It's fun, but really damn silly, as one would expect.

Can't wait to try it when I get home

Jaymo plays the hell out of it if I remember correctly. If he sees this, he'll sing it's praises I'm sure.

Completed the tutorial tonight, it's pretty fun. It's like SimCity with politics and an economy. The first funny thing I noticed is you can "eliminate" your citizens....I guess being a dictator has it's own set of powers/rules. The in-game music is VERY good too.

So frustrating...

A couple of weeks ago my main PC died on me and immediately afterwards I smelled a burning smell (like burning wires). I tried to see if there was anything particular that smelled burnt but couldn't find it. I waited overnight and in the morning, powered it back up and it went fine. I left it running for the rest of the day without issue but the next day, it crashed again with that same burning smell. Best I could tell it was the power supply but couldn't be sure.

I ordered a nice new power supply and installed it this past week but got nothing... no fan, no lights, nothing, only a half-hearted click that sounds like it's coming from the power supply after I press the power button. So without much time this past week, I had to set it aside and wait to look at it this weekend.

Finally tonight I'm able to break it down and see if I could find it but low & behold, after checking every connection, I still get nothing. I don't know if it's two bad power supplies, a fried CPU/motherboard or possibly even a fried video card. I'm going to take it into a PC shop tomorrow... first time I've ever had to do something like that since typically I can find the problem myself. I'm hoping they can just tell me it's a bad power supply and I can RMA it back to newegg to get a new one.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears but at this point I'm just ready to get it fixed, hopefully without too much cost.

Just saw this thread. The answer is yes, I really enjoy Tropico 4. I also highly encourage anyone to get Modern Times to go with it as dlc. Most of the expansions are rip -offs but Modern Times is a whole new game. The challenges get harder and harder. On my first system my graphics were weak and the game looked pretty bad. On my new kick butt system I run the game on high/ultra and it looks spectacular. Plus I love the soundtrack. It's not as deep as sim city but five hours will pass like five minutes... I highly recommend it.

I don't know enough about cpus to help but on an old system mine had an overheating issue and in the end it warped my cd/dvd drives and damaged the motherboard. It was going to cost close to the same amount as a new cpu cost so I yanked out the hard drive, saved up my pennies and bought a new top of the line system.

Burning wire smell is tough to diagnose though because it could be a connection on the motherboard causing the issue or it could be one of the wires coming from the motherboard to somewhere else causing the issue.

First thing I'd do is take it all apart and see if you can locate the main source of the burning wire smell. Look at the motherboard - any burn spots on it? Smell the inside of the old power supply. If it doesn't have a STRONG burning wire smell, it's highly unlikely it was the original issue.

While it could be a bad power supply followed by a DOA power supply, I actually find it unlikely to be the case. Maybe check the outlet itself. See if it has burn marks on it. Try plugging it into a different outlet. Hell, make sure it didn't burn up your powerstrip. There are plenty of things that could be causing the burning wire smell so I'd be thorough before I'd just take it to a PC Repair Shop (if they're anything like ones that I've been to before, they know less about PCs than I do).

Above all else, I can tell you it's definitely not the video card, RAM, or fried CPU. All three wouldn't prevent the powersupply from coming on. The video card would just prevent any visuals and RAM and CPU would cause the onboard speaker to make some interesting noises but otherwise allow the powersupply to come on.

Yeah, I've made sure to test multiple outlets, multiple power cables, etc. I haven't checked for burn marks yet but I'll probably do that sometime tomorrow. I've ripped this thing apart several times though, only thing I haven't done is pulled the mobo from the case; I suppose that's the next step.

I did find a way to test the power supply to see if it's giving off any kind of power though by "jumpering" the motherboard cable with a paper clip... it was on Corsair's official youtube so it seemed legit enough. Sure enough, both power supplies at least start it's own fan up so that tells me either the case/switch is dead (unlikely) or the motherboard is fried.

As far as taking it into a shop, there is one that I've recommended to people before and they've had good results. I'm going to go into it though telling them that I just want to find out the problem... test the power supply (there is a specific tool to test power supplies), test the motherboard (use a different CPU), test the CPU (put the CPU in a different system), just tell me what fails. That should be easy enough for anyone with spare parts laying around, unfortunately I threw out a bunch of old equipment not too long ago.

