PS4 Madden 25

The Career of Osiris Jones

Owner of the St Louis Rams.

With the recent birthday gift of a PS4 I've started up a Madden 25 franchise. In truth I've already played through a few seasons of a Madden 25 PS3 franchise with the Oakland Raiders running a Spread offense Patriots style attack. Now that I'm migrating all my games to the new generation the switch to the PS4 necessitates a new franchise. I've decided to blog about my franchise for a few reasons. I like the idea that years later I can look back at a franchise and read about how it progressed. I also like how writing about things as they happen keeps me engaged in the franchise.

This time around I thought I'd do things different than I did before. For one, I randomly selected the team I will play (St Louis Rams). For another I'm opened up relocation to any team and will be relocating as soon as the option presents. Most impacting of all, though, for the first time in my Madden career I activated the "Fantasy Draft" to shake up the league! It will be interesting to see who winds up where. With the power level in the league flattened anyone can be a contender. Who will come out on top?

To keep things easily accessible, I have shamelessly stolen the stats and tracking format of SmoothPancakes. Many thanks to him. I will things up similarly to how SmoothPancakes does with recaps posts for each game, yearly stats, coaching history stats, and the like all nicely arranged. I’ll also include a google drive link to a spreadsheet breakdown of my current roster for any curious.

The NF Fantasy Re-Draft
I’ve quickly learned that round by round analysis of a 54 round draft would take forever! To speed things up I’ll do a position by position exploration of my draft decisions.

Draft Strategy
The key to a successful draft depends on the strategy you devise and how you execute on that strategy and given the unique situation presented in drafting an entire team a solid strategy is even more critical. Nothing could be worse than realizing half way through the draft that you made all the wrong decisions with your top 10 picks and your future looks as bleak as Oakland’s free agency blunders. With this in mind new Owner Osiris Jones crafted a drafting strategy to rule them all.
Not knowing his order in the draft made creating a strategy difficult so Jones decided on a plan of broad strokes refined as the detail came into focus. On offense Jones wanted a mixture of a Chip Kelly read option spread rushing attack and vertical passing attack. Play action would be key as the threat of the run froze line backers in place opening up the seams between the middle and deep parts of the field. A QB needed to have Speed, Acceleration, Strength of Arm, and pin point Deep Precision to pull it all off. Few QBs in the league possess such traits so securing one quickly had to be a priority.

In addition to an athletic QB Jones wanted a dominating WR with that rare combination of Height and Speed to not only beat slower corners on deep routes but contest balls in the air thrown over shorter DBs. Other aspects of the offense could wait with the large number of TEs and Offensive Linemen Jones could afford to put off focus on there until the high teens or even mid twenties. HB was another area Jones felt could wait until even the second half of the draft where speed backs would surely still be available. Those backs may lack the strength to dominate in a rushing attack pounding through the line of scrimmage but should see success stretching the field running out of shotgun.

Flipping side Jones knew he needed to address the defense and address it early if he hoped to bring home the Lombardi trophy. Weak secondary play was always a scorn of Jones’ existence and would be the primary focus for this draft. He wanted strong CBs able to dominate in zone coverage, Safeties able to hold their own on deep coverage, and LBs that could enforce the middle of the field. He hoped to combine that with a stout run stopping defensive line and a pass rushing LB or two he could sub in on obvious passing downs to bring pressure.

With that in mind Jones knew the success to any draft was your ability to be agile making quick decisions but always working towards a master plan. Still what would Jones do when under the gun of time or delegated to a late round draft pick with all his primary targets off the board. Would he reach and draft a player ahead of his talent or shift gears filling out other parts based on the players available? What would happen if he was presented with a strategy altering decision like the absence of solid Zone Coverage defenders or deep threat athletics QB? After the draft is all said and done will this new St Louis Rams team deliver the type of team Jones planned to build?

