Some news came out today that has got me :)) :)) :)) If this is true, I'm kinda glad it is a direct sequel rather than an MMO. I'm not sure if I would like an MMO.

http://tinyurl.com/2fcj4pm

Eurogamer Denmark’s reporting that a Bethesda rep has said Elder Scrolls V is not only in development, but that’s a straight sequel to Oblivion.

Going by this machine translation (via M2G), VO is currently underway.
The news comes from “a person involved in the game project.”

EG.dk says in the report that it isn’t going to drop any more details because of an NDA. Bethesda will be pleased about that.

Bethesda boss Todd Howard said at QuakeCon in August that a two-year project staffed by a team of 90 was to be announced soon, adding that the title is “pretty far along.”

The next Elder Scrolls game has been rumoured forever. It was supposed to be heading for an E3 announcement in June.

We were told back in January that the RPG is actually an MMO.

Sounds like we’ll know soon enough. Bethesda’s declined to comment on the story.

Nice ... something fresh will be sweet. I need to put Oblivion back in eventually. Now that I finished New Vegas, I'll probably do it soon. Never did finish it. Oblivion was one of the casualties of my PS3 getting stolen three years ago as I had 70+ hours into it.

I've purchased it twice (once on PS3, once on PC), though probably only spent a grand total of $15 for them combined, and neither times have I been able to finish it. Not sure what it is, but it just seems as though it's too much to do. I'll probably try and pick up where I left off on PC to see how much I have left.

Yeah I had it on PS3, put in 70+ hours, restarted on the PS3, put in another 30+ hours. Sold it and am going with the GOTY edition on 360, but I'm not too far at all on that...I think I'm barely out of jail and meeting Jaffre for the first time.

I might actually be interested now that they aren't using a 10 year old engine (Gamebryo) for their game. It's about time they stepped up their game. The environments may have looked pretty decent (definitely not great and whoever made their landscapes needs to do more research on how environments work), but the models looked atrocious.

Now if they can just make a main plot line that's actually interesting and isn't the same old cliche crap, I might actually play their game for more than 20 hours before getting bored.

Skyrim also utilizes a new "Radiant Story" quest system, which allows the game to personalize side quests for each individual player. Rather than simply offering a prescribed list of quests in certain locations, the game can tailor quests to each player based on where they are, which characters they've met and what their skills are.

More stuff on the new engine:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1144410p1.html

Cannot wait!

Finally, Skyrim's new technologies will also have an impact on the way the game plays out, having a bearing on player quests. "Traditionally in an assassination quest, we would pick someone of interest and have you assassinate them," Howard explained. "Now there is a template for an assassination mission and the game can conditionalize all the roles – where it happens, under what conditions does it take place, who wants someone assassinated, and who they want assassinated. All this can be generated based on where the character is, who he's met. They can conditionalize that someone who you've done a quest for before wants someone assassinated, and the target could be someone with whom you've spent a lot of time before."

Collector's Edition is announced! (http://bethblog.com/index.php/2011/08/05/quakecon-2011-skyrim-collectors-edition-announced/) (but JESUS it's pricey)

http://cdnstatic.bethsoft.com/bethblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/skyrim_ce_items_x360-1024x792.jpg

For months many of you have asked for details on whether or not there will be Collector’s Edition for Skyrim. At the end of a rousing QuakeCon presentation, game director Todd Howard confirmed its existence.

The limited collector’s edition for The Elder Scrolls® V: Skyrim™ will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and Games for Windows and can be pre-ordered now through participating retailers in North America, Europe and Australia. Like the regular release of the game, the Collector’s Edition will be available on 11.11.11

In addition to including the highly-anticipated game, this premium version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim also includes:

Alduin Statue: Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector’s only statue stands 12” tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater. He stands perched atop one the game’s many dragon walls that teach the player the lethal language of dragons.

‘The Art of Skyrim’ Official Art Book: Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8” x 12 1/8” coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim. With a foreword by game director Todd Howard and commentary from Bethesda Game Studios artists, readers will be guided through the game’s iconic visual style.

‘The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ DVD This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team as they take you from concept to creation and provide insights into the story, gameplay, setting, legacy of the Elder Scrolls franchise, and much more.

The Collector’s Edition will be available through pre-order and it retails for $149.99 (US), €149.99 (Europe), £129.99 (UK), and A$199.99 (Australia). If you’re interested in purchasing, we recommend you pre-order now, as the it will be available in extremely limited quantities.

