Shame about the loss to follow up the great win @ Duke, but ehm has Louisville anything to do with it?

Well, this game sucked. We never had a chance to get much going on the ground. The very first play of the game, I come out with a run play, UCF comes out blitzing the entire defense. Jake Medlock didn't help any, constantly overthrowing receivers by a mile all day.

My worst fears appear to be true. Our defense absolutely sucks and is not at ALL dependable. Some of those drives, the plays the defense gave up, even allowing conversions on 3rd or 4th and long (15+). This is going to be a rough season if our defense doesn't get their heads out of their asses.

Thank god we get a break and have Bowling Green up next, maybe have hope of a second win before we get smacked around by Louisville.

Damn! I was thinking ahead to Louisville in my mind when typing out that first paragraph for some reason. Correction made.

Another week, more top 10 losses. This week, unranked Auburn blows out #5 Mississippi State 38-6 while Pittsburgh gets the best of #8 TCU, knocked off those horny toads 31-28. #9 Oklahoma State barely escapes an upset bid by Texas, 42-39. #10 South Carolina falls to Georgia, 45-28. #13 Miami (FL) is starting the season bad, falling to 0-2 after being shocked by Wake Forest 39-38. Wake Forest outscored Miami 15-3 in the 4th quarter to win it. #21 USC needs triple overtime to defeat Syracuse, 48-42.

And for you mors, Dana Holgorsen is trying his damnedest to save his job, as the Mountaineers knock off #7 Florida State, 34-31. That bumped his job security rating up to 13%, putting Clemson's Dabo Swinney front and center on the hot seat at 12%.

So far, through the first three weeks of the 2012 season, we as a conference in the Sun Belt suck. All our records combined, the Sun Belt currently stands 5-11 on the year. We sit at 1-1, as does Arkansas State, UL Lafayette is 1-0, Troy sits at 2-0, Mid Tennessee State is 0-1, while Western Kentucky, North Texas, Florida Atlantic, and UL Monroe all are 0-2.

    Game Three

    Game Notes

--- What a tough loss last week. We may not have gotten destroyed by 49 points like we were last year, but to still not be able to figure out the UCF defense and actually win a game against them, frustrating. Hopefully Bowling Green would cooperate for us, since we had to replace the guaranteed win in Akron with them. We were a bit worried as they only lost by 17 to Florida, and beat Idaho 14-9, scoring all 14 points in the 1st quarter. Hopefully our defense would cooperate this week. As it was our home opener, we decided to break out the alternate uniforms for the first time this year, trading in the navy jerseys for black jerseys. Hopefully the rain that was pouring down during the coin toss wouldn’t affect the outcome. Bowling Green won the coin toss, they elected to kick.

Apparently Bowling Green took plenty of pointers from UCF, as we came out in a run play, and they came out blitzing heavy and hard. However, a gap in the defense on 2nd down, allowed Jake Medlock to hit Darrian Mallary for a 27 yard gain, thanks in part to a well timed juke by Mallary that sent a defender flying past him. Unfortunately, things still hadn’t opened up on the ground, as a rush attempt on 1st down only resulted in a one yard loss. Then on 2nd and 10, happened probably the craziest play our offense had ever executed. Dominique Rhymes came out of the backfield, tried to make a sharp cut to his right, slipped and slid on the ground, recovered, got back up and continued running his route. As the same time, the left end beat his blocker and came running at Medlock, his eyes set on a sure sack. However, at the last second, Medlock jumped back and slightly to his left, causing the defender to miss the tackle and go rolling onto the ground behind him. Immediately after that, Medlock threw a bullet to Rhymes, who had recovered from his slip, threading the needle between two defenders for a 17 yard gain. A couple plays later, and Jeremiah Harden was rumbling in for a 13 yard touchdown run.

Thanks to an offsides penalty on our defense, Bowling Green was able to set themselves up with 2nd and inches after a 5 yard run. Unfortunately for them, unlike in the UCF game, our defense refused to roll over, as they stuffed the Falcons offense on 2nd and 3rd and inches, forcing the Falcons to punt the ball away. After our run game got stuffed once again on 1st down, we took to the air on 2nd down. Another slip on the wet ground by Rhymes almost ruined the play, but he was able to once again recover and gain 8 yards. However, instead of a facing 3rd and 2, we were able to get a free 1st down thanks to a pass interference penalty called on the BGSU defense. After that free gift, our offense was able to fall into rhythm, marching down the field, able to get the run game a little bit of success along the way, ending with an 11 yard touchdown pass to Harden with 41 seconds left in the first quarter. Bowling Green would try to respond, however they would quickly go 3 and out, and punt the ball away as the quarter came to an end.