DEFENSE
Secondary
The secondary was the focal point of the draft and the place our draft analysis will start. When the draft order flashed on the screen St Louis Rams owner Osiris Jones felt pretty good about his overall position. A top 5 pick would have been preferred but picking 12th should deliver Jones his much wanted Athletic QB without hampering his pick order on snake rounds. Jones had four QB targets in sight and surely one of them would be available by the 12th pick in the draft. His primary pick would have been Aaron Rodgers but Jones knew that such talent was unlikely to remain that far into the draft. A close second on his list was Andrew Luck. After them Jones would settle for a first round pick of either Cam Newton or Russell Wilson. The 12th pick came and the improbable happened. Cam Newton got picked up by the Packers, then Russell Wilson went to the Titans just two picks later, followed by Andrew Luck to the Ravens and Aaron Rodgers to the Eagles. All were gone as top 10 picks. Refusing to get flustered and facing a counting clock Jones quickly assessed the board. He could reach for Kaepernick, the only real Athletic QB that would even come close to merit a pick this high. Hatred of the 49ers and Kaepernick’s bitching after losing the NFC title game clouted Jones head though and he pushed Kaepernick out of his mind. Maybe in the second round but a first round selection was more than Kaepernick deserved (plus Athletic QBs like Michael Vick, Geno Smith, and EJ Manuel might prove smarter value for pick selections.) Without a dominate QB taking a WR first round would likely be a waste of talent. Time ticked down and Jones struck. Pass defense may no longer be a concern with the selection of CB Richard Sherman.

Jones followed up in the 2nd round with another cornerback after seeing Darrelle Revis still available and secured the best secondary in football. In the third round Jones added Devin McCourty, a free safety with a 1st round draft grade. McCourty would be the perfect complement to Jones’ dominate secondary.

In the 10th round Jones drafted starting strong safety Kenny Vaccaro. A Texas prospect new to the NFL, Vaccaro makes up for his lack of experience with solid coverage skills and bone crunching power.

The rest of the secondary slowly tricked into place over the remainder of the draft. Safeties Jonathan Cyprien and Matt Elam were selected in the 18th and 19th rounds and cornerbacks Byron Maxwell, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Jamell Fleming were drafted in the 12th, 34th, and 48th rounds.

Richard Sherman is possibly the most dominate CB in the game. His mastery of both man and zone coverage (98 MCV and 96 ZCV) combined with physical presence (97 PRS) and uncanny awareness (95 PRC) can lock down any receiving threat Jones might face.

Darrelle Revis is a stud at CB bringing both elite man and zone coverage skills (97 MCV and 92 ZCV). His awareness of the field rivals that of Sherman (95 PRC) and his physical presence is only slightly behind that of Sherman (90 PRS).

Devin McCourty is the best coverage safety in the draft with insane man and zone coverage skills for a safety (91 MCV and 97 ZCV). While lacking the elite awareness of Sherman or Revis, McCourty can stand his own ground against most routes (82 PRC and 93 AGI) while providing the speed needed to cover the entire field (93 SPD and 95 ACC).

Byron Maxwell continues with the theme of strong zone coverage defenders able to quickly cover the field. He combines elite zone coverage (91 ZCV) with superior man coverage (86 MCV) to succeed in any defensive coverage. That combines with his physical presence (89 PRS and 75 POW) to round out the Rams in nickel sets.

Dre Kirkpatrick might lack the man coverage skills of the top three Rams corners (75 MCV) but his strong zone coverage (88 ZCV) combined with physical presence (89 PRS and 73 POW) make Kirkpatrick an excellent developmental talent at just 23 years of age.

Jamell Fleming provides depth at the cornerback position that Jones hopes isn’t needed. His low zone coverage skills (83 ZCV) are barely adequate to see play and he lacks the physicality of the other corners on the team.

Matt Elam is a 21 year old rookie out of Florida who combines a decent focus on coverage (73 MCV and 82 ZCV) with a run stuffing physicality (90 POW, 72 TAK, 74 BSH) that Jones hopes will translate into big plays in run support.

Johnathan Cyprien rounds out the Rams secondary. A rookie out of FIU, Cyprien’s coverage skills are above average for a strong safety (78 MCV and 77 ZCV) and his physical presence (79 BSH, 75 TAK, and 90 POW) should stand up in run support.

Linebackers
After his initial focus on a pass dominate secondary Jones focused on supporting that secondary with a coverage heavy linebacker corp led by outside linebacker turned middle linebacker Lavonte David in the 5th round. Jones then picked outside linebacker KJ Wright in the 8th round and Alec Ogletree in the 11th round. After that Jones built depth with pass coverage linebackers Kiko Alonso in the 13th, Jelani Jenkins in the 24th, and Malcolm Smith in the 30th. Jones drafted pass rushing threat Sergio Kindle in the 25th and run stopping linebacker Manti Te’o in the 29th.