I think I've determined the problem... notice the burnt chip just below the center of the image. I'll be ordering a new mobo.

I'm able to run the Tropico 4 Collectors Bundle with all the settings maxed out. I really like the sound track. Until I hear better things for SimCity 5, this will keep me busy enough. Plus with the new Tiger Woods coming out....man on man it's GAME TIME! :)

Yup. Figured it was the mobo causing the issue. Sucks to have bought a new power supply for nothing though an upgrade is never a bad thing. :)

Hope you have some spare thermaltake laying around, otherwise you might want to buy more of that as well.

Yeah, I probably needed a new power supply anyway. The one I had was only 600 watts and the new one is 750... I was probably pushing the capacity of what it should be anyway.

Yeah, I've got a kit for cleaning thermal paste and also applying new. Now comes the hard part... waiting until tomorrow for it to arrive.

PC is now back up & running... nice to get 100% confirmation that it was the motherboard. I decided I'd take the opportunity to go ahead and finally install my SSD since I was pretty much going to need to do a fresh Windows install anyway. I now have 4 storage drives:

90GB SSD - Windows
250GB Velociraptor - Programs/My Documents
1TB Samsung - Games (Steam, Origin, etc.)
3TB Seagate - Media (movies, music, pictures, etc.)

Yeah, while vanilla Civ V is playable, it does need the expansions to be truly good. But it is a very fun game. A bit more simplified and not quite as wide open maps as Civ IV, but still very fun, with some improvements that make for much better game play, for example, no more death stacks that enable you to throw dozens of units at a city at once, now each plot of the map can only be occupied by a single army, so you've got to better plan out your attacks when going to war with another leader.

Unless you're dying for a new game right now, I would just based on the fact that the summer sale is guaranteed to have it in it (and it's only a month to a month and half away).

Has anyone messed with Links 2003 for the PC? If so any pros vs cons?

They have a deal going where you can purchase the full game and all 47 addon courses for $29.95

http://www.linkscountryclub.com/proshop

Seems like it's a good deal. Going to try the demo.

EDIT: I tried the demo version on my new PC it's running Windows 7 64 bit and it keeps giving me an error, when I searched this error it means the software I'm trying to run is not compatible with a 64-bit op system.

So I installed it on this PC runnings windows Vista and it seems to work. It looks like a nice golf game.

Many moons ago, then Links 2004 hit on the Xbox and static golf kinda died for me. If you decide to go this route or just get the game by itself, head over at another site - Links Corner - you have access to just over 2,000 user made course, many of them real courses (Augusta, Bethpage, Pinehurst 2, etc, etc, that can all be downloaded for free.

It's a decent game with HUGE maps. I owned Cities xl 9 and 11 (but not the 2012 version). I love the large cities but it is missing a lot of features that SimCity has (eg trains, etc.). However, for $4.99 I would pick it up. Be warned though that there is a HUGE memory leak issue once your cities hit one million and the lag, especially at night is a real killer.

For anyone that's still on the fence about Civ 5, there's a free-to-play weekend on Steam this weekend.

Very good game. It eats time, which is a good thing on a laptop in a plane or airport

Any opinion on endless Space for 66% off?

I found this site that "tracks" games sales prices, if this holds true this is the most it has been on sale.

I have ANNO 2070 honestly I can't get past the beginning to tell you anything about it, its pretty boring at the beginning....maybe ill fire it up this weekend and let you know, I would say hold off it will go back on sale during the summer sale.

I liked the other ANNO games but something about this one I cant seem to get my mind around.

As far as when it starts I have no idea I think last year it was around the 12th-ish

Yeah, the endgame has never been the greatest part of the game. All you can do is research future tech and sit there throwing troops away against equal troops of other nations. It just slows down and you sit there trading bits of land here and there, forced to throw away entire armies or nuke people just to gain the edge.

So definitely looking forward to Brave New World and what it can and will do for the endgame.

