Honestly, very little in that that screamed "had to be next gen" to me, other than the fact that you wouldn't likely release that game in time to be this generation.

Hu-uh. Interesting. Would like to see it as a graph where the height of the bar indicates the number of reviews with that score. Otherwise it could just mean that the consoles at the top end of the list (particularly GameCube and the 64) just lacked the horrible crap that ends up at the bottom end of the review range.

As I said with Heavy Rain, The Walking Dead really isn't a game. I'd call it more of an interactive story with very small snippets of game play. Regardless, easily one of the most engaging experiences you can have. It's a little slow at times, but I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the series, especially at $10 for the entire first season. That's a steal.

This is all truth right here.
The "game" is really just a store with adventure-game elements (click here to investigate, click this person to talk, etc.) and QTEs. I was never interested in the game because I don't watch the show and while I find the zombie fad/apocalypse amusing at times, I'm ready for it to die. But, like I said, all the GotY talk and the super cheap price got me to bite the bullet. It's awesome! I just finished Episode 2 and.......well.......it's hitting the fan. Pure craziness. It may not be GotY based on gameplay but it's definitely my Experience of the Year.

Me too. It's not an adventure game after episode 3 and gets progressively less and less after the first game. Even there, it's BARELY an adventure game. It's a story-based experience (like Heavy Rain, but without all the silly motion shit) and really nothing more. If you enjoy the milieu of the game at all (zombie movie), you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing it.

maybe but what if Sony and its arch nemesis MS combine forces and BOTH together with the 720 and the PS4 ban used games? Consumer no choice to revolt other than to not buy ANY console. Not going to happen.
MS has the EXACT interest Sony does here. I think they are probably both developing the technology and then waiting to see if the other is going to do it too.

Yeah, mine are probably 50/50 from Amazon new or Gamefly used. I'm guessing the price will drop quicker for new titles if this is implemented. It already drops fairly quick now. There will always be the built in crowd that has to have it right away (and some games warrant it), and there are the thrifty dudes like us who wait on most titles til it hits a good price. I.E. Well, even worse, it gets rid of the opportunity of sharing a game with a friend by coming over to their house and playing it on their system. If it's linked to a specific gamertag, it's a pain in the ass to do anything with that.
In the end, the only true way to prevent used game sales is to completely do away with physical media. Until they do that, any other way of getting rid of physical media is asking for another DRM issue like EA had with some of their PC games being unplayable brand new out of the box because of broken DRM software (at least, I think it was EA, I could be wrong on the company).

I honestly doubt they would. They don't even have online passes with most of their exclusive games. Sony seems hellbent on it. Virtually every exclusive PS3 game I've bought has some stupid online pass. Plus, with the Vita, unless you do a workaround, you can't even earn trophies with used copies of games, so this news doesn't surprise me a bit. You would think they'd be more focused on the next generation of consoles and actually finding a way to sell the dying Vita as opposed to worrying about used games sales.

Yep. Pretty much the only games I buy brand new on release day are NCAA Football, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Halo, Tiger Woods, etc, the ones I buy year after year. The rest, I keep them in the back of my mind until I eventually come across them in a store or on Amazon for cheap and decide to buy.

I know, I really like mine. It's what I've always wanted in a handheld. It just sucks because Sony is basically screwing themselves over with ridiculous memory prices($100 for 32GB, LOL) and the huge lack of marketing. It also doesn't help that they have virtually nothing coming out because 3rd party studios are basically ignoring it until it gets a bigger user base. Oh well, as long as they continue to support it somewhat, I'll be happy.
I just don't see the point of focusing on used games when they could help themselves in other areas. I mean, seriously...they REALLY need to get a better marketing team. How many commercials have you seen for Halo 4? Black Ops 2? A TON. How about the new God of War game? How about older big titles like Killzone and Uncharted? Virtually nothing. I've seen very little about the Vita, either, so it kind of makes me wonder what they're thinking.
But, I stand by my original statement. If they actually go ahead and do this for the PS4, I firmly believe it'll bomb and it will be their last console they make. With as large as the used game market is, I just don't believe people are going to be willing to go out and buy a console that doesn't support used games.

I honestly doubt they would.I wouldn't. They were the first ones to be rumored to be doing something. I think there's more pressure on them to stop used game sales because of all the pressure from US developers wanting their bottom line to increase. Lot easier for a US developer to put pressure on a US company.

