Figured it deserved its own thread. The World Cup starts here in a few hours.

Looking at the schedule it looks like most games start at 11:00 2:00 and 5:00 CST so lots of streaming on the Kindle Fire HDX from the office.

New Year same story for England. Wayne Rooney is the most over hyped worthless soccer player possibly ever. I've never seen him perform anywhere near world class level. He was ABUSED in the 1st half with his "defense" and then in the 2nd it was one choke job after another just shanking shots and corners all over the place.

Yeah I hate to "pile on" but another weak performance by Rooney and the Mother country... No insult to Italy but England needs to step it up. Yes this is the best they have. The truth is England currently is basically on par with the U.S. on the soccer field and have no business being compared to the REAL threats to win the World Cup.

You can't put too much stock into what happened 4 and 8 years ago.

Fact is, Football has gotten stronger in the States in the last 4 years. There are 20 MLS players on WC 2014 rosters (10 on US). That is the most since MLS started. In 2010, there were only 6 MLS players on WC rosters, which is the all-time low.

1998 - 19
2002 - 11
2006 - 15
2010 - 6
2014 - 20

Not saying your pick is bad, just saying don't put so much weight on 4 and 8 years ago. :)

Oh, I know. A lot has definitely changed since 2006 and 2010, older players have gone, newer players have come. Both teams have at least changed somewhat since those two Cups. But, for whatever reason, Ghana always seems to have USA's number, either they come out hard or the US comes out sluggish. Hoping it's different tonight, but I'm sort of reserved until the US is able to actually get it done against Ghana.

Obviously I was never world class in shape but I can tell you running 6-10 miles a day in the summer didn't matter when the temp was in the 90s and humidity high early in our high school seasons. Even with unlimited subs we were GASSED by the end of the game.

IMHO if Ghana wanna sit back down 0-1. Take the damn air out of the ball and just watch the clock run b/c at some point they are going to turn it up and you need the energy to respond.

England in particular appeared to collapse under the heat/humidity against Italy as they were making a ton of mental errors and just shanking passes/shots/crosses at the end.

Apparently US fans in the stadium have started chanting "I believe that we will win". Yeah, just a tad bit premature there.

Still 75 minutes to go with only a one goal lead. That's a lot of time for our defense to screw up or the players just plain get worn out under the conditions. Probably best to wait until at least mid way through the second half before starting that chant.

That'd be like Oklahoma students chanting that after returning the opening kickoff against Texas and leading 7-0 midway through the first quarter. :fp:

No, there is nothing wrong there. But when it's only 1-0 still in the infancy of the match, completely horrible time to do that chant, especially when playing a team like Ghana. Up 2-0, OK, maybe. Playing Bosnia, OK, you can probably go ahead. Only 15 minutes into a match against Ghana? You're prepping to get reamed up the ass by fate, as we briefly saw before that header by Brooks.

We have to find someone to create and keep possession of the ball on offense. I thought it would be Bradley but he was a no show tonight.

After today, and even before, I think Germany has already always been pre-marked as a loss. We did what we had to do to beat Ghana, but I just don't see us having any chance against Germany, unless they play all back ups and sleepwalk through the match. The only question is do we lose by less than or more than 5 goals? Well, two questions, the second being will we even score a goal against the Germans?

I think if you watched a bit of football, you'd be surprised at how a lesser team can earn a result against a powerful opponent by simply taking space away at the expense of possession.

I watch it happen to Chelsea all the time and watched an extremely shorthanded Chelsea side do it to Liverpool at Anfield late this season.

We'll see what happens. Who thought Costa Rica would beat Uruguay? Or that the Dutch would destroy Spain?

We've still got to take on the two "powerhouses" of the group in Portugal and Germany. How we play against Portugal will determine our chances. If we lose, it's over because Germany will kill us.

The initial SPI, immediately after the draw, had USA at 39% and Portugal at 40%. I just went back to the World Football thread and checked.

I know there are some here (and everywhere) that think the US has very little shot at getting any result from the match with Portugal. I think you may be surprised. The US can play with Portugal.

Add to the fact that the US is currently +5 in differential, compared to the Portuguese, Ronaldo being less than 100% and Pepe (their best defender) being suspended. I'd say 53% is fair right now. That said, a point against Portugal is a MUST.

Gonna be fun to watch. :)

Portugal is either going to come out flat (i.e. they have given up and will just walk through the remaining games and go home) or they will come out with their hair on fire knowing they MUST get 3 points against the US. Assuming Portugal puts forth an honest effort, I don't think a W is likely but a draw is certainly possible.

The key to the Portugal game will likely be conditioning. I believe we are playing in the damn rain forest the next game (same site England Italy). England looked GASSED at the end and had nothing in the tank by the end of the game. We also looked a little gassed towards the end of the Ghana game and the heat/humidity is only going to be worse next match.

I suspect Germany torches Ghana (2 or 3-0) and then decide to rest a large chunk of their team in the final against the U.S.

Defense let us down. They have been shaky both games. We deserved a loss in the 1st game got a win deserved a win 2nd game got a draw. I give us little chance of advancing now.

Either that or Klinsman needs to get on the horn and arrange a 0-0 draw. We concede the group to the Germans but guarantee advancing to the knockout stage in 2nd place. Crazier things have happened in soccer.