Yeah, I've played the hell out of Civ IV and Civ V, so I've experienced the endgame a lot.

And actually, to add to my previous post, there are two ways it has always ended for me.

You and the AI manage to end up equal in troops, and sit there throwing troops away against equal troops of other nations in a nonstop battle of attrition. Brings to mind thoughts of the never ending human meatshields of Russia on the eastern front in World War II. It just slows down and you sit there trading bits of land here and there, forced to throw away entire armies or nuke people just to gain the edge. Most times, the only way to win at that point of a game is actually nuking people. Nuke the hell out of them to gain an edge and let it carry you to a win.

Then there's the second way it has ended for me, and that is I end up jumping out to a large lead over the AI in research and military, thus I can always keep the edge on them through the length of the entire game, so when I reach the endgame, I have armies that are superior by at least a research/advancement generation or two, and have troops by the hundreds of units, as opposed to AI nations that have maybe a couple dozen cavalry to go up against my tanks. So when I hit the endgame, it's just one giant rape-fest as I steamroll every AI in the game on my way to a victory. And generally I can only play with conquest/domination as the method of victory because Science, Technology, Diplomacy and the other ways of victory end up being too easy to achieve and too simple to beat the AI with.

So I'm definitely hoping the additions that are coming in Brave New World will help to expand on the endgame and lead to a better game during that time, help keep it more interesting and make it more complex instead of either steamrolling the AIs or nuking them all to hell to stop the never ending wars of attrition and win the game.

06-30-2013, 09:44 AM
Smooth, reading your post reminds me of Civ III. One night way back when I had an "epic" battle that last over five hours. Both the AI and myself did a war of attrition and at the end one city fell but was recaptured by the AI. For the next few nights it was non stop back and forth war declarations between myself and the AI bit in the end nothing happened. Finally I said forget and began to build the space station in order to win socially/culturally... which I did.

The end game of the Civ series has always been the same so anything that will improve that gets my vote. I look forward to your impressions of Brave New World.

Exactly. :D

That is how it keeps ending up for me. I either roll the AI because I'm technologically, and thus militarily, superior to them, or we sit there in a war of attrition sending wave after wave of troops to their deaths as we battle over the same city or same piece of land. When it gets to that point, the only way to win is either do what you did and say to hell with it and go after a cultural victory (or some other victory) or bring out the nukes, blow the world all to hell and then roll the AI because you now possess the military advantage.

While going for the victories through building the space station or winning via vote at the UN are nice and can be a good chance of pace, I've found it to be way too easy to achieve those victories. So I usually settle for a conquest victory as at least that way I have to win on the field of battle instead of winning by having my dozen cities keep pumping out rocket/space station parts.

I still love the Civilization series and will continue to play the hell out of it for years to come, but I definitely hope Brave New World overhauls the endgame years and makes it fresh, fun and different every time you play.

I actually haven't played it too much since finally getting Gods and Kings. When I play, I try to do it in one sitting so I usually only play when I have a large number of free hours I can dedicate to it. Since my free time hasn't allowed too much for playing Civ V, I've only gotten to play it sparingly since I got the G&K expansion.

I still don't understand how all this trading card stuff works. I've been looking over it the past several minutes trying to figure out how to get the Summer Getaway Badge, and I'm just as confused now as I was when I began reading about it. And the wait was only a couple hours. For the next 8 hours, as part of the Flash Sales, Civ V is 75% off. Gold Edition is 75% off. The brand new Brave New World, just released on Tuesday, is 33% off. All of the rest of the DLC is either 50% off or 75% off.

For 33% off just three days after it was released, I think I'm gonna snag Brave New World right now for $20.99. Save $9 off the full price, and I doubt we'll see much more than 33% off anytime in the near future, especially since it's still only three days old.

I don't really get it, either, to be honest. It looks like if you keep buying games and voting for new deals, you can get all the necessary cards for the badge yourself. However, on games, each one only has 3 or 4 cards you get yourself and then you have to trade/buy others to complete the set. Doesn't make much sense to me.

