If you were wondering how Ole Miss was able to reel in the nation’s No. 7 overall class this season, 2014 linebacking recruit Clifton Garrett has your answer.

I'm sure it wasn't other envelopes that were handed over as well...........$EC!

Merely the beginning to be honest, with the NCAA changing certain things it's going to be very crazy in the world of College Football Recruiting that is for sure.

Who doesn't think he is going to Tennessee?

Hell, that would drive me away from Tennessee. I hate just opening regular everyday mail and bills. What the hell makes them think I'd want to open 102 different fucking letters from the same damn university? After the first five, tops, I be saying "to hell with this" and throwing the rest in the trash. I have neither the time nor the patience to read 102 different damn letters.

College Football Playoff will be the new name of the four-team playoff, which begins after the 2014 regular season, sources told ESPN.

:fp:

I hear the prize will be called "A Trophy".

Seriously, who in the holy bloody hell got paid to come up with "College Football Playoff"? I weep for the future of this nation if THAT is the best they can possibly do for the name.

And I wonder how much money Jerry shoved into the NCAA's pockets.

Also, Arlington, Texas, and Cowboys Stadium officially will be awarded the first national championship game despite a strong bid from underdog Tampa, Fla. The first title game of the College Football Playoff will be Jan. 12, 2015.

I don't know what your problem is Austinwolv but you are one rude, dumb-fucking kid.

Now children, try to focus on the chart and what its about instead of looking for dumb reasons to troll people you don't know.

Calling me and Austin childish, children and accusing us of "looking for dumb reasons to troll people", when in fact I was plainly pointing out your error in your original post so you would realize that it wasn't posted correctly, then maybe you would correct it so the rest of us could see the picture you were trying to post, I can't say I'm feeling too charitable right now to edit my quote of your original post.

Oh give me a fucking break. That hit was clean. Looking at the replays, his head was up, his facemask and the front of his helmet hit in the chest. It may not have been a fundamentally perfect tackle, with the head to the side and the shoulder pads in the chest/gut, but it was still a perfectly legal tackle.

It was just a very hard hit (Clowney coming at full speed, Smith pretty much in quicksand having just received the handoff), with a possible ricochet of Clowney's helmet bouncing up after planting Smith in the chest, causing Smith's helmet to come off (if it can even be contributed to Clowney's helmet at all). To call that worthy of an ejection, when hits like that have been perfectly legal, and based on the rules, ARE legal, is fucking stupid.

If hitting in the chest with your facemask/front of your helmet in the middle of all the action of a play is "hitting too high", where the fuck are they supposed to hit? Chest to thighs is fair game when tackling. Just let the fucking kids play. All these fucktards trying to turn this game into fucking patty cake is ruining the sport. I already hardly watch the NFL anymore outside of Broncos games, due to all the goddamn rules and neutering of the sport. College is quickly turning into the same.

The problem of why the hit "looked" bad to the ACC was because Smith, the RB, is only 5'8", so Clowney being 6'5" or whatever he is can only get so low anyway. The hit was legit, Hoke appreciated the hit for what it was, and Smith has said the same. It wasn't cheap, it wasn't blind, it was a solid, clean hit.
And y'all should recognize how quickly that little RB popped up, because Smith was as tough as they come as he blocked better than guys 100lbs heavier throughout his career. :)

Some of the concern with the rules is players going too low now and seeing a rise in leg/knee injuries......

Pretty soon it'll be illegal to tackle at all, we'll be watching them play two-hand tap. Defensive players now risk ejection if they tackle too high in the chest and the crew thinks it was an illegal hit. If you go too low, the injury risk in the legs and knees increases, so it'll only be a matter of time before you can't tackle below the thigh. Then they'll find some other reason why tackling in the gut, waist or thigh should be forbidden. :fp:

Like I said, I already can barely watch NFL anymore, other than only Broncos games, because of how much they've neutered the sport left and right with rules. Other than Denver's regular season games and their one game in the playoffs, the only NFL action I watched last year was the Super Bowl, that was it. Never watched any Sunday/Monday Night Football games, didn't watch any of the CBS/Fox games during Sunday afternoons, I just didn't care.

