Announced at the 2010 VGAs. I never played the old games in the series, but hearing from those who have, it seems like it was a pretty popular series.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhkDL6gWUa8&feature=sub

Redefining the SSX franchise, SSX: Deadly Descents will pit riders versus both mountain and man. Players will explore the story of a team who seek to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet. The team will travel the world to face the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them. From the peaks of the Himalayas, where the air is so thin that riders have to descend through the death zone at breakneck speeds to keep from blacking out, to the solid ice ranges of Antarctica, where a sunlit line is the only survival option when temperatures drop 50 degrees centigrade in the shade. And the mountain isn’t the only danger players will face. In SSX: Deadly Descents the first goal is to survive. The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it.

The official website (http://www.ea.com/ssx) has some screens, videos, and wallpapers.

Yesssssssssssssssssssss ... been asking for a current gen SSX for a while!

This trailer is getting some slack (being called SSX: Black Ops) because they're going away from their happy party style for a more serious tone.

I don't mind this trailer....seems pretty interesting. Going to be a long wait for next winter, and if this does well, it could open the door for the more party-style happy version to return.

I'd be surprised if they didn't have something in the game that honors the old style and feel. You never know, though.

I doubt it. This is a COMPLETE 180 from the series. It just wouldn't fit to have the happy party style in with this.

Not even as something hidden or as DLC?

It just wouldn't fit at all IMO....I'm thinking that if this sells well, we'll have alternating years of happy SSX and serious SSX.

I am watching an SSX 3 auction on eBay....it's backward compatible, never played it. Played the hell out of Tricky though.

SSX 3 was my favorite. I loved teh open world type feel to it. Plus, some of the larger races were crated by combining various tracks and the backcountry area. I personally can't wait for the new game to come out.

Courtesy Stick Skills (http://stickskills.com/news/1468/new-ssx-deadly-descents-details-uncovered/):

While the details are still rather scarce on the title, the March 2011 issue of the Official Xbox Magazine has lent a few more tidbits on the title. Below, we've listed a few different excerpts from the magazine.
Sequel is said to still have "great characters, great tricks, great environments, awesome speeds, great music, tight controls, and totally ridiculous gameplay".
The title is not being developed as previously rumored by the Skate team, and does not feature Skate style controls.
The title will still feature plenty of shortcuts and longcuts.
One of the game's early taglines is, "Race It, Trick It, Survive It".
A few of the goals are just to simply get off of the mountain alive.
A few examples of the Survival challenges would be outracing avalanches, avoiding fatally freezing "shady" areas, and "getting through the Himalayas' oxygen-barren 'death zone' before you black out".
The team was very impressed with Criterion's "Autolog" feature in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and the article suggests that the team is heavily looking into implementing that into the title.
The game is taking some of the more iconic mountains and peaks in the world and "SSX-ing" them wherever they feel like it.
The game is said to be much more approachable than Shaun White Snowboarding or Stoaked.
Creative Director Todd Batty has dubbed the title almost a "Burnout on snow".

From CVG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/286966/news/ssx-deadly-descents-will-be-in-3d/):

"In the latest issue of PSM3 the mag exclusively confirms that the title will offer "200+ real world tracks mapped using NASA topography data" and follows this up by revealing it's in 3D.

EA has said it knows fans are clamouring for this game and "have lots of surprises in store" for them."

The game now appears to be headed to a 2012 release.

Snowboarding sequel SSX: Deadly Descents apparently won’t be bombing down the slopes anytime soon, with the latest issue of OXM confirming the game’s still got a fair chunk of development time ahead of it.

That’s according to creative director Todd Batty, who told the magazine (as spotted by Game-n-Trains) that the development team will still be hammering away at the title for another 15 months or so.

As such, this puts Deadly Descents out around late 2012/ early 2013. The game was first unveiled at the Spike Video Game Awards back in December 2010. In addition to the above, the publication also turned up a few fresh tidbits, as detailed below.

-The campaign mode will have players darting through nine Deadly Descents, in addition to Explore and Live Events. Apparently, you’ll be part of the SSX Corporation.
-As well as Elise, former SSX star Zoe Briggs will also be making a comeback alongside one other, as-of-yet unannounced character.
-An estimated 200-300 tracks and paths will be featured over the nine peaks. Gamers can pick which track they want to race and pinpoint where the chopper will drop them off.
-Tricks have been mapped to two controller inputs, rather than the entire pad.
-Lastly, Batty commented that the multiplier scoring feature will pop up again, albeit minus the colourful snowflakes from past iterations.