It's REALLY good, but pretty short. I'd be willing to bet, with a decent amount of luck, you could beat it in ~6 hours or so. It's very much like Binding of Isaac though in that to unlock everything, you'd need to spend far more hours playing it than that.

And out of those, I can only AA on my PC. I would need the Playstation Now app for PS3 when it comes out to play Planetside 2 because my PC just isn't powerful enough (I know having tried to play MANY times)

In fact, dare I say but I believe AA & PS2 are the only really formidable PC games out there. The rest are just CRAP unless you're talking retro or kiddie games. Thats why there aren't that many PC gamers out there when compared to the number of console gamers (Nintendo Wii probably has more gamers than the PC does)

This is the most annoying practice going right now on PC, I think alot of them are actually finished games they just want that "window" to say its in alpha/beta in case something comes up and they have to make a change.

There are a few who are taking things from the community and actually applying to the game but I have run across a few where the devs have pretty much called it quits.

Any warfare?

No, the dev. purposely decided to go with no warfare. There are disease outbreaks, crop failures etc. but the whole focus is to try and create a community. People freeze in the winter, starvation is an issue etc. but there is zero combat. A big portion of the game is micro-management of what your settlers are doing. After about 15 hours I have my largest community at 132 adults 19 students and 24 kids. It's very time consuming.

I ended up caving and buying Europa Universalis IV. I have to admit that I am really liking it. I could have waited for a cheaper price but honestly I am glad I did buy it. I have put in close to 30 hours and we are only up to 1502c.e. Playing as Burgundy is tough. The English hate me; the French hate me; Munster hates me... you get the trend here. I had a strong ally in Scotland... and then they were conquered. I'm not to proud to admit I have used a cheat code or two just to stay alive.

Currently I am trying to get into the exploration game but it's not going well. I have a strong military and am very advanced but a lot of people see me as a rival because of the trade node in Antwerpen that control. As a result I have a lot of wars and not a lot of friends.

The game is a lot of fun but highly frustrating at the same time. Easily I am heading to 100+ hours by the summer.

I've played the first one, it comes with the Venice upgrade pack which is more levels and maps. I've played the first for about 3 hours and it's really fun, it has the fun of building like Sim City but also has the other islands asking for trade routes, supplies, etc...

The graphics and music are really good too!

Can anyone recommend a good strategy game where you have to build up resources then fight? The one that "looks" really good is Citadels, however it seemed to get horrible reviews. I like the idea behind the game but people say it freezes up, locks up, or just shuts down so I don't want to waste my time or money on it. It does look like what I'm looking for though.

http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/citadels

Can anyone suggest something similar? I like the idea of having to collect things, build up an army sustain them and then fight with them. Would this be something like Age of Empires? If so, would you recommend Age of Empires II HD or III? I've read pros and cons of each version, they both seem good and bad in different ways.

I'm looking for something that's either old-timey, i.e. medieval up to WWII or even present day, I'm not really interested in futuristic stuff or fighting vs aliens stuff so I know I wouldn't enjoy the genre that is futuristic.

Thanks for any tips/suggestions.

The question becomes do you want bases or not bases?? The days of base building are gone unfortunately ( as I loved C & C 3). For what I think you are asking Age of Empires is your best bet....... The total war series is pretty good but its a mix of 4x and RTS. Those kinda games are few and far between now which is unfortunate...if you want to just collect resources and fight you have the Wargame series.

I made a pretty easy transition from Age of empires II into total war series, were personally I like total war the most but they kinda aren't comparable.

I haven't played the HD version or III so I can't help you there.

I think I want bases, I'd like to build a headquarters area or a fort where the troops/fighters originate from then I sent them out to battle.

I have Civ V and I really enjoy it but the only thing con that I don't care for is the turn base. I'm not sure what it's called, but similar to Sim City, you just play and play, no waiting for the CPU or opponent to take a turn.

It seemed like in the videos I've watched on Citadel was what I'm looking for, unfortunately it has such horrible reviews I don't want to take the risk. I can understand some reviews not being favorable or people like or dislike a game but that one seemed to get a huge F, across the board it seemed like people wanted to give it a 0 our of 10, and they all say not to waste your money. That's disappointing b/c it looks great.

