NCAA Football Cover Vote: Round of 8

The NCAA Football Cover Vote has reached the round of eight. Potential cover athletes from the final eight schools will be unveiled from January 23rd through February 3rd. Cover athlete-specific voting will begin on Monday, February 4th.

As expected, the final eight features traditional powers from the college football world. The final eight features: Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas A&M.

Continue on to read the full press release from EA SPORTS:

Today, EA SPORTS announced the eight finalists for the NCAA Football Cover Vote. Alabama carried over its momentum from last round, once again securing the most support and leading the way with more than 60,000 votes. Michigan and Texas A&M have closed the gap however, as voting went down to the final minutes to determine who would take the top spot. With more than 1.7 million votes cast so far across both the primary poll as well as the smaller secondary polls, college football fans have shown tremendous devotion to their favorite teams and that passion will only intensify as the stakes get higher with the final goal in sight.

Voting for the next round begins today on the NCAA Football Facebook page, in an effort to trim the eight schools to four. Vote totals have been reset, so fans can’t rest now as their teams edge closer to taking it all.

Below are the schools advancing into the round of eight:

    • Alabama
    • Texas A&M
    • Michigan
    • Ohio State
    • Oregon
    • Notre Dame
    • Georgia
    • Florida State

In the coming week EA SPORTS will begin announcing the athletes which will be representing their respective schools on Facebook. Fans should check back daily as the biggest names in college football are unveiled, all in the hopes of securing the cover for their alma mater. Athlete-specific voting will begin on Monday, February 4th and continue until Monday, February 18th, at which point the field will be cut to four.

Navy's out and it's pretty much all of the same crap. What a surprise (and joke).

Interesting that this year there aren't many (if any) superstars from the "traditional" EA cover athlete positions (QB, HB, WR). Using Kiper and McShay's 1.0 Mock Drafts the following are potential cover candidates (assuming EA doesn't do something different by putting a Coach/Coaches for a school on the cover)

    - CB Dee Milliner; G Chance Warmack; T D.J. Fluker
    - DE Damontre Moore; T Luke Joeckel; T Jake Matthews
    - T Eric Fisher; T Taylor Lewman
    - DT Jonathan Hankins
    - DE Dion Jordan
    - TE Tyler Eifert; MLB Manti Te'o
    - LB Javaris Jones; LB Alec Ogletree; DT John Jenkins
    - DE Bjoern Werner; T Menelik Watson; CB Xavier Rhodes

That's a REALLY tough sell to the casual crowd. The only names that really stick out to me as being potentially marketing friendly are Javaris Jones and Damontre Moore.

Out of those eight, only Alabama and Texas A&M would be the only two I wouldn't have a problem winning the cover vote. Anybody but Georgia of course. I would hate to see the bullpups on the cover.

Texas A&M are the ones who seem to have a real chance to beat BAMA so that's where my vote lies

Texas A&M or Georgia and I will be happy. Otherwise not so much.

If Te'o is on the cover, I won't buy the game, because I'd be concerned that there'd be no disc inside after I buy it.

If Michigan or Oregon win, I can pretty much guarantee you that Denard Robinson or Kenjon Barner will be on the cover. They don't usually rely on high draft stock players to put on the cover. Not many of the cover athletes have actually been highly successful in the NFL. They'll put whoever the best offensive or most widely known player is on the cover.

"Successful" might be true but "generally" to get on the cover you either need (1) Heisman and/or (2) be a high draft pick at one of the "skill" positions. In fact there are only THREE exceptions to this "general" rule and Tommy Frazier won a national championship the other 2 were from non BCS schools. Otherwise you either won a Heisman and/or were drafted in the 1st round of the NFL draft.

    97 - Tommy Frazier - - National Champion QB - Undrafted
    98 - Danny Wuerffel - - Heisman - 4th Round
    99 - Charles Woodson - - Heisman - 4th Overall Pick
    00 - Ricky Williams - - Heisman - 5th Overall Pick
    01 - Shaun Alexander - - 16th Overall Pick
    02 - Chris Weinke - - Heisman - 4th Round Pick
    03 - Joey Harrington - - 3rd Overall Pick
    04 - Carson Palmer - - Heisman - #1 Pick
    05 - Larry Fitzgerald - - 3rd Overall Pick
    06 - Desmond Howard - - Heisman - 4th Overall Pick
    07 - Reggie Bush - - Heisman - 2nd Overall Pick
    08 - Jared Zabransky - - Undrafted

    09 - Matt Ryan - - 3rd Overall Pick
    09 - Darren McFadden - - 4th Overall Pick
    10 - Brian Johnson - - Undrafted
    10 - Michael Crabtree - - 10th Overall Pick
    11 - Tim Tebow - - Heisman - 25th Overall Pick
    12 - Mark Ingram - - Heisman - 28th Overall Pick
    13 - RGIII - - Heisman - 2nd Overall Pick
    13 - Barry Sanders - - Heisman - 3rd Overall Pick

Looks like Texas A&M's our only hope.

If Alabama wins the cover, and they don't make any major improvements to the game this, I'd be very tempted to not buy NCAA this year, just as my own personal way of giving the middle finger to Alabama.
