    NCAA Cover Vote: Sweet Sixteen

The NCAA Football Cover Vote has reached the Sweet Sixteen. The next round of voting will run January 16-22 to determine the Elite Eight.

The biggest surprises from the second round of voting are Navy at number nine and Kentucky not advancing following a huge wave of votes and support in the first round.

The top 16 features: Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Navy, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, and Wisconsin.

Continue on to read the full press release from EA SPORTS:

The Alabama Crimson Tide led all schools in voting during the most recent round of the NCAA Football Cover Vote. With nearly 10,000 more votes than its nearest competitor, Alabama proved just as dominant in the Cover Vote as it did in the BCS National Championship Game, taking the number one overall slot and positioning itself strongly heading into the next round.

The Crimson Tide jumped from 17th last round to first, showing impressive fan support as they move one step closer to securing the cover. Voting for the round of eight opens tomorrow on the NCAA Football Facebook page, and fans are encouraged to continue supporting their favorite school. Vote totals have reset, so it’s anyone’s race. Will Navy continue to shock the polls with their continued support, or will they fall behind against some of the nation’s biggest powerhouses?

Below are the schools advancing into the round of 16:

    1. Alabama
    2. Texas A&M
    3. Michigan
    4. Ohio State
    5. Oregon
    6. Penn State
    7. Notre Dame
    8. Georgia
    9. Navy
    10. Wisconsin
    11. Florida State
    12. Florida
    13. Tennessee
    14. Nebraska
    15. Texas
    16. LSU

The NCAA Football Cover Vote has tallied more than 1.2 million votes to date. Third round voting will continue until January 22nd, and potential cover athletes from the final eight schools will be unveiled from January 23rd through February 3rd. Cover athlete-specific voting will begin on Monday, February 4th.

Yes! More people vote for Navy! It's our only chance!

Well, I think Navy might be fucked. They got matched up with Notre Dame in the head to head polls. Not sure Navy's gonna be able to get enough votes against Notre Dame to save them, since they'll get only so many in the main poll.

Navy is currently leading ND 550-410, but obviously it's very early. They might benefit from the timing as I would guess there is some Notre Dame backlash due to the Te'o story, even though ND wasn't complicit in the faux/catfish girlfriend situation.

Yeah, I mean Navy does have a chance. I've seen postings on the Navy Football, Navy Athletics, US Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation facebook pages, and even a posting by Commander Marks on the official United State Naval Academy facebook page in the past day or two.

So Naval Academy personnel are doing everything they can to get the word out on the various academy and Navy affiliated facebook pages. Will it help? We'll see. Going head to head with Notre Dame though, the Irish will no doubt get more than their fair share of votes by people. Hopefully Navy will get enough, and Notre Dame won't take many from the Mids, that Navy can at least sneak through to the round of 8.

So, one readily apparent problem with the poll .... the way Facebook makes it, when you have a poll with more than 3 choices, it shows the first three choices and then makes you click a "____ more" button to get to the rest of the option. It is very, very obvious that people aren't clicking for the extra choices.

First three entries (the ones that show without clicking "____ more"): 65k votes between the three (23k, 21k and 21k)
Other 13 schools, combined: 56k votes.

You can't tell me that Alabama, A&M and Michigan have that much better fanbases.

Yep, I realized that as a problem clear back in the first round. And with them ranking the teams 1st to 16th in order of finish from round 2, that means Alabama, A&M and Michigan are basically gonna keep advancing because they'll always be the "always visible" options and some people either won't care or won't realize to know that there is the "more" button to vote for the other teams.

Well, Kentucky did so well in the first round that it masked the problem.

    The latest standings:

A late rally gets Florida State into the Top 8, while Florida's last stand falls short.

Sigh... It's been a good run for Navy. If Alabama ends up on the f'ing cover again, I'm gonna vomit.

Maybe in the Elite 8, it'll be a knockout stage.