'Deadly Descents' being dropped from game title.

EA Sports looks to still any bad vibes that have reverberated from negative reaction to the debut teaser for SSX: Deadly Descents by toning down the emphasis on "deadly." The company has officially dropped "Deadly Descents" from the game title, Game Informer confirms, and has begun a marketing campaign that, in part, assures fans that developer EA Canada is not abandoning the series' arcade roots in favor of more realistic gameplay in the reboot.

The image makeover isn't fully complete, however, as the original SSX: Deadly Descents logo and name are still prominent on the EA.com game page (as of publishing); though the new, just SSX logo was used in last week's promotional video and is featured on the game's Facebook page. Of course, as Joystiq commenter "ptcamn" pointed out last week, lost in this little fiasco is the fact that EA tried a very similar, "survive the ride" marketing campaign for 2003's SSX 3 -- skull-face lightning flash and all.

In SSX your tricks don't just earn you points, they reshape the mountain, turning it into your snow covered playground.

Looks like it's coming along pretty nicely; apparently E3 attendees will be able to play this "Trick It" course at the show. I'm a little concerned at how the "reshape" of the mountain works when you land from high up--looks a bit "off" right now--but there's still a while to go and a lot of refining to be done before the January 2012 release.

SSX Keeps Its Core By Passing Up A Skiing Option

Many long-time SSX fans are wondering if the reboot can reclaim past glory.

Some are worried that EA will try to do too much; that they'll steer the franchise in another direction. But change can be good, yes? According to creative director Toddy Batty, the game was actually going to boast one feature that could've changed the entire feel of the game. According to what Batty told Edge (as cited at VideoGamer), the new project once had skiing. Yeah, that's right.

"We had skiing in at the very early days in this SSX, and I was actually one of the advocates; I was pushing that we should have it. That's something that made its first appearance in SSX: ON Tour, but the tough thing about skiing is that every single animation in the entire game would have to be duplicated for characters with skis as opposed to characters on snowboards.

If we did skis, it would mean half as many tricks split across skis and snowboards. SSX at its core is a snowboarding game first and foremost."

Even so, Batty did say that skiing would probably arrive "in one form or another" after SSX was on store shelves. "We'd love to do skis at some point in the future, maybe as DLC or in a follow up version..." But how do the avid franchise fans feel? Would they vote for skis...?

Music producer, Freddy Ouano, has been talking about the way sound is dealt with in SSX. The music is very dynamic, reacting to actions that they player takes throughout a game.

“So if you catch big air the music might pull out, if you grind the music’s gonna stutter. When you’re carving the music might pan left to right. If you have a big bail, the music’s gonna react in real time based off the action that you’re performing in real time.”

As well as the extensive sounding track-list, SSX will also allow you to play your own music off the console hard drive. The best bit is that this will also be subject to the remixing.

Actually, the best bit is the game will feature ‘Tricky’ by Run DMC. Check out the full dev diary below.

Got the game earlier this week--add me, Paakaa10, on PSN if you're looking for another "competitor" on your friends list--and I'd say it's definitely worth a purchase if you're a long-time SSX fan or enjoyed playing the demo. The "Deadly Descents" Survive It runs in World Tour mode can be a bit of a mixed bag, but the Explore Mode--which is basically what you saw in the demo--offers a whole lot of value.

Also, I'm starting up a weekly series at Stat Box Stories called "Diamond Descents" which will be using the "Global Events" feature to let people compete against each other to set the best time/score/distance on a given run each week. Should be a good way to earn credits in-game.

EDIT: Forgot to add the link to the announcement: http://statboxstories.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/stat-box-stories-introduces-diamond-descents-in-ssx/

Picked up the game last night. Pretty fun actually and it's apparent from this morning's failures at placing on the online boards that I most certainly suck at this game. Add me if you want easy scoring wins lol. psn: MPMarlowe

Is it 360 only?

No. 'Share' it and you'll then get an option for either PS3 or 360 code.

SSX 'Tricky' DLC hinted at for SSX (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2012/04/10/tricky-dlc-hinted-at-for-ssx/). It's unclear if this is some new modes, levels, costumes, etc.

Info on the SSX DLC coming Monday. (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=367850056586503&set=a.173499019354942.31812.112224572149054&type=1) Given that the picture shows characters, gear, and a location, this DLC may contain all three.

I never played the series before, so I don't come in with any expectations or knowledge of how it played in the past. The comments on Facebook surrounding the DLC announcement seem pretty positive - which is surprising. However, that might change once content and/or pricing is announced.

