Meeting with the AD was today, not sure where info was published that said anything about a decision being made??

All week ESPN, Fox Sports and others were reporting that sources were saying Brown would resign by the end of the week, that the announcement would be made by Friday. It's looking like the sources were wrong, unless something is gonna come out in the next hour.

I can't help but laugh at these NCAA commercials. "Well, just know we're always there for student athletes." :D :D :D

Always there for student athletes my fucking ass! Just look back through all the stories since August of student athlete after student athlete who have been fucked up the ass by the NCAA because of some dumbass, inane rule or some dumbass, inane interpretation of those same dumbass, inane rules, by the NCAA.

I need look no further than that MTSU player who was a marine over in Afghanistan, and was initially ruled ineligible by the NCAA because he supposed played in an organized league, an organized league that was essentially nothing but pickup football games between units in the middle of a fucking war zone.

Yeah, you're really always there for student athletes, if that ain't a giant pile of bullshit. :D What fucking dumbass thought up the idea for those commercials and those lines?

Saban and Beilema whining about it is lame. Somehow LSU shut down Oregon. So has Stanford. Other "speed" teams have gotten shut down.

That being said, Rich Rod is wrong.....a lot of fans do want to see at least defense played. Especially since he couldn't put together a defense worth a damn in the past, allowing UM to be one of the very worst in all of college football. I don't think I've seen a coach do less with more than the RR years at UM. Really felt bad for the players there that got screwed by his crappy coaching staff, and it wasn't the various DCs he brought in (who consequently went on to success elsewhere), it was his cronies and his meddling and piss-poor teaching that did it. Not to mention he absolutely cratered UM recruiting.
Screw RR as a head coach. He may be a really nice guy, but he sucks when it comes to running a program.

Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson has some great ideas... first was the ebay coaching position for the spring game (if you haven't heard about it, read this (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2036464-meet-nick-bhardwaj-the-25-year-old-ceo-who-won-a-college-football-spring-game)). Now, he has teams of players competing in a sort of Fantasy Football but in addition to on the field performance, they also are graded in academics, athletics, student life and community service. Competitions will also be incorporated into the points scale and could include contests such as dodgeball, basketball and wiffle ball.

Read more about it here... I think this idea is excellent.

Student government deems University of Utah fight song racist, sexist (http://dailycaller.com/2014/04/24/student-govt-deems-university-of-utah-fight-song-racist-sexist/)

The student government at the University of Utah has come out against the campus’s 110-year-old flight song, “Utah Man,” which contains lyrics that a reasonable person–like a politically-correct student liberal–would find sexist, racist and transphobic.

The Associated Students of the University of Utah passed a resolution on Tuesday that charged the school’s fight song with objectifying women, making non-males feel unsafe and promoting white privilege, according to The College Fix. The song should be changed to spare the feelings of those offended by the song, according to the resolution.

Criticized portions of the song include its title, “Utah Man,” and a line about Utah coeds being “the fairest.” Here is the full song:

VERSE
I am a Utah man, sir, and I live across the green.
Our gang, it is the jolliest that you have ever seen.
Our coeds are the fairest and each one’s a shining star.
Our yell, you hear it ringing through the mountains near and far.
CHORUS
Who am I, sir? A Utah man am I A Utah man, sir, and will be till I die; Ki!Yi!
We’re up to snuff; we never bluff,
We’re game for any fuss,
No other gang of college men
dare meet us in the muss.
The song does not represent women, or the ambigendered, according to some.

“It did not represent me when I identified as a woman, and it does not represent me now as a genderqueer individual,” said Allison Boyer, a student representative, in a statement to The Daily Utah Chronicle.

And using the word “fairest” as a compliment is demeaning to dark-skinned minorities, some student representatives concluded.

The song was written in 1904.

The resolution is nonbinding. It’s up to university administrators to change the official fight song.

Also (http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57790457-78/song-utah-fight-students.html.csp):

This isn’t the first attempt to change the song, which is based on a burlesque or folk tune called "Solomon Levi." In 1984, a U. vice president floated changing the lyrics "Who am I, sir? A Utah man am I" to "Who am I, friend? A Utah fan am I." And, in 2000, there was an effort to repeal and replace it with a ditty written by a Mormon Tabernacle organist.

Those changes never caught on, but at least one switch did. The song once contained the line, "We drink our stein of lager and we smoke our big cigars," a sentiment that was replaced with the line about fair coeds.

