• Breakdown: Inside Zone vs Odd Stack Front

Here I am covering the inside zone versus an odd stack front.

    Ace Normal

    Play 1:

Initial movement is bad, the play is being run to the right and all the linemen are stepping to the left. With the linebackers playing to the flow of the ball this puts every blocker out of position. The tight end does not block man on against the strong safety leaving him completely unaccounted for in the blocking scheme. The tight end and tackle double the defensive end, with the Sam linebacker flowing over the top this now put both him and the safety outside the tight end to play any front side cut by the running back. The guard and center double the nose tackle leaving the Mike linebacker to flow over the top. The back side guard releases to the Will linebacker and the back side tackle and tight end block man on against the defensive end and weak safety. In all honesty the blocking on this play looks a lot like a pull scheme with no blockers pulling to the play side. The blocking is completely wrong.

    Play 2:

The blocking on this play is exactly like play one, however there was just enough back side daylight to cut back and get a nice gain.

    Play 3:

Here again we see the same problems with the blocking scheme, only now the strong safety is blitzing off the edge with no one accounting for him.

    Play 4:

The interesting part about this play is either due to the Mike linebacker walking up into the A-gap or the physic offensive line knowing a blitz was coming they all blocked play side for the most part. The play side tight end blocked down instead of man on against the strong safety and ends up blocking the Sam linebacker. The play side tackle and guard initially look as though they are going to work a zone combo to the play side but the tackle ends up man on against the defensive end and the guard wasn't able to attach to a defender and pulls around to pick up the blitzing strong safety and springing the play for a big gain. The center, backside guard and tackle end up blocking man on against the nose, the walked up Mike linebacker and defensive end while the back side tight end which looked to work a zone combo with the back side tackle initially could never attach and ended up cutting the Will linebacker.

    Play 5:

Here again we return to the blockers initially blocking away from the play. The tight end and play side tackle work a double team and the play side guard attempts to chase the Sam linebacker who is looping around the tight end. The center gets beat to the play side due to playing with poor leverage and the back side guard releases to the plugging Will linebacker leaving he Mike linebacker to run through the play side A-gap and make a play. The back side tackle and tight end block man on against the defensive end and weak safety.

    Ace Slot

    Play 1:

Like with inside zone from ace normal the ball is going one way and the blockers are going opposite. Due to this as soon as the ball carrier receives the ball he is facing a situation where there are four defenders on two blockers.

    Play 2:

Again the same issue as with play one, the blocking scheme is completely wrong.

    Play 3:

Same problem again, this time the blitzing strong safety is unaccounted for and has a free run at the ball carrier.

    Play 4:

I'm not quite sure what the defense was doing here, the nose tackle dropped back into pass coverage but no defenders replaced him as they might in a zone blitz scheme. The blocking scheme was exactly the same as the previous plays, however since all the interior defenders were 5 yards off the line of scrimmage there was a cutback lane available.

    Play 5:

Again much of the same problems, the strong safety and Will linebacker were unaccounted for in the blocking scheme.

    I-Formation

    Play 1:

The blocking on the back side is just like the previous plays, however the center blocks man on against the nose, the back side guard releases to the Mike linebacker and the back side tackle blocks man on against the defensive end. This leaves the Will linebacker unaccounted for. One the front side the tight end blocked man on against the strong safety carrying out the correct assignment. However the inside slanting play side defensive end pulled both the tackle and guard inside leaving the Sam linebacker for the full back.

    Play 2:

This play again goes back to the same blocking scheme seen in Ace Normal and Ace Slot, however with the full back in the backfield there is now a blocker for the Sam linebacker. In this play the strong safety drops into coverage, however if he would have blitzed that would have left two defenders for the fullback to pick up.

    Play 3:

Same exact blocking scheme as in play two however as I alluded to with the strong side safety blitzing the fullback would have a two on one situation. This time the strong safety misses the block allowing for a big gain but he again was unaccounted for in the blocking scheme.

