    29-31
    Team Stats

    Passing Yards 377
    Rushing yards: 76
    Total Offense: 453

    Important notes:

By a razor’s edge did we win this game. We had to compete with a dual threat QB and those have given us trouble in the past. Gatewood did great, completing 55% of his passes and throwing for 4 TDs. Actually had a solid day of running the ball too. The buzz on campus is that we could actually become bowl eligible this year, which would be great. 2 wins away.

I updated the first few posts with a bit of info. Needless to say, we overachieved this season. I really only saw us winning 3 or 4 games, but we became bowl eligible. Although we didn't get invited to a bowl, it was a huge success getting eligible.

Well it seems like in 2 years that I can beat UCONN, but I just can't get past Syracuse.

    2014 Season Preview

The goal this season is to not only be bowl eligible, but to also make it to a bowl this year. Our first season we won the 6 games, but we also lost 6 games. Our second season was a bit of a downer as we went 5-7, ending the season under .500. Well we have a better team this year, and we are confident that we can have the first winning season in North City’s history. With a better recruiting class and a great offseason we are stronger, faster and more confident going into 2014.

In the third year of North City University football, the program has an overall record of 11-13. This isn’t bad when you include the biggest win in program history against #5 Michigan at the Big House in 2011. This is a contract year, but Coach Mason is in good sitting and will definitely hold on to his job at the end of the season.

Player of Game: Rocky Felder 10 Catches, 210 yards, 3 TDs

    Wrap-up:
1st play of the game is a sack and a fumble. Not a great start to the season. Also, it’s raining. Could this be an omen of things to come? UConn will score on their first play from scrimmage to take a quick 7-0 lead. We would go on down the field on a 16 play drive to only get 3 points. UConn and their rushing attack would prove to be troublesome as they ran the ball great all game; along with their dual threat QB. Our defense holds them to a field goal on their second drive. After an INT in the red zone, we would rebound in the second quarter to score our first touchdown of the 2014 season.

UConn scores another TD to close out the 1st half with a 17-10 lead. Turnovers for UConn at horrible times hurt them greatly in this game. We liked to think it was the New York rain that caught them off guard. And sacks. Mucho sacko. The Felder/Gatewood connection came up big today with 3 TDs and 210 receiving yards from 10 catches including the game winning TD in the 4th. UConn would threaten to tie the game up late in the 4th, but a 4th down INT by Nebrich in the end zone with 53 seconds left in the game was the clincher. Final score: 31-24.

This was a real grind out game. We had a moderate run game going, but the short passing game compensated like always for the lack of real running attack. We tried to use a new playbook, but after today I think we’ll stick with our normal “spread ‘em out and throw all over them” approach that has worked for us the past 2 seasons. This marks the third year in a row that we have defeated UConn. Great way to start a rivalry in my book.

    Battle For New York

    @
    28-21

Player of the Game: Travis Revis 15 Carries, 106 yards, 4 KR 167 Yards 1 TD, 101 yard FR TD

    Wrap-Up:
Starting the season out with both of our rivalry games could be a scheduling nightmare. But judging by the kickoff, we weren’t going to let it be a problem. We receive the kickoff, and then proceed to run it back. YES! Travis Rivas on the 98 yard return. Gatewood goes down with a scary looking injury on the second drive of the game, but the bark of the injury was worse than the bite. It was only a MCL sprain and he would miss the next 2 quarters.

This has to be, by far the worse game that we have played. After a quick 14-0 start, we would be held scoreless for the next 2 quarters. Syracuse would claw their way back into this game due to stalled drives and INTs from us. Our passing game was nonexistent to the point that we only scored 1 offensive touchdown. Travis Rivas singlehandedly put the team on his back in order for us to win this game. And the defense came up big in the clutch. After a missed field goal, Travis would return the missed kick for a 101-yard TD. Then on the next drive, C. Crawford would catch an interception and return that for 62 yards for a TD, which would turn out to be the game clinching TD. Final score: 28-21.

This is our first time beating Syracuse in the Battle For New York. It was an ugly game, but with good defense and special teams we escaped with the win. First 2-0 start in program history. Looking forward to next week’s game against Northwestern.

POTG: Leigh Gatewood 28-45 389 Yards, 4 TDs
    Wrap-up:
We came into this game looking to keep up our short win streak. Northwestern is the heavy favorite in the game so the odds are stacked against us. But there is only one word for this game. DOMINATION. By us. We flat out came ready to play today. Defense held them only to one offensive touchdown. Offense was clicking on all cylinders. Solid rushing game for Rivas as this is now his second game in having over 100 yards rushing. Gatewood had an impressive game, with completing 28 out of 45 passes and throwing for 389 yards and 4 TDs. Defense had 4 sacks and 2 INTs. Final score: 41-20.

Overall, this was a great game played by us. To go 3-0 is a big milestone for the university. We’re halfway to a bowl game this early in the season. Next week we have Georgia Tech, which is definitely going to be a tough game for us.

    Vs. #4
    21-31

Player of the Game: Charles Perkins 20 Carries, 191 yards, TD

    Wrap-up:
The first game in a trio of ranked teams in the span of 4 weeks and we have them at home. It’s a tall order to expect a win, but we had a good chance at winning this game. We kept it competitive. Started the game off with a TD drive, only to give one right back to Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech definitely had the big plays today. The first half ended with a 21-21 tie, and coming out of halftime we felt that we could pull out this enormous upset.
Georgia Tech wasn’t down with that. Their defense stepped up and contained our high octane passing offense to our second lowest numbers this season. They also forced 3 INTs and shut us out of scoring the entire second half. And with their option offense they were able to take control of the game and clock in the second half. We put up a great effort, but in the end we couldn’t win. Final score: 31-21.