Also, wtf is "genderqueer"?

I've read more terms referring to gender in the past few months than I could have ever imagined.

This is what Wikipedia has for the definition:

Genderqueer is a recent attempt to signify gender experiences that do not fit into binary concepts, and refers to a combination of gender identities and sexual orientations. One example could be a person whose gender presentation is sometimes perceived as male, sometimes female, but whose gender identity is female, gender expression is butch, and sexual orientation is lesbian. It suggests nonconformity or mixing of gender stereotypes, conjoining both gender and sexuality, and challenges existing constructions and identities. In the binary sex/gender system, genderqueerness is unintelligible and abjected.

I've read that four times and I still don't understand. I guess I'm too much of a rube.

Now the dictionary is racist, sexist and transphobic?

This is what happens when people think terms like 'mankind' refer specifically to men and not the human species. We can invent all these new terms but fail to understand existing terminology.

Jameis Winston arrested for shoplifting crab legs at Publix (http://www.tomahawknation.com/2014/4/30/5668004/jameis-winston-arrested-shoplifting-crab-legs-publix)

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BmecVQgIUAAppdh.png

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was issued a citation Tuesday for shoplifting crab legs from Publix, a misdemeanor arrest, according to multiple sources. Winston, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is a red-shirt sophomore for the Seminoles.

Winston has had previous run-ins with the law, but no arrests. He was investigated for an alleged rape, but the State Attorney declined to bring charges due to a lack of evidence. In November, the associated press reported that Winston was questioned about his involvement in a long-running BB gun battle, and that a Burger King reported Winston was stealing soda in a ketchup cup.

The timing of the arrest is interesting given that the NCAA recently approved unlimited meals for student athletes.

This is still our stadium, though obviously a lot of additions/changes have been made and even more are coming in the next couple of years including indoor practice facility (where you see the parking lot below) and enlarging the press box nearly 8 times it's current size (identical to the picture below).

That is much better than a crystal ball which was something I only saw in my grandmother's China cabinet.

I'm the opposite. :( I loved the crystal football and wish they would have kept that incorporated in the new design.

Here is an article from The Patriot-News echoing similar sentiments (http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/07/new_bcs_college_football_trophy.html#incart_m-rpt-1):

The one part the Bowl Championship Series era got right was the trophy. The American Football Coaches Association's crystal football was beautiful. If it wasn't a design masterpiece, it was close. From the stylized three-pronged tee to the fact that the winner could pluck it off and hold it like the very tool of the trade from which it was modeled. It was a brilliant solution to a design question.

And it had become iconic in the best sense. When you saw Nick Saban or Urban Meyer or Pete Carroll hoist that sparkling football aloft, they looked like not just champions but the royalty of their profession. You know they dug it, too.

But when the College Football Playoff was announced last year, it was quietly also announced that a new trophy would join it. The geniuses who run the playoff decided that, after propping up the nonsense that was the BCS for 15 years, that the crystal football had become guilty by association. It's like they blamed the trophy for their own dysfunction.

So, today we were presented with something that looks like it should be given out at, if not a PBA Tour stop, then some anonymous corporate retreat to a million-dollar salesman. Big and over-stylized and uninspiring and designed by a committee of suits.

However, buried in the article is this:

The AFCA has insisted on still handing out the crystal football after the playoff has determined a champion. Which is great. The BCS was never the crystal football's fault.

The winner will still receive it, but apparently just in private? I wonder which trophy will get the biggest crowd pop when the National Champ heads home in January 2015.

From OS...

The wheels are turning and Power Conference autonomy could be coming in just three weeks. The restructuring of the Division I governance board is expected to give the five power conferences the ability to set and govern themselves with rules apart from the traditional NCAA structure. The Division I steering committee agreed to allow the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12 , Pacific 12 and Southeastern conferences until October 1 to put together their first proposals that would be considered and possibly adopted when the five conferences conduct a business session at the 2015 NCAA Convention.

“We are not deaf to the din of discontent across intercollegiate athletics that has dominated the news,” said Mike Slive, SEC Commissioner. “We have created the initiative to restructure the NCAA, in accordance with our vision for the 21st century with the support of student-athletes at it’s core … This is not a new effort on our part. The SEC’s call for change was introduced at Media Days in 2011, and will continue until we’ve realized our desired outcomes. Over the last year, we, along with our colleagues at the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and PAC 12, developed this new vision for intercollegiate athletics for the 21st century. The vision includes the NCAA’s enactment of a governance system that will provide greater autonomy for the SEC and the other four conferences for the benefit of student athletes.”

