accumulate in the current-generation console versions of Battlefield 4 over to the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 editions of the first-person shooter.

"Whether you are playing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, we want to make your transition to next generation consoles easy," EA said in a press release. "That is why today we are informing the devoted Battlefield community that all the time and effort you spend building up your Battlefield 4 stats will carry over when you upgrade from the Xbox 360 to Xbox One and from the PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4."

At minimum, the PC shooter demands Windows Vista SP2 with dual-core AMD or Intel processors, 4GB of RAM, and a 512GB GeForce 8800 GT or Radeon HD 3870 graphics card.

It's a big old leap to what's recommended: Windows 8 to start off with, and either a six-core AMD or quad-core Intel processor, supported by 8GB RAM and 3GB graphic memory. DICE suggests Radeon HD 7870 and GeForce GTX 660 graphics cards.

Bingo. It completely disrupts the game and because of it, the game is virtually unplayable right now. It's in every single match.

Nothing like shooting at someone while they're bouncing around on your screen.

The rubber band effect when you're trying to move is one of the most annoying issues you can deal with in online games, too, and like I said, it happens every 30 seconds or so in every single game.

PS3. I've read it's a huge problem on PC as well.

They supposedly fixed it today. I don't know for sure as I haven't played since earlier today before they started rolling out more servers.

Played about 10 rounds last night and most of the lag appears to have been fixed. There's still the occasional hiccup, but it's a vast improvement over how it was previously.