I have the R2 one and it's lame. It was a cheap plastic action figure, a making of bluray, some special weapon skin, and an alternative cover for the game. Gran Turismo 5 had a really good one, and the Epic Edition for Gears 3 looks really bad ass. But yeah, for the most part, they're a rip off.

IGN's brief playthrough from 8/4 (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/118/1186214p1.html)

While some of the adventuring resulted in random combat, and some directed me through easy to follow labels on the world map and compass to quest goals, at other times I wound up discovering the bizarre and unexpected. Take for example the black door adorned with a skull I found near a frigid pond in a rocky recess. When I approached the subdued soundtrack of a tranquil forest was joined by a faint, menacing drum beat. The door spoke to me in an otherworldly whisper while shimmering faintly, and asked if I knew the music of life. I ran through the conversation tree to exhaust all options, answering drums, screaming, some kind of choir. The door promptly declared me to be unworthy and refused to open. I don't know what the correct course of action was, but knowing that oddities like this exist in Skyrim is just as exciting as the knowledge that I'll eventually be able to fight dragons.

From Joystiq:

When The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim arrives in stores this November (likely by way of carrier dragon), it'll assuredly feature many, many hours of content. Nevertheless, gamers will want more, and Bethesda has promised post-launch content to be of the "substantial" variety. The first two pieces of that content will arrive exclusively on Xbox Live Marketplace at least "30 days before it's available anywhere else."

In regards to the leveling system do you not like that the monsters level up with you? If so you might avoid Dead Island because the zombies level up along side you. Does not really bother me that much as it adds to the challenge.

My main issue with the leveling system is that, by making all monsters level up with you (with no real divergence in that system or even a cap in that system) you have giant rats that are just as powerful as a Troll or a Skeleton and that just doesn't sit well with me. Fallout did something similar but it was completely nullified by your ability to basically headshot 95% of the enemies you ran into during the game. But, the thing that Fallout added that made it better than Oblivion was a cap in both minimum and maximum levels for the enemies in the game. So you didn't run into a level 19 bandit near the beginning of the game. He was like level 5 or even level 10. You didn't have shit where you had an epic fight against a god damn Mudcrab because he was level 25 just because you're level 25. That's just silly.

As long as they follow what they started with Fallout's leveling system, it will be ok. I still despise, with a passion, their level up system of the more you use something, the better you are with it. It's really dumb because it completely lacks any real curve in the leveling of it. It's pretty much a straight line from level 1 to level 99 in that skill and results in not being able to play the game in a variety of ways because you are screwed in the long run because your levels in various skills are far too low.

I will definitely try to play the game on the PC without any mods, but, as soon as it gets ruined for me because of their dumb ideals on how a leveling system should work (and, believe me, I'm VERY confident that it will be terrible, just like Oblivion's was) I will immediately start using one of the three leveling mods that I'm sure will be made available by the same people that made their leveling mods for Morrowind and Oblivion.

So, I got bored and watched the videos. First thing I notice, the enemy is still incredibly dumb and just stands around as you kill them from the shadows without reacting at all. God I hope that's not the case in the retail version of the game.

Because after just a few level ups, rats and mud crabs were done with one swipe, among other things like wolves. Right now I'm level 16 on this playthrough and I can waste a troll pretty easily too.

Yes, I did. But I also played it vanilla on the PC and it was atrocious. Yes, I was over embellishing on the Mud Crabs, but it's definitely not the case with monsters in dungeons. Skeletons, bandits, etc shouldn't be epic battles at every turn.

My biggest issue is, because of them doing what they do with the auto-level ups for enemies, you only run into, at most, two enemies at once.

In my opinion, Oblivion is only playable with mods and, if you haven't played it with mods, you have no idea what you're missing.

I think I read that only 12 voice actors were used for Oblivion, I think Skyrim's is multiplied by 6 or 7.

Well, it turns out that the reason why there were only 12 voices for Oblivion was because they ended up being 6 months behind schedule when they went to do the voice recording sessions so they basically did marathon recording sessions with the voice actors that they had on hand instead of all the other voice actors they were supposed to have.

