I'd just like to know who thought baseball was too short at 154 games and lengthened it to 162. If they went back to 154 you could have longer post season series before it starts snowing up here. It's great the Jays have a dome but Minnesota would be brutal.

When you're at 154, 8 more seems irrelevant. 100 games should be the number. The NBA should go to 60.

58 would be perfect. Play every other team in the NBA twice, one home and one away.

I say you just seed them based off of record and the bottom two teams play the one game wildcard. Why should winning a crappy division seed a team higher than a team with more wins

That's a good argument for every sport. But if you do that you might as well get rid of divisions (I'm not that opposed to the idea) . Look at how the NFL has allowed some crappy teams in the playoffs and gave them home field.

I'm fine with divisions for the sake of rivalries, but definitely not when it comes to the playoffs. The NBA has thankfully discovered logic when it comes to playoff seeding. Now the NFL, NHL and MLB just need to follow suit.

Hank
10-06-2015, 07:28 AM
I like the NBA seeding arrangement as well.
The only problem with it is that if you're still using divisions, then the schedule is lopsided and you can't trust that the best team is the #1 seed.
I'm sure Golden State would have had way more wins if they played in the East last season.

If the real reason for divisions is to cut down on travel costs, then maybe all the leagues need to look at creating a revenue sharing travel fund so that every team pays the exact same amount for travel costs.
In hockey, I used to hate that Detroit played in the Western Conference and traveled 50,000 miles a season while New Jersey had only slept outside their own beds 6x in an entire season.

If baseball were to iron out the DH league, I'd love to see a 30-team league with no divisions, conferences, etc.
The seasons are getting too long as it is (in all sports) so for MLB, if every team played 5x, that would be 145 games. If you still wanted to get to 162, sprinkle in roaming 'rivalry' games so Boston and NY could still go at it.

It might not work for MLB because of the tradition, but for a sport like hockey, I'd be all for it.
After they expand to 32 teams, shorten the season to 62 games and have everyone play a home-and-home series.

JBHuskers

Just do it like the NFL.

6 teams make it from the NL and AL. Top two get a bye. Wild Card Round, Best of 3. Divisional Round, Best of 5. ALCS, NLCS, WS Best of 7.

Hank
10-06-2015, 10:34 AM
I'd like that system too.
The only problem is the season is already so dang long that they'd be playing till US Thanksgiving.

They need to drop back to 154 games so the WS is finished well before Halloween. The colder it gets, the less offense. The season should really be wrapping up by mid October at the latest.

psuexv
10-06-2015, 10:58 AM
You can still keep the divisions. The division winner gets an automatic bid into the playoffs so it still keeps the division rivalry and those teams fighting for the top spot because it's the only way to get in. They just might have to play in the one game Wild Card game. Maybe you don't call it a Wild Card game, but just the 1st round where it's one game winner take all.

I agree that other sports could have this argument too. I don't have too much of an issue with the NFL other than the fact that the division winner gets home field advantage. Go 6 teams, top two get a bye and the others are seeded based on record. Once again you still have the divisions mean something because it is the only way some of those teams get in.

Hank
10-06-2015, 11:54 AM
When you're at 154, 8 more seems irrelevant. 100 games should be the number. The NBA should go to 60.

154 (and even 162) were far more relevant when only the pennant winners advanced to the playoffs. Those last 20 games were basically playoff games.
But now, with all these playoff series’ and wildcard matchups, anything over 154 is excessive. Heck, they could probably go even less.

I don’t mind the one-and-done Wildcard format because it captures the NCAA March Madness feel of urgency.
The one issue I have though, is that the Wildcard game should be played the next day after the regular season winds up, and the Division Series should begin the next day after that.
With all these days off, it helps the Wildcard teams too much. They should suffer for having to play a lottery game.

(Saying that, I'd love a first-round best of 3 Wildcard matchup. The more baseball the better)

Concerning the NBA, I agree. I think the NHL should also go to 60 games.
Those seasons are way too long (especially hockey). From start to finish, the seasons shouldn’t be more than 8 months – including pre-season and playoffs.
There’s no reason why the Stanley Cup should be awarded in early-to-mid-June. It should be handed out before the May long weekend.
Plus, the game is so much more physical and harder to play, there’s way too many injuries and fatigue. By the time you get to the playoffs, it’s basically the healthiest teams that advance.
It’s not good TV either if half the stars are playing at 50%.

Less Games + More Time off = Better Entertainment Package.

I'm not into Baseball or watch it ever but that playoff system is a joke

I see the Pirates won 98 games (assume that's good), then get a 1-game series in the playoffs!!!

Yeah that makes playing 160+ games really worth it...to play a 1-game playoff series

Yes/no.

