This weekend, the Oregon Ducks (7-0, 4-0) - the top ranked team in the media and coaches polls - travels to Los Angeles to face the UCS Trojans (5-2, 2-2) in a Pac-10 showdown that looks to be their toughest challenge of the season to date.

A year ago, Oregon routed USC in Eugene, winning 47-20 and torching the Trojans' D for 613 total yards. In an effort to try and slow down the high-powered attack of the Ducks, USC first-year defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has had the team run live tackling drills this week for the first time since early in fall practices.

The explosive Oregon offense is the best in the country, averaging 570 yards per game and 55 points per game. The Ducks have also been opportunistic as they rank first nationally with a +1.71 turnover margin. Heisman Trophy candidiate RB LaMichael James leads the nation with 162 yards per game on the ground.

Can USC prove they are still among the nation's best despite NCAA sanctions? Or will Oregon steamroll to another victory? Check back later today to see the video preview for Oregon vs. USC. ...

The week's Game of the Week Preview takes us to LSU vs. Auburn for a showdown between two undefeated 7-0 squads in which the winner will stand alone atop the SEC West.

What LSU lacks in offensive firepower, they make up for in luck. The Tigers have emerged victorious in close games against North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Florida. While the offense has struggled (92nd nationally in total offense), the defense has been spectacular (3rd nationally in total defense). LSU is led by all-around talent, Patrick Peterson. The junior from Pompano Beach, FL has been a lockdown CB on the defensive side of the ball and a threat on special teams, ranking fourth nationally in punt returns and 18th in kick returns.

Auburn has also put a strain on the heart of their fans with their share of close victories against Mississippi State, Clemson, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Dual-threat QB Cam Newton leads the Tigers averaging over 300 yards of total offense, including 123 YPG on the ground. The Auburn defense allows 367 yards per game and was torched for 566 total yards in their last outing, a 65-43 comeback win versus Arkansas.

On paper, this Game of the Week does not appear to be special - a 5-0 Top 5 Nebraska team playing at home versus a talented, but under-performing 3-2 Texas squad. However, for fans of each team - particularly Nebraska - this game carries significant meaning.

Since the inception of the Big 12, Texas has had Nebraska's number, going 8-1 versus the Big Red including two conference championships. The losses have typically been heartbreaking for the Huskers:

The Huskers offense has kicked into high gear behind the legs of rFr Qb Taylor Martinez. The unheralded recruit from California ranks fourth nationally in rush yards per game and finds himself in early Heisman Trophy consideration. The Texas defense is stout, however their offense is one of the worst of the Mack Brown era, ranking just 71st nationally in total offense. The Longhorns have lost two in a row and are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak since the 1999 season.

In their final season as a member of the Big 12, will Nebraska take out 15 years of frustration on Texas or will the Longhorns break the collective hearts of Husker Nation one last time? In the latest edition of The Gaming Tailgate's Game of the Week, we head up to Ann Arbor where the Wolverines and Spartans each enter the game at 5-0. The winner will get huge bragging rights within the state and also stay tied atop the Big Ten Standings.

Michigan is led by sensational QB Denard Robinson who leads the country in rushing (181 YPG), is second in total offense, and is fourth in passing efficiency. His explosive skills have him among the early Heisman Trophy hopefuls according to StiffArmTrophy.com and he has led UM to a 3-0 record in games decided by seven points or less. The Achilles' heel for the Wolverines is clearly their defense as they rank 102nd in total defense nationally.

The Spartans have rolled to an impressive 5-0 start, highlighted by their stunning overtime victory against Notre Dame and a win over Wisconsin. Not to be outdone by Robinson, MSU QB Kirk Cousins ranks 13th nationally in passing efficiency. The defense has been solid, led by superb linebackers Greg Jones and Eric Gordon.

Our latest Game of the Week finds us in Eugene for a battle between Top Ten teams - Stanford vs. Oregon.

Stanford is led by Andrew Luck, considered by many (outside of Bristol, CT) to be the top QB prospect in the country. The Cardinal have rolled through the season with impressive wins versus UCLA, Wake Forest, and Notre Dame. Balance has been the key for Jim Harbaugh's team as they average 223 yards per game on the ground and 234 yards through the air.

The Ducks enter this match-up as one of the top offenses in the country. With their dangerous spread attack, Oregon ranks 3rd nationally in rushing (321 YPG), 3rd in total offense (560 YPG), and first in scoring offense (58 PPG). They have been aided by an opportunistic defense that leads the nation in turnover margin and a pass efficiency defense that ranks second nationally. The defense has been aided by three big wins, but in their last game versus Arizona State, ASU racked up 597 yards of total offense only to be undone by four interceptions.

Who will win this Top Ten showdown? Will the winner go on to win the Pac-10 and contend for the National Championship? Will there even be a punt in this game?

This week's Game of the Week follows the College GameDay crew to Auburn, Alabama for Clemson at Auburn. Each program finds themselves in a state of rebuilding.