■We killed the assailant, and then went into a shop where people were talking about the noise outside. It was a scripted event (and that start of a side-quest), but happened in a brilliantly organic way.
■We killed an Elk with massive antlers (obviously head of the small group he was with). When he was dead we were able to keep the antlers, which we would no doubt have displayed in our house as soon as we'd bought one in one of the cities.
■We were able to look at characters' facial expressions without cringing at the old engine. They’re much improved, and suspicious looks from a town leader's bodyguards work brilliantly with the dialogue to set a mood that we should mind our Ps and Qs.
■We dual-wielded magic. It's possible to have two of the same spell or even different spells mapped to the triggers.
■We went swimming in a river and almost fell down a big waterfall, and let out an audible gasp when we climbed to safety.
■We caught Riverbetty fish and Salmon while swimming with our bare hands.
■We waited in the middle of a field just to see the day/night transition unfold before your very eyes. It was much like Shenmue II.
■We went to the nearest city and took a carriage to a city that was further away. It could take us to any of the game’s cities – even the ones we hadn’t been to.
■We heard people shout for help in the wilderness in a fashion not dissimilar to Red Dead Redemption, except instead of needing to be defended from outlaws, they’re running from dire wolves or Orcs. Or dragons.
■We stared in awe at the mist around mountains. It looks phenomenal.
■We went into someone’s house and were asked politely to leave. Then firmly. Then they started calling for the guards. So long, old RPG tropes!
■We were happy to see that the “over-encumbered” message was gone, replaced with “You are carrying too much to be able to run,” which, crucially, still allows you to move, only very slowly. Very… very slowly.
■We explored the tops of mountains, and noticed that the snowfall increased as we got higher. It’s all rendered in 3D.
■We slowly climbed down a steep mountain, jumping from rock to rock to avoid taking damage.
■We tried to climb slowly down a steep mountain, but then fell to our death.
■We stole a horse and had people yell at us as we rode away.
■We saw a woolly mammoth lay dead, but just as we were about to get off our horse and have a look, we saw a bear that had been feeding off it. He'd seen us too. Run!
■We spent 20 minutes riding from one spot on the map to another. Skyrim is freakin' humongous, and much of it in wide-open areas populated by mammoths and giants.
■We learned the difference between riding on the road with a horse (they can gallop at full-speed) and riding in the hills on a horse (they can only trot, never building speed).
■We fell off a cliff with our horse several times. Most of the times it killed us, but once we saw our character slowly climb to his feet and continue after a particularly unfortunate fall.
■We were amazed as we rode through shallow water with a horse. Water ripples are brilliantly rendered in real time, and look straight out of a Pixar movie.
■We had the horse shot out from under us. Enemies will always attack your steed first before they start attacking you. Once your horse is down... you ain't goin' nowhere, son.
■We mistakenly hit the wrong button to jump, because it’s now mapped to A, which is where it always should have been.
■We collected glow worms called “torchbugs,” which fly around. But sadly, collecting them kills them (and butterflies too) and adds their thoraxes and wings respectively as ingredients for alchemy in your inventory. Shame. But they look lovely while they're alive.
■We cried about killing torchbugs.
■We spent several minutes looting a large laboratory of ingredients.
■We crafted the crap out of potions. Once we found an Alchemy bench we filled out inventory with alchemical potions.
■We found Nirnroot. Hey! Nirnroot is back!
■We learned which ingredients do what. Snowberries and Silverside Perch resist frost; Dragon's Tongue and Strawberries both resist fire; Deathbell and Bleeding Crown both contain weakness to poison. When we mixed Snowberries, Silverside Perch, and Dragon's Tongue we created a Potion of Resist Frost.
■We also tried to improve our weapons using Grindstones, but we didn’t have any of the ingredients.
■We swung our axe at the Grindstone in frustration – it bounced off.
■We tried to talk to a Ghostly Headless Horsemen, but he wouldn’t have a conversation with us despite having a “talk' prompt.” Presumably, because he doesn’t have a mouth. That, or he’s a rude bastard.
■We mistakenly alerted guards as we tried to sneak up on them by bumping into bones dangling from ropes on the ceiling. They made a clattery noise and we jumped.
■We passed a stone column with a sword, shield, and flowers laid at its base. We left them well alone.
■We enjoyed talking to NPCs without time freezing around us. Talking to people is a much more organic process, happening in real-time.
■We reloaded a previous save because an NPC wouldn’t progress the quest. He just stood in the room looking like he wanted to attack a wall like it had wronged him. Or there was an enemy stuck in it.
■We hit a guard in the head with a mace and got thrown in jail.
■We tried to pick the lock in our jail cell but failed, breaking the one lockpick we snuck in.
■We broke out of our cell by smashing through a crumbing wall, and then took back our stuff and fought our way out .
■We saw some giants standing around and went to talk to them. They didn’t want to talk to us. Way to perpetuate the stereotypes, guys.
■We drank a potion and entered into an NPC’s memories.
■We talked to a salty sea captain who lost his sea salt in a sea cave.
■We overheard a conversation about women in a town having horrid nightmares, and were given a side-quest to help end them.
■We randomly attacked a ship’s captain, hoping the crew would join in our coup.
■We weren’t all that surprise when the crew didn’t join in our coup.
■We jumped off the boat into the water, and swam away from out failed coup.
■We walked in snow so thick we could barely see where we were going.
■We read the letters in our inventory, which are 3D and unfold as you select them, revealing their written contents realistically written on the paper, not just as screen text.
■We had some epic battles thanks to the new combat. Holding down the attack button does a charge attack in both senses of the word. Not only will the blow be more forceful, our Argonian also ran forward several steps before delivering the attack.
■We missed several powerful swings of our weapon. The lunge is easy to miss, though if it was too easy, the move would likely be overpowered. If you do hit, however, it knocks the hell out of them.
■We saw a fox while we were running through the forest. Quickly, we turned to it and used our magical ability to light it on fire. We actually laughed out loud and said “Heh, Firefox.”
■We leveled up and spent our skill to improve our magical abilities. It turned our small flame attack into a full-blown flamethrower.
■We swung a mace at a wolf and hit it so hard it rolled down the side of a hill for nearly a minute. It was a big hill.
■We were randomly attacked by a woman while passing a village, but the only reason we noticed it was because we heard a “twang” and saw an arrow fall to the ground after striking a rock.
■We overheard people talking about a recent attack, though they didn’t go into details.
■We found a cave in the middle of nowhere filled with traps.
■We tried to explore the cave, but were killed by the traps.
■We tried to explore the cave again, but were killed by zombies after being weakened by the traps.
■We decided that the cave sucked and was for losers and didn’t go back.
■We went to the cave again and cleared it, earning awesome new items and gaining a ton of experience.
■We walked into a city we saw an executioner preparing to bring an axe down on a man’s neck. For no reason at all, we took out a bow and shot the executioner in the head – causing every guard in the town to attack us.
■We ran from the guards, turning on Assassin’s Creed mode. We led them on a chase across bridges, up narrow paths, and down rooftops before dodging them down an alley and escaping