I'm really having a blast with this game. Anytime I plan on playing it for 15-30 minutes, I usually end up going for several hours. I wish I was better at it (I'm not going to catch most people on my friends list), but I medal most events so I can't complain.

According to vgchartz.com, through March 31 the game has sold around 790K worldwide. I don't know what their goals were, but that seems like a solid number for a game that doesn't have licensing fees to make up.

I've played all of the games in the SSX series, and it always amazes me how much people have a nostalgic focus on SSX Tricky. Tricky was basically a "remix" or "expansion pack" for the original SSX; all but two of the courses in Tricky were in the original game. It was the debut of using Run-DMC and the "Tricky" state--and it did have famous voice actors like Lucy Liu doing character voices--but all in all, I never got into it as much as most people.

It will be cool--and probably sell more copies of the game--for SSX Tricky DLC to come out and satisfy those super-nostalgic gamers who have rose-tinted glasses looking at Tricky and not liking the direction that this revival of SSX took. I still maintain that SSX 3 is the opus of the series--what with the ability to do a 30-minute free ride down a virtual mountain with no loading times--but adding content in the vein of that game would probably require significant overhauls to the code, so I'm not hopeful to see anything significant from that era of SSX.

It's a Double XP weekend starting NOW! That's right, trick, grind and race your way to twice the experience points all weekend long.

- The new mountain range (Mt. Eddie) is pretty fun. Lots of big jumps, pretty easy to rack up some big points.

- The 'Double XP Weekend' currently going on should have a huge asterisk attached. It is only on one range at a time and only on a drop or two. Currently, it is on a drop in NZ where the entry fee is 1.5M. Yikes.

- There have been some changes to the structure of Global Events (http://www.merqurycity.com/ssx_forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10572&p=300021). So far, I'm not a huge fan as it cuts down significantly on the available ranges - only three at a time. It seems that the cost of the events have gone up significantly as well. My guess is that some of the changes were intended to drive or funnel competitors into these three ranges for more competition and higher rewards for placing. However, I found Global Events a lot less enjoyable to play last night with limited selection and/or a high entry fee for many of them. Combined with the Double XP Weekend having such high entry fees, I get the impression they are hoping to get people to purchase additional credits instead of earning them.

- SSX Creative Director Todd Batty took part in a reddit chat (http://www.reddit.com/r/tabled/comments/t1a1k/table_iama_amaa_todd_batty_creative_director_ssx/) this past week that covered a lot of good community questions.

- According to vgchartz.com, the game has sold a combined 750K (rough estimate of numbers). I've read some discussion that a dropping sales price indicated a struggle for the game, but it's looking like it has sold well (especially worldwide).

Tricky was basically a "remix" or "expansion pack" for the original SSX; all but two of the courses in Tricky were in the original game. It was the debut of using Run-DMC and the "Tricky" state--I seriously cannot play even a moment of SSX without humming "Tricky" in my head. Thanks to way too many hours of that game.

I still maintain that SSX 3 is the opus of the series--what with the ability to do a 30-minute free ride down a virtual mountain with no loading times--On Tour was pretty awesome, for my money. My personal favorite.

Whatever they did with global events is a joke. Never before did I ever run out of things to do with Global Events. Now with this new setup where some drops have absolutely zero things going on, it's terrible. It's going to kill Global Events unless they change it back to the original way.

If you liked SSX, good news - you can expect a sequel.

EA's other big reboot this year, SSX, apparently fared a bit better. Gibeau called this year's revival "a very successful launch for us," and lauded the game's "online innovation" as a catalyst for bringing the series back. "It's done well and you'll probably see more in the future," Gibeau concluded.

Apparently more DLC coming for the game.

A new video of a run in SSX has hit and EA claims that “even the cleverest eyes eyes will only spot a just some of what’s on the way.” So far the most common guesses have to do with “freeride” which is essentially just a wide open exploration mode and the return of Merqury City – but apparently there are a multitude of new things to discover.

Latest SSX Patch Adds Two New Game Modes

The teases from EA Sports regarding new content for SSX materialized today in a patch for the game that delivers two new modes for free. As expected head-to-head live online multiplayer races are now in and known as “3-2-1-GO” as is the ability to simply explore a mountain in “Freeride” mode.

Online races now support up to 5 live competitors. “3-2-1-GO” events can be found at the wall or browsing the globe and are available for both “Race It” and “Trick It” runs. The winner in the latter will be determined by who scores the most and crosses the finish line before the clock expires.

In addition to the new modes a few minor fixes have been delivered with the patch.

I haven't checked, but I believe the patch is out now for both systems.
