By all means, please continue the discussion on Johnny Douchebag, who even Brian Urlacher is coming out and saying he acted like a punk in the Rice game.

But, it's officially Tuesday, and we have the first game of week 2 kicking off in Thursday, so time for the new week's thread. I'll also go and edit in rankings and bold the games with ranked teams once the new rankings are released.

As for games I'm looking forward to this week. Once again I have to miss the Friday night game (this time UCF-FIU) thanks to being stuck at work until 11pm or midnight with HS football, but at least Navy is finally in action this week.

The noon games, I probably won't see them, due to sleeping after I get home from work Saturday morning (always end up pulling all-nighters on Friday nights due to getting off HS football work at 11pm or midnight and then turning around at 2am or 3am and going back in), but if I somehow happen to be awake, I'll check those three out.

The 3:30/4:30 block is gonna be the one that wears out my remote. Toledo-Missouri and Utah State-Air Force are the two biggies for me. In between, I'll be checking in regularly with Delaware State-Delaware and SDSU-Ohio State, and to a lesser frequency checking out South Carolina-Georgia.

The 6-8pm block is gonna be the bread and butter hours, with Navy-Indiana at 6pm and Colorado State-Tulsa at 7pm. Southern Miss-Nebraska I may check in on, though probably infrequently since I'll have to watch it on BTN's two standard def football channels. I may also check in from time to time on ULL-Kansas State, just to see if they can avoid a second upset, on West Virginia-Oklahoma just to see if the Mountaineers can actually play football this year, and on Notre Lame-Michigan just to see if someone invented a way for two teams to lose the same game.

Then in the 10:30pm nightcap, flipping back and forth between Arizona-UNLV and Washington State-USC. Neither team explicitly interests me, but since both games will be just one channel apart on my channel lineup, I'll probably be doing a lot of flipping from one to the other.

We shall see. I think it will be much closer because of the inexperience at QB. I hope I am proven wrong.

This was posted in the local paper for what it's worth....this is on JFF not being named a cpt...

Arkansas State travels to Auburn this week... lots of emotion on our side. I didn't watch any of the WSU/Auburn game but from the sounds of it, they weren't very crisp and their QB only threw for 99 yards. We racked up 500 yards rushing this past weekend against UAPB with 4 players over 100 yards... should be an interesting game.

Spread opened at Aub -6, has ballooned to -13. I think it will be closer if Ark. St has any depth.

FAU vs ECU tonight at 7:30. I'm tempted to check it out if I'm not busy doing other things.

SmoothPancakes

I may check in on it, but it actually has been bumped to the backburner, as I completely forgot that NFL kicks off tonight with Baltimore-Denver.

Right now I'm only guaranteed to see Denver on TV for 5 weeks this season (Thursday night, Sunday night and Monday night games). Other than that, I'll be stuck watching shitty Cleveland and Detroit, and less shitty Cincy and Indy. And of those four teams, Indy is the only one on Denver's schedule, and that's one of the Sunday night games.

So I'll watch the first hour of FAU-ECU and then jump to NFL at 8:30.

Ugh, these Big Ten Network announcers suck. Navy gets the first down after going for it on fourth and two. It's obvious in the real time play and in replay. The announcers are sitting there going on about no, he didn't get it, Indiana will get the ball back, Indiana this, Indiana that. Refs measure it, it's a first down by the entire length of the ball. Yeah, he really didn't get it, pinheads. I understand it's Big Ten Network, and the game is in Indiana, but try to at least have even a slight bit of neutrality morons.

:D Repeat of last week?

End 3rd quarter - Cal 37, Portland State 30

Early 3rd quarter - Akron 14, James Madison 13

Halftime - Richmond 21, NC State 13

Final - Maine 24, Massachusetts 14'

Final - Chattanooga 42, Georgia State 14

Purdue only beats Indiana State 20-14

I think BTN goes with locals to placate each fan base (in non-conference games) since they are likely regular watchers. Last week's NU-WYO game had Kevin Kugler (from NE) with Eric Crouch & Damon Benning (former Huskers). Tonight had a former Iowa QB with Crouch & Benning.

Is this strictly a decision by the refs or does this mean that Auburn (or the NCAA) didn't sign off on the unis?

And I love watching Navy run the triple option. The run just now, on third and 2 against Indiana, was flawless and beautifully run. :)

I'm glad Navy won. In B1G country, there's been talk the last two years about how Indiana is going to be so improved and might make a bowl. I don't know why that hype exists, but it's clear they are a couple years away from that.