Unfortunately, it looks like college football is going the same way. I wonder how many mores years I'll get before I lose the enjoyment of the sport and the desire to watch it due to all the neutering. :(

Two points that I thought were fun to talk through about the contact rules stuff going on:

1. Both Hines Ward (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/04/hines-ward-if-you-want-to-prevent-concussions-take-the-helmet-off/) and JoePa that said if you want to fix the helmet-to-helmet hits and other cheapshots, take the facemasks off and/or resort to old-school helmets, like the old days.

2. A former Longhorn DB that does radio now was ranting that football in 20 years will literally be flag football, since they are marketing offense and QBs these days anyway.

FAVORITE B1G UNIFORM?
4: Penn State
2: Michigan State; Ohio State
1: Illinois; Iowa; Michigan; Nebraska
What they said about Penn State’s uniform:
“Nothing against the Oregons and stuff like that, but there’s nothing like a traditional, classic college football jersey like Penn State’s.”
“I’m a sucker for nostalgia. I like simplicity. Something clean about the all-white. I just like the formality.”

I've been the same. While Navy has had new uniforms the last couple years specifically for the Army-Navy game (and at least keep them decent and with nods to the Marine Corps as well as Navy, not all over the damn place like Oregon), they still have their same traditional home and away uniforms that they use the rest of the season. They keep it simple, they stick with the traditional look, they don't feel the need to change things or reinvent the wheel every season. Ultimately, I like and prefer traditional. All this constant changing is a waste and half these new uniforms end up looking ugly as shit.

Yeah, while Penn State may be considered plain by some fans, I have always liked their uniforms. It's clean, it's traditional, it's not all busy with a bunch of random crap or logos plastered all over it. It's a good uniform as it is and has been and should be left alone.

Bo Pelini more then likely will be gone after this year. He really has no clue as head coach and is no Urban Meyer.

He cant even get a decent suit with the money he is making at Big 10 media day yesterday

:D My thoughts exactly. The judge had been gone for too long. Then while searching for a better picture to use this time around, that picture/expression popped up and the first thing that came to mind was his expression after reading one of ram's posts. :D From there, it was only a matter of some quick photoshopping.

What has he changed?

Some of it has been tradition stuff. I've heard about a locker room incident regarding the sacred "S" on the floor in there. I won't go into what I was told by the now Strength and conditioning coach at Temple University. But for me it's the little things, while I know each coach wants to make its mark there is value to continuing things former players have been apart of as well.

he can be a good coach....he just gets too involved and is too much of a perfectionist that he wants things done exactly his way. he's too much of a micro manager with how he runs the offense and the team. however, he did assemble a staff that did a tremendous job at trying to reload the cupboards after they were left bare from PC.

the situation that he had to deal with was a very difficult one and only a couple coaches could have came out on top, given the sanctions. he was set up to fail from day one, and he did pretty well considering all of the factors that were against him. but he just didnt do a good enough job.

I actually think that's pretty rude. Yeah, he didn't work out as coach but he's still a human being. That's pretty disrespectful to just leave him basically "on the side of the road" (regardless of it being at an airport or not). The man's stuff was on the bus. Be classy. Meet with him back at the school. Allow the man to drive home in his own car and not force him to get a taxi or call for a ride. It may be amusing but it was classless.

the situation that he had to deal with was a very difficult one(agreed) and only a couple coaches could have came out on top, given the sanctions (this is a vague claim and requires more information than any of us have). he was set up to fail from day one, and he did pretty well considering all of the factors that were against him(did well? why fire him?). but he just didnt do a good enough job.(only a couple coaches could have done well enough? set up? fired for it.........sounds like you should be ticked at S. Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me. You wanted him gone, now that he is gone he was set up to fail? Look, this guy has managed to vindicate Al Davis!! He has gotten his jobs because of his dad, pure and simple. Steve Spurrier's son is a good recruiter and WR coach and will probably get a HC job one day somewhere like LA Tech where Derek Dooley started but really only a gold medal bullshit story artist could land UT and S.Cal as his first two jobs. Well, money talks and BS walks. I'm sure he is good enough to please the folks at somewhere like UTEP. BTW Dooley got UT because of his name as well...........

