SAU Wins Again, Blows Out Houston

Houston was the third victim this season in the continuing streak of winning games, now up to 21 straight games, by SAU.

SAU came out determined not to let that streak end as they continually drove the football down the field, scoring on all but two drives throughout the course of the game.

The SAU defense once again played well, but once again allowed a significant amount of yards, though quite a bit of them was in the 4th quarter when the game was out of reach for Houston. Star MLB Allen Sands had another spectacular game, recording 4 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble.

Carlos Marquardt had another solid day on the ground carrying the ball 21 times for 96 yards and 2 TDs before being relieved of duty in the 4th quarter.

Other notable games around the league:

    Clemson 13 - #25 Auburn 9
    #18 Arkansas 45 - #23 Georgia 17
    #9 Georgia Tech 27 - #17 North Carolina 17

    Game of the Week:

    #2 Texas @ Texas Tech
    45-42

In a game that would need a TD by Texas with 2:19 left in the game to win it, it was a game of offenses. Unfortunately, it was more a game of turnovers, as Texas Tech dug their own grave by turning the ball over 5 times to Texas's 2. What kept Texas Tech in the game though were the overly abundant amount of penalties committed by Texas (15 for 95 yards). In the end, Texas Tech just couldn't convert one last 3rd down to put them in FG range to win the game.

    Upset Game of the Week:

    # 5 Nebraska @ Washington
    7-40

A game that surprised everyone outside of the state of Washington, Washington just absolutely manhandled the Cornhuskers, including star QB Jake Locker completing 26/33 passes for 439 yards and 5 TDs to go along with 42 yards rushing on 22 attempts. The Washington offense just couldn't be stopped as Nebraska couldn't muster more than 226 yards on the ground against the Huskies' defense.

That same result with Nebraska and Washington happened in my dynasty. Not the same score, but same result so I wonder if EA doesn't think Nebraska can beat Washington.

    #12 Boise State 41 - #15 Oregon State 24

    Game of the Week:

    West Virginia 38 at #21 LSU 35

In what would have been the upset of the week had it not been for the Virginia Tech at Boston College game, Noel Devine showed once again that as he goes so does WVU's chances of winning the Big East as he ran for 185 yards and 2 TDs on 33 carries and also caught 3 passes for 36 yards and a TD. It would be Devine's touchdown run from 2 yards out with 3:22 left in the game that would be the final score of the game, giving WVU the lead. The defensive star would be Travis Garvin with 11 total tackles (6 solo and 5 assisted), 3 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, and 1 interception.

    Upset of the Week:

#4 Virginia Tech at Boston College
    10 - 24

Boston College came into Blacksburg with upset on their mind and they left to the whispers of a stunned Hokie crowd. Winning for just the 7th time in their 19 meetings, Boston College completely shutdown the vaunted Virginia Tech running game, holding star and Heisman hopeful RB Ryan Williams to just 76 yards and 1 TD on 28 carries.

Yeah, I'm starting to have an issue with it being a bit too easy. Part of it is that my WRs are so freakin' tall, they bail me out a lot but man, wait until you see the Vandy game.

SAU Breathes Sigh Of Relief; Survives Commodores

In what many thought would be a blowout victory for SAU turned out to be the closest game played by SAU since their 10-6 win over Hawai'i last season. The SAU offense constantly struggled to convert 3rd downs, mainly because of poor passing from QB Daniel Kelly, who completed just 15 of 33 passing attempts, a paltry 45% completion percentage.

Defense was the star on both sides of the ball as the defenses combined for 11 sacks (6 by Vanderbilt and 5 by SAU). SAU's defense forced two turnovers, an interception and a fumble, but it would be the big plays allowed that would hurt both teams' efforts.

Vanderbilt allowed a 57 yard TD bomb at the end of the 1st half from SAU QB Daniel Kelly to WR Thomas Moses along with two other 25+ completions to WRs Martin Olsen and Ryan Patrick.

The SAU defense was a bit more stout but still allowed 61 yard and 41 yard TD passes not to mention failing to bottle up Vandy RB Zach Stacy who had 81 yards and 2 TDs on 19 carries.