That's all well and good, but what is the main storyline like? So far, it sounds like Oblivion Part 2, without the monster leveling system. What really brings more to the table, besides dragons? The shouts you get sound REALLY lame and are basically stolen directly from Diablo 2 Barbarian stuff.

Without a main story that doesn't make me want to just go kill random shit instead of doing, why would I buy this when I could just play Oblivion with mods?

Looks awesome. Hopefully the story is actually interesting. There has been absolutely nothing about the main storyline at all. Has me worried that it's gonna be lame as hell, just like the Oblivion one was.

So, it's looking exactly like Oblivion so far. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I really want to know what the story is like. That's what's gonna be the make or break of whether or not I have as much fun with it as I could have had with Oblivion.

From Joystiq:

You've already been assured that you'll never run out of slayable dragons in Skyrim. In an interview with Wired, director Todd Howard revealed that the game features an inexhaustible supply of quest content, as well.

Using the "Radiant" quest system, the game randomly generates missions for each of the in-game guilds, as well as tasks offered by other NPCs. Examples cited by Wired include collecting flowers for an alchemist or hunting for bandits.

It's not bad. There were quests like that in Oblivion as well. Just do it as it comes up. From what I've heard, you could literally spend 10 hours just doing quests in Whiterun (the closest town from the starting spot).

I take them and never read them. Rumor has it there are 300 or so around in Skyrim. Some are spell books which you open and they go away. I never spent enough time playing Oblivion to find out. I am just hoping to be able to sell them or something.

So far I am having a blast. Killed a hunters dog by mistake (thought it was a wolf) and then had to kill the hunter because he was not happy that I did such a thing. Then on the way to the first quest you go at alone I waled casually down the river and picked more flowers than Richard Simmons at a flower shop.

Who all did you pick and what did you name your character?

Went with the Nord and named him Vlad the Impaler.

Stats so far:

Level: 12
Race: Khajit
"Class": Two Weapon Fighter
Skills I will be using: Lockpicking, Sneaking, Smithing, One-Hand Weapons
Perks with points so far: One-Hand Weapons and Smithing

4 extra perk points waiting to be used once I get 50 in OHW skill or 60 in Smithing (both are close). No magic at all since, so far, early in the game, magic is WAY overpowered compared to swords, plus, the new combat system is REALLY enjoyable.

