Coaching Staff
Head Coach --Chuck Long
Chuck Long transitioned to a career as a football coach. He returned to his alma mater in 1995, serving as Iowa's defensive backs coach. Though Long had no coaching experience and had played on the offensive side of the ball for his entire career, he quickly became a respected defensive coach. In his three seasons coaching defensive backs from 1995–1997, Iowa posted a 24–12 record and advanced to a bowl game all three years. Iowa led the nation in interceptions returned for touchdowns in 1995, while the 1997 squad led the Big Ten in interceptions.
Long switched to coaching Iowa's quarterbacks and special teams in 1998. After the 1998 season, Iowa coach Hayden Fry retired, and though Long was considered for the job, Fry was ultimately succeeded by Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz retained Long from Fry's staff, and Long served Ferentz in the same capacity for the 1999 season.
After five seasons coaching at Iowa, Long left the Hawkeyes to become the quarterbacks coach at Oklahoma. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and Long were teammates on Iowa's 1982 Rose Bowl team. Long was an assistant on the Oklahoma team that claimed the 2000 Bowl Championship Series national title. He coached quarterback Josh Heupel to a second place finish in the Heisman Trophy balloting that year.
After the 2001 season, Long was promoted to Oklahoma's offensive coordinator position. Oklahoma won the Rose Bowl following the 2002 season, and in 2003, the Sooners set a Big 12 Conference record by averaging 51.5 points per game.
In 2004, Long was named as a finalist for the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach. He was an assistant coach at Oklahoma for six seasons, including four as an offensive coordinator, and Oklahoma compiled a 67–11 record during his time there.
After the 2005 season, Long landed his first head coaching position when he was hired as the 16th head football coach at San Diego State University. Long had a record of 9–27 in three seasons as SDSU's head coach. On November 23, 2008, college president Stephen Weber announced that Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel had dismissed Long prior to the final game of the season. Coach Long finished his third season only winning 2 out of 12 games, including the one conference win on his final night. San Diego State finished the 2008 season with a 2–10 record, the first and only ten-loss season in school history.[2] Long also had the distinction of having his team lose two games to Division 1-AA Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (in his first and third seasons with the Aztecs, respectively).
Offensive Coordinator --David Reaves
Reaves comes to New Mexico after spending the 2009 season at Tennessee. While in Knoxville, Reaves led a passing game that accounted for 2,942 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Prior to his stint at Tennessee, he spent most of this decade at South Carolina, where he served under head coaching legends Holtz and Spurrier.
Reaves coached seven seasons for the Gamecocks, including the first two as a graduate assistant. After one year as defensive backs coach under Holtz and two seasons assisting Spurrier in coaching the Gamecock quarterbacks, Reaves was handed the full-time quarterback coaching duties in the spring of 2007.
In addition, Reaves was given the duties beginning in 2006 of recruiting coordinator. He solidified his reputation as one of the top young recruiters in college football when the 2007 Gamecock signees formed a consensus top-10 class and were regarded as the most highly touted recruiting class in school history. Following the February signing day, Reaves was selected as one of the top 25 recruiters in the country by Rivals.com.
In 2007, the Gamecocks threw for more than 3,000 yards and averaged 258.2 yards per game through the air with senior Blake Mitchell and redshirt freshman Chris Smelley sharing time under center. In 2006, the South Carolina quarterbacks, primarily Blake Mitchell and Syvelle Newton, combined to throw for 3,259 yards, an average of 250.7 yards per game. In 2005, Reaves assisted with the development of quarterback Blake Mitchell, who threw for 2,370 yards, the seventh-highest single season total in school history.
Defensive Coordinator --George Barlow
George Barlow begins his third season as UNM's assistant head coach and first year as defensive coordinator. He was in charge of the Lobo secondary in 2009-10.
In 2010, junior safety Bubba Forrest registered a 100-tackle season with two interceptions while earning honorable mention all-conference honors.
Now in his 21st season as a collegiate assistant, Barlow came to UNM after 10 seasons at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator/safeties coach at JMU for five seasons from 2004-08. He coached the defensive line in 2002-03 and running backs from 1999-2001.
The Dukes spent most of the 2008 season as the No. 1 team in the Football Championship Subdivision. They finished 12-2, falling to Montana in the national semifinals.
Barlow's 2008 defense ranked among the top-25 in the FCS in sacks (34) and total defense (307.1 ypg).
JMU was second in the FCS in sacks (4 per game) and fourth in rushing defense (84.8 ypg) in 2006, ranked eighth in total defense in 2005 (287.8 ypg) and was second nationally in rushing defense (86.8 ypg) in 2004.
In 1999, Barlow coached Curtis Keaton, who ran for team season records of 1,719 yards and 20 TDs and was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
Barlow also tutored tailback/return specialist Delvin Joyce, who in 2000 became the first Division I-AA player to reach the 1,000-yard career mark in rushing, receiving, punt returns and kickoff returns.
Prior to James Madison, Barlow spent three years at Oklahoma under John Blake, coaching outside linebackers and strong safeties in 1998 and serving as a defensive graduate assistant in 1996-97.
Barlow was the defensive coordinator at West Virginia State in 1995 and defensive line coach at Hutchison (Kan.) Community College in 1994. He started his coaching career in 1991, spending three seasons as a defensive assistant at his alma mater, Marshall.
Barlow was an all-conference safety at Marshall, where he played from 1986-90. The Thundering Herd was national runner-up in 1987.
Barlow, who was also a sprinter on the Marshall track team, graduated in 1990 with a degree in business administration and a concentration in finance and business law.