Yeah, I've noticed that. My friend wants me to get Madden 13 (he got it for Christmas) so we can have a sports game to play online against each other (only other games we both have are Halo: Reach, COD games, and one or two other random games), but upon glancing at prices for Madden online, yeah, no way in hell am I buying it right now for $50+. Yes, but even then, Sony would be making more off those people than if they bought used. When someone buys a used game, it all goes to that specific retailer. Publishers don't see a cent. I don't think Sony or Microsoft really care about the used game market, because they literally get nothing from it. However, one part of the equation I believe they're not really taking into account with these anti-used games ideas is "how many people will actually buy a console that eliminates used games?"
For the record, I would. I don't buy used games enough to care, but I know a lot of people who buy mostly used.
I also remember Gamestop saying that if this happens, they would not carry specific consoles that eliminated the possibility of playing used games. Not like it would matter anyway, I'd imagine they would go out of business pretty quick without the ability to accept trade ins and then turn around and sell them for double and triple profits.

Yeah. If we go to a digital-only system, and M$ and $ony get to set the prices? We'll NEVER see sales.
User outcry and lack of sales would push them to have to put things on sale. Steam is a perfect example of something going on sale and immediately being bought in the tens of thousands or more. Every time a fairly big game goes on sale, it jumps up to the #1 sold spot on Steam within a few minutes as people flock to purchase it. Any digital distribution setup that doesn't include sales like Steam pulls off is just shooting themselves in the foot and costing themselves millions of dollars in revenue.
JeffHCross
01-04-2013, 09:46 PM
Steam is perfect example of something that has competition, thanks to Amazon, other digital services and boxed sales. Currently, PSN and XBL are the only options. They could theoretically own the entire market, much like e-book prices were being set by the publisher and there were no appreciable sale prices.

I just don't think the old marketing idea of supply and demand applies as much anymore when it comes to digital distribution. Give someone the option between buying something for less than the normal retail price and it, invariably, causes the overall sell numbers of that item to be MUCH higher than it otherwise would have been if it stayed at the normal retail price.
Hell, ask any Steam user how many games they have and then how many of those games they have played and almost every single one of them will tell you how they have games that they bought and haven't even installed yet, or have installed and haven't even touched since. Now, yes, most of those games they probably got for $5-15 a piece, but when you have 100,000 of users doing that, you have a marketing plan that makes producers of games perk up and pay attention to what you're doing.
I know I've never seen a game developer get pissed at Steam (besides EA, of course or this new shit with Steam Greenlight producing the bullshit that was WarZ and a few games that got rejected because of their content).
JeffHCross
01-05-2013, 09:33 PM
I'm not sure where our disconnect is, mors, but I wasn't saying that Steam isn't a good model. My point was that Steam's sales are as much (though probably more) about getting market share and sales as it is about being nice to their customers. Because, at the end of the day, they have to compete. I agree that it is advantageous for content providers like Steam and Amazon to offer sales. But we also have current examples (e-book prices) where digital providers are not offering sales, where there is no competition between providers (because the prices are set by the publishers), and where there's really no incentive for providers to offer lower prices.
Does a $60 game sell 3X at $20? Maybe. Maybe not. When you look at it from a business standpoint, it has to sell better than 3X to make up for the lost revenue.
Right now, because the PSN is the only way to get a digital title on the PS3, they have no incentive to lower their price. The PSN digital price doesn't even keep pace with the retail price at brick & mortar stores like Wal-Mart and Target, let alone keep up with the price on Amazon, or in used game shops. If that didn't change, and we went to all digital consoles, the consumers would be screwed. You may think that would cause Sony or M$ to lose sales of both games and consoles in the long-run ... you might be right. But we'd still be screwed in the meantime.
morsdraconis
01-06-2013, 07:26 AM
You missed my point man. I'm saying that Micro$oft and $ony would be stupid to not have competitive pricing for their items if they went all digital. They could easily work out a deal with a place like Amazon to have "XBL keys" and "PSN keys" for games purchased through Amazon to be downloaded on the console. Hell, the direction that $ony and Micro$oft both are going with their app setups, they could just have a built in Amazon app that took you to an easy to navigate Amazon webpage that was built like Steam's sale pages to easily convey on sale items and soon to be on sale items.
While, yes, that's part of the market share going to Amazon and such, but, again, Micro$oft and $ony would be insane to stick with their antiquated market ideals when switching over to all digital distribution.
As for the flat out lie that our current internet infrastructure wouldn't be able to handle a setup like that, well, that's just silly. I have one of the worst internet connections you can get (6mbit/s down and .7mbit/s up) and it doesn't stop me from playing games online and downloading all my PC games through Steam. It might take 4-5 hours to get a big game (12-16 gigs) but that's what sleep is for. Just like the FBS Playoff argument about school work, it's just a silly lie to prevent these companies from having to figure out their own infrastructure issues. They say they're worried about the people with consoles that aren't hooked up to the internet; well, clearly, those people aren't your customers are they? It's time to kick them to the curb and move on to the future of game distribution. If they want to play games too, they'll get with the damn program or do without. As long as Micro$oft and $ony don't get dumb and FORCE you to be connected at all times to play their games, customers will be happy to be able to buy their games without having to leave the house.
JeffHCross
01-06-2013, 11:12 AM
And my point is that they might BE stupid. Nothing to stop that from happening.
While the infrastructure discussion is overblown, you do not have one of the worst. Plenty of worse connections out there, some of which I've had the displeasure of using.