Lavonte David combines coverage skills (75 MCV and 88 ZCV) with amazing reach (88 SPD, 88 AGI, 90 ACC, and 98 PUR) providing Jones with the dominate middle linebacker needed to run the multiple coverages Jones wants.

KJ Wright continues in the trend of coverage linebackers with coverage skills just short of Lavonte David (74 MCV and 84 ZCV). His athleticism gives him the skills to roam the middle of the field (82 SPD, 87 ACC, 84 AGI, and 91 PUR) while his physical play lets him bring down the pain (85 POW and 93 TAK).

Alec Ogletree has coverage skills to mirror those of KJ Wright while improving on his reach (83 SPD, 90 ACC, 87 AGI,and 92 PUR) and remaining physical (85 TAK and 89 POW).

Kiko Alonso may lack the reach of the other backers (81 SPD, 88 ACC, 83 AGI, and 93 PUR) but his coverage skills (72 MCV and 85 ZCV) along with stellar hands (77 CTH)make his a solid replacement during the course of the game.

Malcolm Smith and Jelani Jenkins round out the coverage linebackers (73 MCV / 84 ZCV and 75 MCV / 84 ZCV). Each brings adequate reach of the field though both lack in the stronger run stopping power of the other linebackers.

Manti Te’o, an ever so controversial draft pick, may be slower in his reach of the field then his compatriots (77 SPD, 82 ACC, 79 AGI, and 87 PUR) but he provides some depth against the run (74 BSH, 83 TAK, and 85 POW).

Sergio Kindle rounds out the linebacker corp for Jones. He brings a different look from the previous linebackers as a pass rushing threat out of 3rd and long blitz formations. His combination of athleticism (82 SPD, 93 ACC, and 80 AGI) combine with a killer pass rushing move (92 FMV) to harrier passers.

Defensive Line
If there was one area that lacked focus during the draft it was at the defensive line. Osiris Jones had a number of targets for the line but other priorities kept coming in the way and his desired picked slipped through his fingers (often times without Jones even realizing a wanted lineman was off the board until rounds later.) Without picking a defensive lineman until the 17th round there was little hope that Jones could create a dominate line like he had in his secondary and linebacker corps. Instead Jones worked with what was available knowing that some part of the team had to suffer the focus he placed on others.

Derrick Morgan was the first defensive end pick of the Rams in the 17th round. A strong side defensive end, Morgan’s size (6’3 and 278 pounds) combines with a powerful pass rushing move (93 PMV) and strong run stopping support (81 BSH and 84 PUR) to anchor the strong side of the line.

Billy Winn, selected in the 27th round, brings another strong run stopping defensive lineman that can play at the end or in the middle of the line. He provides solid depth at run support (85 TAK, 85 BSH, and 78 PUR) while still able to rush a passer (84 FMV and 85 ACC).

Vinny Curry. selected in the 36th round, is a skilled pass rusher off the weak side (90 FMV and 85 ACC) who packs a hard hit (81 POW) when he gets to the opposing quarterback. Jones expects Curry to start on the weak seeing play in all passing downs and most rushing downs.

Tyrone Crawford, selected in the 38th round, is another run stopping hybrid defensive end/tackle with strong run support (83 BSH, 83 TAK, and 88 PUR) who can still rush the passer (86 PMV). He isn’t expected to start but will see play in the defensive line rotation.

Steven Means, selected in the 42nd round, brings depth to the line. He lacks a dominate pass rushing move (82 PMV) but brings a good mix of athleticism (81 SPD, 74 AGI, and 84 ACC) with a dominate physical hit (85 POW).

Sharrif Floyd, selected in the 15th round, was the first defensive tackle taken by the Rams. His athleticism (73 SPD, 87 ACC, and 87 PUR) stand out for an interior lineman and combined with his run stopping skills (82 TAK, 89 BSH, and 75 POW) and pass rushing skills (85 PMV) make him the dominate threat on the line.

Stephen Paea, selected in the 20th round, is a run stopping threat (88 BSH, 85 TAK, and 87 POW) with some pass rushing skills (84 PMV) that will see play in 4 lineman situations.

