With Time Warner Cable here in Ohio, looks like it's time to start seeing what other options we have around here. :fp:

I have Comcast and I don't have much problem with them... price is decent enough and never really have a need to contact customer service. Plus my internet speed beats anything else in town for a fraction of the cost.

Plus, since I don't have a TV in my home office, I can stream everything from the night before on my computer. We don't have a DVR and get by with that.

Yeah I'm not too worried about it. I was surprised they were bigger than Time Warner by 2x.

Well, maybe I'll see what happens. I've heard nothing but never ending negative things about Comcast. But with some of you having Comcast and either not having issues with them or being happy with them, maybe I'd be willing to see what they do after the merger (if it happens) and what they're like.

If I can get those kinds of speeds, for a reasonable price, and not deal with bandwidth caps, speed throttling, or overage costs, I'll be happy with that.

Cable could be a different issue, not sure how cable pricing will change with the merger, plus if the talk is true of having to get a new set top box that Comcast insists on over that of my current Time Warner box (especially since I have about 60% of my DVR space used up with certain programming that I've saving and not deleting right now, be it certain episodes of TV shows, movies that rarely are ever shown on TV (like once every couple years rare), etc, I'd really hate to lose all of those recorded programs just because Comcast insists I use their set top box.

Yeah we have had them for awhile now and have been pretty happy. We just re-upped for another year (although that was a hastle b/c a douche made us actually cancel the policy mail our old stuff back then call back and get a new account for the deal we got). The only issue is they really seem to throttle the upload speeds for some reason and the speeds for the net are not as fast as Comcast but I don't download allot other than the free PS games on PS4/PS3 so I can just leave them on over night.

Genevieve Sankey, 48, crashed her 2003 Chevrolet Silverado into trees along Phoenix Road in Rush Township at 3:30 a.m. Sankey told state police at Philipsburg that she left the road due to slippery conditions.

The car was towed from the scene. Sankey was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.

I'm not against the right. I agree with a lot of right core values. I just don't like the seeming lack of compassion for those who have not. Like, I don't agree with the way Obamacare is implented but I support 100% the overarching reason for it. The right, to me, is very black and white. The left plays in the gray area more. I'm a practical "best of both worlds" type of guy.

Patience and waiting are not the same. Patience is virtuous, waiting without exerting effort is not......I think we agree but the terms are not synonyms and you know what a philosophical nerd I am for correct definitions :D

The Left and Right are both black/white, as they should be.....this very modern notion of confused gray area ethics/morals stuff is bull. I would guess you view the "reason" for the new healthcare law as compassion and the needs of the poor. I would agree that compassion and care of those in need is a good thing much like charity. However, when forced to perform charity........well, it is no longer charity by definition. I would disagree on the "reason" for these new laws and believe it is merely more acquisition of power for those that have it, be they on the left or right. Care and compassion for our fellow man has and will continue to be used to erode individual liberty from the left much like foreign threats and "national interests" have been from the right. Sadly, there are way too many that have traded liberty (over several decades) for some form of security or another (both left and right) for us to avoid having both taken completely...............

For the record Bill, I never viewed you as a raging government is the answer lefty :D

Dealing with death is such an odd topic for me because I haven't really had to in my life. I have such a small family. My grandpa passed away when I was 3, my dad passed away 13 years after I last saw him, so I just haven't had to deal with it much. Unfortunately a friend of mine passed away today from his battle with cancer. These aren't things we are supposed to deal with in our mid-30's but unfortunately that was the hand he was dealt. It was diagnosed as terminal about 8 months ago, and he was able to enjoy lots of things in his final year of his life to go along with the pain. He'll definitely be missed.

I'm sorry to hear that man. At least he got to go out and do some things and enjoy life during his final months.

Unfortunately, just found out two weeks ago that my mom has cancer. Really haven't told anyone yet, not friends, no one at work, etc. but based on the conversation, probably the best time for it. They're still not sure where it's at, she has to go to Toledo for a PET scan tomorrow to try and locate it.

Could be thyroid (though a biopsy there came back negative), could be lung (she first found out because she was having trouble breathing, turns out she had 2 liters of fluid that had built up in her chest cavity and had collapsed her left lung, the fluid came back with cancer cells in it), could be colon (my uncle Charlie, my mom's brother, died of colon cancer in September 2008). They're hoping to find out where it is by the PET scan.

The oncologist is optimistic. He thinks they might have caught it early enough that it hasn't spread yet or at least hasn't spread far. We'll find out next Friday, when he should have all the results back, PET scan, a full genome analysis of the fluid that was drawn out that he sent to a lab in Philadelphia, etc.

Definitely not a great time right now. She's still dealing with a fluid building up, her left lung collapsed again and had to have the fluid drained last Wednesday, so she's under orders to do as little as possible, just sit on the couch, rest, watch tv, etc. So it's been a busy and tense two weeks as we wait to find out more information.

That's good to hear man. Thankfully he was able to get that time to go out and just live and not have to put up with the daily bullshit of life.

After everything my family went through last July and August with my grandmother, it seems like so "simple" a thing to say during a time of loss, but remembering the good times, the laughs, the fun, etc, and then just accepting it in that they are no longer in pain, that they no longer have to suffer, it really does help.

I was able to get through my grandmother's funeral rather well off thinking about all that, thinking about all the times I spent with her growing up as a kid, and then thankful that she was no longer suffering from all the pain she was in while in the hospital, no longer dealing with her dementia, no longer forced to lay in that hospital bed day and night, etc.

Tough news, guys.

My best to both of you in difficult times.

Damn guys. Really puts my stupid shit into perspective. Sorry to hear guys. Be strong.

Man that sucks Smooth. Hopefully they did get it early enough

Thanks guys. The oncologist she talked to Friday afternoon is optimistic. He's not promising anything good or bad, but he is optimistic that they may have caught it early enough and that they can get rid of it. He just needs to locate exactly where it originated from before he can start laying out a treatment plan. So far though, it doesn't appear to have taken over. She hasn't lost weight, she's still eating just fine, she still has plenty of energy and a normal appetite.

The only thing keeping her down right now is that build up of fluid in her chest cavity. The doctor thinks too much exertion, too much activity is causing that fluid to build up at a fast rate, so to avoid having her lung collapse and need to have the fluid drained for a third time in three weeks, he's got her pretty much commanded to the couch or bed with minimal activity, trying to help slow the build up of fluid. It seems to be working. Last week, she only made it from the previous Thursday to Wednesday before the fluid collapsed her lung again and they had to drain it. She's made it a full week now today, and she isn't having any problems.

There's no shortness of breath like she was having the previous two weeks, she doesn't feel like she's short of oxygen when just moving around. She's breathing alright, she doesn't feel like she's having any issues with either lung. They sent home a little breathing test thing, she has to full exhale, then inhale with this little plastic thing, trying to reach a certain number. It's supposed to help strengthen her lungs, and it'll probably also help serve as a warning if she has trouble with her left lung again.

So we're hopeful and optimistic right now. We just waiting for all of the tests and results to get back, and hoping that wherever it's originated from, it's in an easy to treat place and that the cancer itself will be easy to treat.

Well, bad news.

My mom met with the oncologist today after he got all the test results back. She has a very rare cancer in her lungs. It's apparently genetic and she's had it her whole life, it just randomly switched on sometime a couple months ago. She's stage 3B and it's not curable.

If she did nothing, she'd have about a year. However, they are going to have her taking some kind of smart pill, that will attack the cancer. It's apparently very effective and she'll take it for as long as it works. Then there's a new drug coming out in 3 months that he hopes he could move her to when the first drug is no longer effective.

The oncologist said he hopes she will have 3 years or longer as long as she tolerates the first drug. He told her not to put up the white flag yet, but the news is not good at all.

I appreciate it guys. It's like getting sucker punched in the guts. The oncologist had been really optimistic and hopeful, only to get this kind of news. While it's not extremely dire, only weeks or months, the fact that it's now official that there's only so long, whether it be one year or five years, knowing that time is slowly ticking down, it's been rough.

We've been handling the news well all evening, but sitting here now alone, thinking about it, god it's starting to shake me. If I didn't have to work in a couple hours, I'd probably walk down to the nearest bar and crawl inside a bottle of whiskey.

I know how you feel, my dad is in the hospital 300 miles away with blood clots in his lungs. You just have to appreciate the time you have with your family, instead of hiding in the bottle of whiskey. Even went through this myself years ago and went from only having a few minutes to live, to a rare incurable disease with no idea what lifespan I had, to 5 years later and it has been in remission.

Before you head down that road of hitting the bottle, hit me up and we can talk, will PM you my number.

Thanks steeler. I won't be becoming an alcoholic. I actually hardly drink beer anymore. I haven't had any alcohol since Super Bowl Sunday. But, I sure feel like I could go for some right now. Like I said, it sort of comes in waves. Most of the time I'm good and hold up pretty well. When I'm alone or just sitting there thinking about everything going on, that's when it hits me.

Of course, it probably doesn't help that I've had some sort of mild level of depression throughout my life. Never been diagnosed by a doctor, never taken any medication, but every now and then I'll just go into this depression funk for anywhere from a day or two to a couple weeks. Then, just as suddenly as it hit, I snap right back out of it.

So that probably isn't helping too much, between just sort of being depressed over all of this stuff for the past month, being busy as hell at home between taking care of the pets, making dinner, doing the dishes, doing laundry, sweeping and cleaning the house, refilling my mom's drinks, refilling her bird feeders, whatever else needs done, leaving me pretty well exhausted day after day, on top of all the mental games going on in my head.

At least I know I can always hope on here any time, day or night and get whatever I need to off my chest. That'll certainly help. Thanks guys.

Need some opinions here. A bit of backstory...

My wife & I have been hearing a bump noise under our floorboards when the washing machine or dishwasher kicks on. We called our regular plumbing crew out and they seemed to think it'd be an easy fix such as a loose clamp or something. The guy investigates under the house and comes back out telling my wife we have big problems with old/corroded copper pipes, shows her a picture (including one with a set of vice grips holding a pipe in place). Tells her that we're lucky we didn't have a pipe burst in the winter and we'll probably have to have all our pipes replaced. Fine, we trust this company but we want to have a second opinion.

Fast forward to yesterday, my wife calls a plumber company (BBB rated A+) and tells the guy on the line what's going on, that we want someone to inspect the pipes under our house and see if they come to the same conclusion. They say it will be $59 to send someone out. Great... we can deal with that. Then comes this morning, two guys show up and say "yeah, that $59 is just a dispatch fee, for us to actually get to work will cost you another $186". I told them to fuck off.

Is that normal business practice around you guys?

JBHuskers

Did you still have to pay the $59?

Yeah, the $186 was just to under the house and inspect and give us their opinion.

I told them we refuse to pay the $59 because they hadn't even picked up a tool. He said that we still have to pay it and I said "well send us a bill". He didn't like that either but we'll let them take us to small claims court or something.

I'm sure you could find a place in town who does free inspections.

gschwendt
05-13-2014, 11:49 AM
We just had Roto Rooter come out who I used for my house before I moved into my wife's and there was not only a free inspection but he investigated under the house, found no issues with the pipes and said that we wouldn't have to do anything. He said he wouldn't recommend doing anything as far as replacing the pipes for certainly the next several years before we sell the house and likely long after that... the pipes are in really good shape.

He said the bump we're hearing is that the particular section of pipe under the floorboards is because the way the hanged that section, it's a little loose but that it's nothing to be concerned about. They could secure those hanging areas to be more secured to the house but it's not necessary unless the bumping noise bothers us enough in the future.

He also found the vice-gripped section and said that it was a section where they should have used a reducer elbow but instead used a reducer T-joint and just clamped & sodered shut the unused portion... the vice grips probably aren't doing anything at this point anyway.

After all that, no charge.

The guy that probably came out from the original plumber company is probably an apprentice that was over-recommending and/or trying to scam us. We'll sort that out with that company but in the end, we liked the plumber that came out today, he was knowledgeable and explained essentially everything.

So, it appears I'll be a homeowner at some point in the future. With my sister moving into my grandma's house at the beginning of June, my mom is going to just "gift" her share of the house to my sister, in doing so cutting down on how much she'll have to pay to my two aunts and uncle for their shares. It'll be less she'll owe and less she'll have to worry about on a mortgage.

However, there is a condition. With my mom gifting her share of my grandma's house to my sister, my parents are going to remove any share my sister has in my parents house. They're going to talk to the lawyer in the coming months about adding my name to the house, having the full 100% share of the house fall into my name upon the passing of both of my parents. Since my sister will already have a house with living in my grandma's old house, my parents house will then simply become mine.

So sometime in the future, after the inevitable for both my parents, I'll automatically own their house. The really good thing is, the house is already paid off. There is no mortgage at all on this house. And since the full 100% share of the house will fall into my name and I wouldn't have to pay off my sister for her half share of the house, I won't owe a damn thing in regards to mortgages. I'll just have to worry about property taxes each year and then the various utilities. But otherwise, I'll own a fully paid off house.

The only bad thing, there probably goes my dream of moving to Colorado and getting season tickets for the Broncos and Rockies. :D While I could still do that, owning a house that has no mortgage attached to it and never having to worry about paying a mortgage for the rest of my life (while sitting here at age 27) would be too good to pass up, versus selling the house and then having to deal with a mortgage for god knows how long on a house in Colorado.

gschwendt,

Not actually seeing it for myself, I'd say what you're hearing is air-hammer. If it only happens when you turn on something like your washing machine it's due to the pipes not being strapped properly. As long as they are banging around like crazy it's nothing to worry about, it's just annoying.

We have the same issue at our house, the washing machine is tied to the copper that is looped in the slab at the kitchen. They (I'm assuming) ran the copper down the kitchen wall and into the garage wall where the washing machine hot/cold box is. When we bought our new front load washing machine, it's more efficient but has a stronger motor so it turns ON OFF as it's sucking water, compared the old top load washer, well when it does that the copper that wasn't strapped properly in the kitchen wall will slap down the wall, you can hear it like someone knocking. Doesn't do it all the time, more annoying that anything else.

Being a Lic Master Plumber, I'd guess that is what's happening at your house, sounds like the pipes are just not strapped properly. Lucky for you, since it's a pier and beam house you could re-strap the pipe and secure it. I could do the same but that would require ripping out cabinets and Sheetrock, I'll pass.

On a side note, if I could request some hits on my site it would help out, the more hits I get the better as I'm slowly trying to move up on search engines. Any click on the site is appreciated. http://www.eagleplumbingbcs.com/ Thank you!

You might want to clear that out. Google and many other search engines no longer look at Meta-keywords (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html). Yes I'm about 90 miles north/west of Houston in Bryan/College Station. Since you'd be on the northwest side it would probably be closer than 90 miles. If it's anything large that requires a permit, i.e. water heater replacement (repairs are fine) it will take extra time as I'm not on file with those municipalities (I can be added, just takes time). If it's something other that doesn't require a permit I'd love to help out. Thank you sir.

I found out about 2 1/2 hours ago that my mother died this morning.

I got a text from my sister saying she died. It's a strange deal because it's like hearing a stranger died. I haven't talked to her in a little over ten years. She was a controlling, manipulative, mean-spirited person and, for the good of myself and my daughter, I cut her out of my life years ago after she crossed the line in her shitty ways by trying to take my sister's daughter away from her (just to be shitty and hurt my sister).

I'm not phased by her dying, but it is unfortunate that it turned out this way. I have no regrets about what I did (I had to protect myself and my family from her crosshairs) but I do wish it didn't have to go down like it did.

If I learned anything from her, it is to not end up like her (with 2 of her 4 children not speaking to her for the last decade of her life).

Thanks, guys.

Because I've had a screwy family situation since I was about 14, I have a different way of viewing family.

I don't feel any obligation to them. If they are good to me, I'm good to them. If they are asses, I cut them out of my life. I feel that your friends say more about you than your family does. You didn't choose your family, if they are assholes it's not your fault. If your friends are shitty, it is your fault. You chose them.

I am lucky to have some very good friends, including some that I've known since grade school. Last Sunday I went to an English Pub at 8:30 AM to watch the last day of the Premier League. 2 of my oldest and best friends went with me. It, of course, was Mother's Day. Both of these guys' mothers died in the last few years and they were pretty close to them. I felt a little guilty that my mother was still around and theirs were not. We had a pretty good talk about all of it and, in retrospect, I'm glad we did. I explained to them how I view family and how I view friends. I thanked them both for being good friends and good people that I can be proud to associate with.

That was all the Mother's Day I needed.

This!

Family can be great but it can suck as well as most feel an obligation to them because they are "family"

Sorry to hear the sad news.

You're more than welcome to come up to Aggieland and drink at my "pub". The kegarator in the garage is always running and I do love me some futbol. If you ever come up my way for an Aggie game let me know and we'll toast to your Mom, she was your Mom after all and you're here because of her so that's a positive.

I feel the same way about my dad. He's still alive but living in a convalescent hospital. I've only visited 2 or 3 times out of guilt or what ever cause he's too old to be a pain anymore. But its depressing to go. Cant really have a conversation with him and this is the rest of his life with nurses that don't care etc. I just sit there for 45 minutes out of obligation and a little caring but not much else. I'll grieve when it happens but it wont be the same as a close friend

My mother's funeral is this afternoon (she died visiting my sister in Wyoming). Of course, I won't be there. I saw her obituary online (I was left out, as was my middle sister but our kids were mentioned) and saw a few comments posted from people I know.

None of it meant much to me but today a friend of mine (we've been friends since Kindergarten) texted me about the "worst day" of his life. We were 12 and his parents, who had been separated for months, officially divorced. At that time, I lived in Ohio and he was spending the Summer with me. He tried to make a collect call to his mother that night and she refused it (he said that she apologized about 15 years ago, explaining that she was too emotional to talk that night). It devastated him. He told me about how my mother talked to him and comforted him. I had forgotten about that (I was in another room while they talked that night, I was asked to leave) because it was so long ago. He's never forgotten it though.

I guess, in all this mess, it was good to hear something positive from someone that still means something to me. She wasn't a bad person, she was just part of something that some of us could never forgive.

This is just amazing. Molly Schuyler is about 120lbs dripping wet. I have seen her on TV doing some major eating competitions but this one hit close to home. Taking on the 72oz Steak + salad + baked potato and rolls at the Big Texan. A pretty tough challenge. A bunch of my friends tried it once and failed miserably as you have to do it in under an hour. That would be at a net loss of $72.00 for failing.

She does it twice in under 15 minutes. A Big Texan record. I imagine her next bowel movement could set a record too.

Same here, but our diplomas were actually given to us when we walked across the stage. I think our graduation was also in a church, so it would have looked foolish if we threw them up.

There seems to be a new breaking news alert for a shooting somewhere nearly every day now. Yesterday in Canada, now tonight in Seattle. Is it sad that I'm not even slightly surprised anymore when I see these breaking news alerts of shootings? It's to the point that I see them and just think it's another day, with as often as these are happening now.

I have both the worst luck and damn great luck. Just spent $250 on new brakes and rotors last Friday. Today, coming home from work ended up having one of the arm mounts under my car break (unbeknownst to me at the time), fouling up my power steering. Thankfully I was near my neighbor's shop and was able to get the car there, only to have the driver side arm mount break while he was checking to see what the issue was. The second arm breaking caused the engine to drop a couple inches and in doing so completely killed all steering. My wheel now freely spins around and around like a prize wheel. Estimated cost to fix, $1,500-$2,000.

So, I'm now without a car as that car is not worth spending $2,000 on to fix. All this a week after spending $250 on new brakes and rotors, HORRIBLE luck. Damn good luck however that the second arm didn't break until the car was already parked at my neighbor's shop. If it had broken while I was driving, with absolutely no control over steering while going 40+ down a busy traffic filled road, I'd probably be sitting in a hospital bed right now. I don't know whether to be really pissed or happy right now.

If you like history there is a ton to see. I was up there last Fall and went to the Old North Church and walked the Freedom Trail which takes you to some historic sites, it's like 2 miles. It was really cool to see all of that stuff and they have a bunch of plaques to read about a bunch of Revolutionary War stuff. Probably need to do it during the day though, I did it my last day before my flight out. Plus getting there you go through the Italian section were there are a ton of awesome places to eat. Stop here and get a cannoli www.mikespastry.com

The introductory rate was $30/month for 30mbps (though, as you can see, I wasn't getting that thanks to my router). It's since gone up to $45/month and will presumably go up next year as well. But they increased the speed from 30mbps to 100mbps without an immediate increase in price.