Has anyone played Perfect Golf for PC? It's $19.99 over at Steam and it looks pretty nice. Just wondered if anyone has given it a shot?

Its been on my radar for sometime now, but since I bought golf club I think I have made my golf game quota for the year or so...:) I am seeing alot of mixed reviews on it, most seem to like it but the motion hitting seems to be giving alot of people some trouble.

There is a new Cities XXL coming out tomorrow, we will see if it a big let down like Sim City was, I went ahead and bought it since I had 20.00 left in my account from the summer/winter sale that I didnt use.

I am fully expecting it to be like the others they just fixed the "memeory leak" issue, though I didnt think the other ones were terrible they just got real laggy.

Cities skylines looks promising though, if nothing else its appears to be a pretty game.

So I talk with a bunch of people all the time (being a service plumber) I've noticed one thing in general about society...if you un-plugged the internet there would be A LOT of people hurting, lost and wouldn't have a clue what to do. This guy would be number 1.

He needs to put that much effect, energy and dedication into working out, he'd be an animal if he could apply himself in the gym like he can yelling and spitting into his mic.

It's a video game...really....it's not the end of the world.

Back to the online world, when I walk through places, i.e. the Austin Airport it's amazing how 90%+ of the people are plugged into their phones, laptops etc...no one makes eye contact, no one speaks...if the internet or their data plans went down those people would be like lost sheep.

We also notice it in sports, when I started as an usher at Kyle Field and prior, when I was a student it was freaking LOUD! Now not so much, the entire student body is on their phones, they are surfing the web, chatting, posting on FB or something other than yelling at the game...it's disappointing. Look on T.V. when they show the crowd, at pretty much any sporting event, look at home many of the people are on their phones.

my 2 cents.

After playing XXL a little bit, it is pretty much what I expected its XL with some updates but not many. Is it terrible...nope actually if your main goal is making a pretty city its pretty good, if you want something along the line of SimCity when population management is equally as important then you wont like the game.

I really don' t get why he is so popular actually I think its irritating but whatever...differences make the world go round.

People are truly addicted to the internet its kinda sad actually, even when I have my days at work when its slow I run out of stuff to look for pretty fast because I don't care about celebrity news, I don't want to read out the worlds problems ( mostly because of agenda biases), so if I am not looking for anything specific I don't actually look for long.

It does get him users and money so I give him that, even if I don't really understand why.

I have spent about an hour or two on it. It's definitely cool if you like these type of survival games where you gotta loot, scavenge, and figure out how to put shit together.

I'm still on my first playthrough and haven't died yet. Made it to day two, food was my biggest worry at first so I had to set sail on my life raft with a shark knocking me off in the dark to get to another island that had a lot of crabs I could kill for food. I thought dropping the crabs on the campfire would cook them, but they still make you sick after eating a few in a row LOL. I need to look that up how to cook.

Sounds pretty cool.

Yeah I like games like that, especially with that particular setting/objective.

Wanted something with multiplayer too but unsure if my computer here at work can handle H1Z1. All but my graphics is up to spec

Thanks, never used that tool before..then again I don't game on PC usually.

Says video card meets minimum requirements but says upgrade suggested.

Odd because my card has dedicated ram of 1.0 GB, the minimum the game says is 512 MB lol. Of course I know that is under the 2 GB for reccomended.

Speaking of which found a bunch of The Sims games other day packing stuff up. Didn't know I had all of those editions of it lol

Just bought a new video card, EVGA GeForce GTX 960 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SC6HAS4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00SC6HAS4&linkCode=as2&tag=thegamtai-20&linkId=AMSSBMMANXG2JFXQ), a nice upgrade from my 460. I don't play PC games very often anymore but the one thing this does make me want to do is play Fallout 3 since I haven't played it in so long.

Anyone else picking up Cities Skylines when it drops on March 10th??? I pre-ordered last week to get some of the extra stuff. The game looks very sim cityish except that it's way bigger.

Big city limits and workshop support so people can add in buildings or other mods.. ....I think they are basically using the same engine.