    Play 4:

Again you see the same blocking scheme, however the play side defensive end slants to the outside pulling the tight end, tackle and guard with him. Now the Sam linebacker also rushed outside so the tight end and tackle were able to pick up the end and Sam. The guard turns around and picks up the Mike linebacker and the fullback ends up blocking no one. Back side the same scheme remains.

    Play 5:

I'm not quite sure what the line is doing here, the defense is bringing six (three down linemen and all three linebackers), the tight end and play side tackle double the defensive end, but neither blocker comes off on the plugging Sam linebacker who ends up making the tackle. The play side guard and center look to be working a combo on the nose. However, when the nose slants to the weak side the center completely misses him and ends up on the Mike linebacker. The play side guard then just stands in the middle of the play looking for someone to block. The back side guard and tackle pick up the Will linebacker and defensive end.

    Inside Read

    Play 1:

Initially the blocking looks pretty good, the play side tackle and guard work a zone combo up to the Sam linebacker. You'd like to see the center and back side guard work a scoop block on the nose tackle and I'd like to see the back side tackle release vertically inside of the defensive end to give the quarterback a good read.

    Play 2:

Here again the play side tackle and guard work a zone combo on the defensive end and Sam linebacker as they should. The center and back side guard do not work a scoop block and you can see why its important the scoop block be utilized here as the Mike linebacker is able to run right by the center and make a tackle. The back side tackle blocks the defensive end leaving no one accountable for the Will linebacker, in the end both the Mike and Will linebacker we in the backfield to make a tackle.

    Play 3:

The play side guard and tackle look initially like they are working a zone combo but the guard is unable to attach, the Sam linebacker is looping around the defensive end so if the tackle and guard would have worked a correct zone combo the tackle would have come off on the looping Sam and the guard would stay on the defensive end. The center blocks man on against the nose and the back side guard pulls around the center into the play side A-gap. The back side tackle again blocks man on against the defensive end. This left none of the linebackers accounted for, however because the Sam linebacker missed a tackle in the backfield there was still a big gain.

    Play 4:

The play side tackle and guard work a zone combo, however the guard comes off the block way to early. The center and back side guard also work a zone combo with the center coming off play side. Now because the back side guard does not release vertically inside of the defensive end there is no blocker accountable for the Will linebacker who ends up making the tackle.

    Play 5:

Here the play side tackle and guard work a zone combo and this time the guard stayed on the block to long as the Sam linebacker was plugging the B-gap. The center gets beat by the nose tackle to the play side A-gap. The back side guard released to the Mike linebacker and again because the back side tackle does not release inside of the defensive end on the Will linebacker the Will is unaccounted for and makes the tackle. So we have both the A- and B-gap occupied by the Sam linebacker and nose with the Will linebacker coming through the backside A-gap and none of them blocked.

    Inside Read Option

    Play 1:

Here we see the play side tackle and guard work a zone combo as they should. The center blocks man on against the nose and the back side guard pulls through to the play side A-gap. Now the Mike linebacker is plugging the back side A-gap hard. When working the scoop block in a zone scheme the two blockers just like on any zone combo block must keep an eye on the second level defender (in this case the Mike linebacker), if he plugs the back side the back side blocker will stay home and pick him up and the play side blocker will stay on the play side defender. Here neither was done and the Mike comes through the back side A-gap to make the tackle.

    Play 2:

This play is exactly like play one, only this time the back side guard stayed home and picked up the Mike linebacker.

    Play 3:

This play starts out like the previous two but the back side guard after initially looking like he was going to pull through the play side A-gap turned back for the plugging Will linebacker and missed. The play side defensive end rushed outside wide pulling both the play side tackle and guard leaving the Sam linebacker unaccounted for and both the Will and Sam linebackers were in the back field to make a tackle.

    Play 4:

This is exactly like play one, the back side guard pulls through the play side A-gap with the Mike plugging the back side A-gap, only this time the Will was blitzing as well. The Mike missed the tackle in the backfield where the Will cleaned up the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage.

    Play 5:

This is blocked exactly as play two was but there was no plugging Mike linebacker, this time it was the Will who wasn't picked up.
