$99 for the 16GB and $149 for the 32GB

I'm trying to get a 16GB, but all major retailers are sold out. :D

This is quite the scavenger hunt...just too bad I was late to the party.

Rumor is Amazon could be getting prepared to enter the fire sale late tonight. Someone tweeted HP may have servers back online at 4:30 central, but both are pure speculation at this point. It seems like there is a HUGE stock of these tablets that didn't sell, so people who do want to pay $99 for one may still be able to early this coming week.

Radio Shack in Canada (the Source by CC) already dropped the price and sold out of everything yesterday. Even my wife was hunting for one at $99. We never even considered getting a tablet but at $99 it's hard to pass up.

:D okay if Amazon themselves goes $99 on the 16GB finally, I might get that in case this other deal doesn't pan out. Worst case scenario is I have two and can sell one for $220 on eBay (that's what they're going for usually).

Put it this way. This tablet just came out on July 1st. Originally $500 .... now $99. A nice price to get into it to see what tablet computing is all about. That is why I bought one two.

Why is every one so bananas over this thing? As JB said, it's essentially the $400 discount plus all of the possibilities. If/when someone is able to get Android on this thing, it will be absolutely awesome and would no longer be considered "obsolete". Even if no one is ever able to do that, HP is still developing the WebOS software, they're just getting out of the hardware business, so it still wouldn't be obsolete.

If you want a tablet, it's a hell of a deal. If you want an alarm clock that can play music and videos, it's a hell of a deal.

oweb26

I already have a tablet, I went ahead and ordered it, i think your previous post summed it up for me, if I don't like (or she doesn't want it) it I will sell it on Ebay (or here if anyone wants it). Hopefully someone roots and android OS to be installed on the thing.

Best thing to do is tell him to sign up for HP's e-mail notification for when they're back in stock, because it sounds like they should have a good deal of them once retailers send their inventory back, and I'm sure HP has stashed inventory in various warehouses as well....

So I'm starting to get annoyed that I have roughly $500 tied up in pre-authorizations for these things yet I'm highly unlikely to get any of them. I've pretty much succumbed to the fact that I'm not going to get one... and if I do it will be at least at a small premium (which would be fine).

Mashable: HP’s TouchPad May Be Resurrected (http://mashable.com/2011/08/30/hp-touchpad-second-life/)

The TouchPad, HP’s ill-fated tablet PC, may have a second life after all.

The head of HP’s soon-to-be-spun-off Personal Systems Group, Todd Bradley, told Reuters the new company could resurrect the TouchPad. “Tablet computing is a segment of the market that’s relevant, absolutely,” Bradley said.

Meanwhile, HP is planning an “over-the-air” update to the TouchPad to increase its functionality, according to CNET. HP reps couldn’t be reached for comment at press time.

HP cut the price of the TouchPad from $500 to $99 earlier this month, after announcing it was pulling the plug on the product. Since then, the item has been hard to find, as customers rushed to get their hands on the discounted tablet.

The new demand prompted Mark Budgell, HP’s PR Manager for Social Media Strategy, to address the issue in a blog post Monday. Budgell said he had no information about whether more TouchPads will become available. “We will have more information available in the next few days about whether or not more will be available and if so, what the details will be about the situation,” he wrote.

Adding to the suspense, HP turned off notifications announcing if new TouchPads become available.

So HP has confirmed that they are actually PRODUCING one last batch to try to meet the demand. They keep repeating the phrase "limited quantities" and you can no longer sign up for the e-mail notifications (luckily I got my work and home e-mails registered so I don't miss it).

No, if you read my last post, they're making one last run in production. It's not for already ordered items. Those are already made and set to ship this week.

JBHuskers
08-30-2011, 03:27 PM
What is odd is they no longer have a sign up option to be notified, so I'm wondering if you may need to have an invite from the e-mail notification to even buy one, and they're trying to fill the demand of those who signed up for a notification. Or it is just pure coincidence that you can't sign up to be notified anymore. Could be either or.

Got an update from Cost Central just now:

We would like to thank you for your order of an HP Touchpad. We wanted to provide everyone with a recap of events and an update on the current status.

As you may be aware, CostCentral as well as many other online retailers, had tens of thousands of HP Touchpads reserved at HP and their distributors, ready for shipment. Late Sunday night we received orders for over ten thousand Touchpads in just a few hours. On Monday morning when we arrived, we discovered that HP had decided to withhold the stock reserved for us and told our distributors to hold all the stock in their warehouses.

HP then began releasing stock to us in increments. At first a few thousand TouchPads and then releasing stock less frequently and in smaller and smaller quantities. This is why we are not able to say or estimate when we will be able to ship your order. We have been, and currently are, continuing to ship HP Touchpad orders as we receive our stock from HP.

We are continuing to pressure HP to release our stock that was reserved and promised to us. Once we receive more information from HP, we will share this with all our customers.

Your order will not be charged until it is ready for shipment and if you wish to cancel your order you may click on this link to cancel any time prior to shipment.

Common Questions and Answers:

Q: If I call or email your customer service can they provide additional information?
A: Unfortunately no. When HP actually provides us with additional information we will notify customers.

Q: Where am I in 'line?'
A: Customer service is unable to tell you were you are in the queue.

