Bobby Bonilla signed by the Mets through 2035

Deferred payment: Mets owe Bobby Bonilla nearly $30 million from 2011-2035

Former outfielder Bobby Bonilla, 47, has been retired since 2001 and hasn't played for the New York Mets since 1999.

But, according to the Wall Street Journal, the Mets will pay him $1.19 million a year for the next 25 years.

Mike Sielski of the Wall Street Journal notes that starting in 2011, the Mets will begin paying Bobby Bonilla a deferred payment for each of the next 25 years. Instead of buying out his contract for $5.9 million in January of 2000, the Mets agreed to defer payment at 8% interest, meaning they will pay Bonilla nearly $30 million from 2011 through 2035.

Bonilla's agent was Jeff Borris and the Mets' general manager was Steve Phillips. The money saved back then allowed the Mets to add Derek Bell, Todd Zeile and Mike Hampton to a roster that won the National League in 2000.

When asked about his contract, Bonilla, at the Mets-Marlins series in Puerto Rico, said, "That beautiful thing.''

More players should do this to protect against stupidity before retirement. Mark Brunell should have done this. Instead, a guy who grossed $52 million in his career, has declared for bankruptcy. 8% interest is a pretty sweet deal right now.

Anyone who blows $52 million and files for bankruptcy is an idiot. But that shit in the money market, earn 2-3%, take out even a million a year, and you still die rich. Jesus Christ.