In the end, sheer willpower from SAU's talented backfield pushed them over the hump and secured the victory for the Monarchs.

Pretty sure Coach Xavier won't allow the Monarchs to look past an opponent again.

    #9 USC 24 - #15 Washington 21

    Game of the Week:

    #3 Florida at #1 Alabama
    17-31

In what many people thought would be a closer game, Alabama ran away with it as QB McElroy completed 32/46 passes for 280 yards and 4 TDs and the Alabama defense intercepted Florida QB Brantley was intercepted 4 times and Florida was held to just 29 yards rushing and 280 yards of total offense.

    Upset of the Week:

    #2 Texas at #10 Oklahoma
    13-30

The Red River Shootout continued it's legacy of insane outcomes as Oklahoma dominated this game from start to finish. The Oklahoma offensive efficiency was on display as Oklahoma converted 13 of 25 3rd downs and scored 4 of their 5 times in the Texas red zone. Neither team had much luck passing the ball efficiently (Texas completing only 33% of their passes and Oklahoma completing just 48% of theirs), but the Oklahoma defense was able to return an interception for a touchdown and that combined with special teams play (Oklahoma kicker O'Hara converted 3 of 4 kicks and all 3 extra points) was what put them over the top.

SAU Crushes Connecticut in 1st ever Chowder Bowl Game

In the first annual Chowder Bowl game between SAU and Connecticut, it was over by halftime as early in the 3rd quarter SAU cleared it's bench.

Carlos Marquardt broke the school's longest rush record with his 92 yard scamper for a touchdown on his way to 14 rushes for 160 yards and a TD.

Thomas Moses showed yet again why he's the biggest threat on the team with two long TD receptions (1 of 59 yards and 1 of 68 yards) on his way to 4 receptions for 209 yards and 2 TDs.

Senior SS Jamie Wallace forces fumble that's recovered by DE Jeremy Bailey

Junior MLB Josh Daniels recovers a failed pitch out from Connecticut and takes the ball 8 yards for the touchdown

QB Daniel Kelly throws a bomb to star WR Thomas Moses for a 59 yard touchdown

Freshman sensation Carlos Marquardt takes a power-O play 92 yards for the touchdown

#15 Boston College 27 - NC State 24 (in OT)

    Games/Upsets of the Week:

    LSU at #8 Florida
    29 - 15

In just one of THREE upsets this week, LSU played hard nosed defense and power football to the win.

    #25 Stanford at #7 USC
    24 - 12

In game two of the three part upset special, Stanford converted just enough 3rd downs to seal the victory, including 2 converted 4th downs along with converting in the red zone to propel themselves to yet another win over USC.

#23 Florida State at #3 Miami

In game three of one of the more crazy weeks in the 2013 season, Florida State kept the strange numbers game going. In a game where FSU converted just 25% of their third downs, FSU scored 5 times in the red zone to Miami's 3 and, in the end, that plus an interception returned for a TD was the difference for FSU in this game.

    Games/Upsets of the Week:

Good god, an even more crazy week of football!

#3 Georgia Tech - Middle Tennessee State
    24 - 21

Boy, what a game! Georgia Tech was taken to the ropes by MTSU but Georgia Tech was able to get the win in the end with a rushing TD with just 1:11 left.

    #22 Florida State - #10 Boston College
    33 - 10

Boston College came into Tallahassee and was just absolutely manhandled by Florida State. Christian Ponder exploded once again going 28/38 for 325 yards and 2 TDs.

    Iowa State - #4 Oklahoma
    19 - 16

In what was going to be THE game of the week (but just wait, there is MUCH more) Iowa State defeated Oklahoma for the first time since 1990 (and only the 9th time in 75 meetings). The game came down to a final drive in which Iowa State drove down to the 36 yard line where they hit a 53 yard FG to win the game as time expired.

    #5 Ohio State - #2 Wisconsin
    21 - 9

Ohio State shut Wisconsin down in all forms (including holding them to 3 FGs in the red zone and no TDs) of the game which resulted in Ohio State running away with this game and ending Wisconsin's best start to their season since 2006 where they went 12-1 for the season.