look at all the crap that USC has to deal with. we had a player take a golf cart ride across campus a couple of years ago and got suspended for a game. half of the sec is getting paid right now and JF is allowed to sign away his image to only lose a half? you can argue anything you want, but no one can argue that USC has been given fair treatment by the ncaa these past couple of years with all the stories coming out about schools breaking rules. we got raped up the ass with their treatment and sanctions. every other school got a resulting slap on the wrist. seriously, losing 30 scholarships over 3 years takes a big toll on your program. we had 56 healthy scholarship players available for ASU, 5 of which are currently being redshirted, so that left us with 51 players. having to deal with those numbers the past couple of years, kiff did alright.

kiff can be a good coach. i'll stand by that statement. last year, we played oregon, scored 53 or 51, i forget and lost. we scored 41 against asu and lost. go to any coach in America and tell them that they'd score 50+ and 41 and they'd still lose the game, and they'd laugh at you. my main problem with kiff, is that once he gets the lead, he immediately goes into conservative mode with his playcalling. he's the opposite of PC, who always went for the jugular. he's just like his dad in that sense, and he is a bit of a control freak. during the WSU game, our rb tre madden, rushed for 39 times. our rb coach wanted to sub in other players, but kiff overruled him. same thing happened during utah state only it was with an o-linemen. for some reason, kiff wanted a particular player playing, who kept missing assignments, instead of the backup, whom the o-line coach recommended.

dont even bother bringing up al davis. he was the ultimate control freak owner in the nfl. kiffin is a tremendous, elite level talent evaluator and it greatly shows because he strongly urged davis not to draft jamarcus russell and instead draft calvin johnson. he's also had far more hits than misses in recruiting.

he was fired because he didnt do good enough. cant be mad as USC because there are only a few coaches out there who could have done the same job or better than kiff and they're all at elite universities. given the hand that he was dealt from the start, he'd get a B for his job performance. unfortunately, I and most USC fans/alumni demand higher.

.

In all actuality USC had 75 football Scholarship players available for ASU. Now that is unless 19 of them truly injured which would bring up a totally different issue within that staff.

The way you made it sound your making it sound like USC lost 30 scholarships each season which would be 90 total over 3 years which it isn't it was 30 total over 3 years. Given the recruiting classes that USC pulls and the talent they have there is no excuse for the terrible job and under performing play from the USC football team. Someone has to take that responsibility and there is no one else more deserving then Kiffin given his track record, and attitude.

Bottom line USC would be in better shape now without him and then firing the whole staff and starting fresh. USC has a tremendous history and it would be easy for them to find someone much better then Kiffin to lead this program back towards a competitive team then one with a bunch of players with the same attitude as their coach.

The kickoffs in that ASU game were a joke as USC players just stood their if it went over their head and their attitude or posture in doing so was not very becoming of a team but of individuals.

whats funny is I have Arizona State on my fantasy roster league I play with friends. I used them because of the point spread but didn't expect that outcome LOL...odd though, not often do you get fired in the middle of a winning record-they were 3-2 after all- I understand of course the quality of wins and losses and conference was sub par but there have to be more reasons than just that..."i'm above .500".."so what ,youre still fired"

he should have been gone after last years bowl game. The fact is I think Haden knew he wouldn't do that good but figured no one else would take the job till some of the NCAA crap had passed, so ride it out for the sanction period. In essence, Kiffin was the ultimate interim coach.

SC hired him because he was the only one offered the job. for some reason, for ad mike garrett like kiffin during his time here in 06? i never said he is a good coach. i said he can be a good coach. he just needs to learn to trust his staff's suggestions, let another coach call plays, and not try to micromanage every aspect of the game but to just let his players play. his recruiting, gameplanning, talent evaluation, and dealing with stuff behind the scenes (that most fans dont hear about) are his strengths. i'll support kiffin because he came here knowing full well that there were probably gonna be sanctions levied on the program, even though the evidence wasnt there to support it. for that, i thank him. the fans deserve better though, because his playcalling has been absolutely terrible this season and last, with the exception of a few games. same plays in the same situations are being called, and the opposing defenses know whats coming. with the talent we have, we shouldnt be going 7-6 or losing to washington state.

sark is gonna be given a long term extention to UW, but his gameplanning for every game is/was no where near as detailed as what kiffin's was. that comes from the 247 sports USC insider who's been with the team the past 10 years.