BYU beating #15 Texas 10-7, but they just tossed an INT. Early 2nd quarter.

It was tough, but Navy beats Indiana 41-35. Utah State thumps Air Force 52-20. Tulsa has their hands full at the moment, trailing Colorado State 20-17 in the third quarter. And Florida International got bitchslapped by Storm Johnson and UCF last night.

On the FCS side of things.

Chattanooga knocks off Georgia State 42-14.

Maine knocks off Massachusetts 24-14.

Purdue survives Indiana State 20-14.

Cal survives Portland State 37-30.

Central Michigan survives New Hampshire 24-21.

Akron escapes James Madison 35-33.

NC State escapes Richmond 23-21.

Montana State is beating SMU 22-19 in the 2nd quarter.

Colorado and Central Arkansas are tied 14-14 at halftime.

Louisiana Tech only leads Lamar 17-14 in the fourth quarter.

Arkansas only leads Samford 24-21 in the fourth quarter.

Western Michigan leads Nicholls State 23-21 in the fourth quarter.

Alright, that would make sense then. They were definitely pro-Indiana announcers. It was just sort of irritating them pretty much rooting for Indiana on the broadcast. That fourth down play especially sort of rubbed me the wrong way. It was clearly obvious, in the real time play and then again in replay, that the Navy player got a first down, but they're sitting there yelling no, he didn't get it, it's gonna be Indiana's ball, etc. It was like having an Indiana homer sitting there on my couch.

Otherwise, they weren't too bad. They did a pretty good job when not blatantly rooting for Indiana. Just prefer the purely neutral announcers. :D

Yeah, I've been hearing that same talk. Sitting here smack dab in the middle between Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State, there has been loads of talk about Indiana supposedly being an improved team, between being a bowl bound team, and one that supposedly could be challenging for a Big Ten title in the next year or two. Unfortunately, I've seen nothing over the past years to suggest that. Until then, this is Ohio State's, Michigan's, Nebraska's and Wisconsin's league. Everyone else is just playing to avoid last place.

Now Indiana does have an offense. Put up 35 points against Navy, made a strong fourth quarter comeback, and if it hadn't been for Navy converting on fourth and two with 2 minutes and change left, Indiana would have gotten the ball back with a chance to win. So they are improved in areas. But overall, I don't see them doing all that much.

I honestly don't know how they'll fare against Bowling Green next week. The Falcons are a much improved team this year, based on their manhandling on Tulsa last week and Kent State today. I would not be surprised to see Bowling Green win next week. I'd give the edge to Missouri, and even Penn State. Michigan's a loss, Michigan State also. Minnesota and Illinois could be wins. Wisconsin and Ohio State both losses. Purdue could be a win.

So at best, I could see them maybe winning 5 games this year. They would have to beat all of Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue, and then beat one of either Bowling Green or Missouri just to realistically reach 6 wins.

Damn. With 45 seconds left in the game, A Tulsa player went down on a play. The replay they should, it's definitely a broken leg, the way his leg twisted and almost bent. Two medical carts and paramedics came out, have his left leg wrapped up, and ultimately had to bring out the entire ambulance onto the field as opposed to taking him off the field on their medical cart. 45 seconds left in the damn game, you never want to see that. You never want to see an injury altogether, but one with 45 seconds left in the game, that's rough.

Ok, the NCAA needs to change the rules regarding timeouts. Colorado State is trying to freeze the kicker as Tulsa tries a game winning field goal attempt. That's fine, the three straight fucking timeouts trying to freeze the kicker? JUST GET ON THE WITH FUCKING GAME! They should make it illegal to call more than one timeout at a time. This is just fucking stupid. It's been over three minutes now waiting for a goddamn kick with three seconds left on the clock.

I thought it was against the rules for a team to call consecutive timeouts unless the other team calls one? I could be wrong or maybe the refs do not know the rules.

If it is, the refs didn't know it. Tulsa called their last timeout with three seconds left to set up for the field goal. Colorado State proceeded to call three straight timeouts trying to freeze Tulsa's kicker. Tulsa ultimately got the last laugh, as Colorado State jumped offsides on the first actual kick attempt, and the Tulsa kicked the field goal for 30-27 win. But either the NCAA needs to make that a rule, or if it is a rule, the refs need to learn the rule book better, because that was getting ridiculous there.

