When I think of MLB: The Show, I really couldn't tell you much of what has changed in the last few years. It's a great game but between being bored of it easily and the fact that 09 has most of what 12 has, why buy it?

Obviously that's just my personal take but I can see sports games getting to the point and saying, so what CAN we add next.

sports has a defined criteria that all sports fans understand. There isnt anything that needs to be added each and every time. It just needs to be close to what actually happens in said sport.

and maybe some fluff for championships, and AI that competes but doesnt win automatcally

The E3 crowd is the primary audience in gaming. E3, by and large, is a little on the "hardcore" side rather than the "casual" side, so they're probably not the majority of all gamers. But they are likely to make up for that with buying more titles than the casual majority ever does. So we don't need to be worried about E3's audience becoming the majority -- they already have.

Sports games don't make a huge splash on the E3 stage because, similar to what others have said, it's very difficult to make a huge splash with an annual title. Real-time physics is a huge difference maker for Madden (or at least has the potential to be), but most of the audience probably doesn't know enough about what Madden looks like now to understand how different that RTP video looked.

I'd contend that E3 can be viewed much like the Summer Blockbuster schedule. You see a bunch of action movies with a bunch of explosions, to get the attention of the testosterone-fueled audience. You don't see Any Given Sunday or Rudy-like movies in Summer Blockbuster schedule. But NFL ratings on Sundays do just fine

One more thought, and that is that the timing of E3 screws the sports genre pretty badly. NCAA is really the only game that's pretty close to "final" when E3 hits. Madden is probably at least in Beta by now. Everything else is far enough out that you wouldn't want to show it. These games get pretty ugly early in their development cycle.