Aside from it being a complete abomination to the series, it has DECENT game play. There's 4 or 5 different campaigns to play through with the characters, so it should keep you busy. Just don't go it expecting it to have the same haunting feeling of the older Resident Evil games. Much like 4 and 5, it's all action and no scare.
Uncharted 2 is probably one of the top 5 games of all time, but you would probably want to play through the first one to get the full back story. Uncharted 3 is good but doesn't quite live up to the quality of Uncharted 2.

Wow. 2K has been given a one year license to make MLB 2K13, according to pastapadre.
The license 2K got to make MLB 2K13 is just for the one year. Situation will be reevaluated then - maybe another company going into next gen. This was the only way there could be an MLB game on the 360 this year though and the league recognized that.
What a fucking joke. At this point, it will literally be nothing but a roster update, and 2K12 was already a broken pile of shit that 2K pretty much never bothered to patch and fix, so 2K13 is essentially going to be the same broken pile of shit, just with some makeup and lipstick smeared on. :smh:

Well, first off, he's completely wrong in his assumption that people play FPSs in the way that he's talking about. People playing FPSs for the competitive nature of their design and, most importantly, to play against other humans in that way. FPSs wouldn't be the massive market they currently are if there wasn't a multiplayer aspect to them that enticed people to keep playing. Call of Duty sure as hell isn't as popular as it is because of the singleplayer campaign.
As for his blaming of the developers for continuing to make games like what is currently out, that's the dumbest thing he could possibly say. Again, there's a reason why a new Call of Duty game comes out every 6 months; people buy it. As so many EA haters like to say about their football games, put your money where your mouth is.
Regarding his overall message, the guy is trying to walk the line between a double standard and he fails. He says numerous times that it's ok to play games like that and he enjoys them himself yet, his overall theme is to belittle those type of games and have a "shame on you type of attitude" toward people that play them and the developers that make them.
His general theme is definitely something I've thought about numerous times before. His question about "virtual blood" is easy for me to answer, outside of Hotline Miami, I haven't played a single game where I'm killing humans that aren't multiplayer opponents. I don't play the FPSs that most people play because, truthfully, I find them boring.

First hour into Spec Ops: The Line. It's definitely your boring generic 3rd person shooter (I HATE 3rd person shooters) but, knowing that the story is interesting and, sadly, I've had the twist spoiled for me, I'm still interested to see how it turns out. Obviously, not giving a shit about the shooting, I'm playing on the easiest difficulty and it is, indeed, a breeze. Should be able to plow through this game in another few hours and I can mark off one of the 50+ games on my Steam account that I haven't finished yet.

I have the game and its not a terrible as these reviewers would lead you to believe, honestly I like the game but if you are a diehard DMC fan then I could see why you wouldn't like this game as I have played just about all of them (except the last one)
Honestly I like it for the easy pick and play style I don't have the time to invest in mastering games to that extent anymore, and I can't remember not one DMC that had a good storyline anyway.
Probably the best review I have read about the game IMO, though he is generous at certain points but overall its exactly as described.

January Hardware sales.
Xbox 360: 281K (+4.07%)
Wii U: 55K
55K? For a console that is less than a few months old? This is like the Bizzaro Wii which flew off the store shelves like crazy. Third party support will continue to haunt Nintendo, especially once the next gen systems come out. IMHO 2K13 is the EXACT same game as 2K12 with a roster update. As a PS3 owner there is no chance in hell I'd buy or even rent 2K13 as The Show is simply a superior game and its not even close. 360 owners have to decide if they "need" a baseball game from this year. If I were in their shoes and wanted a baseball game I'd go find 2K12 used somewhere cheap and just live with out of date rosters.