Jordan Hill, selected in the 47th round, provides interior lineman depth for the Rams and may see play in pass rushing situations (81 FMV and 80 ACC).

Sylvester Williams, selected in the 49th round, is an athletic defense tackle (86 ACC) but lacks the pass rushing threats of the other interior lineman. He might be used on run stopping downs where depth is required (82 BSH and 82 TAK).

OFFENSE

Backfield
Osiris Jones wanted a fast backfield that could threaten the ball downfield utilizing a spread option passing attack and vertical threatening play action passing game to put quick points on the board. He got a fast backfield with both quarterbacks and halfbacks that can use speed to exploit mismatches on defense. He did not get a deep threat passing attack able to exploit size and speed against one on one coverage. Instead he got inaccurate passers that will likely have problem hitting receivers on their routes. His deep passing game will likely turn into a short west coast style passing attack supporting the run game as a change of pace on 2nd and 3rd downs or desperation on 3rd or 4th and long.

QB Terrelle Pryor was selected with the 23rd pick of the draft. Jones was the last team to pick a quarter in the draft but he doesn't feel that bad about his prospects with Pryor calling the shots. Sure Aaron Rodgers or Andrew Luck would have been preferred but both were gone before the Rams had a chance to pick and Jones hopes to turn the last selected starting QB in the draft into a true dual threat able to run or pass (even if the passing will be a development in the works.) Pryor brings breakneck speed for a quarterback (91 SPD, 91 AGI, and 90 ACC) combined with halfback caliber rushing moves (82 ELU, 92 BCV, 88 JKM, 85 SPM, and 85 SFA) to threaten big gains in the rushing game. Passing he is raw but has all the tools needed to mature into a true dual threat (6’6, 92 THP, 74 SAC, 73 MAC, and 75 DAC).

QB Josh Johnson, selected in the 43rd round, complements the Jones style offense with a combination of speed (88 SPD, 93 AGI, 92 ACC) and raw passing (89 THP, 72 SAC, 74 MAC, and 68 DAC) much the same as Pryor. What Pryor brings in halfback style rushing Johnson lacks making him an adequate backup but not starter material.

HB LaMichael Janmes, selected in the 37th round, epitomizes the Jones backfield philosophy. Halfbacks are a dime a dozen, rarely last more than 3-5 years, and are easily replaced. Despite their importance to his offense he couldn’t bring himself to drafting one early and as a result multiple teams were two deep at halfback before Jones picked his first. Still, the talent of LaMichael James cannot be understated. Just like he did in college, James has all the tools to shine in the NFL if he can focus on the fundamentals. There is no denying his athleticism (92 SPD, 95 AGI, 95 ACC, 92 ELU, 89 SPM, and 94 JKM) but he will need to improve on his ball handling skills if he wants a long future with the Rams (72 CAR and 78 BCV).

HB Kenjon Barner, selected in the 46th round, backed LaMichael James in college and has the chance to do so once more in the NFL. Like James he has the athletic skills needed (93 SPD, 92 AGI, 95 ACC, 92 ELU, and 92 JKM) but need to improve on his ball handling (73 CAR).

HBs Denard Robinson, Chris Rainey, and Jeff Demps, were selected in the 50th, 51st, and 52nd rounds, bring the same focus on raw speed with less refined rushing skills that LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner provide. Each has the breakaway speed that makes the spread option so deadly and each has experience in a spread option attack but all need work to improve on core skills to be NFL ready.

FB Marcel Reece, selected in the 16th round, was the first fullback off the board and a player of specific interest to Jones at the start of the draft. Despite picking him well ahead of his projected round Jones knew he would be a critical piece of his offense and the threat of another team beating him to the punch was a risk he couldn’t take. Reece has a rare combination of speed (90 SPD, 87 AGI, and 89 ACC), receiving threat (83 CTH and 80 80 RTE), rushing skills (86 CAR, 78 STR, and 83 TRK) and blocking prowess (82 IBL and 74 RBK) rolled into a 6’3 frame that lets him line up at fullback, halfback, or tight end.