    42-21

Player of the Game: Leigh Gatewood 31/54 407 yards, 6 TD
    Wrap Up:
Another quick start to the game. We quickly go up by 14 to close out the first quarter. Defense shut down Illinois for the majority of the game, especially in the first half. Going into halftime we have a 21-0 lead thanks to a 13-yard TD pass from Gatewood to Chase Logan in the second quarter.

The biggest issue we had this game was the inability to deliver the deathblow. We started out the third quarter with a punt, and then Illinois proceeded to score on an 83-yard pass from O’Toole to Whitlow. The third quarter consisted of touchdown trading, as when ever they scored we answered back with a TD to keep the 21-point lead. But with each TD in the second half that Illinois scored it felt like momentum would swing in their favor, but even though we couldn’t deliver the killer blow, we definitely kept them at bay. Gatewood was errant with a lot of his throws today, which led to 3 INTs thrown by him but the defense was able to cover his mistakes and prevent Illinois from capitalizing on them. Final score: 42-21.

Next week we’re hosting #6 Michigan State. We’re hoping to have a sell out crowd for this game as we go for attempt number 2 to disrupt the BCS standings.

    vs. #6
    49-21

Player of the game: Leigh Gatewood 32-40, 477 yards, 5 TDs

Saturday Night Lights. This is our second nationally broadcasted game this season, and for an encore, we were not going to disappoint. After the kickoff to the Spartans, we forced them to punt. We had a rocky start on offense, after marching down the field, Gatewood would throw his only INT of the game, and it was returned for a 76-yard touchdown. Michigan State had a lead of 7-0. This would be their only lead of the game. We end the 1st quarter with a Chapman touchdown to tie the game at 7 points.

After the first quarter, the floodgates opened. During a Spartan drive, the freshman cornerback Griffin caught a pick and took it to the house. After another stop on defense, Gatewood throws another TD pass, this time to the tight end Cohen. At this point, the stadium is rocking. When we defeated Michigan 2 years ago, it was at the Big House, so the North City fans haven’t had a chance to experience an upset yet in the 3 year history of the school. To end the first half, Rocky Felder took a slant route 73 yards to pay dirt to take a lead of 28-7 to halftime.

Last week we had difficulties in digging the dagger in the heart of Illinois. Not this week though. To start the second half, we decided to open up the playbook and run a fake motion screen vert. Felder was wiiide open for an 87-yard TD pass. The chants of “Rocky, Rocky, Rocky” took over the stadium. MSU would take the dagger out by running the ensuing kickoff back to the house, but the damage was done. We end the third quarter with another Gatewood-to-Felder TD pass, this time for 30 yards.

The 4th quarter was all about driving the knife into MSU for a slow death. They would score their first offensive TD in the 4th, but on another trick play the TE Cohen gets a 6-yard TD rush. The final score: 49-21. The students rushed the field in a frenzy celebrating this monumental win for the program. No injuries were reported after the rushing of the field. North City travels to Arkansas next week in search of the 6th win and to become bowl eligible for the second time in 3 years.

    37-31

Player of the Game: Leigh Gatewood 28-38, 434 Yards, 4 Total TDs

Bend, but don’t break. That was the motto all throughout the game today as we were trying to reach win number 6 against a 2-2 Arkansas. The first quarter was a defensive display, as no one was really able to do much in the quarter, until we scored towards the end of the quarter. A missed field goal hurt Arkansas as it took away a bit of momentum they had.

Second quarter was a bit more exciting, with each of us trading field goals and touchdowns. Going into halftime Arkansas looked to have all the momentum, but with an INT in the end zone and good enough field position for a last second heave to the touchdown gave us some points and the lead going into halftime.

We opened up the third quarter with a touchdown run by Gatewood, which is greatly uncharacteristic of him. Arkansas would answer back though, and so began the bending but not breaking mentality for us. Even though we kept giving Arkansas a little bit of hope, we were just trying to kill the time by allowing them to go on long drives and hold them to field goals.

Arkansas would bring the game close in the 4th quarter with a TD, but we were able to score a clinching TD and again allow them to kill a lot of the clock. The final score of the game: 37-31. We’re still riding this wave of momentum from last week’s defeat of Michigan State, and we’re looking to bring that into our next game, which is against an undefeated Army team. This is the first of our back-to-back games with 2 of the Service Academies. Now being bowl eligible, we’re looking to play our way into a bowl game this year and with a favorable end of the season, it is looking pretty good. Sitting with a 6-1 record and a defeat of a top 10 school, talks around the media and coaches have North City right on the outskirts of cracking into the top 25 Polls.

    41-3

    Wrap Up:
Confidence is building for North City. Coming into this game with a 3 game winning streak, they looked to extend the streak against a good Army team who were 6-1. Well, needless to say this game wasn’t as close as it appeared to be on paper. North City, who had faced an offense similar to Army’s a few weeks ago against Georgia Tech, were more prepared for Army’s version of the option. NCU contained Army to only 3 points, as they scored 41 points on Army’s defense.

North City moves on to 7-1 as they solidified a bowl bid, which will be their first one in school history. They look to build on this success and take their win streak back home as they defend their home field versus Navy in 2 weeks.