Start of the second quarter found our offense back on the field, starting from our 29 yard line. Surprise surprise, another first down, we call another run play, Bowling Green comes out blitzing the entire defense. We could have had a 71 yard touchdown pass right then and there, if only Medlock had not completely overthrown the WIDE open receiver by a good 15-20 yards. Clearly Medlock had never heard the phrase “keep it in the same area code”. We would make it all the way to midfield, until a holding penalty would effectively kill our momentum and drive. Our defense nearly screwed us, thanks in part to a 15 yard pass on 3rd and 10, and a 15 yard pass interference penalty on two plays later, but they finally held their ground at midfield, forcing BGSU to punt the ball. Our ground game finally started to break loose, as we were able to run the ball 50 yards with nothing but rushes, before we finally had to go back to the air. We were able to keep our drive alive, though we were clearly going to be using a two headed rushing attack this year, as Mallary, for his second straight game, was removed from play due to back spasms. But you certainly wouldn’t hear Harden complaining, as he was using these opportunities to show the coaches exactly what he could do, as he found his way into the end zone for a third time today, this time on a 24 yard pass from Medlock.

Bowling Green was able to advance all the way out to their 44 yard line, however a 10 yard sack on 2nd and 2 brought their drive crashing down, giving us the ball back with just under 2 minutes left to play in the half. Or so we thought. Our dumbass punt return team handed the ball right back to them as they were flagged for roughing the punter. Our defense tried to nearly give them another free 1st down, as they were flagged for offsides on 3rd and 10 from our 26 yard line, thankfully they redeemed themselves with a 10 yard sack on 3rd and 5. With the sack, Bowling Green was forced to settle for a 48 yard field goal with 51 seconds left to play in the half. Facing a very short clock, and 80 yards between us and the end zone, we instantly took to the air. We were able to march down the field in 10 plays, even overcoming a 7 yard sack, as Medlock was able to find Elijah Maxey in the back corner of the end zone on 3rd and 17 to score our fourth touchdown of the game with only 5 seconds left in the half. That would give us a 28-3 halftime lead.

The start of the 2nd half would go much the same as the 1st half did for Bowling Green. A 2 yard loss on 1st made the 7 yard gain on 2nd worthless, as an incomplete pass one play later brought Bowling Green to a quick halt on offense. We were able to continue our success on the ground, driving the ball clear down to the BGSU 33 yard line while taking over half the quarter off the clock, however a delay of game penalty, followed by three straight incomplete passes because Medlock couldn’t hit a damn wall even if it was 5 feet in front of him, brought our drive to an end at the 38 yard line, and forced a disappointing punt. Our defense however would get us the ball right back, as they stood up to the challenge and forced three straight incomplete passes themselves. Our next offensive series, and we went right back to the ground, advancing the ball 53 yards, almost entirely on the ground, all the way down to the Falcons 1 yard line before time ran out in the third quarter.

Start of the fourth quarter, and Mallary needed only one play to punch it in from one yard out. Bowling Green’s offense would again fail to get more than 9 yards, and they were once again forced to punt the ball away. Our offense however would also fail to do anything, gaining only three yards before we too were forced to punt. Our defense started to break, allowing passes of 11 and 23 yards to let the Falcons offense get as far as our 30 yard line, but they would hold to force four straight incomplete passes to give us the ball back on downs. Their defense seemingly started to give us, as our second team offense entered the game, and were able to move the ball at will as far as the Bowling Green 32 yard line before we stalled out. Jack Griffin would try a 49 yard field goal, but it ended up falling a good 3-5 yards short.

Our defense would once again almost break, being penalized for offsides, giving up passes of 16 and 19 yards, and allowing a couple of big gains on the ground, but they finally hunkered down and forced an incomplete pass on 4th and 3 to once again force a turnover on downs. That seemed to just kill their defense, as our second team offense was again able to move the ball down the field at will. This time, we would find the end zone once again, as Harden scored his 4th touchdown of the game on a 7 yard rush. Our defense once again very nearly broke. A 15 yard pass interference penalty, passes of 17 and 11 (on 3rd and 8) yards gave BGSU the ball 1st and 10 on my 16 yard line. Unfortunately for them, things would end shortly thereafter. A 7 yard sack on 1st down, incomplete passes on 2nd and 3rd downs, and only a 15 yard gain on 4th and 17, and they would once again turn the ball over on downs, giving our offense back possession on our 9 yard line with only 59 seconds left to play. Three Harden rushes later, and we completed our (new) biggest victory in this offensive coordinator’s coaching history.