Basically what Slive and Ohio State AD Gene Smith are saying is that its gotten awful crowded in FBS football and it's time for everyone to recognize the split which does exist in the division.

You might ask why the rest of the schools would go for a plan which, inherently, knocks everyone else down a peg. The answer is simple: If the Power Five doesn't get their way, they're likely to leave the NCAA and do their own thing. That would mean the Golden Goose of the NCAA, March Madness, would go away.

What this means for video games' future is simple: at the very least the Power Five conferences could have rules in place to compensate players legally for their appearances in publicity material, products, and media very soon. It still remains unlikely we will see a college football game officially announced anywhere until next Summer at the very earliest -- but the legal structures for such a product to exist could certainly be in place soon.

Add me to the agree list. I've had my dynasty on here going since NCAA 12 playing with nothing but small schools (FIU, Tulsa and Utah State), not to mention my favorite school is Navy, so they wouldn't be included either. I will eventually end up moving onto the Power 5 conference schools, but I'm not going to buy a game of just those 5 conferences. I want ALL of the conferences. I'm still pissed that we never had the goddamn FCS back in the game after all these years. So if any game company thinks they can piss out a Power 5 conference football game and I'm going to snap it up like a crack addict, they can kiss my fat white ass.

While I don't think anyone should go choke on a dick, we agree in principle. Power 5 Football could be the greatest game ever made. It could be a 2K killer. It could score perfect scores from all outlets. I'll play the demo and I'll watch Twitch streams but unless I could get it for free, I'm not playing it. I'm sure it would sell. It just wouldn't sell to me.

The service academies are HIGHLY unlikely to ever allow their athletes to be paid, I would guess. You will probably never, ever, ever see Navy in a game again.

Hell, years from now we may have a game without Army, Navy and Air Force - but with everyone else.

Just a guess...

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State fired marching band director Jon Waters on Thursday over what the university called a "sexualized" culture.

Waters helped lead the band onto the national stage last year with elaborate halftime performances.

New Ohio State president Michael Drake released a video detailing the issues with the band, which the school said began before Waters' tenure. But after a two-month investigation, the school found instances of harassment that Waters did or should have known about and didn't stop.

I definitely want to read this. It's from Dave Revsine from BTN.

It’s America’s most popular sport, played by thousands, watched by millions, and generating billions in revenues every year. It’s also America’s most controversial sport, haunted by the specter of life-threatening injuries and plagued by scandal, even among its most venerable personalities and institutions. At the college level, we often tie football’s tales of corruption and greed to its current popularity and revenue potential, and we have vague notions of a halcyon time--before the new College Football Playoff, power conferences, and huge TV contracts. Perhaps we conjure images of young Ivy Leaguers playing a gentleman’s game, exemplifying the collegial in collegiate. What we don’t imagine is a game described in 1905, not today, as "a social obsession--this boy-killing, man-mutillating, education-prostituting, gladiatorial sport."

In The Opening Kickoff, Dave Revsine tells the riveting story of the formative period of American football (1890-1915). It was a time that saw the game’s meteoric rise, fueled by overflow crowds, breathless newspaper coverage and newfound superstars—including one of the most thrilling and mysterious the sport has ever seen. But it was also a period racked by controversy in academics, recruiting, and physical brutality that, in combination, threatened football’s very existence. A vivid storyteller, Revsine brings it all to life in a captivating narrative.

To an extent but when I think love/hate the Cowboys and Raiders are the big ones over the long haul in the Super Bowl era. The Patriots as of late. The Steelers never really had any truly "despised or dirty" players in the 70's. The Raiders had a defense full of them and Stabler. The Cowboys had Hollywood Henderson and called themselves "Americas Team." The Patriots have Gisele Bundchen's husband, the video spying and Belichick. Big Ben probably helped bring the hate level up a bit for the Steelers but Polamalu is so darn likeable and respected around the league it's hard to truly hate the Steelers, outside of Baltimore and the state of Ohio.

June Jones has resigned as coach of the SMU Mustangs, citing "personal issues."