The kickoffs in that ASU game were a joke as USC players just stood their if it went over their head and their attitude or posture in doing so was not very becoming of a team but of individuals.we dont have 75 scholarship players on the roster right now, so that is untrue. i believe we started the year with 69 scholarship players but have lost 10-13 to injuries, mostly serious ones. i think 4 walkon's were awarded scholarships but they have gone down as well (temporary injuries). add in the redshirts and we're playing with nfl team numbers.

i said we lost 30 scholarships over 3 years. not 30 per year. 30 per year and we wouldnt be able to sign anyone. i agree that there's no excuse for the poor play. our offense was lighting the defense up in spring because coach helton (qb coach) was calling all of the plays in the practices and scrimmages. then in fall camp, kiffin suddenly decides that he's gonna call plays and our offense goes to shit, while the defense plays lights out (except for asu).

we are in better shape without him. we'll keep all of the assistants with the exception of o-line coach james cregg, who was kiff's best bud, and possibly qb coach clay helton.

coaching search names (no order): pat fitzgerald, gary patterson, chris petersen, kevin sumlin, or james franklin. del rio and fisher are 2 nfl names being thrown out there but we'd like to get an offensive minded college coach...not an nfl one. petersen is a long shot because his family feels more comfortable in texas rather than LA.

like i said before, we started with 69 and 4 walkon's were awarded scholarships as they were seniors. simi vehikite is no longer with the team. that puts us at 73 total.

max brown is redshirting unless some disaster happens,
dj morgan and silas redd are hurt,
rogers, mitchell, farmer are all hurt,
banner is done for the year, falah is redshirting, and garness has a nagging injury
townsend is done for the year, simmons is redshirting due to transfer rules,
vehikite is no longer with the team,
hawkins is redshirting barring a disaster, i think shelton is also battling injuries.

so around 58 players for the rest of the season who arent redshirting for sure or have injuries, plus a couple of players who have week to week injuries.

some other frosh players in line for a redshirt are ol rodgers, ilb's hutchings and powell

Officially, it's not cancelled yet. The Department of Defense is waiting until noon on Thursday to make a decision one way or the other on whether or not to cancel the Air Force-Navy game. Word is, from the Colorado Springs Gazette, that they might be able to track down some private funding to pay for travel.

USC never paid bush. cant believe how many people still get that wrong. :fp: :D

nothing sure as of yet, but it'll probably be for mishandling the initial case and for unfair treatment. scholarship retribution is being talked about, but we're mostly seeking damages from all the lost revenue. a big factor here, is the mcnair case and whats inside all of those sealed docs/emails.

one thing is for certain, the ncaa knows they fucked us big time, but they also know that they didnt follow rules or logic in order to fuck us. because of that, this could lead to the current ncaa's death. :D

And there's no fuckin' way WVU covers tomorrow. Anyone betting on WVU to cover is absolutely insane. Texas Tech had no running game, a terrible pass defense (that still held our "vaunted" passing attack to 45% completions), and a bunch of WRs that dropped pass after pass. I was reading some comments on an article and this was posted pretty good ( and very true) read....

It was created end of October so this could have already been posted.

Over the weekend, Omaha World-Herald sportswriter Tom Shatel called Nebraska’s loss to Minnesota “unthinkable.”

Now I get it.

For years, I’ve been trying to figure out where the sense of entitlement that Nebraska football fans carry around comes from. I thought I had it pinpointed to history and a general ignorant understanding of the same. I guess I was only half right.

In addition to Nebraska’s winning history creating certain expectations for fans, the people who cover the Cornhuskers are just as much to blame. Maybe they don’t realize they are doing it, but little things like the word Shatel used to describe Nebraska’s loss feed an unreasonable way of thinking that makes losses to programs like Minnesota unthinkable.

Why is it unthinkable for one college football team to lose to another college football team, especially given the fact that the two have similar geography, a similar recruiting base and the exact same number of scholarships? Why it is unthinkable that programs who turnover 25 percent of their personnel every year might yield different results from year to year. Why is it unthinkable that these programs made up of 18-22 year old kids might perform differently from week to week?