Telltale writer teases more Walking Dead prior to Season 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/25/telltale-writer-teases-more-walking-dead-prior-to-season-2/)
It's been known for quite some time that Telltale's The Walking Dead would have a second season, but it turns out fans of the award-winning adventure series may not have to wait as long as expected for another bite. IGN's Up at Noon had TWD writer Gary Whitta on the show, who teased there's more The Walking Dead coming before season two's official start.
"Knowing that [Season 2] is a way off, and knowing that people are hungry for more Walking Dead...there may very well be more Walking Dead from Telltale before season two. We may have a little something extra for you between season one and two," said Whitta.
Whether the filler is a one-off episode or a mini story arc has yet to be clarified. For all we know, it could a Fruit Ninja-esque game with zombie heads (we sure hope not!). We'll update if any more information shakes out.

Meh, people are gonna bitch regardless. While I was still able to play the game before my CPU fan took a shit, I only once had a problem getting in, having to wait in queue for 20 minutes to get into the Europe West 2 server. Other than that, I got in without issue and was able to play on multiple servers without problem.

While it's interesting, the fact that it's a 3rd person shooter just totally ruins it for me. The game isn't fun, but the story is interesting (apparently there are some pretty significant twists in the storyline at the end - I was trying to play through it to see them, but, I just can't stand the gameplay enough to power through it).

NPD for Feb 2013
Overall Industry:
Overall retail sales dropped 25% year over year.
Software:
1. Dead Space 3 (360, PS3, PC) Electronic Arts
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (360, PS3, Wii U PC) Activision Blizzard
3. Crysis 3 (360, PS3, PC) Electronic Arts
4. NBA 2K13 (360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, PSP, PC) Take-Two Interactive
5. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3, 360) Konami
6. Aliens: Colonial Marines 2013 (360, PS3, PC) Sega
7. Just Dance 4 (Wii, 360, PS3, Wii U) Ubisoft
8. Far Cry 3 (360, PS3, PC) Ubisoft
9. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (PS3, PSV) Sony
10. Madden NFL 13 (360, PS3, Wii, PSV, Wii U) Electronic Arts
Hardware:
For sure numbers:
Xbox 360: 302K (-29.1%)
Nintendo Ecosystem (DS/3DS/Wii/Wii U combined): 455K
Calculated numbers:
NPD: “Looking at hardware sales on an average per week basis, all platforms showed an increase from January into February. Specifically, new platforms like the Wii U and PS Vita demonstrated some momentum from the typical January hardware lull with increases of over 40% and 30% respectively.”
Wii U: (57K/5 weeks) = 11.4k * 1.4 = 16k/week * 4 weeks = 64K minimum, since it's "over 40%". Kevin Dent says it's 80K, though I don't know if that's from him or VentureBeat's statement calculation, since they were the first ones to break the news and read it incorrectly.
Vita: Up 30% on a weekly basis. So, it would follow the same formula above, but with 1.3.

You know the WiiU underperformed again when they start lumping them in altogether. Of course that is better than what Sony provides, which lately has been nothing. 360 continues to dominate in the US.

Times be a changing for many companies. Making money has always been thought of as #1 and keeping the shareholders happy by doing #1. Then along came companies like Amazon.
Great article from a couple years back.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevedenning/2011/09/26/is-the-goal-of-a-corporation-to-make-money/
A growing number of companies have chosen a different goal. They see their bottom line as something radically different. Delighting their customers through continuous innovation has become their bottom line. Making money is the result, not the goal, of their activities. The interesting thing is that when they operate this way, they make a lot more money than companies that focus directly on making money.
Sure they are all in to make money but you look at Amazon's customer service versus EA's and you get a pretty good idea where the customer stands in each companies vision.

On the bright side, hopefully this means some great deals on Blood Stone, Goldeneye Reloaded, and 007 Legends.
Gamers looking to pick up one of the many James Bond titles available online will be met with nothing but tumbleweeds as Activision has removed all the titles from the online store and the Activision web-store. The titles removed include Quantum of Solace, Blood Stone and recently released 007 Legends.
No reason has been given to why the games have been pulled, with many speculating Activision and the James Bond rights holders have ceased their relationship. Whatever did cause the games to get pulled must have been serious, with both in business since 2006, with the contract meant to run until 2014.
Activision has not released a statement letting the public know the reason behind their removal, but we can expect an explanation soon enough. This comes in the light of developer Eurcom laying off some of its workforce and entering administration at the end of the year, with the developer creating three James Bond games that were met with mixed reviews.

If your assertion was more accurate, they wouldn't have picked that camo pattern. Redneck camo is the RealTree stuff you see at Walmart. That pattern on that controller looks like MultiCam, which has been in use by US SF for a while now and is going to mainstream US forces currently.

