I’m about to post this to the site, but figured I’d shoot it to you first.
*
I went in to last nights game against #9 Notre Dame knowing that I had to play a flawless game in order to have a chance.
They are absolutely LOADED on offense, with nearly 90s across the board at all key positions.* Their QB is a Heisman candidate,
their best WR is the Biletnikoff Award shoe-in, and they have two HBs over 90.*
*
I did some scouting of their box scores and stats, and noticed that while they’re talented at RB, they were going to pass early and often.
To adjust for that, I did something I rarely ever do, and I switched up to a defensive scheme that I NEVER play.** I figured with them chucking the ball,
I’d be best served to keep extra defensive backs on the field.* I’m LOADED at safety, and have decent corners so I ended up using the 4-2-5 defensive alignment.
*
On the first drive, ND’s passing attack marched down the field before stalling inside the 15 yard line and settling for a field goal.* That first drive was an exercise in learning the new defense for sure.
In the first quarter, one of my worst fears was realized, when my star HB Kellen Pittman (92 OVR) went down for the remainder of the season (and his career) with a dislocated ankle.
The remainder of the game was placed equally in the hands of Senior QB Joe Hurst, Sopohmore RB Josh Johnson, and BYU Defense.*
*
They each stepped up their games, and lead a balanced attack against ND’s defense.*
*
Hurst was accurate, taking advantage of the eager ND Defense as they crept up to stop the run.* Play Action was there all day for the Cougars, and lead to the game’s first TD as Hurst found Sopohmore sensation
WR James Barnes for a 40 yard TD in the seam.* *A BYU FG as time expired in the 2nd Quarter gave BYU the 13-3 lead.**

BYU would capitalize on getting the ball in the second half by driving down the field to kick another FG, only to see ND match that score moments later.* A couple of stalled drives later, BYU was able to pin Notre Dame’s offense
inside their 15 yard line after a great punt.* Senior QB and Heisman Hopeful Ryan Dobzinski fired a laser to WR Michael White for an 87 yard TD strike, bringing the score to 16-12 BYU entering the 4th and final quarter.
*
Thanks to inspired running by Josh Jackson and Joe Hurst, BYU marched down the field for a TD as we crossed in to the final minutes of the game.** Jackson would finish with 22 carries for 124 yards and a TD.* A 4 and out by ND gave
BYU the ball as time was winding down, inside the ND 15 yard line.* Jackson would add his only score of the game on this possession.
*
When the dust was settled, BYU stood victorious 30-12.
*
Joe Hurst would receive Player of the Game honors with a very good stat line.* 17/30 268 yds and 1 TD.** He added 8 carries for 31 yards.