It’s not unthinkable. And this is why Tom Shatel’s choice of words was ridiculous.

College football fans have this irrational thought process that says “if it happened before, it should always happen.” Nebraska football fans could be the poster boys for this school of thought. Again, a school of thought fed to them by the media who produces all content not on the actual field of play from which the fans form their opinions.

On Friday, a local talk radio show was asking callers to call in and give their predictions for the Minnesota game. It was a Husker fan circle-jerk, with high fives all around as caller after caller predicted a double-digit win for Nebraska. Then one caller chimes in with what was apparently an “unthinkable” prediction. He said the Huskers would win by less than a touchdown.

You know that record-scratching sound in movies where when someone who doesn’t belong in a room or a bar walks in and everything screeches to a halt? That’s pretty much what happened on that radio show. One of the show’s hosts immediately replied “YOU THINK IT’LL BE THAT CLOSE?” I like to picture him almost falling out of his chair in the studio, papers flying everywhere. Imagine if the caller had predicted a Minnesota win. Would the station have spontaneously combusted?

When the Nebraska media isn’t busy trying to convince the fans what to think, they are busy asking the fans to think about questions that either don’t matter or can’t be answered. Jon Nyatawa, another Omaha World-Herald writer, published a piece after the game asking fans questions like “Nebraska lost the line-of-scrimmage battle to Minnesota. Is the lack of physicality a sign of things to come?” I don’t know Jon, but I know it’s a good indication of how things are right now.

Nyatawa also asked “How does NU rebound mentally? The road to a potential title game berth gets only more difficult from here.” Win lose or draw, the road to a title game was always going to be tougher after the Minnesota game. Again, the media trying to convince fans just how good Nebraska is or is supposed to be. Rather than look at the loss as a gauge of the team’s shortcomings and overall talent level, the media focuses on it being an unexpected hurdle on the way to a place they are good enough to get to. Maybe they aren’t good enough to get there? Maybe they couldn’t beat a team that Iowa beat a couple of weeks ago on the same field.

*GASP* MAYBE NEBRASKA IS NOT AS GOOD AS IOWA!

No, no, no. That just can’t be. This is Nebraska. Nebraska’s standard is national titles in football (five in over 123 years). We are supposed to rise to the top of this Big Ten conference every year, just like we did in the Big Eight and kinda did in the Big 12. We are better than Iowa…because…because…well, we just are.

Actually, probably not. From what I’ve seen in terms of offense, defense, coaching and just flat out being prepared to compete, Iowa is the better team in 2013. That’ll all sort itself out on the field later.

What doesn’t appear to be anywhere near sorted out is this illogical belief in a football team — a belief that goes well beyond being die-hard fans, blasts past the realm of being a homer and settles right into borderline religious extremism. This belief is such that a minimal amount of historical championship success has dwarfed and eclipsed what it means to be a winning football program (which Nebraska is). This belief has Nebraska fans ignoring and blowing off nine and ten win seasons because the team hasn’t won a conference title recently. This belief has a current head coach on the hot seat — a coach with a higher winning percentage than the overall winning percentage of the program throughout its history.

That belief is almost the textbook definition of “sense of entitlement.” You want more specific examples? Check out some of these responses to a question asked on Facebook by another local talk radio show. The question was “So what is your immediate reaction to today’s game?” Now, naturally you are going to get some heated, knee-jerk reactions, but some of the responses were very telling of a deeper problem.

Sara says “All I can say is that I really wanted Bo to succeed and I’ve been supportive of him, but after this I’m done. This isn’t working. Time for a new coaching staff.”

WOW. What isn’t working? Your team is 5-2. Your current head coach has won 71 percent of the games he’s coached. Tom Osborne won just over 83 percent. Basically, Bo wins seven of every ten. Tom won 8 of every ten. Does every coach need to be Tom Osborne?

Tom (not Osborne) says “Complete regime change monday morning. Let the world know we do not tolerate this in the land of the husker!”

Good idea, Tom. Let’s let the world know that we don’t accept coaches who win 70 percent of their games. Let’s let every head coach out there know that if you want this job, 70 percent is not good enough in a place where our team has won…70 percent of its games historically. Wait a second…

And perhaps my favorite comment, coming from a fellow named Matt. Matt says “Angry, frustrated and depressed. I miss the Nebraska football I grew up watching. I no longer look forward to Saturday’s in the Fall.”