Q: Can you tell me when I will receive my order, even an estimate?
A: Since HP can't tell us when or how many Touchpads we will receive, we cannot provide an ETA on your order.

Q: When I placed my order, your website indicated you had xxxx number in stock, was that true?
A: Yes. We had over 10000 reserved and ready for shipment. HP instructed their warehouse and our distributor's warehouse to hold stock.

Best Buy is going to start selling them again on Nov 1. But you have to buy another computer as well

HP TouchPad Offer FAQs

What are the offer details?
Starting November 1, 2011 on BestBuy.com® and November 4, 2011 in Best Buy® stores, purchase any HP or Compaq laptop, desktop, or all-in-one computer and qualify to purchase the $599.99 32GB HP TouchPad for $149.99.

What HP TouchPad models will be available?
This offer is only available on the 32GB model.

How long will this offer last?
This is a spot buy of a limited release of TouchPads by HP. These units are first come, first serve and when they're gone, they're gone.

Can I buy just the TouchPad?
To get the promotional pricing of $149.99, the TouchPad must be purchased in conjunction with an HP or Compaq laptop, desktop or all-in-one. If a customer wants to buy just the TouchPad, they will pay $599.99.

What accessories will be available?
We will not have any HP-branded accessories for sale but will have limited quantities of 3rd party cases and sleeves.

What is the return and exchange policy?
This offer qualifies for Best Buy's standard 14-day return policy with the following addendums:

The return must be a complete return of the bundle. If the customer wants to keep the TouchPad, they must pay the difference with the stand-alone pricing ($450).
If there are any issues with the TouchPad, the customer will need to fulfill service through HP TouchPad service and technical support at HP's service number (877-426-3777).

:fp:

We wanted to provide an update on the current status of the HP Touchpad situation. As you may be aware, or have seen on news reports, HP has recently supplied Touchpad stock to Best Buy (tm) to use in a "buy an HP computer and you can purchase a Touchpad at the fire sale price" promotion. Consequently, HP has decided to not provide us with any additional stock that was being held and promised, for our customers who have been waiting.

For this reason, we will be forced to cancel the remaining unfulfilled orders. We truly apologize for this unfortunate set of circumstances and want to thank you for your patience and understanding these past weeks. HP's decision puts us all at a disadvantage.

We hate to disappoint customers and not being able to fill the remaining orders disappoints us as well. If circumstances should change and stock were to become available, we will immediately contact customers to see if they would be interested in having their order reinstated.

In addition, we have placed a $15 CostCentral.com credit on your account towards a future purchase, which is available now and has no expiration date because of this inconvenience. It will appear automatically when logged into your account and you add an item valued at $15 or more to your cart.

We do appreciate your business and your patience during this trying situation.

Before I went with the new iPad, I was seriously considering the Asus Transformer Prime, but my God, they are so damn hard to find. Best Buy was out of stock in store and online, no Gamestop stores had them around me, and Amazon didn't have any in stock, either. There were 3rd party sellers on Amazon and of course eBay, but they were charging double the retail price. NewEgg had one and of course they botched my order and someone else got it.

If you do end up getting it, let me know how you like it. The main draw for me with the Prime was how you could attach a keyboard to it and basically turn it into a netbook. I ended up getting something similar for my iPad, but I don't think it has the same integration that the keyboard for the Transformer Prime does.

I will be getting the transformer Prime in a couple of months or so. I have a co-worker who has it and I have had extensive time to play around with and I love it!!!

I currently have the Acer Iconia A500 which I have had for a little over a year, the main reason I liked it is now the main reason I want another one. Go figure.

This will probably turn into a very nice alarm clock and the bedroom internet surfer if you will. My wife loves to use it so it will mostly be in the bedroom to do random google searches.

After a lot of talk about it it's official.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304058404577492760881761278.html

During a presentation at the Internet search company's annual developer conference, Google said its tablet features a seven-inch screen and camera, and is designed to display books and other media available on Google's Play service.

The tablet is "an ideal device for reading books," Google engineering director Chris Yerga said during a demonstration. The Nexus 7 will be available for $199, significantly less than the cheapest-available Apple Inc.'s AAPL +0.10% iPad tablet and on par with Amazon's Kindle Fire device.

The Google tablet is available for order on Google Play and will ship in mid-July, Google says.

The tablet runs on a new version of Google's Android software, dubbed Jelly Bean. That software will be also be released starting in the middle of next month, the company said.

Google demonstrated new features available in the software such as voice-activated typing on a device and audio responses to verbal Internet searches.

Google says some 400 million Android devices now have been activated. The new release of the software is "the fastest and smoothest version of Android yet," Google Android Product Management Director Hugo Barra said.

Google develops Android according to an open-source model that makes use of outside engineering and makes the technology available for free to device makers.

Thanks to its recent purchase of device maker and long-time Android partner Motorola Mobility, Google is expected to take a more hands-on approach to tailoring its software to related hardware.

Apple long has used a model that includes both in-house software and hardware engineering in tandem, as it has developed its popular iPad.

According to data from IDC, Apple held a 68% share of the worldwide tablet market in the first quarter of this year, well ahead of Samsung Electronics Co. 005930.SE +2.46% and Amazon.com--each of which have developed their tablets on Google's Android software.
