I was talking with Coach K this morning and wanted to get some feedback from my fellow coaches on a new approach I wanted to take this season. In the interest of full disclosure, I want to make sure others are aware and ok with my setup to avoid any potential issues.

Looking at my roster, I find myself with a particular void at TE this year. In setting up my playbook to make better use of my personnel, I decided to adjust a couple of my two TE packages with a WR playing the "wing TE" position, as an example. Another example would be subbing a WR in for formations where the TE lines up split in the slot.

I don't know what the offensive play call screen would show when I run one of these formations ( if it recognizes I have a WR subbed in, or if it pulls positions to show off the base formation itself), so I want it out there for discussion.

Personally, I view this as smart personnel choices, and don't see it any different than using packages to sub in dual HBs, or a "Big" package.

Thoughts?

I think it's perfectly fine given your situation. With San Jose State, and my lack of WR talent, I did the opposite. Will it open up the plays for you a little? Maybe, but not drastically I don't think. It also would hurt your running game, so there's the balance you get with those type of subs.

I'm for it.

I am ok with it as long as it is not exploited by a hurry up offense to keep a lb covering the WR for a series.