If we lose the only shot we have is if Portugal defeats Ghana and then not by 4 goals (assuming we only lose by 1 to Germany) and advance on goal differential.

If the US loses by one and Ghana wins by one, the US would likely go through on their head-to-head win over Ghana (unless Ghana wins like 3-2 or 4-3 or something).

There are plenty of positive scenarios for America still.

FIFA resolves ties in the group stage in the following order: goal differential, goals scored, head-to-head results. (Eventually, it gets down to drawing lots.) Ghana could out score us and thus the head to head results never come into play.

So, for the US to advance, what are we looking at?

Win=in. That much I know.
Are we in with a draw? Should we lose, what's best case scenario?

So, for the US to advance, what are we looking at?

Win=in. That much I know.
Are we in with a draw? Should we lose, what's best case scenario?

Scenarios

1. Defeat Germany - win the group advance
2. Tie Germany - advance in 2nd place in the group
3. Lose to Germany

a. Ghana Portugal Tie - U.S. advance in 2nd place

b. Ghana Defeats Portugal - Ghana and the U.S. would be in a tie for 2nd place so the first tiebreaker is Goal Differential. U.S. is currently at +1 Ghana Currently at -1. However, if we lose by default our Goal Differential would at best be 0 and Ghana at worst is at 0 if they defeat the U.S. - thus the likely determining factor is did US/Ghana win/lose by more goals in the final than the other. Assuming its the same the next tie breaker is goals scored. We are currently up 1 on Ghana in goals scored but again it would all depend on the scores of the final 2 games.

c. Portugal Defeats Ghana - Portugal and the U.S. would be in a tie for 2nd place. 1st tiebreaker is Goal Differential. Now the US probably will have the advantage unless Portugal DESTROYS Ghana (or we get destroyed by Germany) Portugal is currently -4 (due to the beat down by the Germans) we would hopefully be at 0 (losing by 1 to Germany). However, if Portugal somehow manages to destroy Ghana and/or a combo of a bad loss and a good win by Portugal it could come down to goals scored and potentially even drawing lots b/c there would be no head to head tiebreaker.

In short, if we lose to Germany we should probably root for Portugal to just barely beat out Ghana like 1-0. The games start at the exact same time so the players will most likely not know what results they need. I would expect Ghana/Portugal to be a very aggressive attacking game as both teams MUST WIN to have any hope of advancing so you could see allot of goals scored. In contrast, Germany US could be a more cautious defensive game.

When I said we suck, I wasn't saying we're horrible. What I was saying that we got lucky beating Ghana when Ghana had the ball for what seemed like the entire game, firing shot after shot.

And while I don't watch professional league soccer, I watch international soccer whenever I see it's on.

Isn't Italy eliminated if they lose? In that case, wait until its clear they are done (final seconds) and then go straight for the nuts.

Honestly, I'd rather see him beat down. Knock every one of those fucking teeth out. In fact, I hope an Italian supporter takes a tire iron to his chops.

I'm sure he will be suspended for the remainder of the World Cup. That, however, isn't enough. I'd like to see him banned, permanently, from all FIFA competitions.

Nor did the 7-game ban in 2010 when he was at Ajax.

From what I've read, FIFA can give him a 2-year ban. Hopefully, that's not ALL they can do.

Hell, hopefully they at least do that much. FIFA sure hasn't shown any signs of balls lately when it comes to punishments handed out against clubs. Maybe they'll have some balls against Suarez.

FIFA rarely gets involved at the club level (though they have let Barcelona off the hook on the transfer ban). Most sanctions against clubs are handled domestically (ie The FA) or by the respective confederations (ie UEFA).

For example, Suarez' 10-match ban was handed out by the English FA (the EPL is part of their jurisdiction) and the Financial Fair Play sanctions against Manchester City came from UEFA (FFP is a Europe/UEFA-specific regulation).

Ahh, alright. I thought everything went through FIFA. Still trying to get a grasp on everything with the multiple levels (FA, UEFA, FIFA, etc).

The easiest way to explain it is like this:

If it affects global competitions (ie World Cup, Club World Cup, Confederations Cup etc) it will be handled by FIFA.

If it's on the continental level (ie Champions League, Europa League, Euro etc) it will be handled by the Confederation (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, AFC, OFC, CAF).

If it is domestic (MLS, EPL, FA Cup), it is handled by that nation's governing body (ie The FA).

There are some things that fall outside of the norm such as the examples from the last post. FIFA governs transfer policy globally, which is why they are/were handling the Barcelona deal and it wasn't handled in Spain or by UEFA. It's rules that virtually every club must follow worldwide.

In the case of FFP, that is a rule that UEFA put in to govern/control spending among the clubs in their jurisdiction (Europe).

Therefore, if a player is suspended by the English FA, he can't play in their competitions (EPL, FA Cup, Capital One Cup) during the suspension. He is eligible, however, to play in the UCL or Europa League. The FA doesn't have the authority to prevent that, UEFA does. He could also play in, for example, the World Cup because only FIFA has the right to suspend him there.

Hope that was comprehensible, it's probably the simplest explanation I can give. :)
