Just like in That Metal Show on VH1 Classic, I think Eric & I should put together our definitive top ten lists for best Pearl Jam songs ever. This arguement stemmed from him telling me Yellow Ledbetter > Dissident, and I told him Yellow Ledbetter may not be in my top ten...so Eric, get your top ten ready...I'll do mine later tonight, so make sure you use spoiler tags. Then we can have a good ol fashioned Tailgate debate on our picks ;)

Looks like we are pretty much in agreement  I missed Go. I have in on my list that I was working on and couldn't find a You Tube link and somehow missed it. It was 7 on my list, so Dissident would technically get dropped I guess.

It was definitely hard to rank them after 4 or 5.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 12:02 PM
Red Mosquito is good too, I'd have to add it to my honorable mention

psuexv
11-15-2011, 12:04 PM
So we have 7 of the same in our top 10s. Not really much to debate I guess.

JBHuskers

I think oversaturation of Corduroy and Better Man turned me off of those. They didn't grow on me over time like the others on my list. I could have expanded to 25 with songs like Tremor Christ, Oceans, Rocking In The Free World Cover....

Yeah it's definitely tough. I kind of thought the same thing as I was typing up the list, that I had too much mainstream stuff. But the songs are good, they've just had so much mainstream stuff. Glad we both put Immortality on there.

JBHuskers
11-15-2011, 12:17 PM
Evenflow and Jeremy may be very mainstream, but revolutionary.

Now Eric, just like on That Metal Show, we have to combine our lists to make the Definitive List.

Starting at the top.

Evenflow vs. Jeremy, they are clear cut #1 and #2, but who's which?

JBHuskers
11-15-2011, 12:27 PM
Evenflow vs. Jeremy, they are clear cut #1 and #2, but who's which?

IMO Evenflow has a better riff, but Jeremy is more powerful lyric-wise, and was made more powerful with a great music video. Evenflow's video was just a live performance. That's why I think Jeremy (1) Evenflow (2)

psuexv
11-15-2011, 12:29 PM
Well I think Jeremy is what really put them on the map. Even though if I remember correctly Even Flow was released first. I say we go with Jeremy.

JBHuskers
11-15-2011, 12:30 PM
Yeah Evenflow was actually second...I think Alive was first.

Okay:

1. Jeremy
2. Evenflow
3.

Has to be Go right?

psuexv
11-15-2011, 12:32 PM
I might say Black or Immortality. I don't think Go is #3.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 12:33 PM
I'd say

3 - Black
4 - Immortality
5- Go
6 - Yellow Ledbetter

JBHuskers
11-15-2011, 01:04 PM
Black, Immortality, and Go all averaged 5.5 rank between us.

I agree with Black at 3 with as epic as the song is.

Go was such a great start to an album that actually followed up a mega debut with something just as solid.

There really isn't a Pearl Jam song like go, where there is with Immortality. So I would agree with Black at 3, but go Go and Immortality are 4 & 5.

1. Jeremy

7. Dissident
8. Alive
9. Elderly Woman

Yep, I agree.

Dissident I have very high. Alive, is probably the 5th best song on the Ten album, but still a powerful one. Elderly Woman is a song all on it's own, and we have all three of these either in or close to the top ten.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 02:19 PM
Now for #10. I have Corduroy very high. But I could see Hail, Hail there or Porch.

JBHuskers
11-15-2011, 02:19 PM
For 10th....here's what I think the battle is.

Corduroy vs. Garden vs. State of Love & Trust

My vote is State of Love & Trust. It was on one of the most iconic sountracks of the 90's (Singles) it is a song that kinda stands out from the rest of the Pearl Jam songs from the early days. You could almost think Corduroy is a derivative of State of Love & Trust. Garden is an epic song, but I think we should end with an upbeat number.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 02:30 PM
State of Love & Trust definitely over Garden. Maybe I'm leaning on Hail, Hail a little too much as it was kind of the only song on that album.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 02:34 PM
The bad thing about Corduroy is I think it got way overplayed as their really wasn't anything that the radio played after that from their next albums and Corduroy was one of the best off of Vitalogy, so they played the shit out of it.

Better Man and Tremor Christ were played a decent amount from that album....Immortality a little bit.

So Corduroy or State?

That's the debate now.

Like I had said earlier, IMO Corduroy is the child of State.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 03:56 PM
IMO Corduroy is suffering in your eyes because they failed to put out the quality of music after Vitalogy so the radio stations hung onto Corduroy(and Better Man)

Don't hate the player, hate the game :D

I disagree, even though it doesn't have a song that stands out in the top 5, No Code as a whole was amazing. Yield and Binaural were blah, but Backspacer is really good, and so Riot Act before it. Especially The Fixer; which I orginally had in my top 10 (7th) on the first draft, but the more and more I heard songs, I kept pushing it down.

psuexv
11-15-2011, 06:31 PM
I'm not saying they were bad, I'm saying that they were not up to par with their early albums, which is to be expected. With that the general public didn't latch onto it leading for earlier tracks to be overplayed, thus burning them out for you.

I dont see how you can even have Jeremy that high. The song is no where near one of their best and then having State of Love that low as well as Black. Just because it has your name in it doesnt make it good JB!! :D

I opened this up going allright some metal and then I see PJ. Whats next Poison? Cinderella?? I keed, I keed. I will weigh in on mine.

1. Black
2. State of Love
3. Porch (Unplugged version)
4. Glorrified G.
5. Eldery Woman
6. Yellowled
7. Hail, Hail
8. I am Mine
9. Once
10. Rearview Mirror

5-10 could be changed around but the top 5 are my picks and wouldnt change. I still remember jamming State of Love on a tape form the Singles soundtrack