5 hours into the game now. Killed my first dragon, that was pretty sweet. The ability to use a dragon shout is badass.

The main difference between this and Oblivion is there are enemies like wolves and skeletons that you just own with one shot, but there are some characters to start off with, you want to stay the hell away form. i.e. Giants and Frost Trolls to name a few.

I decided to go as a Nord on my first playthrough since we're up north in Skyrim. I need to find me a good one-handed sword so I can have the healing power in the left hand. Right now, I am using an iron battleaxe I found in the first part of the game, and it's 28 damage compared to I think 14 is my strongest one-handed sword.

Overall, I have a feeling this game could be better than Oblivion, which is one of my favorite games of all time.

Right off the bat, I have a shit ton of side quests built up. I've been mainly just doing the main quest lately, but if it is like Oblivion, there will be a point where I'll need to get side stuff done to get built up.

I recruited the chick who I got in a fist fight with in a bar/inn :D she was rejected by the fighters guild and is pissed about it and thinks she can take on anyone...bets you 100 gold to a fist fight. I knocked her out, then talked to her again, she was impressed how I knocked her out so she joined me :D

The problem was I was going up those 7000 steps to the Graybeards and came across a Frost Troll. I kept getting owned by it, so I used this ultra powerful fire scroll....unfortunately it's a ring of fire not just a straight shot, so I would always kill her :D finally I was smart and used a frenzy scroll on the troll (I'm a poet) and he ran off while I continued up the stairs. I got to the monestary last night when I went to bed.

Mors, what do you think of the story so far with the civil war and bringing back of dragons, etc.?

So far, it's interesting, though I haven't really delved much into the main quest yet (haven't even went to the Greybeards yet). I read in one of the reviews of the game that the main quest is only ~2 hours long, which seems completely wrong to me. I did just small parts of the beginning of the main quest, and it took me ~1 1/2 hours to do that. No way it's that short.

As for the story so far, it's definitely better than the whole bullshit with Oblivion. That stuff was so horribly written, it was atrocious. At least, with this, it's semi-interesting. I'm anxious to check out the rebellion side of things and talk to Ulfric Stormcrow. The beginning of the game made it sound like he's a Dragonborn as well or at least has the ability to use Thu'uns as well, which is definitely intriguing.

So far, though, I've been trying to finish up what quests I can in Whiterun before I go gallivanting off to another city. Becoming the Thane after killing the first dragon is REALLY cool. That's a VERY cool story plot. They definitely seemed to have learned how to write better dialog and such.

Yeah. I've seen that bug. It happens sometimes when you get hit by them like that as well. It's silly, but definitely makes you feel ridiculous underpowered when fighting them.

As for killing one of them, I haven't even tried as I've seen videos of people getting destroyed by them so I figured I'd steer clear of them for now.

Here you go Mors...

There's already over a hundred mods out for Skyrim. We've rounded up the best ten so far: http://bit.ly/rw31Tt

Yeah, I found that earlier myself. Nothing really all that groundbreaking yet, which is to be expected considering they haven't released the Skyrim Construction Set yet. Those are only going to be the tip of the iceberg once the SCS gets released.

I'm guessing the main story is more than 2 hours long....

Bethesda had a contest on which dev could beat the game the fastest, and I think he came in just under two hours.

For us non-devs, from what I heard the main quest is around 40 hours.

Regarding the main quest (this is VERY early on)

When you go try to retrieve the Dragonstone, that alone took a while to get through that cave.

Yeah, that's a pretty big cave, which is REALLY cool. That was the thing that really bothered me about Oblivion was most of the caves were really short.

There's this cave, that's just out there with no quest (or, at least, no quest that I've seen/gotten yet) that's covered in mist. It looks fuckin' gorgeous. Man, they did a REALLY good job of making cavernous areas look better.

My first follower, who I got after becoming Thane, got killed in some random cave b/c I used the upgraded "Unrelenting force" and she was in the way, which sucks b/c she was carrying a lot of junk that I had planned on selling. But I much prefer Faedren b/c he prefers to stay back and fire away with his bow and arrow while I go do the heavy damage up close.

lol i got owned like 25 times by that troll. i ended up climbing up onto that little ledge on the left hand side there, just before the opening of where that frost troll is. he'll never climb up there to attack you, so i just shot arrow after arrow at him, while lydia kept hacking away at him.

