Same here. :( Assassin's Creed 1/2/Brotherhood and NBA 2K11 has completely dominated my game playing time for the past month. I haven't worked on my golfer in weeks. :(

It's so pointless, too. Is everyone unaware that the world is ending in exactly one week? I feel that this needs to be a more widely known impending apocalypse. I mean, I realize that the PS Network coming back online is a pretty big deal, but apocalypse in one week > network coming back.

(Reuters) - Sony Corp's computer networks remain vulnerable to attack three weeks after the company learned that it had been victim of one of the biggest data breaches in history, according to an Internet security expert.

Security researcher John Bumgarner discovered a potential bonanza for hackers by using little more than a web browser, Google's search engine and a basic understanding of Internet security systems.

Bumgarner, a well-regarded Internet security researcher and U.S. military special operations veteran, identified a handful of flaws that would be easy for a hacker to identify and potentially exploit.

Can someone explain it to me?I'll be honest, cdj, I know a lot about computer networks and how infrastructures are setup -- and this one has me baffled too. I guess the question that neither of us have the answer to is what were they turning "on"? I can't imagine that PSN has regional logon servers, or servers that are state by state, but maybe they do. I can understand why the entire Northeast went live at the same time, then, because maybe all of New England is going through servers in New York. But Maryland turning on as a standalone state is very strange ... you'd think they'd be grouped in with Delaware, DC, or Virginia at least.

With the 'Last Signed In' status under user names, it's funny to see who has signed in and who has not. It's been 24 days since PSN went down. A long time, but didn't feel quite that bad. Though, I'm sure to game companies, devs, and Sony it felt like an eternity.

I've seen others mention the same thing regarding emails. You have to think about how many people are probably going through that same process.

I'm sure the PS+ doesn't actually actually start counting down the number of days until the PS Store returns.

I thought that too, HB, but all of the account information in Account Management is still there. I'd imagine they just worked to get the Online Play servers back up first, and they're still working to secure the Store, as a secondary priority. It was implied early on that the Store wouldn't be returning as quickly as Online Play.

Guess it hasn't reached Lincoln yet :D

Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold, notes that it may take some time before servers are populated to the max, so don't panic if you can't access PSN immediately. The first phase of network restoration includes online play, Qriocity, video streaming, friend list functionality and PlayStation Home. The PlayStation Store is still out of commission.

I use Tritton AX Pro's and they are terrific. I'm not a sound snob or anything like that, they get the job done for me. On Black Ops I can hear where people are coming from just by listening for voices, reloads, foot steps, pulling the pin on a grenade, and shots. Also when it comes the faint sounds...I can hear sounds that were never there...like the crackling of a fire in the background while I'm running. Also when a chopper comes I can pretty much close my eyes and then when I open them my guns pointed at the chopper...if that's good enough direction quality. You have to set them up a little though, the basic settings out of the box suck and are not good. I got my bass and rear speaker turned up a little more for Black Ops games because I like foot steps behind me to be louder so I can turn quicker and notice it.

Overall if you don't wanna spend almost 250$ I'd just buy the AX Pro's for 150$. They are good quality to me, I enjoy watching movies with them on and everything. The best part about headsets is everyone else in the house or neighbors hear nothing really unless they are close...but on the inside you're getting blasted away by explosions and everything else haha.

UPDATE MORE STUFF: Only warning about these Surround Sound headsets is all the wires... There is only one wire leading to the headset, but there is a lot more on the box. The AX Pro's use a sound box that you can increase the sound area(How far you pick up sounds from) and you can make volume changes. The awesome thing about all that is once u get it set up you probably won't have to touch it again. Put some zip ties on it and clean it up.... The headset has an inline controller that you can adjust FRONT/LEFT/RIGHT/REAR/BASS volume and the Chat volume without having to make a move while you're gaming. The AX Pro's use an Optical Wire to plug into the PS3.

From Joystiq.

If you've been keeping score, we've missed out on three regularly scheduled PlayStation Store updates since the service went down last month, preventing users from downloading items like the already long-delayed PSN RTS Under Siege. There's a lot of content to get caught up on -- and to get us there, the storefront will receive updates "multiple times per week once commerce functionality is restored," according to the latest PlayStation Blog FAQ.

"We will update the PlayStation.Blog with information on timing of the Store restoration," adds the FAQ, "as well as the full list of new content as each publish occurs." If you're the type who likes to spend exorbitant sums of money on each batch of PSN additions, you might want to steel yourself for the oncoming deluge.

Totally agree; I traded inFAMOUS in a while ago after nearly getting Platinum and regretted doing so. Apparently my regrets can go away now.

Not sure what I'll go with for the other free game; HD space is going to have a big hand in my decision since I only have the 60GB HD and I have no idea how large the game file for inFAMOUS is.

EDIT
Based on the press release when inFAMOUS originally became available for PSN, looks like it's a 6.88 GB file! Going to have to look into my available space before downloading for sure!