Receiving Corp
Osiris Jones hoped for a tall fast WR able to stretch the defense, a tall possession receiver to work the deep middle and out routes, and a speedy slot receiver to comprise his primary receivers. Without the elite pass catcher to bring it all together he shifted focus and brought in a tall threat over the middle of the field in TE Rob Gronkowski, a not as tall and not as skilled speed receiver for deep threats, and a mix of possession receivers and speedsters to fill out the ranks. Not the ideal setup of receivers but given the quality of his quarterback passing hopefully won’t be a cornerstone Jones needs to rely on much to win.

TE Rob Gronkowski was selected in the 4th round of the draft. Despite spending a 4th round pick on the star TE Jones felt the pressure to act quickly or miss out entirely on any elite tight ends as already four other tight ends were picked Jones picked Gronk in the 4th round. Even using such a high pick Jones doesn’t feel it was a wasted pick or even a stretch. Gronk is one of the best fully featured tight ends in the game combining new age pass catching skills (91 CTH, 83 RTE, 97 CIT, and 87 SPC) with traditional run blocking (81 RBK) and an athleticism that denies his 6’6 265 pound frame (83 SPD, 86 AGI, and 87 ACC).

TE Jordan Reed, selected in the 35th round, is more of a developmental talent than a tight end Jones expects will see much more than spot work through the season. Reed possesses a similar athleticism to Gronk (81 SPD, 87 AGI, and 88 ACC) but falls far behind Gronk as a pass catcher (86 CTH, 76 RTE, 84 CIT, and 72 SPC) and run blocker (57 IBL and 62 RBK). Jones isn’t worried though since Reece will see more the snaps at TE in ace sets allowing Reed time to develop his skills.

WR Cordarrelle Patterson, selected in the 7th round, is Jones attempt at a fast tall receiver to stretch to field. Standing at 6’1 and possessing deep route speed (93 SPD, 96 AGI, and 95 ACC) Patterson has real concerns in his route running ability (68 RTE) he needs to address to grow into an elite receiver. Still he has most of the tools needed to see success as a #1 WR (83 CTH, 82 CIT, and 91 SPC) while threatening huge YAC gains after each reception (95 ELU, 98 JKM, and 93 SPM).

WR Danario Alexander, selected in the 22nd round, will line up opposite Patterson as a possession receiver using his height (6’5) and receiving skills (85 CTH, 90 CIT, and 93 SPC) to create mismatches on smaller cornerbacks.

WR Danny Amendola, selected in the 26th round, expects to line up in the slot on most plays and threaten the field with is short burst speed (95 ACC and 95 AGI) and ability to catch in traffic (94 CTH, 91 CIT, and 95 RTE).

WR Aaron Dobson, selected in the 32nd round, complements both Patterson and Alexander as a tall receiver that can step in for injury or fatigue and still deliver a tall threat able to make spectacular catches (84 CTH and 91 SPC) even if his receiving and route running skills aren’t at par with the rest (74 CIT and 71 RTE).

WR Greg Childs, selected in the 53rd round, Jones expects to use in a specialized situation as an extra deep blocker on kick returns. His athleticism (93 SPD, 95 AGI, and 91 ACC) should allow him to get up field quickly and find defenders while his blocking skills will keep them off the returner’s back (65 IBL and 59 RBK).

WRs Jacoby Ford and Brandon Banks, selected in the 28th and 45th rounds, complete the receiving core with a pair of speed receivers that offer great skills in the return game but are raw when it comes to receiving and route running skills. They might see play in 4 WR sets or in case of heavy injury but shouldn’t expect much action outside of the return game.

Offensive Line
Osiris Jones had one goal when deciding who would play on the Rams’ offensive line. He needed zone blocking lineman with enough short burst speed to kick outside on counters, base, or screen plays. He wouldn’t allow himself to stretch trying to fit a slower but better blocking lineman into his scheme knowing it would limit the plays he wanted to call and thus made some interesting decisions given draft position picking the offensive line. The end result, though, is a line that all possesses burst speed to go along with above average blocking skills (all above 80 ACC).

Jones started picking offensive tackles early in the draft and worked his way to the center and guard positions as the draft went on. Not feeling pressured to pick lineman early hurt Jones at the center position and cost him some talent at guard but he made up for both with quality young players possessing the athleticism he so desired while knowing he could train up blocking skills

(Rather than go into the specifics of each player (which would be boring, take a lot of time, and yield a similar write-up I’ll be posting the players, draft order, and key stats for each player below.)