With the victory, we improve to 2-1 on the season. With the loss, Bowling Green drops to 1-2 for the year. Up next for the Golden Panthers, it’s Parent’s Night as we welcome 0-3 Louisville to town. The Cardinals opened up their year with a 23-21 loss to Kentucky, followed by a 28-23 loss to North Carolina, before dropping into a 0-3 hole to start the season, courtesy of a 27-17 loss this week to Southern Miss.

    Stat(s) of the Game:
    - FIU Offense - About as perfect as game as you can have. While Medlock still overthrew receivers a bunch of times, he made some great plays to make up for it.

    - FIU HB Jeremiah Harden - Talk about a breakout game, scoring 4 touchdowns in a single game. Very Al Bundy-esque.

    - FIU Defense – A DOMINANT first three quarters. In the first quarter alone, they held BGSU to 0-3 passing, only 14 yards rushing, no first downs. At halftime, had only given up 21 yard rushing and 61 yards passing. End of the third quarter, they had only given up 26 yard rushing and still only 61 yards passing. Couldn't ask for a better performance.

First, here's a video of that crazy play were Rhymes slipped and fell on his route, Medlock escaped a sack, and then completed a 17 yard pass to Rhymes. I had two videos, this one, and a Broadcast Cameras version one that followed Rhymes from the beginning, so you could see front and center him slipping and falling, but the stupid game saved the highlight wrong, choosing a BC highlight that focused on and started with my QB escaping the sack and then passing the ball, rather than the highlight focusing on Rhymes that I had chosen.

Thankfully, you can still sort of see Rhymes on the left side of the video slip and fall as he makes his cut to go across the middle of the field on his route.

As for the game, I was rather shocked at how it turned out. Bowling Green really wasn't that much worse than me ratings and stats-wise. I don't know if it was the rain, or the fact they blitzed so much, their damn defense spent more time in the backfield than my running backs, forcing me to pass a ton, but they just flopped. Even their offense wasn't able to get a single thing going for the entire first three quarters of the game. They didn't finally start actually gaining yards until my 2nd team defense came in.

Now comes the question, can I pull it out against Louisville. Louisville isn't that great this year, sitting at 0-3 right now. Already off to a great start, I have the chance to get off to the best start ever in Florida International football history if I win to start 3-1. The best FIU has ever done in real life, was their very first year in the FBS football back in 2002, going 2-2 through their first four games.

And what do you know, another week, another top 10 upset. This time, the victims are the #4 Ohio State Buckeyes, who get shocked at home by Cal, 34-28. As for the other games, there were very near multiple top 10 upsets. #1 LSU had to score a touchdown with 1:13 left to play to beat Idaho 28-21 while #2 Oregon barely held on to be Ole Miss 13-10.

Other losses and close games, #11 Oklahoma held off a furious 21 point 4th quarter comeback to beat Missouri 34-31. #13 Virginia Tech escaped Marshall 20-17. #20 USC will not go 8-0 this year, as Oregon State hands them their first loss with a 56-21 win. USF hands #21 Florida State their second straight loss, 28-14, and Connecticut knocked off #23 NC State 14-13.

As for the Sun Belt, only four of us in action this week. Myself and Arkansas State pick up victory for the conference, Western Kentucky and Mid Tennessee State further ruin our record with losses to Hawaii and Illinois. The conference now stands 7-13 on the year.

There's no doubt about that, but it always seems like WVU is the only team that does shit in the Big East in the games (and even they are doing horrible now).

    Game Four

    Game Notes

--- Thanks to a whooping of Bowling Green last week, we came into this game with a chance to improve to 3-1 on the year, and get off to our best start ever in team history. Standing in our way, a 0-3, but ever so dangerous, Louisville team. Louisville put the beatdown on us last year 38-14. We came into this game hoping to get revenge. Under skies full of nothing but sun, Louisville won the coin toss and elected to kick.

Our first drive would make it as far as midfield before the Cardinals finally locked down on defense and stopped us cold. Our defense meanwhile, was a brick wall. Two passes thrown away, and a 10 yard sack, and Louisville was punting the ball from their 10 yard line, giving us the ball right back at midfield. Our second drive would only last three plays before another punt. Despite giving up an 8 yard rush right off the bat, our defense again held their own, forcing a pass to be thrown away, along with a tackle for a 2 yard loss to shut down Louisville’s offense in three plays again. This time our offense was ready to find some success.