Clemson's Dabo Swinney took over the reigns of the program midway through the 2008 season following the resignation of Tommy Bowden. Swinney has a 15-8 record (9-4 ACC) as Clemson head coach.

After being one of the most heralded assistant coaches in the country, Gene Chizik spent two years as head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones. In his time at ISU, Chizik went just 5-19 and left in controversial fashion. In his first season at Auburn, Chizik and the Tigers went 10-5 with an exciting Outback Bowl victory over Northwestern.

The weekend may not contain huge top ten showdowns, but there are many match-ups that will help clear up the Top 25 picture. Nebraska travels to Washington to face their first BCS conference foe of the season, Iowa and Arizona battle in the desert, Texas Tech looks to pull another upset against Texas in Lubbock, and Wisconsin looks for an impressive home win to prove they are worthy of the top ten.

On a weekend filled with big games - Florida State at Oklahoma, Miami at Ohio State, Michigan at Notre Dame, Oregon at Tennessee - our Game of the Week Preview highlights Penn State visiting the defending National Champions, Alabama in a battle between two of the most storied programs in college football.

Penn State started Robert Golden at quarterback - the first true freshman to start at QB for the Nittany Lions in Joe Paterno's 45 year career - and led the team to a 44-14 win over Youngstown State. While the team trailed for much of the first half, they pulled away by scoring 41 unanswered points.

Alabama will take the field in their first real test as defending National Champions. In their season opener, the Crimson Tide looked impressive in routing San Jose State 48-3. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner RB Mark Ingram did not play versus the Spartans as he recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery and may not play versus PSU. Defensive end Marcell Dareus sat out after being ruled ineligible for two games due to accepting improper benefits from an agent. The losses did not hurt the talented and loaded Alabama roster.

College Football is Here! Another season kicks off tonight and with it a new feature here at The Gaming Tailgate begins. Each week of the season, we will use NCAA Football 11 to preview & sim the top Game of the Week. The biggest game on the schedule to kick off the season is Boise State vs. Virginia Tech in a game to be played at FedEx Field in Washington, DC on Monday night.

The Broncos enter the game with a 14-game win streak and have prevailed in 26 of their last 27 games. A win versus the Hokies in what is sure to be a hostile environment and virtual home game for VT would put Boise State in position to contend for the National Championship. A loss all but ends those hopes.

The Hokies enter the 2010 season on a five-game win streak after three losses in 2009 by a combined 18 points. Despite being a top ten team, they are not on many expert's short lists to contend for the National Championship and a win here would change that quickly. To say this is a huge game for both teams would be an understatement.

The two teams will be wearing newly unveiled Nike Pro Combat uniforms. See them in advance here: Boise State - Virginia Tech

Yesterday, we looked at Team Pitches when Recruiting in NCAA Football 11's Dynasty Mode. Today, designer Ben Haumiller shares with us his commentary on how the default Team Pitch ratings are determined.

Every year we take a look at the ratings from the previous year and look to see what makes sense to change for this year. Most of these are 100% perception, but a few of them have a pretty easy way to determine the ratings. When determining the ratings, a most of the time the decision comes down to how we feel a school would treat that pitch when recruiting for/against a particular school. For example, Florida’s Program Stability rating took a big hit this year. That was partly because of the number of assistant coaches that left the program this off-season, but also in a large part because of Meyer’s mini-Christmas breakdown. There’s not a coach in the country that won’t attack that angle until he proves it was a fluke moment. Conversely, when Coach McMackin is sitting in a kid’s living room trying to convince him to come to Hawaii you better believe he’s talking up the concept of living in Hawaii for 4 years as a great reason to become a Warrior.

NCAA Football designer Russ Kiniry has posted a new blog discussing changes to online ranked games, issues accessing online dynasties, and an upcoming patch.

    From Russ:
NCAA Football 11 fans have provided a ton of feedback this year, and since the release, we've been working hard here at Tiburon to address your top concerns. Near the top of the list of feedback we've gathered is how wins and losses are tracked in Ranked games that end in the first half.

Our objective has always been to make our leader boards free of cheaters. It was with this objective in mind that we previously changed the system so it does not award wins or losses if someone quits before the first half is over. However, as of the server maintenance this morning, we've changed how wins and losses are tracked once again. Now, wins and losses are counted regardless of when you (or your opponent) quit the game. If you jump out to an early lead and your opponent quits, you will still receive credit for the victory.

In an interview with Steven Bartlett of Operation Sports, Madden NFL creative director Ian Cummings discussed the future goals of the franchise and also detailed locomotion, a feature common to the central gameplay of both Madden NFL 11 and NCAA Football 11.

Cummings talked about locomotion in the game and how there was discussion of adding triggers and bumpers to the mix (along with the right stick), but those ideas were put on hold for a year or two to allow gamers to 'train' themselves for the moves on the right stick and no speed burst on the right trigger. He also shares some tips on the auto-speed burst - always try to run straight ahead to reach top speed quickly.
