View Full Version : Here is my hope for E3

New poster here, so if this has been discussed already, feel free to delete this. I can't remember where, but I read there is another announcement for NCAA 13 at E3. So here is my hope: I've seen that the Heisman Challenge mode, Mascot mode, etc. are there to draw in the casual gamers. So i'm hoping they'll announce info on details they've added to dynasty at E3. Correct me if i'm wrong, but E3 is more for dedicated gamers. So hopefully they'll announce something like duplicate numbers, spring game, bigger rosters, etc. Thoughts?

I don't think it's been brought up here but here's the article in reference:

NCAA Football
NCAA thought they’d jump the gun a little bit and give you a taste of what they’re bringing to the table a week early. In addition to revealing their Heisman Playbook on Wednesday May 29th, they’re also hosting a Heisman Webcast the same day. There may also be another big announcement in the works that we’re not at liberty to discuss yet...but if we were you we would probably be checking the site regularly for some big NCAA news.

I know what the announcement is so I won't expand on it anymore than that.

Are you at least able to say if it is something that "we" (here on TGT) would consider big? Or that would be considered big by casual gamers?

I can guarantee it's the later and not the former. Our "big" thing is gonna be the new passing and zone engines.

Well, I'm not going to have high expectations on it, so I'll be good there. But based on the responses from both of you, it at least sounds like it could potentially be an interesting and maybe even promising announcement.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but E3 is more for dedicated gamers. You're not wrong, but I think you're being a little loose with your definitions of "casual gamers" and "dedicated gamers".

Heisman Challenge, and modes like it, are not designed to get Grandma off the couch and playing NCAA. Or the girls on the other side of the dorm to stop playing Farmville and play NCAA. When games are truly going after "causal gamers", that's really what they mean. It's an area dominated by the Wii and mobile/Facebook games. There are some 360/PS3 games that are trying to attract that audience. Few, but some.

E3 is for the, generally, "attentive" gamer, I would say. It's not just your hardcore audience that are reading IGN every day, but the general E3 audience can at least be expected to be gaming pretty regularly. It's obviously not for the solely hardcore because, otherwise, it wouldn't be covered by "mainstream press" like G4, Spike, and even major newspapers like USA Today and the Washington Post. Yes, GameTrailers TV is a "hardcore audience" show, but the Spike coverage goes above and beyond what you normally get out of GT.TV.

As much as we, the forums goers of TGT, would hate to admit, features like the Heisman Challenge are aimed directly at audiences like E3. E3 presentations are designed to get buzz going for a product, to get the media interesting in talking about (or, dare we say it, promoting) a product, and to get consumers watching at home interesting in buying a product. That's why Kinect was announced at E3. That's why consoles are generally announced at E3. It's the biggest audience of the year for the gaming industry, and they want to take advantage of it.

From an NCAA / college football perspective, what's more appealing to a large audience? "Scout your players, one rating at a time!" or "You get to control Barry Sanders and win the Heisman!". I think the latter, easily.

The only time that major "hardcore audience" features are going to be announced at E3, are when they're something that everyone could be interested in. CoD Elite (Call of Duty's fancy-pants premium multiplayer system) is really a "hardcore" feature, though they've tried to pawn it off as something everyone can use. But since the game has such a massive appeal, and since "perks" can have an impulse buy influence, it makes sense to advertise it at E3.

Or, to use Star Wars: The Old Republic as an example, there's a reason TOR announcements at E3 were usually massive CGI trailers rather than nuts and bolts gameplay and how you level up. The former sparks interest and discussion. The latter is something only "I've already pre-ordered!" players want to see at E3.

All that being said, I totally understand why we label "the rest of them" as "casual gamers". But it's important to realize that "casual gamers" and "the E3 audience" (which, I believe, is still largely media or other industy folks in physical attendance) are not that different.