Things started moving quickly as Jake Medlock was able to connect with Elijah Maxey over the middle for a 26 yard gain down to the Cardinal 40, before Darrian Mallary screwed us over thanks to a fumble, which was picked up by a Louisville defender, and returned 29 yards all the way down to our 38 yard line. As if Louisville really needed any help, our defense went ahead and gave them 5 free yards thanks to an offside penalty on 1st down at the start of their drive. Our offense nearly never got going on their next drive, but a Medlock pass to Jacob Younger, who was able to beat his defender down the right sideline, and we had a 42 yard gain and a new set of downs. This time Mallary actually kept a hold on the ball as he was able to push us down to the Louisville 9 yard line with some good run blocking. We would however only make it as close as the Cardinals 3 yard line before a pair of incomplete passes forced us to settle for a 20 yard field goal as the first quarter expired.

The start of the second quarter saw our defense again do their jobs, getting an 8 yard sack on 2nd down to cancel out a 7 yard rush the previous play, before an incomplete pass forced another Louisville punt. A 7 yard return by Mallary, and we were starting on our own 40 yard line. A 7 yard sack on 1st down and a 10 yard sack on 3rd down, and that was it for our offense. Louisville only needed one play, courtesy of a 54 yard touchdown pass to jump out to a 14-3 lead. Three incomplete passes, and that was again it for our offense. Our defense would again hold the Cardinals to a three and out, but with the way our offense was moving the ball (or rather not moving it), it wouldn’t do much good. While we were able to gain a first down on the series, our offense would take a hit nonetheless as Mallary went down with a strained pectoral, causing him to be removed from the game for at least the rest of the offensive series. While Jeremiah Harden did decent in the two plays after subbing in for Mallary, failing to pick up two yards on 3rd down resulted in another punt. This time it would take Louisville one extra play, scoring on a 77 yard rush by Jeremy Wright on 2nd down.

This time, our offense would not be denied success, as passes of 11 yard, 10 yards, an 18 yard rush by Mallary, a 36 yard pass on 3rd and 20 that cancelled out a 10 yard sack, would get us down to the Louisville 14 yard line, where Mallary would need only one play to find the end zone on the ground from 14 yards out. A Griffin extra point later, and we were back within 11 points. Our defense, while giving up large gains to Louisville’s running game, was able to snatch us the ball back with 1 minute left in the half thanks to a fumble recovery. A couple quick passes and we were able to get the ball inside the Louisville 30 yard line with less than 30 seconds left to play. Medlock would push us to the brink with two incomplete passes, before finding Glenn Coleman uncovered in the back of the end zone with a 22 yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left to play in the half to pull us within 4 points. Louisville would attempt to respond with the final 14 seconds, but would get only as far as our 40 yard line before time ran out.

Louisville came out in the second half ready to break their lead back open, but our defense had other plans. After giving up 9 yards over two plays, the defense shut down Louisville’s running back for a 3 yard loss on 3rd and 1 to force a Louisville punt. We would overcome some extremely shoddy blocking to get as far as the Louisville 28 yard line before our offense finally collapsed, forcing a 45 yard field goal attempt. Griffin never had a chance of making it. Our defense nearly rolled over and died, but somehow managed to finally pull themselves together and finally stopped Louisville’s offense on our 36 yard line, until the Cardinals decided to go for it and our worthless as hell defense didn’t bother doing anything to stop them. A couple plays later, and the Louisville was in the end zone yet again.

Our offense meanwhile, would go backwards 13 yards, and we’d punt the ball away yet again. Our defense would manage to hold Louisville’s offense in check, and we were able to finally start finding success again on offense in our next drive. We were able to get all the way down to the Louisville 21 yard line before three straight incomplete passes resulted in Sir Shanks-a-lot attempting and (gee whiz, what do you know?) missing a 38 yard field goal. Our defense would come through for us huge, as Emmanuel Souarin would intercept a Cardinals pass to give us the ball back on the Louisville 22 yard line with 22 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. We would advance the ball down to the Louisville 2 yard line before time ran out in the third quarter.

