Gary Andersen is out as the football coach at Oregon State, effective immediately.
The university announced Monday that the parties have mutually parted ways and agreed to release each other from the remaining contractual obligations. Andersen was under contract through the 2021 season.
Andersen signed a contract extension in December and had more than $12.4 million remaining on the deal. Oregon State owed him $883,332 for the rest of this season, $2.75 million for 2018, $2.85 million for 2019, $2.95 million for 2020 and $3.05 million for 2021.
"After many discussions with [athletic director] Scott [Barnes], waiving my contract is the correct decision and enables the young men and the program to move forward and concentrate on the rest of this season," Andersen said in a statement. "Coaching is not about the mighty dollar. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Success comes when all parties involved are moving in the same direction."
*****
1) Something must be looming if Andersen is willing to walk away from $12M, no questions asked.
2) Andersen and Bielema proving that coaches shouldn't be willing to leave Wisconsin. Things aren't always greener on the other side of the field.
3) Perhaps Mike Riley returns to Corvallis (for the third time), solving problems for both Nebraska and Oregon State.

Apparently he said he would not hold Oregon St hostage if he was not able to win. Kinda shocking but he also quit on his team mid-season so no pats on the back either.

Florida and Jim McElwain have mutually parted ways after the football coach claimed that family members and players received death threats last week.
McElwain's claims "created a different storyline and caused a lot of distractions," athletic director Scott Stricklin said at Sunday's news conference.
Strickland added, "This is more than just wins and losses. I'll leave it at that."
Defensive coordinator Randy Shannon will serve as interim head coach. Shannon, who was Miami's head coach from 2007 to '10, was promoted to defensive coordinator in January.
Florida might kickstart the dominoes of the carousel (and ensuing Scott Frost sweepstakes) with this move.
Butch Jones out at Tennessee. Brady Hoke is the interim coach.
With AD Jeff Long out at Arkansas, it's probably safe to assume Bielema is next.

Reports that win or lose, A&M is going to fire Sumlin and pursue Jimbo Fisher.
Silly season heating up. Kent State fires Paul Haynes (does Hazell return?) and Arkansas fires Bielema immediately following today's game.
Nebraska expected to fire Mike Riley at some point this weekend.

Merry Christmas to our Nebraska friends. Now may your Athletic Department pull its collective heads out of their asses and hire a coach who doesn't suck.

The new AD seems to be better than two of our last three, so hopefully he won't screw this one up.

Frost, Fuente, and Campbell are rumored/believed to be on Moos' six-man list of potential candidates.

Tennessee signs Greg Schiano, but backs out due to fan backlash. However, some speculation this may cost UT millions to Schiano as a result.
Tennessee gets turned down by David Cutcliffe. At this rate, they will be lucky to get Tee Martin as HC.
Rice fires David Bailiff.
Tennessee visits with Mike Gundy but he elects to stay in Stillwater.
Penn State OC Joe Moorhead expected to be named next coach at Mississippi State in the next few days, per Brett McMurphy.
Florida State beginning their work on Willie Taggart in case Jimbo leaves for A&M, per Football Scoop.

Arizona hires Kevin Sumlin. A pretty good hire this late in the cycle.
It's early, but Bob Davie is under fire at New Mexico.
New Mexico football coach Bob Davie says he will appeal a 30-day suspension handed down by the university following an investigation into alleged misconduct within the program.
Davie said Friday that none of the three investigations conducted over a nine-month period found he violated any school policy.
"I fully cooperated in every respect and met multiple times with the investigators, but was never asked to meet with or provide information"' to a Chicago-based law firm conducting one of the probes, Davie said in a statement provided by the school.
The Chicago-based law firm, Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, which did not interview Davie, said in its report that it could not conclude that Davie or the other New Mexico coaches and staff members obstructed criminal or university investigations into alleged wrongdoing or attempted retaliation.
