So far, Sochi is turning out to be a mess, and the damn games haven't even started yet!

Hell, just reading all of the stuff on Twitter under #SochiProblems, my god, what the hell did that $51 billion get spent on? So many things not working or completely not ready. Multiple entire hotels not ready. One media guy, he checked into his hotel, his room wasn't anywhere near ready to be moved into it. Second room, the construction crew working in the hotel had taken over the room for their own use. The third room, had a damn stray dog in it! For spending $51 billion on getting ready for these games, apparently $50 billion went towards bribes for this much to be wrong just days before the game start.

And even the security, I'm not convinced. I'm sad to say, but I fully expect that there will be at the minimum an attempted terrorist attack sometime during the games, more expecting an actual successful one. Hell, you need look at the Boston Marathon for how easy it's getting. It's no longer car bombs and other massive obvious things. Nope, these days, just load some explosives into a bag and walk into a large crowd. No matter how much security the Russians have at the games, all it'll take is one guy to load a couple pounds of TNT or some other explosive into a bag and go strolling along with the rest of the crowd and it's mass injuries and mass chaos.

I heard this second hand so it may not be correct, but supposedly the Olympic security does not carry guns, only batons. It would not shock me to see a repeat of the 1972 Olympics.

I was going to add stories of issues in the first post, but thought that would keep me busy all day. Every time I look at an online news site, there are more stories/pictures of issues.

Well, I will say that I already planned on watching curling. Curling is my favorite winter Olympic sport, after discovering the greatness of curling with my friend back in our college dorm room during the 2006 games in Torino. So every second that curling is on TV, I will either be watching it live, recording it on my DVR and watching it after work, or watching it live online at work. Especially so because the fuckers that control TV refuse to ever air curling any other goddamn time of the century except for during the winter Olympics.

However, if the Russians are going to take pictures like that, then those fuckers better be curling dressed like that! :)

Jesus, the US men's and women's curling teams suck. So far a combined 0-5 to start the Olympics, and the US women were kind enough to help Great Britain create Olympic history today, with the first 7 point end in a single game of curling in all of Olympic history. Both teams start an end with 8 rocks. Great Britain scored 7 of those 8 rocks in End 4. How the hell did the US women bone that up so bad to allow Great Britain to score 7 of their 8 rocks in the fourth end? Because of that, what had been a 2-1 game at the time, turned into an eventual 12-3 ass whooping of historic proportions.

SmoothPancakes
02-12-2014, 08:36 AM
The women's hockey team sucks too, losing 3-1 to Canada right now (and it should be worse than that if it wasn't for a bunch of lucky ass saves). Maybe the US should just stop going to the winter Olympics in the future. We suck in curling, we suck in hockey, we suck in luge, we suck in snowboarding, we suck in skiing, this year we suck in figure skating. Lets face it, we suck.

The women will probably win silver in hockey. Typically, they struggle with Canada but beat everyone else by 5 to 15 goals.

Besides, Men's Hockey is all that matters. The rest of the Winter Games is, well, Michael Sam.

I haven't turned it on at all.

My over-the-air TV is terrible; I'm not sure that I can even pick up NBC. And now that they're putting the streaming content behind a service provider wall, I'm locked out.

Which is ok, I guess. I like watching some of the events. However, coverage of the games has changed so much over the last 20 years, with NBC relentlessly targeting women. It seems like it's wall to wall figure skating in the winter games and wall to wall gymnastics during the summer games. And then the endless 'human interest' stuff... Look, I'm sorry, but I don't care that Sven's dad died when he was 4. I just want to watch the Super G. I don't need the back story to enjoy a sporting event.

Well, true, they did beat Switzerland, or Sweden, or whoever it was 9-0 the other day. Don't know what their problem with Canada is, but they were not good today. Final score may have ended up 3-2 (that second goal coming with a pulled goalie), but the way Canada was shooting, without some lucky as hell stops by the US goalie, it easily could have been 5-2.

As for the rest of the Olympics, I just haven't been that impressed with the US athletes. Even in the events we're expected to take gold in (a couple of the skiing events, ski jumping and snowboarding, we've done poorly. Shaun White couldn't even medal at all yesterday in half-pipe, which he was apparently the favorite for gold.

Playoff qualifiers are done.

I wasn't surprised that Slovenia beat Austria, just that Austria failed to even show up. I did think Austria was the slightly better team.

Russia winning? No surprise. The surprise is how close Norway kept it. Yeah the final was 4-0 but it was 2-0 with about a minute to go and one of those first two goals was tough luck for the Norwegians. Russia better play ALOT better tomorrow against Finland. Finland is capable of winning Gold and I won't be surprised if they make the Gold Medal Game.

The two late games were good, close games. Slovakia fought back to give the Czech Republic a good run but CR won it. Not surprised by that result.

The stunner was Latvia over Switzerland. Jonas Hiller had been brilliant for the Swiss but their lack of offense eventually took them out. I really thought the Swiss would get by and give Canada fits like the did in 2006 and 2010.