Finally got around to buying and playing The Walking Dead. MS was having a sale last week, between the first episode being free and the rest of the episodes being something like 200MSP or something, so I said to hell with it and finally bought it. Just finished up episode 2 a few minutes ago. Will probably get through the remaining three episodes in the next 2-3 days. Definitely lives up to the engaging experience that others have commented on. I was sort of weary after playing some of TellTale's games in the past, but this one has lived up to the hype and been fun to play.
Plus it's nice having the decisions I made in episode one deciding comments or actions the others make in episode two (and in future episodes). Other games really need to start implementing that more. Always love the games where a decision I make early on can drastically change the outcome of things later in the game. Just like with The Walking Dead, while the storyline will ultimately play out the same, I'll be more inclined to replay the game in the future just so I can try different paths and choose different conversation options along the way and see how it affects things as the game goes on.

People have long memories, some people who vote for EA could be still pissed about things from their childhood.
And that alone proves that the whole "tournament" is stupid, pointless and a joke. If you're going to hold a tournament for the supposed worst company in America, it should be on what has happened since the last tournament, not something that happened a fucking decade or two decades ago.

It's the only time that site gets any traffic. Look at the Facebook likes and tweets on that story compared to others... :D

I wont agree that EA is the worst company in the world. Not even close, really. I wouldn't even agree that EA is the worst gaming company in the world. Now if someone said "Activision and EA are the worst and most greedy gaming companies in the world," that I would agree with. It sickens me that they can develop rehash shit like Call of Duty every single year and still sell 20 million copies. Seriously, what the hell?

Pointless, yes. A Joke? Pretty much anything that requires voting and humans will always be affected greatly by biases that live outside the score of the intended vote.

Does the consumer not play a part in that equation? Offering a rehashed yearly game is hardly a crime when there is a demand for it. I do not agree with yearly sports releases but there is a demand for it and since I tend to buy them all, that would make me part of the problem. Demand will kick outrages ass every time.

If it is quality, yes. In the examples of EA's football series and Activision's Call of Duty, the level of quality is absent. NCAA and Madden constantly have massive issues with them and Call of Duty is just constantly plagued by lag, host compensation, and a multitude of unbalanced game play aspects. While yes, the consumer buying it is part of the problem, I still blame the companies for putting the product that isn't up to par.

That old hag needs to retire and go pet her 45 cats and yell at people that walk past her house while getting her paper in her improperly fitted bathrobe. She is a fucking idiot.
And I really do enjoy my murder simulators and my guns, crazy old lady. Go cry me a river now.

Christ, I would probably snap in real life dealing with all the fucking fucktards I'm forced to in every day life if it wasn't for games like GTA, able to go around blowing shit up, mowing people down with a car, etc. All my frustrations get taken out in the game and all my desires to pimp slap a fucktard to death disappear.

Yep. For those who actually commit these mass murders, it's not the games that cause them to do it. It's them being fucked up in the head. But lets just continue to ignore the state of mental health in this country, since that would cost money, but instead lets go after something minor like video games. For the rest of us sane, normal people, video games are a release of all our built up stress or rage from dealing with other people in the public all day and all week. Those same games they vilify keep us from snapping after a large enough amount of stress or rage gets built up.

There will always be crazy. No amount of money is going to be able to pick out all the psychopaths. People just take advantage of these tragedies to push agendas on both side of the isle and that is almost as sickening as the act itself.

Very true. They could spend the entire military budget on mental health and some nutjobs will still slip through the cracks. I just wish they would talk about what the actual issue is (mental health of these individuals) instead of blaming it on some random scapegoat like video games. And agreed. Both side of the isle, as well as lobbyists have used the various tragedies over the years for their own personal agendas. I couldn't agree more that it's almost as sickening as the act itself.

What kind of gaming mice if any of you are using these days? I am in the need for and just started shopping. Looking around Amazon and E bay. I found one under 15$ that looks really great for the deal http://www.amazon.com/EMS131BK-Precision-Controls-included-Authentic/dp/B005CPGHAA/ref=pd_cp_pc_0 Not sure how the size of this one would hold up etc. But for the price I would almost pick it up. What do you guys think?

Well I just picked a normal mouse for 15$ at best buy for some gaming use and regular web browning use. It's a Logitech one small enough to use on my laptop etc.

Yeah, I have small wireless Logitech mouse that I bought a while ago here in town. Cheap, but works and gets the job done. Most of my PC gaming are things like SimCity, Civilization, Total War, Crusader Kings II, etc, so I don't really need a full fledged gaming mouse. Just a simple regular wireless mouse is enough to get the job done.

Yea the more I thought about it I really don't need a 50$ mouse just for Sim City and stuff like that. really don't so I went the cheap route.