"This afternoon, I talked to my staff and players and notified them that I have decided to resign as SMU head football coach effective immediately," Jones said in a statement released by the school. "It was a very difficult decision for me to make, as you can imagine. I have devoted my life for the last 50 years to playing and coaching this game and it has been a great journey."

"I have some personal issues I have been dealing with and I need to take a step away so I can address them at this time," Jones said.

In December, Jones agreed to a three-year extension that would have kept him at the school through 2017.

Yep because those sick actions (of a former coach) helped PSU's football team on the field

Thank goodness the NCAA now has guidelines to clearly state that what Joe did was correct too.

Also I don't know about everyone else but insinuating that Penn State University is pedophile state university is quite a comment. Having followed all of your posts since this I certainly wouldn't expect you of all people to read up on the newly released docs:
“Athletic departments must cooperate with but not manage, direct, control or interfere with college or university investigations into allegations of sexual violence ensuring that investigations involving student-athletes and athletics department staff are managed in the same manner as all other students and staff on campus,” states the executive committee’s resolution that passed in August. It also says members of athletic departments should “report immediately any suspected sexual violence to appropriate campus offices for investigation and adjudication.”

Keep on hating and labeling, I hear it makes the weak feel stronger.

I do love hearing coaches think outside the box. The compulsory warm up stretching period for my son's 10 year old football team just seems archaic at times. And so many coaches in football run tons of agility drills. At the lower levels I see that as largely a waste of time. Focus on teaching kids how to be good football players with football drills. Trying to turn them into slightly better athletes at the younger age group should be way down that list IMO.

Yep, my phone has been blowing up for the last couple minutes with multiple sports sites reporting the exact same. Truly a sad situation for the players and coaches, especially after a 6-6 season, the best record they've had since 2004. First year coach Bill Clark just took this program in a direction it hasn't been in a decade, possibly to a bowl game, and just as that happens, now they're going to up and kill the entire program. All the players over the years who have still committed to UAB and spent their college careers playing for a team that couldn't find any success in a decade, still showing up and working to try and turn the team into a winner, they end up just shoved out on their asses now. Way to go Alabama Board of Trustees. Great job.

Well, if they don't go to a bowl, I can say I witnessed their last game and win in person. And as a bonus, I apparently watched it upside-down.

Edit: It's sad that Alabama and Auburn would schedule other cupcakes (including Southern Miss) instead of UAB/Troy/USA. They lined the pockets of out-of-state schools instead of taking care of home.

JeffHCross
11-30-2014, 10:05 PM
Sadly, I can see a lot of programs going this way. Too many schools need guaranteed home games to make ends meet and the "mid-major" schools are too expensive to bring in. More games are going to match up the extreme ends of the power structure and the middle tier is going to suffer as a result.

Yeah, essentially. We had a press box up there before and the two concrete columns in the middle are from it, but we gutted everything in between those columns then expanded it width-wise (barely went past the concrete columns before) as well as depth-wise.

Here's a previous post I made that does a side-by-side comparison of old and new design.

The Sun Belt Conference appears to have their sights on 12 football members, or at least add some insurance teams to prepare for the next poaching by upper conferences.

Last week it came out that SBC officials have been talking with both Coastal Carolina and Eastern Kentucky about the possibility of them joining. While EKU is poised fairly well to join FBS football, CCU is still building up their football program and would need a few years. The idea is that EKU would join for all sports while CCU would only join for Olympic sports for the first few years. Eventually, both would be full members. At that time, the conference might look something like this:

West
East

Arkansas State
New Mexico St.
South Alabama
Texas State
UL Lafayette
UL Monroe

Appalachian State
Coastal Carolina
Eastern Kentucky
Georgia Southern
Georgia State
Troy

If all of that were to come to fruition, Idaho would quickly be left out in the cold and almost certainly have to drop down to FCS.

SmoothPancakes
08-04-2015, 06:37 PM
I like Idaho, but honestly, it'd be the best for them. No conferences want them because they don't fit outside of the Mountain West, they haven't had a good team in years and don't add anything to TV deals since Boise State is already there and more popular.

If they drop down, they can instantly slide right into a couple conferences without any issue and they can resume their rivalry with Montana and Idaho State and maybe pick up some others in the Big Sky, where as they basically only have two in FBS, with Boise State, which they were on the receiving end of a yearly bitch slapping from 1999 to 2010 when the rivalry ended, and Washington State, which they haven't won since 2000 and have only played one game since 2007.

You correctly answered