Upsets and close calls of the day.

Chattanooga knocks off Georgia State 42-14.

Maine knocks off Massachusetts 24-14.

Nicholls State upsets Western Michigan 27-23.

Purdue survives Indiana State 20-14.

Cal survives Portland State 37-30.

Central Michigan survives New Hampshire 24-21.

Akron escapes James Madison 35-33.

NC State escapes Richmond 23-21.

Arkansas holds on against Samford 32-21.

SMU barely gets past Montana State 31-30.

Colorado has to score 21 points in the fourth quarter to beat Central Arkansas 38-24.

So only three upsets by FCS teams this week, but still a lot of close games by FCS teams.

I have to stick with the Service Academies passing for ore than USC. USC passed the ball for less yards than ARMY, whose quarterback only had 3 completions. Clowney is a great athlete but he has almost become more of a hindrance to the defense than anything. You can successfully run at him since he has already bull rushed past the ball carrier before they can get to the line of scrimmage. Based on the points they put on the board I am pretty sure Aaron Murray can be removed from his list of QB's that are afraid of him.

everyone on the USC boards that i visit is even more fed up than i am.

but a decision is coming. there was a player's only meeting today, captains and key players are meeting with several coaches tomorrow. i'm thinking kiff is on his last life. he'll be given one chance to last the rest of the season. any more fuckups like WSU, and he's fired after the game. most people on the boards think he'll be fired this week, but i think he'll be given one last chance.

several big time recruits have already told players that they will not play for kiffin. some will be trojans nonetheless, but after the shit storm last night, there are some, who want to play offense, that will not be a part of a poor offensive showing like last night.

Also, more of that was Ed Orgeron that did some of the violations at USC and at Tennessee. I can stay that I was never happy to have Kiffin at Tennessee from the start. I was glad that he left for USC, when he did.

no. Coach O wasnt involved in any of the shenanigans. It was mostly monte, willie mack garza, and a few other assistants. monte just didnt know all of the recruiting rules...garza and the assistants were the shady ones. lane mostly brought the wrong kind of attention to tennessee.

you may have been one of the few who wasnt happy to have kiffin, but all of knoxville loved him...hence the mattress burnings and riots when he left town in the middle of the night. most tennessee fans are still bitter that lane left.

Yes and no as to all of Knoxville love him, where was many that I know that didn't care for him from the start and it was more the younger fans that love him. What hasn't help is Knoxville news still loves to write stories about Kiffin after the fact that a good number of the fans now have got over the bitter of him leaving. It's still the younger fans that still have the bitter views to Kiffin. Most older fans have forgot about it and moved on. The only thing that hasn't help is some USC fans (more like non true USC fans) have posted on the Knoxville News site since Kiffin left and bad mouth Tennessee and kept trying to rub it in that Kiffin left.

I can say one thing, He is a good recruiter, but not a very good at coaching. A school needs to see that about him, but I have a feeling that he will be a head coach again, when he gets fired.

Agreed. One problem that he had at Tennessee was running his mouth a little too much and cause a lot of wrong kind of attention. Which he said after leaving for USC that he learn not to do and said to have grown up. I give him one on that as he hasn't really bought any wrong kind of attention. The other wrong kind of attention that was brought players that came to Tennessee that year as of now there is only one player that Kiffin recruited that is still there and that's the kicker Michael Palardy. I don't blame Kiffin for that as recruiting those players as they screw their self up, but it's sad that kind of attention came to Tennessee in the first. I'm just glad that nightmare is over and the AD Mike Hamilton left Tennessee. He was the one to cause all the money problems with sports at Tennessee, which we just broke even this year.

Yeah, I forgot that Willie Mack Garza was the problem and not O.

I don't understand how they can't be listening. I'm no USC fan, but I hate to see proud historical program get screwed up by all this. The AD, boosters and alumni need to awake up and put end to it, before it gets really ugly.

the AD doesnt have much say in this matter, so i've heard. the boosters and alumni are the ones who still like kiffin. but another loss in the same fashion as WSU to any other school on our schedule, results in the immediate termination of kiffin's contract. kiffin has recruited remarkably well given the hand he was dealt with the sanctions, but i'm thinking he wasnt the permanent solution or ever going to get a lifetime contract that PC was offered.

conflicting reports right now. some captains are saying yes, some are saying no. i'm gonna believe that it did happen.