So here's some interesting news. Sony brought PSN back up in North America, Australia, and Europe, but so far not Japan. Why? Japan's making them guarantee its security first (http://ingame.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/16/6654248-japan-says-not-so-fast-to-sony-playstation-network-).

I definitely don't blame them. PS3 users here in the US were in such an uproar because they wanted to play their games. But how concerned about security were they? If I was a PS3 user, I would rather PSN stay down for 3 months than come up without making damn sure the new security measures are actually worth a damn. I hope Sony is very sure and confident in their new security measures, because I can only imagine the uprising, not only from PS3 users, but from security communities, if PSN gets hacked and taken down again a week or month or whenever from now.

My interest in that story stems more from the fact that I'm relatively sure that no one in America thought to stop SCEA from putting the network back online until their security is double checked. Yet Japan, the home country for the corporation, did. Very intriguing.

Yeah, I definitely don't remember anyone in Congress, elsewhere in government, or in any position of ability to do so, saying anything to SCEA or about them in general as to regarding how well their "new security" is and if it has been fully tested and checked and if it is now good enough to stand up to at least most, if not almost all attack attempts on it.

For SCEA's sake, I sure hope these new security measures are exactly all that they are being touted as. Because if they aren't, and hackers breaking in and take the system down again, there is going be a lot more hell to pay than just a bunch of pissed off gamers.

Bringing PSN back up was quite literally a no-win scenario for Sony. Sure, they got back in the good graces of the users (somewhat), but the hackers are likely to view it as a challenge. You know they want to take it down again. And if it goes down again, Sony will never recover -- especially if it's soon.

To me, LBP is impressive in what it can do, but as a game, it didn't hold much for me. After playing the in-game "storyline", I didn't download very many created levels and didn't have enough patience to create my own level. am I missing a detail here ? a couple questions-

now that online is back up for psn- each time i've turned on my game, I have had to sign into psn instead of it just still being connected. Is there a setting to automatically sign in that i'm missing ?

also, since I got a new ps3- this new one has no switch in the back to completely turn off or one. In the manual for the new one it says to unplug if not using the game for a long period. how long a period ? do you guys leave yours plugged in so you see the red light ,when not using it ? or do you unplug game when youre done using it for the night and plug it in the next day ? i've been unplugging mine

would I somehow harm mine by plugging and unplugging as I have been ? that might be a reeaaly dumb question, but who knows ? hah

This one a year or so now. My last one didn't break, my home was broken into and all the electronics (TV, Camera, PS3, etc) were taken except my XBOX 360 Elite was left plugged into the wall lol. Sold my elite a few days later and went and got a Samsung 52" Plasma PS3/Blu-Ray Movie Bundle deal from Best Buy where the PS3 was pretty much free.

I've had tremendous luck with consoles, none of mine have ever broken except when my nephew put pennies in the drive slot of my original Phat PS3.

I do as well. I also have mine running on a 600W/1000VA UPS. In the past I had a few times where my power just shut off while I was playing for a while. As you know this isn't good for the PS3 to be shutdown that way.

Also after I finish playing for an extended period of time or in general I will exit of a particular game I'm playing, then move over to the friends list or any other menu on the XMB then let the system run for about 10 minutes until the fans quiet down. Shutting it off immediately after you finish playing I wouldn't imagine would be too wise because the system is at its hottest stage while gaming.

I also use compressed air to blow dust out every 2 weeks and while its not in use I cover it with a hand towel. Yeah I know I'm a bit extreme :D

Mine sits in the open and I don't baby her at all. She has no scratches or anything and has only been transported three times (Home from the store and two moves.) I do need to get a can of air duster though...usually I use a toothpick which takes more time but it doesn't blow it INTO the system.

The graphics card in the PS3 is severely outdated (comparable to a Geforce 7600gt - which is about 5-6 generations behind where we are now) (same as the 360 - it's comparable to a Radeon x1800XT which is about 7-8 generations behind). Just putting one video card that's equivalent to a Geforce GTX 460 (~$200.00 to consumers) would be ginormous for video capability. Adding two of them which make them just as powerful as most high end gaming machines. Then they would just need to do a serious cooling setup (watercooled FTW) instead of some bullshit two fan system and you'd have a gaming console able to do what most computers can do (which is WAY better than what consoles do right now).

I don't think Microsoft and Sony want to get into another "arms" race. Everyone knows that $600 bomb Sony laid when the PS3 first came out severely hindered their momentum from launch. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all know now that $300 is the "sweet spot" for launch and if any company is going to get their console to that price, they can't go with the latest and greatest high-end tech.

This is exactly what they need to do. I would go cross-fired graphics cards, water cooled, upgraded cpu, and more memory. Then that's basically all you need with a new console and just prefect everything else you already got.

And I've seen a range of comparisons suggested for idea of equivalent PC video card. Certainly have to imagine it's better than a mid-range video card that was released months before the PS3 hit market.