Well, just killed dragon #2 a little while ago and got another shout word (you can disarm someone with it) from a monument on top of a mountain (guarded by a few Frost Trolls that I managed to completely avoid because they could slaughter me in a few hits).

Overall, I'm level 13 (almost 14) and enjoying the hell out of being able to make my own badass equipment via Smithing abilities. Have a Smithing of 50 now, which means I could go with true Heavy Armor if I wanted to, but I think I'm going to stick with Light Armor for now as I start to be able to make Elven Light Armor.

Did a quest in Whiterun where I killed a Redguard militia leader (who totally look like guys from Arabia) and got some badass Scimitars, of which, I immediately went to the Skyforge in Whiterun and upgraded to be utterly ridiculous (30 damage with each one of them now that I have 2 perk points in One-Handed Weapon damage). I'm basically a killing machine.

I love the Thieves' Guild. In Oblivion, I'd steal shit out of the castles all the time. That was the most fun. For the Countess of Bruma I had to go fetch the Draconian Madstone, then when I took it back to her, all she did was put it in a case behind the throne :D pick the lock, and thank you!

But since I had that and a lot of other stolen goods that I kept for myself because of their powers, I always had to run away from the cops. I didn't want to have to try to fetch them out of the box after going to jail :D so I just ran like Forrest Gump.

Pictured above is the Notched Pickaxe, which looks an awfully lot like the one from Minecraft -- Notch, you likely know, is the creator of the game. Hats off to the Bethesda devs for including this in the game. If you want to see it for yourself (and perhaps use it to kill a few of the smaller dragon pups), you can find it in The Throat of the World. It shouldn't be too hard to find the one-of-a-kind pickaxe stuck in the biggest mountain in the game

Skyrim Update Coming for All Platforms (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/121/1212532p1.html)

Patches are coming to fix reported bugs in Skyrim. Bethesda has confirmed that issues will be addressed for all systems, and that work is currently underway on the updates.

"We are continuing to work on an update for all platforms to address any bugs and [performance] issues we can," Bethesda VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines tweeted.

Hines addressed the concerns of fans on Twitter, including some who were a little impatient. In response to one tweet, Hines wrote, "Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days. Calm down. We're working on it."

The update will likely fix the Xbox 360 graphics issues that Bethesda has already addressed. A release for the patch hasn't been confirmed, and Hines wrote that the company is "not going to give timeframes on this" for now.

Yep. Anything you take from the house would still be considered stealing (at least I assume), but you can store items in the house with no problems. All houses are always expensive. It was that way in Oblivion too.

Just got home from a live drive for one of our campaigns, and what a wonderful site, two packages containing Skyrim, MW3 and Halo Anniversary sitting in my front door. AC Revelations is going to get pulled off of my 360 for tonight as I jump into Skyrim. Question is, is there anything I need to know about it? Is there anything from ES IV that I should know before I start playing this? I've never played any of the Elder Scrolls series before this game, so I have no idea if there is stuff I should know before I jump into Skyrim so that the story will make sense.

Not really. It's a pretty self-contained story.

Only thing you need to know about Skyrim is, whatever you decide you want to do combat-wise, it's a viable option (even as far as going around punching the fuck out of people). Bethesda did a great job of making every way of killing shit a viable one.

I would recommend, since you enjoy Assassin's Creed so much, you should try going with a stealthy build with daggers. They added some REALLY cool assassination combat cutscenes with daggers and sneak attacks.

i'm in the same boat. never played any game in this series before, but i am absolutely loving this game right now.

i'd take the advice that mors said about using a dagger and sneak based person. there's a perk you can later get in the sneak tree that allows dagger based sneak attacks to do 15X the base damage. i'd also recommend finding a companion that's one or two handed attack based.