Time to turn my attention to the UEFA Champions League for the rest of the day. :)

The early quarterfinal game was a 5-0 win for Sweden over Slovenia. Slovenia had just 1 NHL player (Anze Kopitar) while Sweden has just 1 player that isn't an NHLer. It was actually interesting for about 45 minutes and was just 1-0 going to the third period. The Swedes just wore down Slovenia in the third.

Except, yes, we did suck! The reason our medal count was as high as it was? The new events they added this year, the X-Games bullshit. Take away the medals that the US won in those events (since they were basically tailored for US medal wins) and we end up, at best, tied with Germany for 6th with 19 medals, probably a little worse.

Hockey, the men end up completely shut out of a medal.

Speedskating, supposedly our men and women were supposed to be medal favorites in multiple events, they didn't win a single fucking thing. Then they have the fucking audacity to blame the suits for them sucking so bad in speedskating. Guess what? They changed back to their OLD suits midway through the speedskating events and STILL didn't win a single goddamn medal. Hey dipshits, clearly it was NOT the suits that made you suck in those events!

Short Track speedskating, didn't win jackshit in that either until we somehow lucked into a silver in the very last final event with the team relays, thanks in part to China and Netherlands tripping and going into the pads on the very first turn of the event, leaving it just a duel between US and Russia for gold.

Alpine Skiing, Ted Ligety and Bode Miller were apparently supposed to do so good in multiple skiing events this time around. Miller sucked it up most of his events and only won a single bronze. Ligety, it took until the second to last event he competed in for him to finally win a medal. Nordic Combined, one of our guys won gold in Vancouver, ended up like 30th this year.

So sure, looking at the medal count, we did so great. Take away all the X-Games bullshit and we aren't anywhere near the top in medals. If our Olympians, who even themselves were touting their medal expectations (primarily the extremely disappointing speedskating athletes), did as great as they were widely expected to, we should have easily ended up with 35+ medals. Instead, well, outside of the X-Games shit, we didn't do a damn thing these Olympics.

So yes, we did suck. Sure, we're not that great in Winter Olympics. So what, if we're going to send a team to the Olympics, they goddamn well better be pushing 100% for gold every event. If they're not, then leave their asses home next time. Just like the people I saw on Facebook talking about the men's hockey team, saying that just being there was gold to them. Bullshit. That's loser talk. If you're happy just being there, then you don't deserve to be there at all. Second place may get a silver medal, but ultimately, second place is still just first loser. Enough of this "everyone gets a participation ribbon"/"be happy to just be there" bullshit. Either compete all out for that gold or sit your ass down. And all those people happy with not winning a medal in hockey, happy our team was just even there at all, well, I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to see them among the "we shouldn't keep score and we should give them all participation ribbons so we don't hurt their self-esteem" sheltering their kids crowd. Then their kid gets into the real world and life fucks them up at the ass.

You can go ahead and take over CLW. Go ahead and carry it down the home stretch. :D

Hello!?

EVERY event at the Winter Games is bullshit except for hockey. Half of the events (not just the X-Games crap) are "sports" that NO ONE plays.

Want your kid to go to the Olympics? Put them on one of those Luge sleds ONCE and they have more experience than 99.7% of America. And Curling? LMAO! Shuffleboard on ice! It's a bar game for old people!

It doesn't matter if the events are new, medals are medals. Apparently you put WAY too much stock into who the "experts" think will win. Being a favorite in a competition where the times are measured in thousandths of seconds, yeah. If you didn't fart enough that morning, you lose.

Anything with judges is dumb, open to interpretation, potentially flawed, and possibly rigged. Any "favorite" is subject to being screwed by any of those.

How many countries have like 1 medal? Those people will be HEROES in those countries. Here? We have a good showing and our athletes hear "we suck" and "we shouldn't go back".

Nice. :fp:

Looking at the passport and feeling pretty good right now. #3 overall for gold medals was respectable and 4th overall for medals in total felt pretty good. I'm glad Canada won the gold in hockey but I actually didn't watch the game. Had it been US-Can or Can-Russia (or even Rus-USA) it would have been must watch tv. No offense to the Swedes but they don't evoke much of a reaction as there is no real sense of rivalry.

Congrats to all of the athletes who competed and a special nod to the top 5 countries this year.

Gold Count
1. Russia (13)
2. Norway (11)
3. Canada (10)
4. USA (9)
5. Netherlands (8)

**Russia had their most medals ever at 33 while the US had a great performance at 28 followed by Norway at 26, Canada at 25 and the Netherlands at 24.

Overall I enjoyed a lot of the games primarily to CBC's ONLINE viewing availability. Had this not been available I would have seen nothing because of the time difference. As to the Olympics itself I agree that I am not a fan of the move to so many xgames-like sports but I guess the IOC see's this as a way to grow the brand.

Sorry, jaymo.

Canada did not win everything. It was a piss-poor performance. They should NEVER go back to the Olympics especially in the events where they didn't win despite being the favorite.

It's like the Denver Broncos. They were favored in the Super Bowl, failed to perform and lost badly. They should never be sent back to the Super Bowl.

Aren't you paying attention? Come on, Man! :fp:
