As some of you may already know, I recently launched a website called Stat Box Stories where I'm using NCAA Football 12, Madden NFL 12, NHL 12, and FIFA 12 to play games, record statistics, post video highlights, and tell the stories of games I play every week. With Bowl Season beginning next Saturday, December 17th, I am trying to rally some interested guest writers to the cause of trying to create statistical write-ups of all of the Bowl Games for this 2011-2012 season.

If you have yet to read a write-up over at the blog site, here is the most recent example of work done using NCAA Football 12: the Army-Navy Game (http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2011/12/08/24-army-navy-in-ncaa-football-12/). Here also is the link to the guide for guest writers--Write a Guest Story (http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/write-a-guest-story/)--to give you some idea of what is looked for from guest contributors. Our own psuexv here at The Gaming Tailgate actually contributed the first guest story for the site this week, which you can read here: New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Penguins in NHL 12 (http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/guest-post-1-islanders-penguins-in-nhl-12/).

If you think you might be interested in contributing a Bowl Game write-up for publication at Stat Box Stories, consider the following guidelines below and then comment on this post with the game you would like to play:

Bowl Games in NCAA Football 12 can be played on whichever difficulty you like, so long as you specify it.
Bowl match-ups should be played in the designated bowl (obviously), and try to replicate the time of day for the bowl game.
Quarter lengths on the blog so far have been 7 minutes, but as long as you're playing at least 5 minute quarters you'll be fine.
Even if you use named rosters, the write-ups and statistical tracking should reference the player's position and number as though you were playing the game right out of the box. It takes a little bit of extra work when you're collecting the information--trust me, I do it every week--but it's not difficult.
If you sign up to do one of the Bowl Games, it must be completed and submitted before the game is played in real life so that it can be posted before the game.
The statistic spreadsheet template file is now available as a Google Doc here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoGtz45Z_eUkdFIyYmRPVTJNdzdNNzQzQTJQcmtve lE If you choose to do a write-up for one of the games, please download the file to your computer and fill in the statistics, then email it to me along with the write-up and highlights.
Submissions will be emailed to paakaa10@gmail.com.
And here is the list of Bowl Games:

If we can get a write-up and statistics for every single Bowl Game, I will consider awarding a prize for the guest contributor whose game result (final score) most closely matched the actual result of the game in real life. In the event of a tie, the tie-breaker would be whichever game had the closest offensive yards for each team in the game compared to the real-life statistics.

If there are any questions, please comment and I will try to answer them; otherwise, sign up for the game you're interested in playing, and good luck!

As a follow-up; if anybody wants a Microsoft Excel template file for the statistics--the same file I used when I compile game statistics each week--I can make that available here.

Great idea Brian; I had a similar idea back in college for our Student TV station but I couldn't get anyone else to buy in. Now I see it on ESPN, for goodness sake. I don't have the time to help out, but if you want to bounce any ideas off me, you know where to find me.

I was wondering how long it would take somebody to go with the RGIII game haha; thanks JB!

LOL, that pick/fumble in the 4th was crazy.

Indeed; in the span of about 2 seconds, I went from "sealed the game!" to "why is he jumping?" to "oh crap" haha. Thank you again for taking two games to stay on track for this weekend, by the way. I am maintaining hope that we might be able to account for all of the bowl games.

Do you want us to restrict to just the highlight videos or is it okay to record the game and do highlights from there?

Whichever is easier, honestly. I'm doing it through the highlight videos because it takes less time with the number of entries I'm doing each week; if you want to record off the Hauppauge, that's even better.

Check out his write-up here: http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2011/12/16/bowl-blitz-invitational-1-2011-famous-idaho-potato-bowl-ohio-utah-state-in-ncaa-football-12/

This entry is a great example of what I'm looking for from guest contributors, just in case anyone is still on the fence about volunteering for games. You don't need to invest multiple hours of your spare time; just do as much as you can.

Thanks psuexv!

A link to the template that you used for the stat boxes would be great. I'm too much of a perfectionist otherwise and I would end up spending a whole day trying to get it to look good to me instead of just fitting the mold of whatever you're already using.

morsdraconis
12-16-2011, 10:27 AM
Also, a suggestion for the table at the beginning of this thread, you may want to show the score of the game as a clickable link to the article written about the game. Makes it easier to run down the list. Then, when the actual bowl games happen, you can put the score for those as a clickable link to the actual ESPN (or Yahoo, or whatever) story written up about the real game.

All good suggestions, mors. I will put you down for the game you mentioned and I will create and link a Google Doc for the stat template this evening when I get out of work. Then I will update the original post with links, which I was actually intending to do tonight anyway.

:LittleCaesars_Bowl: -- :Western_Michigan: at :Purdue:
:Military_Bowl: -- :Toledo: at :Air_Force:
:Armed_Forces_Bowl: -- :BYU: at :Tulsa:

This leaves the next unclaimed game as the :Hawaii_Bowl: between :Nevada: and :Southern_Miss: on December 24th.

Ok, here's the deal. Played the :TCU: vs :Louisiana_Tech: game (AMAZING game), and wrote all the story bits for it, but I didn't have time to write down all the stat stuff for it so I left my 360 on and went to work. Just got back, found out that (of fuckin' course) the damn electricity blinked for like a millisecond and caused it to turn off. :fdown:

My question is, can I kinda fudge some of the numbers (not all of them, just some of them) and keep the work I put in for the story side of it, or would you rather I redid the game and got a completely correct stat box?

If you have a great story, then fudging the numbers is fine by me. After every game I've been playing for this blog, I always worry that my launch PS3 is going to freeze or something before I get all the numbers. Hasn't happened yet, but it's always in the back of my mind.

If you just log the stats you have in the Excel document, I can take it from there to format the numbers for the entry. You can either attach the highlight photos/videos to the email or link me to the EA SPORTS Media World link or on YouTube, whatever works easiest.

If you want to write up a quick author bio to go with the entry also, I'll add that.

If you have a good story to tell about the game, I definitely want that as part of this "project." Send me the statistics and the write-up and I'll go in today and try to recreate a few screenshots from the game. Even if there aren't videos, it'll be fine.

Well, the game won't be played in real life until Wednesday, December 21st; if you want, you could re-play the game and get real stats and I'd be happy to capture highlights. Otherwise, we'll just open it back up to the group and see if somebody else wants to grab it.

Thanks Jeff! I'm still overwhelmed by all of the people who have contributed their time and effort to this project. Definitely means a lot to me.

Some real close results in the Bowl Games so far today, as Chris' Texas A&M score was 1 point off from their actual score and Tommy's Georgia Tech score was also 1 point off from the actual score. Unfortunately, the scores for the opposing teams weren't quite so close, meaning the closest result for the Bowl Blitz Invitational so far remains my playthrough of the 2011 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl; 7 points total.

I would have been in great shape had Al Groh had enough sense to call a proper defense on 4th & long. Instead Utah scores on a fade route to send it into overtime. Before that I was +1 & -3 for the scores.

Today's early Bowl Game action brings a new "clubhouse leader" in the race for whose playthrough in NCAA Football 12 will most closely match the real-life score. psuexv's time with the 2012 Gator Bowl resulted in 19 points for Ohio State and 24 points for Florida; the real-life score had Ohio State finish with 17 and Florida with 24, meaning that the Florida score was perfect and the Ohio State score was only TWO POINTS OFF!

It'll definitely be tough for anybody else to top that unless they manage to get the exact final score of one of the remaining games.

Well, psusnoop just got our first EXACT SCORE from the Chick-fil-A Bowl, as Virginia scored 24 points in both his playthrough in NCAA Football 12 as well as in real-life against Auburn. Unfortunately, Auburn's score was 30 points off :D.

LOL just a bit off on that Auburn score :D

After a busy weekend of entries, today we go back to only a single entry as there is--sadly--only one college Bowl Game on the schedule. At least it's a BCS Bowl Game.

Not to be a negative nancy or anything, but, you ran the ball with WVU WAY too much. Smith is gonna throw the ball 45 times tonight. He's gonna have to cause we can't run the ball worth a shit.

Yeah, it wasn't an entirely "sim" effort on my behalf haha. A good chunk of the rushing yardage for the starting halfback and for the team in general came on that one ridiculous 96-yard touchdown run anyway. The carries always get a bit inflated too because I don't kneel on the ball even if I have it at the end of the game; I just call HB Dives and Power O runs to keep entertained until the clock runs out if I have the final possession and the lead.

Hey now, I was only 11 off of WVU's score; and I got Clemson's score exactly! Haha.

If only I'd thrown more passes; I might've ended up closer to 70.

Some bonus entries today; psuexv put together an Online Dynasty to see if he could replicate the match-up between #2 :Alabama: and #1 :LSU: in the BCS National Championship Game. Against odds, the match-up was set, and here are his write-ups chronicling each team's season:

Alabama's Road to the BCS National Championship (http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2012/01/08/bowl-blitz-invitational-special-alabamas-road-to-the-bcs-national-championship/)

Individual leaders meaning...? I have all of the statistical information, so I can try to put things together if I know what you're looking for. Might take a few days to get it all figured out, but eventually it can be provided.

It'll take a while to put all of the information together and compile it--since the statistics are saved in multiple spreadsheets--but there's no reason I can't get those numbers put together eventually.

It's been a crazy last month+ for my wife and me, but we finally closed on our first house together and we're moving in 100% this coming weekend from our present apartment. That said, at Stat Box Stories this week I've put together a series of entries tracking the top performances in many statistical categories as requested by Eric well over a month ago. Three entries have been posted already, with more to come through the weekend:

Special Teams Statistics Breakdown (http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2012/02/20/bowl-blitz-invitational-special-teams-statistics-breakdown/)

Defensive Statistics Breakdown (http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2012/02/21/bowl-blitz-invitational-defensive-statistics-breakdown/)