That's about mine too.... :fp:

Not sure about where you live but here there is so little competition for internet. Basically I have two options and both are priced fairly high. Upload speeds are especially bad in this part of the world.

To be clear, the couch I got is fabric. It does look like leather though.

I have had leather and I really like the look of it. The problem to me is that they are FREEZING cold in the winter and you have to put a blanket down just to sit on it. At least that was my experience - it may be different for you since I'm sure you are running the heat a lot.

Those speeds are unreal for that price though, even with no competition those prices could be a lot higher.Keep in mind that the price is one of those "introductory" deals. It was $30/month for the first year, has raised to $45/month for Year 2, and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to go up in Year 3 and Year 4, then stay at Year 4 prices. It's all about drawing you in ...

I wouldn't complain about $45 though at that speed. Hell for what I'm paying I'd have a Gig down at my price haha

And while I appreciate that Charter is slowly increasing the price rather than going from Year 1 introductory rate to full price in Year 2, it also makes me wonder just how much the full price is going to be. When you advertise $30/month Internet all over the place, it could be construed as misleading (at the least) if the final price is closer to $100. But I've paid decent chunks of change for Verizon FiOS, so I'm willing to spend on my net, especially now that we pretty much use Netflix and Amazon for all our entertainment.

Offer that to lure in new customers, then gradually raise the price to what existing customers were already paying or just raise it near that in general. I've experienced that a few times with DirecTV

My grandma just passed away about five minutes ago. She had a very long battle with dementia so it wasn't a sudden thing. She fought for a very long time and made it to 89.

I spent a lot of time with her growing up as Mom took care of me by herself for many of my grade school years. I spent a lot of New Years Eves at her house staying up late to watch Dick Clark and eating Chex Mix; which was something I usually only ate on New Years as a kid. My love of game shows comes from her too. We'd watch all morning and afternoon everything to Concentration and Price Is Right to Press Your Luck, Scrabble, Joker's Wild, High Rollers, Sale of the Century among many other shows. Of those game shows, we watched Wheel of Fortune all the time and she got me the board game. We would play it on the kitchen table all the time.

Since my uncle is mentally handicapped, he lived with grandma up until she had to go into a home. That's where I started watching wrestling at 5:05 on Saturday nights with the NWA and WCW as Jerry is a big wrestling fan. That would be where I would become fans of Ric Flair and Sting the most. My best grade school friend Chris would come over all of the time too and we'd play Super Nintendo, endless hours of Mortal Kombat II while grandma wondered what the hell it was :)

I remember getting an allowance from her every week, and I would ride my bike right to the convenience store to buy a pack of baseball cards. Or in the late 80's I would buy a lot of the Batman trading cards from the movie or the Desert Storm trading cards. She would walk with me to Steinhart Park to the pool where I would get completely fried and my back would be peeling from being out too long. We'd go out to Arbor Lodge a lot too and walk around.

It's a very odd feeling because I have such a small family, so dealing with death of a family member is something that has rarely happened in my life, but I'm okay, and have a lot from when I was young to look back on.

My condolences JB, she sounds almost exactly like one of my Grandmothers and the relationship we had. Game Shows (she never missed Wheel of Fortune & The Price is Right), UNO, Lawrence Welk and I can still smell the Strawberry Eggo's for breakfast when we spent the the night. She has been gone for more than 20 years but like yourself I have a small family and plenty of memories. From what you wrote about her, she will not be forgotten and is in a better place.

I'm so sorry to hear that man. It sounds like you have a LOT of great memories from many years of growing up around her, so you'll have plenty to remember her by and look back at those years. It'll be tough for a while, especially in the coming days, but those memories will help a lot! As everyone else has said, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. You and everyone else helped me out during a rough week or two last August when I lost my grandmother, you'll for sure have all of us here for you now as you deal with this loss.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that after 9/11. He was with an engine company for the FDNY and returned to his old company after 9/11 to help sift through rubble at the World Trade Center. I had never known that about him until I saw a picture online of him on a fire truck in full turnout gear after 9/11.

A "normal" gun...pistol just wasn't enough? Had to go full auto Call of Duty style

Don't mean to make light of the situation because it's terrible someone had to lose their life over the stupidity of this. But an Uzi?