IMO baseball screwed up when they got rid of the division winners only format. The old system really made the 162 game season and winning the division important. Now its just get into the playoffs and hope your bats get HOT at the right time.

But in that scenario both Pittsburgh and the Cubs are sitting at home while the Mets and the Dodgers are playing. So the 2nd and 3rd best team in all baseball, not just the NL aren't in the playoffs?

steelerfan

I'd say it's less about hot bats than hot arms, in the playoffs.

I hate the 1-game playoff even though my team is a benefactor of it. There should be a minimum of 3 games to decide it and it would only add 1 day to the current schedule.

Well if memory serves St. Louis was in the West back in the day while Chicago/Pitts where in the East. Baseball needs to go back to a simple West/East format (or just eliminate the divisions entirely)

So... the NLCS would be STL v. PIT

The Giants won like 103 games ten years ago and missed the playoffs. System is definitely better now even if another two games would be good. You do have to be careful with the other teams having too much time off in addition to even more games played, possibly into November.

The takeout slide needs to go. The base runner needs to stay in contact with second base. If he doesn't he should be ejected. Utley is a douschebag. You can't have guys getting hurt on something so stupid. Slide hard but to the bag at least.

I agree.

That slide was ridiculous. When you do something like that - basically injure someone outside of the rules or spirit of the game - I've always felt that you should be suspended for as long as the injured player is out plus some (plus 10 games or whatever).

Unfortunately, as Goodell found out, the leagues are pretty powerless against the unions and the unions would have none of it.

The takeout slider has always been a goddamn joke and should have been banned ages ago. That picture alone says it all for evidence why it needs to be banned. Absolutely zero reason to be going at a player like that that far off the bag. Congrats, you broke up a double play. Guess what, you also just ended another player's season by breaking his leg or destroying his ACL all on a fucking slide 10 feet off the bloody bag.

Chase Utley's lucky that A, it's the playoffs and the Mets are more focused on winning the series, and B, that he's not being put in the lineup last night and probably tomorrow. If this was regular season, first at-bat, he'd have a fastball coming straight for his head.

That is definitely cool...

Last night Javier Brackamonte #85, a Houston Astros bullpen catcher showed an unbelievable act of class and sportsmanship. After the game was over, he dug in his giant bag of gear and basically emptied it throwing stuff to all the kids. He threw them his hat, batting gloves, his chest protector, his chin guards, tootsie pops and every baseball he could find which was about 25 balls.. When he was done he threw his bag over his shoulder, clapped for all of us and wished us good luck the rest of the way. It was so cool to see someone showing kids how it's supposed to be done. I was sitting there just shocked. After getting heckled all night he showed us what he is all about.. What a great guy. I'll definitely be rooting for him from now on.

Ha ha! For the record I am a Tigers fan #1 but have jumped on the Blue Jay bandwagon. Canada's team right now for sure.

Personal note. A good friend of mine was actually drafted by the Yankees 24 years ago in the 11th round. Jason Wuerch. Played with Jeter, Pettitte , Rivera boys and some others briefly in the minors. He never made it past A ball and was released after 5 years but it was cool to go to his first Tiger game back home when the Yankees were in town and see him chat with some old teammates near the field. He was a very clean cut kid and some of the guys on his team were pigs lol. He could never adjust to that lifestyle.

I went to school and played youth baseball with Mets pitcher Jon Niese. I actually was a pitcher as a kid as well as him, I just never had great control of the ball, especially on breaking pitches, so my pitching career never lasted past age 15. He stuck with baseball as we got into junior high and high school while I eventually went the route of football.

I also very briefly crossed paths with Chad Billingsley, but it was very briefly as he was 3 years older than me, so I never had much more than a year or two in the upper levels of youth and ACME baseball to be around him.

Yeah. Who knew that you and I had only 2 degrees of separation?

That is cool. Also, my buddy failed a grade too as a kid. Jay is a year older than me.

Wow. I get to watch the blue Jays blow it AND the Wolverines. Not a great day.

Tough start for the Cubs. Stick a fork in them.

The Cubs overachieved this year. They were supposed to be a year or two away from a big push, yet they made the NLCS. The rotation needs another big arm to go with Lester and Arrieta with maybe another big bat. Not just the Cubs, but the Mets are going to be here for a long time, and you'll probably see the two teams battle in the playoffs again very soon. GO CUBS GO!

Since the Jays were knocked out I have watched less than 1 inning of the World Series. Two teams I don't follow or care about = zero inerest.

Lies. Nothing but pure lies. You guys have been watching every single World Series game, every single close NFL game and every single close college football game at the same time on different channels because "drooling masses".

And Bryant wins ROTY for the NL unanimously!

Two future MVP's here I'm going to guess.