LT Russell Okung – 6th round. 95 PBK. 90 RBK. 89 IBL. 88 STR. 87 ACC.
LT Menelik Watson – 33rd round. 84 PBK. 79 RBK. 84 IBL. 84 STR. 82 ACC.
RT Lane Johnson – 9th round. 85 PBK. 85 RBK. 93 IBL. 86 STR. 79 SPD. 85 ACC.
RT Derek Sherrod – 41st round. 84 PBK. 85 RBK. 85 IBL. 84 STR. 85 ACC
LG Jonathan Cooper – 21st round. 88 PBK. 86 RBK. 80 IBL. 90 STR. 72 SPD. 86 ACC.
LG Selvish Capers – 44th round. 82 PBK. 80 RBK. 87 IBL. 81 STR. 84 ACC.
RG Earl Watford – 31st round. 77 PBK. 81 RBK. 88 IBL. 85 STR. 80 ACC.
C Jason Kelce – 14th round. 85 PBK. 91 RBK. 97 IBL. 77 STR. 70 SPD. 83 ACC.
C Sam Brenner – 40th round. 76 PBK. 81 RBK. 83 IBL. 87 STR. 81 ACC.

Special Teams
Special teams were not a top priority. Jones felt like if he could get a solid kick power kicker and punter he would be more than fine (and if he could get both with late round picks that would be even better.

K Caleb Sturgis - 39th round. 95 KPW. 90 KAC.
Marquette King - 54th round. 93 KPW. 83 KAC.

Preseason Week 1
Free agent signing
Osiris Jones signed the following undrafted free agents to contracts following the NFL draft. All were signed to one year deals though specifics were not released.
QB Dennis Dixon adds depth at the quarterback position providing some insurance in case of injury.
FB Lawrence Vickers gives Jones flexibility at the FB position to line Reece up as a second TE and Vickers in the backfield when close to the goalline.
TE David Johnson comes in as a blocking TE that could see the play in obvious running situations
TE Chris Graggs is another quick young TE much like Reed who Jones hopes to develop.
LT Nick Mondek is another young offensive lineman with high burst speed but blocking skills in need of tuning.
LE Pannel Egboh provides more depth on the line able to play both inside and outside. He could work into the defensive line rotation primarily against run heavy formations.
RE Mike Daniels follows in the footsteps of Egboh adding depth to the line rotation.
MLB Sam Barrington is a hard hitting linebacker able to drop back into zone while still play strong against the run.
ROLB Cam Johnson is a quick linebacker with a deadly pass rush and strong off blocks.
CB Curtis Marsh is a physical cornerback able to drop back in zone but has a tendency to get lost in man coverage that could see play in dime or quarters formations.
FS Jimmy Wilson is a strong man coverage safety able to line up against slower TEs but has a tendency to get lost in zone coverage.
SS Markelle Martin is a pass rushing corner able to come in quick off the edge but lacks the skills to drop back into effect coverage.

With these signings Osiris Jones is ready for the start of pre-season.

Media Question
Holding his first press conference to start the 2013 preseason Osiris Jones entertained questions from the media. The question came from sports reporter Larry Ridley asking...

"You've been a highly successful businessman, and now you own an NFL franchise. What's the next step for you and this team?"

Jones paused momentarily before answering...

"Part of being good at business is surrounding yourself with smart people, so that will continue to be priority A. We'll build a continual winner from the top down."

After hearing the owner's response the the players responded favorably, though that may only continue for as long as Jones producing winning seasons.

Team News
Unsubstantiated rumors persist that Osiris Jones is looking at options to relocation the St Louis Rams, though no one knows where too. Relocation is nothing new to the Rams, a team that started as the Cleveland Rams before moving to Los Angeles in 1946 and then to St Louis in 1995. The Rams have seen success with each move having won a championship in each city it has called home (one Superbowl and two pre-merger titles.) Should the team move there is little doubt Jones hopes success will follow. Speculation is that this move may have been the result of a failed Stadium renovation levy for the 18 year old Rams Dome that is one of the worse places to play in the league.

Asking their opinion of the stadium ForeverRams complains that the team store is very cramped, the seating is old, and the fan zone holds a disco ball.

Stay tune for updates as the season progresses.
