As we pass the five-year mark of no NCAA Football, SB Nation's Richard Johnson takes a look at how no college football video game ultimately hurts the Madden NFL franchise, at least in one regard - namely, the option.

Throughout the years where EA Tiburon developed both NCAA Football and Madden NFL, gameplay aspects and features could be shared helping to make each game better. With the option being a part of the NCAA Football franchise dating back to its predecessor Bill Walsh College Football, the code and legwork has existed for EA to share and incorporate it into Madden NFL.

However, now that NCAA Football is on ice, the investment that would have been necessarily made for the plethora of teams that run some form of option football - traditional, RPO, spread, etc. - such as Georgia Tech, Navy, and Nebraska would have been added to Madden. Whereas now devoting the time for Madden to do solely for what amounts to situational (or gimmick) playcalls have proven not to be worth the monetary or time investment.

Johnson's article states that the Ravens with rookie QB Lamar Jackson will have zone-read plays in their playbook in Madden NFL 19.

In a nostalgia-filled week with social media and more reminiscing over memories of NCAA Football, SI.com's Eric Single has taken a look back at the PS2/Xbox versions of the game and how Sports Illustrated covers made it into Dynasty Mode.

Starting with NCAA Football 2004, considered one of the best versions of the game, the top storylines of Dynasty Mode would be surfaced in one of the most prestigious ways possible - on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Ask any college football fan who roots for a team who has won a national championship and you'll be likely to find a copy of SI commemorating their title as a prized possession.

“During the fall, everyone would wait and see who got on the cover of Sports Illustrated in real life—with all the big stories that were going on that week, what would grace the cover?” says Ben Haumiller, a producer at EA who worked on NCAA at the time. “And so you translate that into our world: If Sports Illustrated was just focused on college football, what would be the weekly top story that would grace that cover?”

Just ahead of EA Play on June 9, EA SPORTS has begun the news release and marketing campaign for Madden NFL 19 today by releasing the first game info, the Hall of Fame Cover, and release dates.

Gracing the cover of the Hall of Fame Edition of the game will be Terrell Owens, a 2018 HOF inductee. Despite spending most of his career as a 49er, Owens will grace the HOF edition as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The cover athlete for the standard edition will be announced at a later date.

This year the game will release in early August. More specifically, August 2 for EA Access members, HOF Edition on August 7, and the Standard Edition on August 10. The official press release from EA SPORTS and the Madden NFL 19 website provide the first M19 game details. Today, HB Studios has announced that The Golf Club 2019 will include the PGA TOUR license.

As part of the license, TGC 2019's Career Mode will include Q-School, the Web.com Tour, and a 32-tournament season. The six licensed TPC courses coming to the game are Summerlin, Scottsdale, Sawgrass, Southwind, Deere Run, and Boston. The announcement video and press release do not include the mention of any licensed PGA TOUR golfers. Additional authentic courses will be added to the game while the remainder of the Career Mode will be fleshed out with some of the 'most well-crafted user designed courses.' The press release also includes some additional details on Career Mode including Rivalries and Sponsor Goals.

It is worth noting that nowhere in the press release or video does the word 'exclusive' appear in regards to HB Studios and the license. However, given that EA SPORTS pulled Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR from digital storefronts and EA Access on the same day as this announcement, it would seem EA SPORTS has dropped or lost some, if not all, of the PGA TOUR license.

In a story originally by pastapadre.com, EA SPORTS will be removing Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR from digital storefronts and EA Access on May 22. His belief is that the game is being removed three years following release due to licensing issues. (UPDATE: As of 5/21, the game is no longer available to purchase via PSN or XBL.)

Considered by many to be one of the best in the series, the final version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf finished with a Metacritic score in the mid-70s, while Rory McIlroy PGA Tour scored a 60. After exceeding internal sales expectations, Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR became an 'evergreen' title and featured several game updates that added new courses. However, it lacked the staying power of its predecessor and was considered disappointing by many as the game failed to resonate with the community due to a lacking feature set. ...