Skyrim was a hotly anticipated title from Bethesda, and rightly so. Critics have loved the newest Elder Scrolls title, and sales have shown that fans of the series love it as well. However, I think we’ve now found the ultimate fans. As reported on the Bethesda Blog, they have announced that the child of Megan and Eric Kellermeyer was named Dovahkiin (translated from dragon-speak means Dragonborn. Little Dovahkiin was born on the release date of Skyrim (11/11/11) and the parents will receive a lifetime supply of Bethesda Games. A little extreme to name your kid after Skyrim if you ask me, but to each their own. I’ve always considered myself a bit of a nerd, but this makes me look pretty normal.

i'm at like level 25 right now, with like a one handed skill of 41, and the damage is around 39...give or take 1 or 2 on those numbers though. it also drains 25 points of stamina and magicka per hit, as well as steals the soul and fills a soul gem if the enemy dies within 3 seconds of the first hit.

the only bad thing about it, imo, is it uses a lot of soul gems

A Half Dozen People Petition White House to Round Up All Copies of Skyrim, Outlaw and Burn Them (http://kotaku.com/5862623/a-half-dozen-people-petition-white-house-to-round-up-all-copies-of-skyrim-outlaw-and-burn-themhttp://kotaku.com/5862623/a-half-dozen-people-petition-white-house-to-round-up-all-copies-of-skyrim-outlaw-and-burn-them)

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Immediately Ban the Deadly Videogame Known as "SkyRim" for The Safety of America's Youths.
Whereas videogaming has proven to cause social, ethical and health problems in people of all ages,

Whereas sexual perversion and homosexuality are threatening to destroy the Christian foundations on which this nation was built,

Whereas a new video game has just been created that far exceeds any others in the psychological and spiritual damage it does to teens,

We, the American people, today ask you,

1) To enact an immediate ban on the videogame known as "SkyRim" produced by Blizzard Entertainment.

2) To seize and destroy all copies already in public hands and erase its presence on the internet.

3) To prosecute the players of "SkyRim" to the fullest extent of the law.

4) To create a national database of videogame avatars and "screen names" so that teenagers can be better monitored.

Morons are overtaking the world.

These are the dumbfucks who I think the death penalty should be used on. :fp: We have fucktards like these fucking up the gene pools in this world. :fp:

Be careful not to progress too quickly without pumping whatever ways you're using to kill stuff. I made the mistake of working on Alchemy and Smithing too much, and I'm level 33 and fights are REALLY hard. It's frustrating as hell.

God, I really need to get back into this. I have only played it for a couple hours and haven't had a chance to touch it since Monday or Tuesday. Granted, I haven't gotten to play any games besides maybe 30 minutes of MW3 Tuesday or Wednesday night, whenever it actually was, but Skyrim and AC Revelations have been getting seriously neglected.

Speaking of Skyrim, I need to find a good one-handed weapon.

I had the Mace of Molag Bal, and then I found "Dawnbreaker".... It is a sword that I now use exclusively along with a ebony sword (dual wielding). Grinds up undead.

Finding the large Statue of Meridia starts the quest.

Oh, I have like 70 or something in one-handed weapons at lvl 33, but it doesn't matter. I have 330 hitpoints (+30 from an amulet) but magic is absolutely RAPING me and I'm fighting Ancient Dragons now whose breathe weapon just completely DESTROYS me. It's damn frustrating. I may have to go back and make myself a really nice shield so I can work on getting blocking up more (currently at 40 something) cause I got bored of sword and board and went back to dual wielding one-handed weapons.

On a side note, Famitsu gives the game a perfect score. 40/40 They do tend to give out more perfect scores these days but the interesting but is this is the first game created in the Western Hemisphere to get a perfect score.

Sure the game is far from perfect and the combat system still feels off to me but when you look at the scope of the game and all the things at your disposal, I think it is a fitting score.

They will, but it will just be things like, "Go to this cave and kill these bandits." or something like that. Really simple stuff, though there are some great quests that can happen if you "accidentally" use your shouts in public places. ;)

Outside of an item boosting your speech, all I have found to improve speechcraft is mercantile stuff. I think I'm about 25.

I've only got 20 hours in so far. But I'm ready for some Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild.

In the story, I find it interesting that the Mages Guild is basically wiped out in Cyrodiil, and only Winterhold has mages in a concentrated study. I wonder if any of the DLC expands on the downfall of mages.

Yeah, pretty much the only way to increase speechcraft is via books, "bartering" with merchants, being able to lie/persuade people through dialog options, or going to a trainer (the Bards College in Solitude).

As for the mages and such, it is definitely interesting that they've been wiped out. There seems to be quite a bit of hate toward the mages in Skyrim and it seems like they are almost being blamed for the Oblivion Crisis, even though it was clearly the Mythic Dawn cult who caused all of that. Maybe they are connecting necromancers with the Mythic Dawn or something? I'm not sure, but there is definitely a lot of hate for mages in Skyrim.