So hold on there, Matt. I’m gonna assume you grew up watching Nebraska during the 1994, 1995 and 1997 championship run. So basically what you are saying is that if your college football team doesn’t win all of its games and the national title, you want to take your ball and go home because this isn’t fun anymore. Hmm…there is a word for that…hang on, it’ll come to me. Is it ENTITLED???

What happens now is we sit back and watch a fanbase cannibalize itself in a civil war over what the Nebraska program was, is and shall become. Steven M. Sipple, columnist for the Lincoln Journal Star, seems to have fired the first shot in the latest battle. He wrote an article following the loss to Minnesota with the title “Husker Fans Should Expect More From Pelini’s Program.”

Of course they should, Steve. Why not. After all, you are telling them they should, right?

Gimme a break. There are 123 teams in FBS Football. All of them, unless they are on sanctions, have the same scholarship limit. All of them play on TV. All of them are essentially playing for the same prize. It is unreasonable for any fan or group of fans, regardless of the history of a program, to expect their college football team to win ten and eleven games every single year while competing for conference and national titles annually. If and when it happens, GREAT! Enjoy it. But as soon as you make that the standard, you set yourself, your fellow fans and your team up for a huge letdown every time, even if it’s only 3 out of 10, you don’t come out with a win.

That is where Nebraska football is right now. A group of college kids is expected to perform at the same level that a bunch of guys did years ago, regardless of the fact that the playing field and rules have changed. Those expectations come from an unreasonable and entitled fanbase, fed those ideals over time by an unreasonable and entitled local media.

I suppose expecting that to change anytime soon would be unthinkable.

Jameis haters need to change their secret ballots now !

http://www.stiffarmtrophy.com/

http://www.businessinsider.com/jameis-winston-is-going-to-win-the-heisman-trophy-in-a-colossal-landslide-2013-12

We've now tracked down 112 ballots, featuring a total of 274 votes.

We're now ready to make the formal call -- the Trophy is going to Jameis Winston.

OK, OK, we're the very last ones to the party. But we've got our mathematical process, and we're going to stick with it. (That's what you pay us for, right? Oh wait...) This is the fewest number of ballots that we've ever had before making our call on the winner.

Winston is going to get approximately 87% of the maximum possible points. (That's lower than our numbers suggest, but our numbers typically overstate the winner's count by 3-5%.) That'll place him in the top echelon of biggest winners of all time -- behind Reggie Bush at 91.77% and Troy Smith at 91.63%, but ahead of Ricky Williams at 85.23%. (No, my friends, OJ Simpson is not the biggest winner ever -- there were just 1200 voters that year.)

We are not, however, prepared to make any sort of formal call as to the order of finish of the rest of the finalists. They are very tightly clustered together. Not much change from yesterday: Tre Mason is in second, Jordan Lynch and AJ McCarron are tied up for third. Andre Williams has slipped a bit into a solid fourth and Johnny Manziel has edged up slightly.

Ballots are coming in very slowly, given the pressure from the Heisman Trust on the voters.

We'll continue to track votes - and hope to get closer to 150 by week's end. Keep those tips rolling in!

For the twelfth year in a row, we're going to attempt to project the outcome of the greatest individual award in sports, the Heisman Trophy. So far, we've been right eleven out of eleven years.

But to do this, we need your help. If you read/see/hear someone identify themselves as an official voter (with or without their vote), post a comment on our voter tips line or send us a note on Twitter (@stiffarmtrophy). If possible, provide a link (or at least tell us where you saw/heard/read it.)

Saban to Texas has become like Gruden to (insert college). I've heard it so many times without ever seeing it happen that it's hard for me to take it seriously.

Texas wants to make such a big splash by throwing ridiculous names out there like Saban, Tomlin, Harbaugh, etc. All that is doing is setting up the fan base for a letdown when they land someone else.

Has anything even happened yet? I haven't seen anything pop up online yet regarding Texas and Brown. Supposedly the decision was supposed to be made by today.

Texas wanted Brown to resign by today because there is a big banquet tonight, and they could use that banquet to celebrate the career of Brown at Texas.
