    Help Shape NCAA Football: Cannons

The NCAA Football team is reaching out to the community once again and wants your help in gathering team reference details for an item that will be included in NCAA Football 12. After asking for info on Cheerleader Chants & Band Locations several months ago, they now want your help in acquiring more team specific info - cannon locations.

The team is looking to find out what type of cannons a school uses at their home stadium (either the modern military style, or the classic “western” style), if the cannon is fired after every touchdown, and if the cannon is located inside the stadium (i.e. on the field).

Share your team - or any team you know - info in this thread with a video or photo reference, if possible. A written description would also work, but obviously a photo reference would be more beneficial. Here is the message from the NCAA Football 12 dev team:

We are looking to track down reference for cannon information for each school, so we would like to put it out to the community to help us track this info down to make sure we get everything as authentic as possible as we will be adding cannons into NCAA Football 12.

We are looking to find out what type of cannons a school uses at their home stadium (either the modern military style, or the classic “western” style), if the cannon is fired after every touchdown, and if the cannon is located inside the stadium (i.e. on the field)..

Hopefully we will get responses as quickly and as detailed as we did for the band locations. Thanks again, guys!

Post your school's info - or any you know in this thread.

I expected a massive pirate ship-like silver cannon. But Little Joe, the cannon in the north end zone of Faurot Field, is actually a rather sleek, camouflage-painted artillery piece with a barrel just big enough to fit a canister the width of a jumbo can of soup.

Today, Skipper is fired outside Lane Stadium when the football team enters the field and when it scores.

    Akron

    http://www.armyrotc.com/edu/akron/events.htm

    UPDATE:

    From Quest4Gold:

This is what my brother told me about Akron...

They actually stopped using the cannon since they moved to the Info. The National Guard used to do it, but they haven’t found an area that would be safe to use it. Now when they score the Cheerleaders run the flags through the endzone and they play an AC/DC song (which I doubt EA would be able to use for the game but I digress)

The biggest thing is that they have fireworks every game when the team is introduced (that would be nice to see) and Zippy leads the team out onto the field. Also after the alma mater and national anthem, they play an intro video showing various spots in Akron and highlights of the team while playing a newer version of “In the air tonight” (again music that EA probably won’t add in)

After first downs the announcer does the “…for another ZIPS FIRSTDOWN!!!”, they also some distinctive animations on the scoreboard and jumbotron

There is the info he told me, hope this helps with anything. The fireworks is awesome on their entrance.

The cannon, operated by members of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, is traditionally fired after every Cyclone touchdown or field goal. Additionally, it has been fired on kickoffs and was formerly fired during the Cyclone Marching Band’s playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” - Link

Texas Longhorns -- Smokey the Cannon

    http://www.thefullwiki.org/Smokey_the_cannon

Smokey the Cannon is an artillery piece used as part of the pageantry of college football games of The University of Texas Longhorns. Smokey is operated and cared for by the Texas Cowboys, a University student organization. Smokey is fired each time the Longhorns score, at every kick-off, and at the end of each quarter. The cannon is present for all home games, and for some away games when not prohibited by local rules.

The current version of the cannon, Smokey III, weighs 1,200 pounds and fires up to four blank 10-gauge shells at a time. The cannon was built in 1988 by Lupton Machinery of Austin out of the trunk of an oak tree. Alumni donations were raised to cover the cannon's $25,000 cost.

what about the Texas Tech bell ringer?

I'm actually not sure where/if TTU even has a cannon? I can't recall ever seeing one on TV(it's been a long time since I was last in Lubbock to see a game)

No cannon for WVU, but the Mountaineer shoots his gun when the XP is kicked through and they started doing pushups a few years ago for whatever WVU's score is at the time of the TD.

    Boomer

The Talons began the Fall 1970 football season with a blast as they introduced their newest spirit project, a muzzleloader cannon. The cannon was fired by the Talons cannon crew to signal UNT touchdowns, kick-off, half-time, and the end of home football games as well as special occasions such as University Day. Boomer is a Civil War replica, about two-thirds to scale of a six-pound cannon. It was modeled after cannons originally used as light horse battery by confederate cavalry. Talons worked for more than three years to gild the cannon, receiving donations from many campus organizations to help complete the project. The cannon barrel was cast in Dallas, and Crawford Sloan of the physics shop helped build its carriage. The carriage was built on a trailer and equipped for highway travel so the Talons could take it on road trips. Although Boomer did go to some away games, many stadiums will not allow it because it fires gun powder rather than blank cartridges.

Boomer was originally fired using wadded newspapers. Because the paper occasionally started small fires, the cannon was not allowed on the Fouts Field's artificial turf. Talons cannon crew members now have an option of three firing methods. After the black powder charge is loaded and pierced, the battery unit, a firing squad of the cannon crew can fire electronically, with a live flame, or with the most frequently used brass cap and trigger hammer. A spark is created causing the black powder to explode and results in Boomer’s famous boom.

The 1989 Boomer was also featured in Paramount’s 1991 film, Necessary Roughness. After the film crew saw and heard Boomer fire, they wrote an extra part in the film just for Boomer’s appearance.

In fall 1996, a safety inspector deemed Boomer unsafe due to the deterioration of the combustion chamber. The Talons acted quickly with help from Gus Myers, Chuck Fuller, and Eagle's Nest, and purchased a new 250-pound, 43-inch steel-lined barrel from Dixie Gun Works.

Years later, UNT President Norval Pohl remarked that Boomer would look even more authentic with a limber. After hearing this, the Talons knew Boomer was still not complete and in fall 2007 the limber was introduced. Handcrafted of solid oak, the limber now carries all essentials for firing Boomer and also serves as a seat for Scrappy in parades.

Other cannons have come to UNT and been removed due to safety concerns. Boomer is the only remaining cannon allowed on campus.
Looks like it's fired after every TD as well as on Kickoffs, End of Half, and End of Game.

I graduated from Southern Miss in 2001 so this may not ring true anymore since I haven't been able to attend a game since then but if I'm correct, we have the new military style cannon that's fired after every TD (and after the XP if I remember correctly), and it was on the field, fieldhouse endzone, visitor's side, in the corner of the field.

    Edit:

This first video is the corner of the endzone where the cannon is. You can see the cadets in this video even though you don't hear the cannon.

This video, you can hear the cannon go off after the touchdown.