    #6 Texas 38 - #13 Nebraska (in 3OTs)
    38 - 30

A game where third down was the bane of both offenses (Texas was 5-18 on third down and Nebraska was 1-17 on third down), Texas pulled off the win in the third overtime with a TD and 2-point conversion and then held Nebraska out of the endzone.

Moses torched the UConn secondary. Moving up the Top 25 Poll as well. Looking really good for SAU early. Hopefully, if the Ws keep piling up some blue chip recruits will take notice.

    Thanks.

My next one was my toughest challenge yet! Pittsburgh gave me all KINDS of trouble and the Monarchs had to respond from adversity for the first time this season (the worst kind of adversity too).

SAU Survives Trip To Pittsburgh; Loses QB Kelly

In a game that wouldn't be decided until the 4th quarter, the Monarchs fought there way out of their toughest game of the season.

The game started with Pittsburgh methodically marching down the field and scoring on their opening drive. The Monarchs wouldn't be able to respond and failed a 4th down conversation in an attempt to keep their drive alive. The Monarch defense would step up and get the stop and give the ball back to the offense which would finally find the endzone on a 21 yard strike from Kelly to Moses.

The second quarter would see a flurry of points scored by both teams with Pittsburgh pouring on the most (27 points) with the first being a score by Dion Lewis from 2 yards out to go back up 14-7. SAU would respond with it's own drive and a 31 yard strike from Kelly to WR J.J. Perry to tie it up 14-14.

Pittsburgh would respond three more times, scoring on a 13 yard pass, a 45 yard pass, and a FB blast up the middle but would miss an extra point. SAU would respond just once more with a 3 yard TD pass from Kelly to WR Ryan Patrick.

The score was 34-21 at halftime with the SAU defense looking for answers on how to stop the vaunted Panther offense.

The third quarter would be the quarter that would change everything for SAU. The worst thing that any team could have happen to them happened, QB Daniel Kelly, 3 year starter and school leading passer in nearly every category went down with broken ribs that are guaranteed to have him out until at least the bowl game (which SAU clinches with just 1 more win in conference).

"When I went down," said Kelly. "I just felt something snap on my side and then it really hurt to breathe. I won't lie, I was a bit scared at first."

"It really hurt to lose [Daniel Kelly]," said Coach Xavier. "He's been a big part of our offense the past four years," (he redshirted his Junior year because of a lingering foot injury suffered during spring camp last year) "and being in the Big East now, we need him more than ever but we're confident Pat [Bass, redshirt Sophomore and #2 QB on the depth chart] can keep us going in the direction we are going now. He really showed some moxy against Pittsburgh."

The middle of the third quarter, when Bass took over as the signal caller really seemed to be the true turning point of the game for SAU. The offense started to convert 3rd downs and run the ball more which lead to the only third quarter score, a 4 yard scamper by RB Marquardt.

The fourth quarter was when the offense with Bass at the helm really started to shine, as they methodically marched down the field to score the go ahead TD on a 19 yard power-O run by backup RB Tommy Mitchell

Then Bass put a stamp on his ability to throw the ball with a 53 yard bomb to WR Marcus Olsen that put SAU up 42-34 and put the game out of reach.

"It felt good to have a chance to play when the game really mattered," said Bass. "Everyone goes to college on a football scholarship to play, no matter how important it is for them to play early, they still want a chance to play in the big games, when it's do or die time and this was that time and it felt great to have that chance."

SAU has already announced that redshirt Sophomore Pat Bass will be the starting QB for the squad.

Damn man, that sucks about Kelly. Glad to see the Monarchs pull out the win, but hopefully they can keep it rolling with Bass under center.

In game that would have nearly identical stats for both teams, it was 4th down conversions that would be the deciding factor as it was a 4th down stop in the 3rd OT that would ultimately decide the game.

    Maryland at #17 Boston College
    23 - 20

Boston College dropped another ACC game, this time to the Terps as Maryland just out defensed them in the end. Terps defense collected 3 turnovers to just 1 by the Terps offense which would ultimately decide the game.