EDIT: One more point I meant to make. It's true that, you could reasonably say, everyone paying attention to E3 is probably in the "hardcore" audience for at least one title. But if someone is watching that's a "hardcore" CoD player, their attention is not likely to be drawn to NCAA by enhancements to dynasty. You will generally need to be a "hardcore" sports gamer for that to appeal to you.

Are you at least able to say if it is something that "we" (here on TGT) would consider big? Or that would be considered big by casual gamers? As far as I'm concerned, if NCAA has any presence in the EA Keynote/Press Conference, that alone should get TGT excited. NCAA has been off the E3 stage for a long, long time.

You make a very good point there. Last year was all about Madden (last year was the first year I actually sat and watched extensive E3 coverage and didn't just catch highlight videos or read about stuff on here or other sites), so that NCAA is getting something at E3, that is definitely reason for hope and promise of it being something at least decent or good.

It's clearly future tense, meaning an "some big NCAA news" is yet to come.

If what you're getting out of it is that it's being announced on the site, look at the other descriptions for E3 announcements. That blog says nothing about the EA press conference. It only touts what will be coming to the website: three more Madden playbooks, FIFA news, etc, etc. As far as EA is concerned, they want you to get the news from their site, not elsewhere. That's all "checking the site regularly" means.

Heard it's Season Showdown 2.0, and let's just say I cannot wait to earn fake points for my school in a big fake contest that means absolutely nothing.Even though Tommy's pulling a JB-level of teasing right now, I'm quite confident in saying that Tommy wouldn't say that we won't be "terribly disappointed" if it was Showdown 2.0. Unless Showdown was completely revolutionized (and improved), it would be a "Meh" from most of us, and a negative from the others.

This. Season Showdown has been hated and disliked by a great many on here in the past. No way would G say we wouldn't be terribly disappointed if it really was SS 2.0. That would get ripped harder and so much worse than Heisman Challenge did.

Sadly, yes. NCAA, and all sports games, thrive and depend on the casual gamers to survive. As someone (I can't recall if it was JB, G, Jeff or someone else) said, we (the hardcore gamers) are only a portion of the NCAA sales, it's the casual gamers who drive up the sales of the game, and who EA is relying and depending on to buy the game.

Clearly EA is gearing a lot towards us hardcore gamers with our wishlists, the in-depth stuff they're adding to dynasty and whatnot, the community guys being in contact with the devs and going to Orlando to work with the devs throughout the later winter/spring months, but they have to add stuff to gain interest of the casual gamers and get them to buy the game.

Obviously we (the hardcore gamers) are not happy about some of the casual stuff and fluff being added, but it's a necessity. Hardcore gamer sales alone probably would not sustain the NCAA franchise.

JeffHCross
06-02-2012, 03:19 PM
Well, if you look at the intent of Season Showdown, it was for the hardcore too.

"We've created a system where NCAA players can represent their school. That system also allows us to identify people who play the game as it should be played, as well as calling cheesers out on their bullshit."

Intent and execution, unfortunately, are two completely different things. But I don't think Season Showdown was some casual-recruitment tool. It just became something that the hardcore didn't like, and if the hardcore doesn't like it, it's clearly meant for casual players ;)

Not from the part that I quoted, but this part:

Because they were going through and listing everything that would be talked about at E3. EA says that NCAA jumped the gun a little bit, meaning that they didn't wait for E3 to announce all of their features (like the other games on this list).

I could be wrong, but that's just another way to read it.

It was almost a "wait, did they do it without permission?" way to phrase it. Obviously that would be impossible. I think they were just playing off on the fact that NCAA announced something Wednesday while practically every other game in existence is waiting for Monday or Tuesday.

The experience of being a college football superstar is now even more exciting with a new feature in Road to Glory that allows players to see and feel the game differently during key moments, increasing on-field awareness and creating amazing opportunities.

Check back June 11 for further details, assets and insights from the development team.

Aside from that, no, none that I'm aware of. At this point, it's just watching videos EA releases and waiting for people to receive early copies to give impressions. That and the Season Ticket download will be available on July 6th leading to the release on July 10th.