We forgive you if you're already overwhelmed by Skyrim's ongoing notifications of new discoveries -- there's kind of a lot of stuff to do in Bethesda's latest Elder Scrolls realm. But for the rest of you fearless wanderers, the un-overwhelmable, Gamebanshee.com has put together this highly detailed, totally printable map of Skyrim's many, many locations. (http://www.gamebanshee.com/skyrim/mapofskyrim.php#null)

And if you should be so inclined to, say, print out a giant version of said map and adorn your wall with it, the cartographers responsible also have you covered (http://www.gamebanshee.com/skyrim/mapofskyrim/skyrimmappdf.zip)(.ZIP link). If it weren't already clear that you've still got plenty left to explore in Skyrim, this map should handily clarify that. Just look at all that tiny writing! Those are all places!

Great, now I can play from the hard drive.

:D I never bothered uninstalling it, even after you told me about the issues. I knew a patch would be coming eventually, and as my 360 is old, I don't like having the disc drive constantly running, as well as I just plain hate listening to it roar (it's like nails on a chalkboard for me), so I left it installed. I installed literally every game I play. Right now I've only got a 120 GB HDD, so I've been having to pick and choose what games I'm going to play most often and leave installed. Thank God I'm getting a 250 GB 360 Slim for Christmas, so I'll finally be able to leave the majority of my actively played games installed.

And speaking of Skyrim, I really need to get back in this. I've been having such a hard time keeping the rotation going. I spent a week straight on solely MW3. Then I've played nothing but Assassin's Creed Revelations since Saturday or Sunday. Skyrim unfortunately hasn't been in my console since the 20th. Now that I have some free time with having today off of work, I think a day full of Skyrim is in order.

Yeah, it was the first one for the main quest at Whiterun. However, I've since run into two more. I've completely bypassed Iverstead and have headed down to Riften to make some money with the Thieves' Guild. When I first arrived at Riften, a dragon attacked outside the city, and I just a little bit ago left the city, and sure enough, there was another dragon ready to pounce.

I restarted just for the patch and I have seen a ton of weird stuff that did not exist pre patch. I walked into Riverwood unarmed and was attacked by the whole town. Restarted and walked in just fine. Now the guy who is a the mill at Riverwood is gone. Stayed there for a couple days, did the claw quest and still not there. I got up to level 8 finished the greybeards and there was still nobody in any location at any mill.

Think I am going to restart once again and go at it with a difference setup. I have been 2 handed Nord and plan to switch to a Nord one handed with shield and Light Armour. Focus on archery big time.

SmoothPancakes
12-01-2011, 08:45 AM
Yeah, I'm not really welcome in Riverwood anymore. I attacked a couple people who caught me trying to steal from their homes, killed 2 or 3, and got chased out of the village by a bunch of farmers with pitchforks. Only thing that saved my ass was going white water rafting down the river all the way to Whiterun.

Yeah. Definitely not updating to the 1.2 patch as it fixes bugs that don't even happen on the PC version most of the time, or are just minor annoyances. Of course, the bugs that happen are things that I don't care about either (magic resistances are for pussies and dragons flying backwards are just fun) so I might just update anyway to get some of the minor annoyances fixed.

I am back up to level 5 and everything is back to normal. I hate stealing things because you can't sell them. Unless there is a black market I am not aware of.

I have to give the devs some credit for creativity.

Anise's Cabin - I killed the old lady, figured she was a witch and went down to the cellar and found the letter that she has a sister named Moira. I figured that would come back to haunt me. After defeating the first dragon, I had back to town and three thugs try to kill me (they failed, fortunately) but one of them had a note from Moira where she hired them to do bad things to me, killing me would be acceptable but not required.) All this in a side story is pretty damn impressive.

Head to Riften, and join the Thieves Guild. Once you're a member of the Guild, two of the thieves down in the Ratway will buy stolen items from you. I was completely loaded down with things I'd stolen in Whiterun, so I decided to completely bypass the greybeards for the time being and travel to Riften so I could sell off my stolen items to the Thieves.

I've made a nice little profit by going around at night and stealing things from the merchants in Riften, then going down and selling them to the Thieves. Some really expensive things that I've stolen too. It works double nice. You get a lot of easy money from selling the stolen goods, and you get a lot of practice in lockpicking. I'm over level 30 in lockpicking right now.

I'm an Elven Assassin at around 40 or so and the thing I hate is that my speechcraft is kinda low comparatively because all of the items I find and want to sell, are too expensive for shopkeepers. So I suppose I need to start selling really cheap shit like apples and stuff so I can build that up and eventually invest in one.
