I was one the biggest horror movie geeks in my youth but I grew older and lost interest. Yet every October I get to relive some of the great horror movies from my past a few new ones to boot.

My Top 5 Horror Movies

1. Halloween (1978 version with Jamie Lee Curtis)
2. The Shining
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street
4. The Exorcist
5. Halloween II

Honorable Mention - Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Friday the 13th 1 & 2, Nosferatu, When a Stranger Calls (only for the - it's coming from your upstairs bedroom scene), Phantasm and any more I could not think of off the top of my head.

My Bottom 5

1. Anything from Rob Zombie, the worthless twat who throws his ungifted wife in everything he does. This man almost made me start to hate the song "Freebird."
2. Remakes from the past few years. Crap with the exception of The Hills Have Eyes and Last House on the Left remakes.
3. Halloween 3
4. Freddy vs Jason. Should have been Michael vs Jason and still would have ended in the bottom 5.
5. The Human Centipede - Most of the stuff on Amazon Prime Instant video is old and crappy but this is new and really crappy, good job Amazon. Preferred the South Park spoof to the actual movie.

Let's discuss some horror movies. Unless it is Rob Zombie. :P

For the longest time, my favorite Nightmare on Elm Street was 3: Dream Warriors. Not sure if that ranking would change today or not. 1 was a close 2nd.

Bumping this up since it did so well last year. :fp: October is back so let's talk horror movies!

Watched The Cabin in the Woods last night. It had quite the critical acclaim.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_cabin_in_the_woods/

The name Joss Wheadon must inspire people to rate movies based on their love of Firefly, Buffy, etc. His fanbase is one of the most annoying out there, just look at the comments on any of those critical of this move. The movie was crap. A good 45 minutes of boredom before any real action starts. Then when the action starts it is nothing scary, just a bunch of blood on the screen and at a few points I thought Tony Shalub (Thirteen Ghosts) was going to pop out to say hello, this kinda looks familiar. Instead we get Sigourney Weaver explaining away the horrible concept of this film. I know it was some kind of Scream wannabe trying to trick you into spending more than 5 minutes on if this was a spoof or salute to the genre. Been there done that, more stabbing and slashing, less smarmy asshole who over-thinks the whole movie.

It pretty much rivals when The Halloween series threw out the notion that Michael Meyers was selected by a cult of people to be the one who sacrifices people due to some mythical thing called the Thorn.

Two thumbs way down.

:smh:

You came into that movie thinking it was a horror movie instead of what it is (a GREAT jab at the entire thing).

I agree. I think most of John Carpenter's movies are HIGHLY underrated.

Ghosts of Mars, In the Mouth of Madness, They Live, Prince of Darkness, Big Trouble in Little China, Christine, The Thing, Escape from New York, The Fog, are all underrated.

Assault on Precinct 13 was pretty bad though.

Based on your logic Dracula, Nosferatu and others are not horror movies because they are vampire movies? It is classified as a horror film, won awards as a horror film and is on numerous top horror movie lists, including horror related sites like Fangoria and Bloody Disgusting.

Seriously, I am defending a Longhorn fan on Red Rivalry week, that is how wrong you are in your assessment. Might have to start calling Mors "Ram Jr" for some of this fuzzy logic.

It's not a horror movie. It's more of a drama than anything. Have you actually SEEN the movie? It's not a horror movie. It's a drama wrapped in a vampire movie.

I have seen the Swedish version of the movie "Let the right one in" with subtitles and the American version "Let me in."

As for if it is horror or not...

I am not going to argue with you any more on the subject.

That time of year again. If anyone has some recommendations of movies you have seen lately, post em here. I do not have Netflix but I will post Amazon Prime recommendations.

Marlowe mentioned The Descent which I loved and the sequel was not bad, both were free at the time I saw them (Amazon).

I just watched a B Flick called Thankskilling that fell under the, "So bad and cheesy it was a blast." There was no Thankskilling 2 as it is part of the plot to Thankskilling 3 and while available for free at Amazon, should not be viewed.

Trying to rack my brain on any good movies that released this past year or so, none were great but a few were tolerable:

Evil Dead - Remake, did little for me but had some good parts.
Would you Rather? - Sasha Grey alert, she is still trying to go mainstream. Interesting premise, a couple scenes will make you twitch.
I spit on your Grave 2 - If you like revenge movies it might be worth a look. I found it okay but loved the original and remake of the first.
Sinister - Slow paced in a few sections but had a few scares.
The Lords of Salem - Just kidding, Rob Zombie needs to stick to music and his wife needs to stick to being Rob Zombie's wife.

People seem to like the two VHS movies, I feel asleep watching the second one. There is plenty of horror to watch on Prime, unfortunately there is too much really old crap. They thrown in a few new movies every so often (Jugface and Hayride come to mind) but neither were worth the time. On the pay side there are just a ton of indie horror films that suck like 95% of the time.

The first two Halloween movies are my favorites. I hate the two Rob Zombie Halloween films with a passion. Having Michael be a lumbering giant with a hoodie on made no sense at all but that's Rob for you. I also like the first couple of Nightmare on Elm Street films before they began to be too campy and silly.

I watched Ils a few nights ago. It was a decent addition to the home invasion genre that seems to be popular recently. Granted it was filmed in 2006. Might look for it under the title Them.

Haven't watched much recent horror.

Against my better senses I started watching this. Saw a bunch of Amazon reviews about how scary it is (still waiting for it) but so far it feels like someone just twisted around all the parts of the Amytiville Horror and took out the good stuff. Fitting since it is based on the Warren's ( I was aware of their history in this case and the Amytiville case). Still only halfway in but as I have said paranormal movies tend to do little for me. Sinster and The Fog are the rare exceptions over the past few years.

How this movie should have ended and remember I am not even half done with the film.

Dog won't go in house, something is seriously creepy here. Ooh, hidden cellar. Okay we stay the night, wake up, Dog is dead and all the clocks have stopped at the same time. Time to GTFO, THE END.