It would take three tries, but Mallary would finally manage to punch the ball into the end zone on 3rd and goal. Coach Cristobal would have us attempt the two point conversion, however the ball was batted down at the line of scrimmage, leaving us still down by 5 points. Louisville was more than ready to answer, thanks in part to two offside penalties on our defense, and an offensive drive that consisted of literally nothing but running plays for almost all of it, before finally going to the air in the final three plays, including a 5 yard touchdown pass to jump out to a 12 point lead with 6 minutes left to play. We would manage to advance the ball down to the Louisville 31 yard line, before a fumble by Harden would give the Cardinals the ball back with 3:36 left to play. They would only need a single play, as Wright would find a couple holes in our defense and weave he way to a 74 yard touchdown rush. That would be the backbreaker for us. Four straight incomplete passes would guarantee us the loss, as we would remain down 19 points with only 2:46 left, and turn the ball over to Louisville on our own 21 yard line. Three plays later, the Cardinals found the end zone again. We would get as far as midfield before Louisville would shut our offense down with 44 seconds left to play. Coach Cristobal would decide to punt this time, and two Louisville rushes later, our loss was official.

With the loss, we drop to 2-2 on the season. The Louisville Cardinals find the win column for the first time in 2012, improving their record to 1-3. Up next for Florida International, a MUCH needed bye week to get ourselves together. Then it’s back on the road to open up conference play as we travel to take on North Texas. The Mean Green come into the game with a 0-3 record, opening up the season with a 45-10 loss to #1 LSU, followed by a 49-13 loss to #14 Kansas State, and falling in defeat 27-21 to Ohio. North Texas also has a bye week next week before their game against us.

    Final Score
    49, 23

    Stat(s) of the Game:
    - FIU Offense – Running game sucked, the passing game was the only thing keeping us alive.
    - FIU Defense – Absolutely pathetic. How the hell do you give up 275 yards rushing, along with 5 passing touchdowns, 7 touchdowns total.
    - FIU Kicking – Sir Shanks-a-lot, aka Jack Griffin, made another appearance, going 1 for 3 in field goals.

Alright, comments on the game. We suck. Our defense is absolutely pathetic against the run. 275 freaking yards rushing against our defense. Our running game was just as pathetic as our rushing defense. We had almost 200 fewer rushing yards, on two more carries. Absolutely horrible. The passing game was our only saving grace of the game. Kicking sucked again like usual. That has really ceased to be a surprise.

All in all, we were able to get lucky a couple times and keep it close, but for the most part, I think as soon as Louisville scored that first touchdown of the game, our fate was pretty much sealed to a loss.

Currently simming through the bye week. Some top 25 games of note. NC State improves to 4-1 on the season, as they hand #6 Nebraska their second loss of the year, 41-29. #11 Virginia Tech suffers their first loss as Maryland improves to 4-1 via a 38-24 victory. It took overtime for Washington, who improves to 5-1, to hand #18 Utah their first loss of the year, 45-42. Texas improves to 2-3 for the year as they knock off #29 Kansas State 27-20. And in the game of the week, #4 Michigan State stays perfect at 5-0, as they hand the #13 Buckeyes of Ohio State their 2nd loss of the year, with a 35-22 win.

Just finished up week 7 recruiting, and got a huge instant commit, signing a WR. So far, my 2013 class is off to a fairly good start with a WR, TE, FS, and CB.

The North Texas game is going to be getting played later on. I was going to play it an hour ago when I finished recruiting, but had to get my game played in the 360 Coach Mode OD. Well, after watching my dumbass team blow a 21-3 lead at the end of 3rd quarter over Arkansas State, give up 29 4th quarter points, and watch us proceed to lose 32-28, I'm right now too pissed off to try playing against North Texas. So after I go screw around in Assassin's Creed for a couple hours and work off this pissed off all to hell feeling by slaughtering and murdering hundreds of guards, I'll play North Texas later in the evening.

I know the feeling man. Thus why I occasionally take a break and play somethin' else. Got to, otherwise I feel like throwing my controller across the room.

Yeah, I was all ready to play North Texas (though I had a bad feeling since they're another 0-3 team, just like Louisville was) as I was just finishing my last hour of recruiting. Then I got a message from Coach Kernzy about my OD game, and so I went to go get that in first, and yeah. After watching that game, I no longer wanted to even try North Texas right then. I knew it would have been a guaranteed loss just because of my mental and emotional state right then after that Arkansas State game in the OD. I may still try to play it later tonight, though it may get postponed until tomorrow, as I have become really damn tired suddenly in the last half hour or so. So I'm not sure if I'll even be awake and alert enough to try and play it tonight.