Well, anyway, what the RSX compares to isn't really important. But your post suggests that if they just plug a couple new video cards into the PS3, voila we'll have a better machine. And you'd be right -- for the short term. The PS3 is nearly five years old, and when it was release it's graphics capabilities were better than what "most" consumers computers could do. Maybe not the enthusiast buying Maximum PC, but certainly your average video game. And even then, the biggest problem is taking advantage of the hardware they're given. There's a reason that PS3 and 360 games continue to improve graphically, even though the hardware hasn't changed since release in 2005-06. The engines and graphical code keep getting better. Console developers don't have DirectX, OpenGL or graphics middleware software to take advantage of.

And, in the long term, whatever graphical choice they choose is what we'll be stuck with for five, ten, whatever years. Computers will always be on the cutting edge, graphically, compared to PCs.

Oh, it's most definitely gonna always be behind the curve. But, still, they need to look toward the future to make the thing actually last (and be worthwhile) for more than 3-4 years.

The problem with the PS3 is the inability to use Microsoft's exclusive video rendering platform (DirectX). It's what 95% of the 360 and PC games are written in with the occasional game developer maximizing their game's potential with OpenGL (mainly Id Software as they were the pioneers for really pushing OpenGL to the limits with Quake and such).

The PS3 does in fact use OpenGL, but, the major issue is, it's a VERY old version of OpenGL (basically version 1.0 with some modified libraries that's very close to being 2.0 but significantly further away from 3.0 or 4.1 - granted, those were released after the PS3 was created and so forth). Where as, the 360 is using an advanced version of Direct X 9 which makes programming for it ridiculously easy compared to programming/porting to a platform that is sadly rarely used anymore outside of the PS3.

So, in the end, Sony is fighting a losing battle when it comes to trying to compete with basically a stripped down PC in a box. The ease of programming for the 360 is so ridiculous compared to the PS3, it's a wonder if more and more companies aren't just saying screw it and sticking with programming just for the PC and 360 and forgetting about the PS3 altogether.

Oh, it's most definitely gonna always be behind the curve. But, still, they need to look toward the future to make the thing actually last (and be worthwhile) for more than 3-4 years.Eh ... looking "toward the future" is what got them in trouble with the PS3. I agree that there are some aspects (512 MB RAM) of the PS3 that were incredibly shortsighted. But they used a custom graphical framework that was, as far as I knew at the time, better than anything else currently on the market. You can't jump too far into the future. The PC graphics market, especially with GPU computing, has jumped so far in the last five years that no matter what Sony did they were going to be behind.

If you've seen something I haven't, then I'll take your word for it ... but my understanding was that neither console had the ability to use OpenGL or DirectX.

OpenGL on the PS3 is based on OpenGL|ES (OpenGL for Embedded Systems) rather than classic desktop OpenGLHuh ... didn't know that. That's more capability than I thought they had, but that's still a far cry from actual OpenGL. I certainly didn't know that the 360 could use DirectX. Maybe the limitations I was aware of only existed for the PS2/Xbox and earlier generations, but doesn't apply anymore.

You are right about programming for the PS3 versus 360. I thought that was only going to bite them early, but it has clearly continued to be an influence for developers.

Yeah, unfortunately, a water-cooled system is far too difficult to clean and maintain for your average moron. To be fair, I've built PCs and I'm not willing to try a water-cooled system. Cleaning and maintaining practically anything is too difficult for your average moron, let alone something like a water-cooled system.

Though you might be able to make a handy side job out of cleaning water-cooled PS4s. Kinda like all the house-cleaning services.

I think we're going to eventually reach a point where fans aren't good enough for cooling our components (which may be why RROD is so common). But it's gotta be something that doesn't require maintenance either.

I can personally attest to the fact that, because on the PS3 you have to load pretty much everything from the disc instead of being able to rip the entire disc onto the HD, games on the PS3 are slower because of load times, frame skips, etc because it has to constantly load the information from the disc and then funnel it to the HD and then to the processor than to the video card whereas, with the 360 and you ripping the entire game from the disc to the HD so that it hits the disc MUCH less frequently, it subsequently makes the games run smoother when you hit the invisible wall where it needs to load more information into memory.

FWIW, on my 2nd trip to EA this year (April), I was the only one playing a ps3 version of 12 (no ps3 version was available on my other trips). Several (probably 4 or 5) of the other CD guys commented how much crisper and more vibrant the ps3 version looked. Now, I understand there could be 101 reasons for this, but I mention it just to point out that the ps3 version of NCAA is definitely on par with the 360. Both versions look fantastic.

sounds good to me, for the longest time the regular xbox version was crap compared to the ps2 version, but then somewhere around 2005 or so I noticed on my friends xbox's that madden and ncaa looked better as the dev's got use to the new tech...(i assume) maybe they are finally getting used to the advanced and different tech of the ps3 :)

I will agree with mors that the ability to install the entire game to HDD makes a very big difference between 360 and PS3 versions, and our experience playing them.
